The Marlins got a surprisingly early jump on the trade market this offseason, hammering out a rare May trade of significance when they shipped infielder Luis Arraez to San Diego last Friday in exchange for a package of four players. It’s not entirely shocking given both the Marlins’ awful start to the season and that their trade partner was the hyper-aggressive Padres, whose president of baseball operations, A.J. Preller, leaves no stone unturned when a big-name player is even remotely available. However, it seems the Padres weren’t the only club sniffing around Arraez despite the early nature of his entry to the trade market; Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports this morning that the Royals also showed interest in Arraez before the Padres pulled off that swap.
Rosenthal emphasizes that talks with the Kansas City were preliminary and did not advance far. Still, the mere interest from Kansas City is telling. The Royals had an aggressive winter that saw them spend $109MM across several free agent signings, and now that they’re out to a 20-15 start to the season, it seems they’re interested in further bolstering the club.
Arraez is a limited defender who’s below-average at second base, solid enough at first base and of course has the bat to handle designated hitter duties. The Royals presumably wouldn’t have used Arraez at first base much, thanks to the presence of Vinnie Pasquantino. In all likelihood, Kansas City would’ve given Arraez the bulk of his playing time at second base and designated hitter.
Instead, the Royals will hope for 26-year-old second baseman Michael Massey to continue his recent hot streak and look to get DH/outfielder Nelson Velazquez back to his 2023 form. Velazquez bashed 14 homers in 147 plate appearances for the Royals last year after being acquired in a deadline swap with the Cubs, but he’s hitting just .215/.284/.344 with a 30.4% strikeout rate this season as the team’s primary designated hitter.
Even looking beyond Arraez specifically, the mere fact that Kansas City was poking around the market for one of the presumably few players genuinely available on the trade market at such an early stage in the season signals that the Royals won’t necessarily be content with their offseason additions and any in-house reinforcements that might surface. It also likely signals a willingness to deal from the top end of their farm system. The Royals’ system isn’t viewed as particularly strong, so they’d have had to expend some of their most notable prospects in order to pique Miami’s interest.
Ultimately, news of interest from a team that didn’t wind up trading for a player only carries so much weight. The Royals’ interest in Arraez will be little more than a footnote that’s perhaps worth keeping in mind when he reaches free agency. But it’s also a portent for how the Royals could operate in the weeks and months ahead, and it gives some credence to the idea that they’ll be in the mix when other high-profile bats become available this summer. Whether it was expressed to the Royals that the Marlins would be willing to pay down the remainder of Arraez’s contract isn’t clear. Kansas City opened the season with a roughly $116MM payroll, per RosterResource, and has previously run its payroll as high as $143MM (under the previous ownership regime).
The Royals’ offseason activity already pointed to a win-now mindset, and so long as they remain in or on the periphery of postseason contention, it seems they’ll continue to keep their foot on the gas.
Now Yu Know
Good to see KC serious about competing.
pohle
they should sign brandon belt if they want to prove that
stymeedone
Let me know when Belt shows he is serious about wanting to play.
pohle
just because votto signed a MiL deal means every veteran not on a roster should too? belt was one of the top hitters on the blue jays last year, and i mean 2nd or 3rd best, and has said he wants a major league opportunity, so what makes you think he doesnt want to play?
stanton100
Pointless article.

but this had a point?

Pointless, yet you still commented on it pinhead

@stanton100, I had the same initial reaction about this topic, but I think the author did a good job of explaining why it was significant:
“Even looking beyond Arraez specifically, the mere fact that Kansas City was poking around the market for one of the presumably few players genuinely available on the trade market at such an early stage in the season signals that the Royals won’t necessarily be content with their offseason additions and any in-house reinforcements that might surface. I wonder if KC would’ve given up a top 100 prospect for him, unlike SD.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Probably not. Padres upping the ante in prospects was the Marlins’ willingness to pay Arraez’ salary to give them some more CBT room to add in the future if needed. Royals don’t have those same payroll limitations.
websoulsurfer
Mostly because the Royals payroll is $80 million below the CBT threshold, while the Padres is $10 million below the threshold.
KCMOWHOA
I don’t think we even have a top 100 prospect unless Blake Mitchell was recently added to the list
Old York
Too bad. I like the 2024 Royals. Should be a decent team this year. It was nice to see one owner actually trying to be competitive.

