Jung Hoo Lee Leaves Game Due To Dislocated Shoulder

By Mark Polishuk | May 12, 2024 at 11:14pm CDT

6:51PM: Lee suffered a dislocated shoulder, as per a team announcement (correcting an earlier statement from manager Bob Melvin).  Lee will undergo an MRI to determine the extent of the damage, and a more severe dislocation could possibly put his season in jeopardy.

4:38PM: Giants center fielder Jung Hoo Lee left today’s game with the Reds after suffering what the Giants later announced was a left shoulder strain.  Lee made a leaping attempt to catch a Jeimer Candelario fly ball in the first inning, but the ball hit the top of the wall for a three-run double, while Lee’s arm made hard contact with the padding atop the fence.  The awkward collision left Lee in obvious pain, and he was favoring his left arm as he left the field with the team trainer.

Manager Bob Melvin will surely provide media with an update on Lee following the game, but it certainly looks like a trip to the 10-day injured list is in order.  Lee was just making his return to the lineup today after missing San Francisco’s previous three games with a minor foot injury, after he fouled a pitch off himself in Wednesday’s 8-6 win over the Rockies.

Lee’s situation adds to the Giants’ recent injury woes, as the team has lost five position players to the IL in a little over a week’s time.  Michael Conforto was just placed on the 10-day IL earlier today due to a hamstring strain, with Conforto joining Austin Slater (concussion symptoms), Nick Ahmed (wrist sprain), Jorge Soler (shoulder strain), and backup catcher Tom Murphy (knee sprain) on the sidelines.  Patrick Bailey was activated from the seven-day concussion-related IL yesterday, but was a late scratch from today’s lineup, as the catcher is dealing with a viral illness and could possibly miss a few more days.

Losing all of these regulars isn’t good news for a team that was already having trouble generating offense, and the Giants will have a particular issue in the outfield with Lee, Conforto, and Slater all out.  Luis Matos was called up to take Conforto’s roster spot today, so he’ll join Mike Yastrzemski, Heliot Ramos, and utilityman Tyler Fitzgerald in trying to fill in all the gaps in the outfield depth chart.  LaMonte Wade Jr. and Brett Wisely could also chip in for corner outfield duty, and Wade Meckler might be the next call-up from Triple-A since Meckler is already on the 40-man roster.

For Lee himself, a significant injury would be a very unfortunate way to begin his first season in Major League Baseball.  The outfielder signed a six-year, $113MM deal (the fourth-largest contract for any free agent last winter) with the Giants back in December, with the team also adding a $18.825MM posting fee to the Kiwoom Heroes, Lee’s old Korea Baseball Organization club.  Lee doesn’t turn 26 until August, so the combination of his youth and his big numbers in the KBO League made him an attractive commodity in free agency, and the priciest acquisition of a very busy San Francisco offseason.

The results have been mixed over Lee’s first first 37 games, which isn’t surprising for a player getting his first taste of North American baseball whatsoever, let alone the majors.  Lee entered today’s action hitting .262/.310/.331 over 158 plate appearances, translating to an 89 wRC+.  The pluses include some solid center field defense and a lot of contact, as Lee has been one of the hardest hitter in the league to strike out this season.  However, Lee hasn’t done much with all his contact, as his hard-hit ball rate is only slightly above average, and he isn’t generating much power.

That sucks! Conforto, Soler and Lee on IL at same time. Great opportunity for Yaz and Heliot.

Yeah, it’s a lot of guys on the IL, but the silver lining is that we get to see what some of the AAA graduates can do. Probably not much.

Yaz is a platoon guy this year. They have an outfield of Lee, Conforto and Soler. Yaz gets plenty of at-bats but he is not an everyday guy.

Yes, I am completely incorrect about Soler playing some OF this year. Yaz has started 26 out of 42 games for the Giants this season which arguably does mean he has an opportunity to play “more”.

“How is Yaz not everyday”…Yaz is another of the league-average players the Giants trot out there most days. Every year the Giants try to combine a couple expensive free agents to their league average core and then wonder why .500 ball has been their ceiling. The Giants have(likely)not drafted an above average regular since Buster Posey.

Are you implying that Posey is only above average, or that posey was the last giants draft pick that worked out? Either way, not true. Couple more guys made it through after Posey, who is one of the greatest catchers of all time.

“Posey is only above average”…Not at all. When I talk about Hall of Fame level players(Michael Jordan, Mike Trout, Buster Posey, Johnny Bench, Muhammad Ali etc…)I assume the people reading are already aware these players are among the best ever to play and I prefer not to write manuscript length posts. What I’m suggesting is the S.F Giants haven’t drafted or developed players well since they ran Bruce Bochy and Brian Sabean out of town(of course it was portrayed in S.F as “mutual” but it really wasn’t). Farhan Zaidi hasn’t really done much to break this insidious trend in his several years in San Fran.

