Giants Notes: Ahmed, Schmitt, Luciano, Bailey, Slater

By Mark Polishuk | May 11, 2024 at 1:54pm CDT

1:54PM: The Giants officially activated Bailey and placed Slater on the concussion-related IL.  In other moves, San Francisco called up second baseman/outfielder Brett Wisely, and optioned catcher Jakson Reetz to Triple-A.

8:29AM: The Giants placed shortstop Nick Ahmed on the 10-day injured list yesterday, as Ahmed is dealing with a sprain in his left wrist.  The injury has been bothering the infielder “for a while now,” as Ahmed told MLB.com and other media on Thursday, when he had to make an early exit from San Francisco’s game with Colorado.

“I got a bunch of treatment and stuff before the game and it was OK going into the game,” Ahmed said.  “And then on the first swing of the game, I just kind of aggravated it. It was hampering my ability to play defense, too. It was probably going to do our team more harm than good if I stayed out there.”

The issue seems relatively minor enough that Ahmed isn’t expected to miss too much time beyond the 10-day minimum, with the caveat that wrist-related injuries can sometimes linger (as was the case for Ahmed even prior to Thursday’s game).  Of course, even 10 days is a significant amount of time for a club to be without its starting shortstop.  After signing a minor league contract with San Francisco during the offseason, Ahmed has started 35 of the Giants’ 40 games, delivering his usual combination of strong defense and uninspiring offense.  Ahmed has hit only .236/.274/.291 over his first 119 plate appearances, translating to a 66 wRC+.

This lack of pop has led some Giants fans to wonder why top prospect Marco Luciano hasn’t yet been given a longer look at the MLB level, though Luciano didn’t help his case with a lackluster Spring Training.  Luciano made his big league debut with 14 games and 45 PA last season, and thus far has hit .273/.403/.355 over 149 Triple-A plate appearances in 2024.  The OBP and a big increase his Luciano’s walk rate are nice signs of progress, though he has only slightly reduced his high strikeout rate, and has shown very little power even in the hitter-friendly environment of the Pacific Coast League.

Luciano might not be too far away from another call-up, however, even though fellow infielder Casey Schmitt got the call Friday to replace Ahmed on the active roster.  Manager Bob Melvin implied to reporters (including the San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser) that Schmitt may have gotten the nod because the Giants were facing left-handed starters on Friday and Saturday.  Though Luciano and Schmitt are both right-handed batters, Schmitt has better numbers against lefties at Triple-A this season.

In general, the team is open to all options with Ahmed out, as Melvin admitted “I’m not sure what [the shortstop position is] going to look like here every day.”  Utilityman Tyler Fitzgerald is the only other player besides Ahmed and Schmitt to see any time at shortstop this season, and Fitzgerald has hit a solid .273/.319/.455 in 47 PA while bouncing all over the diamond.  The Giants may prefer to to keep Fitzgerald available to chip in at multiple positions rather than make him a regular shortstop with Ahmed out, which could open the door for Schmitt to get more work, or for Luciano to perhaps enter the picture.

Elsewhere on the injury front, today marks Patrick Bailey’s seventh day on the seven-day concussion-related IL, and the Giants are hoping he can be cleared prior to today’s game with the Reds.  Bailey took a foul ball off the mask on May 3, but has resumed baseball activities, including catching Blake Snell’s bullpen session on Friday.  Slusser writes that Bailey will be taking the precaution of wearing a new style of mask, with some extra padding involved and a design similar to a hockey goalie’s mask.

Getting their regular catcher back is a nice win for the Giants, yet another position player might be taking Bailey’s spot on the concussion IL.  Austin Slater collided with the wall while trying to make a catch in the first inning of yesterday’s game, and was replaced by a pinch-hitter before his first at-bat.

Melvin told reporters postgame that Slater was quite possibly headed to the IL, which is the latest setback in what has been a rough start to the season for the outfielder.  Slater has hit only .128/.306/.128 in 49 PA while serving in his usual capacity as a platooner against left-handed pitching, a far cry from his career .278/.370/.447 slash line against southpaws.  It could be just a small sample size issue to date, though Slater’s primary concern now is just getting healthy.