Royals raising eyebrows right now. Going to be interesting to see how aggressive they are prior to the trade deadline.

Look @the Royals being all relevant. Nice to see small market team really trying.

I agree, but how is “we had interest in the guy before someone else got him” really trying?
stymeedone
It was more, we knew he was available but never really made an offer. Kind of indicates the FO in KC isn’t yet believing what they see and wasn’t ready to move yet.
whyhayzee
Well, they’ve won a championship more recently than the $600 Billion Yankees with their bloated contracts and bloated players and blowhard fans.

In 2021-2023 Arraez was an above average defender at 2B with a 2,3, and 4 DRS during those 3 seasons respectively.
In 2022-2023 he started 71 games at 1B which is not a large enough sample size to make a determination on defensive performance.
People need to keep in mind that OAA measures ONLY the players range and play on balls in play. It doesn’t measure throws or turning DP or anything else that a player does defensively. It is far from a complete measure of defensive performance yet. That is why I still use DRS which uses 24 different data points.
Here is the list defense at 2B from last season
fieldingbible.com/drs-leaders/players?position=4
straightuphonestguy
I don’t see the need for him to ever take the field anywhere besides 1B. Even if he is more average (DRS) than awful (OAA), Cronenworth is right there, y’know? It’s perplexing to me for the Padres to have an embarassment of infield depth and then play Arraez up the middle.
Pads Fans
Arraez is a better 2B than a 1B, that is why the vast majority of his starts are at 2B.
He is above average defensively at 2B. What he lacks in range, he has more than made up for with an accurate arm and soft glove. He makes all the plays on balls he gets to. I think that Web did a pretty good job of explaining OAA;s shortcomings.
Cronenworth is looking like he may be the best defensive 1B in MLB so far this season. Why would you move him just as he is beginning to really get 1B? That makes no sense when you have a guy that is above average and can fill in ably for Bogaerts AND is a LHB.
straightuphonestguy
There’s no need to move Cronenworth long-term, I’m just talking about spot starts where they spell Bogaerts (or Kim) for another lefty. Cronenworth had 260 innings there last year and did just fine.
I’m not putting a lot of stock into pre-2023 defensive stats due to the change in shift rules. Over his last 1400 innings at 2B, Arraez has 0 DRS and -17 OAA; when there’s a big gap between defensive metrics, I tend to rely on the eye test and Arraez’s play on the ball up the middle to score the fifth Dbacks’ run yesterday looked awful.
You might be right that he’s a better 2B than 1B, but I’d prefer to have him full-time DH anyway. An occasional start is fine, but it’s a little auspicious to me that he starts over Bogaerts in the second game of his Padres tenure.
Pads Fans
Arraez had 1124 innings at 2B last year and before this season he has been just as good at 2B in his last 1400 innings or so there as Cronenworth has been in his last 1400 innings or so at the position.
Arraez in 2022-2023 – 1401.2 innings at 2B – 7 DRS
Cronenworth in 2022-2023 – 1501 innings at 2B – 3 DRS
You ALWAYS fail the eye test. Even pros fail it, that is why they don’t rely on it,. They rely on the tech to tell them the truth. Using ONE play to make your judgement is a guarantee to fail the test. Tatis had an error in early May last season where he looked so bad that even the Padres announcers said something about it. He won the Gold and Platinum Glove Awards and had a 29 DRS. Kyle Schwarber had a diving catch in a game in Mid-May last season and he ended up being the singular worst LF in baseball by a huge margin
There is no reason to move Cronenworth back to 2B to spell Bogaerts when you have a guy that is just as good on defense in Arraez.
He didn’t start OVER Bogaerts. He spelled an injured Bogaerts giving him a chance to just DH.
BTW, auspicious is good. Auspicious: 1. promising success; propitious; opportune; favorable. an auspicious occasion. 2. favored by fortune; prosperous; fortunate.
straightuphonestguy
Agree to disagree. Thank you for the correction!