Giants have not shown any relevance towards playoffs – its a shame because the pitchers coming off injury on paper look like a very strong lineup of starters. It looks more like they are SELLERS coming in July

Depends. Could sell really high on a guy like Kyle Harrison, Mason Black and Keaton Winn are also young guys with tons of control that the Giants might not need to keep if Cobb and Ray return. If either of the latter return and pitch well before the deadline, they, too, will have trade value. Tyler Rogers has a 2.55 ERA and has pitched in keeping with his solid track record. Conforto is an obvious candidate to move, since he’d be purely a rental. WadeJr. could also be enticing to a team that needs a spark plug.

You’re suggesting they sell Harrison, who’s actually delivering. Mason who’s had 2 starts, and Keaton Winn who’s looked like a good rotation piece. The giants have serious depth in the rotation, but trading this year from youth would be awful. 2025 should be the plan

Nah, I’m not suggesting they trade those controllable pitchers so much as I am responding to the OP and everyone who thumbed him up.

If the Giants have to sell at the deadline, they have pieces that could be attractive both for the short and long term. FWIW, I don’t have a lot of faith that 2025 is going to be better than this year. This team is objectively worse than last year’s, but now with what, 300 million committed and a farm that continues to trend down.

Almost every team has pieces who could be interesting, the Giants just as many as the Padres or whatever team. However, if someone mentions a team is going to be a seller, I interpret that as they are going to move pieces who won’t help the club this year. With the Giants you are only looking at Alex Cobb and Michael Conforto in that regard or maybe guys that’ll be UFA in 2026, like Yaz, Wade…. When healthy, those players could be fine, but are not going to move the needle for a contender. Sure, theoretically, Kyle Harrison, Patrick Bailey, etc. could be moved too, but imo that really doesn’t make any sense for the Giants.

“Way early to give up on him”…That’s the problem with offering $100M+ to a somewhat unknown player. You literally cannot give up on him for at least 3 years, because you invested so much on him. The Giants real problem is poor drafting and development; every year they try to add a couple expensive free agents to a league average(being generous)core and wonder why they miss the playoffs.

Straw can help now and fill in just fine. Great fielder. Can’t hit worth a damn – .209 BA and a .576 OPS in AAA so far. He makes just under $5M this year, $6.4M in ‘25, and $7.4M in ‘26. So the problem once Lee returns is how do you get rid of Straw?

The same trolls who say the Dodgers’ championship in the 2020 short season does not count then wave Bauer’s 2020 Cy Young award from the short season as if it carries no asterisk. Either position is defensible, but be consistent. If Bauer is a 2020 Cy Young winner, then Dodgers won the 2020 world championship.

Mlbtr literally has a series on guys performing in foreign leagues. Last year they did a report of NPB players to watch who could make the jump to MLB and posted an article in April May June July August and September. And they’ll probably do something similar this year.

Youd think they’d have an ounce of decency to post a recanting statement at some point regarding the false accusations made by Lindsey Hill and the girl in ARZ. They helped spread the flames so they have an obligation to at least update the viewers regarding what’s transpired since then. Considering how uninformed people are on the Trevor Bauer saga you’d think they’d be able to post an unbiased timeline of facts to date regarding the situations.

But they won’t sadly. They’ll willingly post accusations but won’t update their audience. Shotty journalism at its finest.

They’ll post about Ohtanis legal situation but won’t touch Bauers. Bad journalism is bad.

Sure. MLB has stuff on Bauer but district attorneys don’t who are actually in charge of prosecuting him. Right.

All the arbiter decided was based on the cba the mlb had authority to issue a suspension. That was it. MLB doesn’t need to meet the legal requirement the justice system does. Nor does the nfl or nba.

To date we know 4 women accused Trevor Bauer. 2 we have names of 2 we don’t even know who they are.

1 was named Lindsey Hill. She received 0 dollars after her texts and video messages became public knowledge. She dropped her lawsuit shortly after. She was #1

1 was named Darcy Adanna Esemonu and she was charged with trying to defraud Bauer with fake accusations. She was # 4

“ According to the Washington Post, the second accuser withdrew her request for a restraining order after Bauer’s lawyer threatened her with legal action, but has cooperated with MLB.”
I can’t find her name anywhere

          The 3rd accuser
This accuser, who lives in Columbus, claims to have met Bauer on a dating app while he was still a minor leaguer in the Cleveland Guardians’ organization
The woman said she consented to being choked, but only up to the point where she looked like she was about to lose consciousness

So yeah. I’d say the MLBTR should really do right by Trevor Bauer and update the community about his legal situation. Cause it’s been 3 years and to not have names of 2 accusers still. Just beyond stupid.