Just sad as a Giants fan on current state of these players. Let’s hope they can turn it around or these youngsters can get a spark in that clubhouse

Ya the two words that hit me hard were “uninspiring offense”.
Kinda sums it up. Really don’t understand how they can’t score more than a couple runs a game. They need to clone Lamont & Thairo and play in Colorado every day. Sabol looks better than Murphy this far.

Zaidi committed 400 Million this past offseason….I’ve never seen a Baseball Executive spend money more foolishly.
The team is currently sporting a -42 DIFF
They’ll have a hard time finishing over .500
      The team is just terrible

Is there paperwork that has to be submitted to verify you’re “officially” done with a team? Sort of like when a player officially retires vs. waiting a couple of years hoping to sign with a club before eventually deciding to hang up their cleats.

Giants are looking bad right now, and their farm system is no where near a system that can bail them out this season and looks too need a drastic improvement.

Farhan system does not look like it will produce anything right now than a below .500 team.

Giants are missing a superstar like Posey who was a difference maker in the lineup and clubhouse. Fans loved watching him. I’d say that is the opposite of boring. BTW, I’m a Dodger fan.

Matt Chapman has completely fallen on his face in San Francisco. Maybe he fell too much in love with the city and lost himself in the Castro District.

It’s almost as if the FO chose to ignore his downward spiral that began in 2022. Not only have his hitting skills abandoned him, now fielding seems to be a mystery to him. The silver lining is he is not on a long term contract, but his current level of play will make it seem endless to SF fans.

And they also chose to ignore (or were too stupid) about the fact that Snell only has had 2 notable seasons in his entire career and other than that has never been anything better than mediocre and is past 30. Also possible that Snell fell ‘a little bit too much in love with San Francisco’ and ‘lost himself’ in the Castro District as well.

Brandon obviously did not know to listen to Kenny Rogers and know when to fold ’em. So he is hitting 087 with no power and swinging at air. His hits were on March 30. and April 26 one hit per those days…..that is cut list material

If STL was in the thick of it, he would already be released but for now am sure they are searching for his replacement right now.

The only reason they may be holding up is that he is teaching Winn how to play SS the crawford way

Farhan’s claim to fame was the minor league system overhaul. Early on the ranks had us pretty high. But nothing has come of it except Bailey. A few pitchers we keep hearing about also, Harrison, Black. I’d think they just have to continue being patient with that. There’s really no other solution. They went out and spent, which I love. Chapman hasn’t had good offensive numbers for years. And the price seems ok, so not mad for trying that. Snell I was really excited but he hasn’t even pitched well yet. And injured. Same with Soler. Maybe change of environment and lack of productivity around him has effected him. Plus the ballpark isn’t live at all unless it’s hot out. And the Korean player has looked outmatched at times. Which happens in the early going coming over. Melvin trying to hold it together. This is a total rebuild part two. They rebuilt with Kapler, exploded as a great team and a bad playoff performance and then regressed so terribly to become unwatchable. Zero appeal to the fan base. Now they are stuck in that again, zero appeal to the fan base. And Star Wars day does nothing either.

It’s still early enough for them to turn things around. But a six seed, so to speak, seems a little too far out of their reach for this season. I thought 90-95 wins for sure. 80 will be a stretch. And trades will be coming definitely. Which could be good for the minors as well. This will take a few years with this squad. At least two to have some sense of identity.

I agree. But I think they should’ve started to rebuild sooner, after 2016. But the FO made a lot of mistakes; after 2014, they traded a prospect named LUIS CASTILLO for Casey McGee when Panda left. In 2018, Brian Reynolds for Mccutchen, and so on. They were trying to rebuild and win at the same time. 2021 was magical; comebacks from Crawford, Posey and Belt plus good performances from players almost nobody wanted. But it wasn’t really a team for the future. And Zaidi, well… remember Scott Harris? He worked with Zaidi in SF for 3 years, left for Detroit in 2022 and now the Tigers are contenders while the giants were too busy burning players in their farm system. But yes, I agree
with you. It will take a long time because they wasted a lot of years and money.