Cronenworth is right there,

He is, but I switch players off of their position unless it was an emergency or a long-term thing.

I *don’t*

I think Brendan Rodgers of the Rockies could be a nice fit in KC. I wouldn’t turn down an offer of Massey + a couple of mid level pitching prospects.
vtadave
Except there’s no evidence that Rodgers > Massey
hiflew
Maybe the Gold Glove and the 4.3 WAR season in 2022?
DarkSide830
He’s an 88 career OPS+ player that has serious injury issues. No way KC, who is big on controllable talent (a la Massey), would make that swap.
Cardsfanatik redux
Yeah, I’m not sure I’d do Massey straight up for Rodgers. let alone add pitching prospects.

Those days never existed. All small market teams go through periods of building and re-building.
CL-40 years of no playoffs
LAA has not won a playoff game in 15 years.
MIL 26 years w/o a playoff
Philly 24 years and one playoff appearance.
Rangers 35 years.
WS 2 appearances in 74 years
Most teams cycle on and off.
holecamels35
I’m sure they could of acquired him if they wanted to, that trade was nothing special from the Padres end. Royals should have just took on the salary and gave them 2 top 30 prospects that are easily replaceable.
stretch123
Blake Mitchell + others for Arraez would have been a nice return for Miami.
Bjoe
Royals wouldn’t give up Mitchell alone for Arraez.
rememberthecoop
Steve, you say “of course” that Areaez has the bat to handle DH, and I agree. But,,only as long as he’s hitting .330 or more. Since he doesn’t have power, he has to hit for a high average to be a DH. Based on the 2nd half of 2023, and the .290 or so hitter he has been up until recently, maybe not the slam dunk your response might indicate.
JoeBrady
I don’t think DH is a slamdunk. He has a career .802 OPS, but his career BABIP is .343. That’s #19 in BB. That could easily revert.
CATS44
At the moment its a four team race in the AL Central. Its significant that the Royals showed any interest in trading for…and paying…Arreaz.
When handicapping the race, a major consideration is each teams willingness to add at the deadline. KC apparently is.
Contrast that to the Guardians. Last year, in spite of being only a game behind on July 31st, they not only refused to do so, they did a sell off.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
And the Tigers?
Not interested? Not even sniffing the air? Content.
Here’s what the Tigers should do:
Hire the Superfife!
Apparently, Tiger fans are more hungry than the front office. At least some are.
stymeedone
Apparently you are ready to give up on Keith quickly. Plus Jung is starting to heat up at AAA. Even if Keith goes back down, the collection of subs at 3B will just move to 2B, where they actually fit better defensively. Tigers need a power hitter. Arraez is fine, just not a fit in Detroit.
Motor City Beach Bum
I agree with your take on what will happen if Keith goes down. Him and Meadows are certainly making a case for a AAA tuneup. A recent article suggested Tork might benefit from a demotion too (I doubt that happens). He was supposed to be their power source and he has no HRs.
Arraez gets on base which they need but his sub-par defense makes him a DH. The Tigers have a cheap young DH getting on base at AAA so why spend 10 mil on another. They should just bring Malloy up.
If Meadows keeps hitting .100 he needs to go down, great defense or not. Perez and Greene can cover CF for now. Hopefully they start bringing up other young guys (Jung, Leonard, Dingler) if the catchers, Baez, Keith and Meadows don’t start hitting. Greene, Canha, Carp, Perez, Vierling, Ibanez and Urshela have been good enough.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
He didn’t need a contract or a place on the 40 yet, if I recall correctly. It was a hype/salespitch move, a distraction.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
I believe in keeping them down, off the 40 and off the 26 until they can’t be kept off, thus stacking the lower levels, making trade possibilities, letting them prove who’s who, letting them fight it out. That’s what the minors are for. Too bad they eliminated the September call ups. That happened.because they didn’t understand the system and that’s because they are business men, not baseball guys. They have degrees from fancy schools that impress the lesser educated owners. They can sell themselves and thus gained the jobs, eliminating the baseball guys.
The Tigers have avoided hiring MLB players.
Ty Cobb never hit many HRs. He could play baseball.