The evidence for Bauer is easy to find if you are interested in his legal situation. If there is zero interest in his services, there is zero interest in his services. I’m sure if that changes, there will be a corresponding update on the personal side of things included in the report.

I can see that point. I can also understand avoiding the soap opera of his personal life is there is nothing new baseball wise to report. Seems like that’s the standard MO of this place. Something MLB baseball happens, the subject gets a full bio update in the report.

@foppert2 They might not have directly accused him of anything but they did bring more eyeballs to someone else’s accusation so it is equally their responsibility to bring more eyeballs to the exoneration.

And Adanna’s accusation was not related to MLB baseball. He had already been released by the Dodgers before that happened.

“It’s just that there is nothing MLB to report.”

Was also true when the allegation first was made public and they still reported it.

The one girl who made accusations is now being charged with fraud. That’s worth reporting.

Bauer is going to sue if he’s not given an opportunity in the next couple years. And he’s going to win. Perhaps MLB is completely fine with that. Personally I would rather he was given an opportunity and actually earned his money instead of being Kaepernick 2.0.

I think you know I support and feel for him from the sexual misconduct aspect of things. But the total apathy being shown to him by MLB, and the resulting apathy being shown in media reporting of his situation, is on Trevor. He made himself the guy that no one in MLB wants to think or read about.

It’s pretty easy to glean what the site mods’ opinion is on Bauer even if they won’t just come out and say it.

And yes. I do think Colin Kaepernick should at least be invited to camp by *some* team and allowed to at least *try* to win the starting quarterback job. Although obviously he still has to outperform his competition. Makes no sense to keep punishing him for something that is pretty commonplace in 2024.

For the record, I think he has gone about it the wrong way. I suspect if he had gone totally social media dark prior to Japan, and just let a manager address the legal things that happened in a matter of fact way, he would be very close to having an MLB job today. An owner would have caved and given him a shot. Staying front and centre wasn’t smart imo.

It’s a matter of justice, imo. If Bauer was guilty (even if not convicted), I’d have no problem with Manfred hiring someone to beat him into a coma.

But no reasonable person can look at the evidence and think he is guilty. He should have his name cleared, unless they find at least somewhat compelling.

And I would defend you the same way.

Well he very obviously violated MLB’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Policy. His lawyers acknowledged that he sodomized and punched an unconscious woman. This is indisputable. And below I have copied the relevant text from MLB.

“Sexual assault refers to a range of behaviors, including a completed nonconsensual
sex act, an attempted nonconsensual sex act, and/or nonconsensual sexual contact.
Lack of consent is inferred when a person uses force, harassment, threat of force,
threat of adverse personnel or disciplinary action, or other coercion, or when the
victim is asleep, incapacitated, unconscious or legally incapable of consent.”

Where did they do that exactly. You keep saying it but haven’t actually provided when they admitted such. Probably because they didn’t. Cause doing such is a crime and he’s faced 0 charges. The whole unconscious part means they can’t consent. So he’d be looking at rape charges which is far worse than sexual assault least in a legal sense.

          Huh

          FYI
          1. The following contentions are taken from Hill’s Counterclaim and the parties’ briefings on this motion.

          2. The police had Hill call Bauer to discuss the May 16 incident,
told her what to say, and recorded the call. (Id.) During the call,……….Bauer did not dispute engaging in these activities, but said that he should have
gotten clarification from Hill and been on the same page with her about what she was
          comfortable with
          A. did not dispute =/= admitting engaging in the activities. Especially on a phone call being recorded by the police instructing hill on what to say.
          B. How would he get clarification if shes passed out unconscious.
          C. Where did his legal team admit such? Your own “proof” is Bauer not talking about it on a phone call between him and Lindsey Hill + Police

          3. Bauer argues that the state court’s “decision made clear” that Judge Gould-Saltman
determined Bauer did not commit an act of abuse, which definitionally includes battery
          and sexual assault

So your own links provide us evidence proving you dont know what youre talking about. Got it. My best advice dude is read things thoroughly and make sure you read all parts. Not just the cliff notes version.

determined Bauer did not commit an act of abuse, which definitionally includes battery
          and sexual assault”

The majority of the ruling is about how Bauer is so very wrong about this. Come on now.

“Notwithstanding Hill’s consent to some form of rough sex, Bauer
engaged in acts while Hill was unconscious, when she was physically and legally unable
          to give consent.”