Giants need new scouts. Almost guaranteed to draft bums and the good ones will get traded for a rental player. Giants like to sign/draft players who can hit bombs during BP. Lol they signed Crawford because he was supposedly a 2way player yet he’s pitching out of relief. Yea let’s waist a 1st round pick on a reliever. The Eldridge was supposed to be the next Ohtani lol. Hasn’t pitched a single inn and hasn’t hit well against better talent. But he’s 6’7 so you already know he’s got potential lol. Giants management will definitely make you chuckle on how they operate if nothing else.

Eldridge won’t pitch. The team announced at some point, either last offseason or during spring training, that he would be exclusively a 1st baseman (after playing right field last year). They also announced Crawford will be exclusively a pitcher after letting him be exclusively a hitter during the last Arizona Fall League season and looked really bad.
Yeah, both are looking like busts early on, and Hunter Bishop, another recent first round pick, is finally healthy but hitting poorly in AA (but is probably the best hitter on that team, which makes the Richmond hitters really depressing when considering the future).
As a Giants’ fan, I am really hoping a lot of the guys in the farm get on the right track but with so many prospects losing their shine, it is concerning how the team will be the next few years. And with so many vets on the big club struggling, the trading deadline really doesn’t bode well for restocking the farm.

AA lineup is embarrassing. Only players for them doing solid is Cox and Quinn. But they’re in A ball. I don’t get excited unless I see consistency in AA. Vaun Brown I remember so many people were excited about him lol. 23-24 tearing it up in A ball but he can’t hit in AA. They are struggling to produce premium talent

I’m sure he’d have more than 6 extra base hits at this point and would of saved the Giants 18 million dollars. But is he really worth that much more than what Matos would have made? No power, no speed, avg at best in CF, low OBP, weak contact but he don’t K much though I forgot that makes up for it.

What has happened to my beloved Giants?? Multiple injuries? Yes. But even without those the team continues to be slow, uninspiring, and seemingly unable to swing at first pitch strikes. Blame must at least partially be shouldered by the coaching staff, including Melvin. I’ll admit, after the signing of Jung Hoo I was gung ho on this team, (see what I did there?), but after 1/4 of the season it’s most definitely time to panic, and the real blame must go to Zaidi. Padres got Cease and Araez, while we were waiting for Yaz, Slater, Flores, Chapman, and Soler to magically light up the offense. They’re old and slow and need to go. As does FZ. And maybe even Melvin. At least Gabe had swagger. Melvin looks like he’s asleep, just like the rest of the team. Yet there is good news. With the old boring guys stinking or injured, the youngin’s may finally push them out the door. Couldn’t happen soon enough.

Youngins? What youngins? They have the top 5 worst farm system. I would bet that they may only have 1 player in the top 100 by end of the season. They gave up draft picks by signing the wrong FAs gave up international money and are never in on the top talents. Nothing young about the Giants farm lol they have 28 year olds in AZL, 25 year olds in A ball. Actually it’s embarrassing to even look at a Giants farm box score lol. No top prospects of theirs is doing good. Hurting their teams value more by the game. Pencil in the worst farm in all of baseball this year.

Luciano was supposed to have such power potential. Because he was hitting bombs in BP so they assumed yea he’s a 30-35hr type. But you need to learn how to hit in order to actually tap into the power. Luciano and Schmidt can’t hit off speed pitches. I see a couple career minor leaguers at best. Luciano will fall off the top 100 this year you can bet on it. They should of traded him while they had the chance. Lol

That is a sad example of the state in Giants player development.
The cannot seem to consistently grab talent that can turn into stars they have lost whatever they had before “cough Tidrow” and now seem to be a missing on how to scope talent – they get journeymen players though. Pitching is slimming down to where there once was a system of quality prospect line.

Oh Jackie, oh Jackie, the giants will miss having you as a fan. Maybe they’ll turn it all around this season in honor of you.

Why would I give the giants my money to watch them play when my user name clearly shows me as a braves fan? I’ll give the braves my money but not the giants.