Bauer deserves to have the truth printed. But Bauer has had the benefit of spending millions on attorneys and/or investigators. The posters here would be better off focusing their efforts on getting justice for accused perpetrators with lesser financial resources.

Baseball team owners should be able to make hiring decisions based upon their perception of what is good for business and their own reputations.

Bauer has completed his suspension. Now each owner should independently decide if Bauer is good for their business and fan base or not.

As to why charges werent brought, I would imagine it is because 1. The woman asked for pain 2. Gave consent to be choked out 3. Bauer immediately stopped when she, after regaining consciousness, asked him to 4. Went back 5. Wouldnt seem sympathetic to a jury

I’m sure you can find the DA’s statement.

Absolutely none of this changes the fact that Bauer’s team, before a judge, did not push back on the woman’s account of the encounter. They allowed that account to be considered factual. He violated an unconscious woman. This is not up for debate. It is not in dispute. This is why he was handed the longest suspension for Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse in MLB history

Bauer argues that the state court’s “decision made clear” that Judge Gould-Saltman determined Bauer did not commit an act of abuse, which definitionally includes battery and sexual assault

Bauer argues that Hill is precluded from bringing her claims of battery and sexual assault due to collateral estoppel based on the state court findings in the DVRO
i.e. Collateral estoppel precludes relitigation of issues argued and decided in prior proceedings
(prior ruling that the jude ruled Bauer did not committ an act of abuse)

In her opposition, Hill does not contest that the first, second, fourth, and fifth elements of collateral estoppel are met, and the Court agrees.
Hill even admitted she had no legal reason to bring up stuff already decided, Bauer did not committ assault based on previous rulings.

Straight from your own link dude. Proof read your own stuff next time.

“His legal team did not dispute that he did those things. They could’ve. But they didn’t. Therefore it is considered to have occurred.”

Not true no matter how many times you say it.

Call the guardians they have outfielders available. Myles straw and Ramon lauerano could had for a bucket of baseballs.

They’re healthy bodies, and that’s about it. Add one or both and your offense will go from bad to much worse. Straw is great defensively and is not injury prone. The pluses end there unfortunately.

Thoughts and prayers for his recovery. With that said, he is playing at 10% below league average so not a significant loss to the team.

Someone should look to the A’s as Estuary Ruiz is being wasted on the bench . A Reds uniform would suit him well .

He is being platooned. He has always been bad at hitting right handers, but is especially bad this year at 136 average while not walking. He doesn’t get on base against righties to use his best asset. Why wouldn’t they platoon him with Lawrence Butler who hits righties better (not by much but still better).

If so he may have gotten the call before Matos.

Very possible, depending on his performance. I don’t think he’s played yet this season.
The Giants are down to Marco Luciano, Jackson Reetz and David Villar on their 40 man roster to call up. I would guess it will be either Luciano or Villar. Reetz has the best offensive numbers in AAA of the three but I doubt he gets the call since that would put the Giants at three catchers. However, the Giants did play him some in the outfield last year at AAA.
I would guess it will be Luciano He is an on base machine with the RiverCats and is the most exciting name of the 3. His lack of power in AAA is concerning but he is still young.

Watched a River cats game and Luciano wasn’t at short, so even a tighter list based off that and villar inability to contribute anything meaningful.

It’s f***ing May. Yes, it sucks that it seems everybody’s injured, but a) all teams have injured players, and b) all teams have players that suck early. Stop judging Snell and Chapman this early because they signed so late and wait until late June to see where the Giants are. Everybody wants to make snap judgments on players over individual game performances and baseball is not like that. It’s a long season with many ups and downs. If you want instant gratification, replay NFL games or go play the lotto. Otherwise, wait til July to b**ch about Farhan or Melvin or whoever. Or quit the Giants. I’m sure the Sacra-Vegas A’s need fans.

It should not be a surprise. You get players made of porcelain, this is what you get. Farhan gets fleeced with every signing he makes. There is a reason why Farhan can sign these players – no one else will.

Why do the Giants not have a shortstop? Seems like they could use one. As a Cardinal fan I can assure you Crawford is washed up but is Nick Ahmed really all that better?

Primarily a failed medical followed by a dearth of FA options the following year.

Ahmed was one of the better performers in the first month so without tracking Craws progress, I’m guessing it’s a yes he is.

Ahmed is playing like a replacement level player. Yes that’s better than Crawford but why not go get a legit shortstop? Spent a pile of money on Soler who they didn’t need. Why not get a shortstop?

They probably would have if there was one that fit the need available in FA. It wasn’t money that was stopping them.
          Soler was a different need.

Other sources are saying structural damage to his shoulder and he is seeing an orthopedic surgeon. If he has to have surgery, his season is over. Sad end to the season for him.
