Yankees Reinstate, Option Jasson Domínguez

By Darragh McDonald | June 12, 2024 at 5:30pm CDT

The Yankees announced that outfielder Jasson Domínguez has been reinstated from the 60-day injured list and optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. To open a 40-man roster spot, infielder Jon Berti was transferred to the 60-day injured list.

Domínguez, now 21, has long been one of the higher-ranked prospects in the Yankee system. He arrived on the major league scene with a splash late last year, hitting four home runs in his first eight contests as a September call-up. Unfortunately, he was then diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing elbow and had to undergo Tommy John surgery.

That procedure generally has a lesser return timetable for position players as opposed to pitchers, with the Yankees providing an estimate of nine to ten months when announcing the surgery. He began this year on the injured list and has began a rehab assignment in the middle of May, eight months after going under the knife.

Domínguez has been hitting well on his rehab, with a line of .368/.415/.658 in his 20 games, but it he’ll have to stay in Triple-A due to a crowded outfield picture in the Bronx. The Yanks have mostly used an alignment of Aaron Judge, Juan Soto and Alex Verdugo on the grass this year, with Giancarlo Stanton the regular in the designated hitter slot and Trent Grisham providing depth from the bench.

All of those players are hitting well this year except for Grisham, but the Yanks don’t want their prized prospect to come up to the big leagues just to sit on the bench in a depth role. He’ll continue getting regular action for the RailRiders after his long layoff but will be a candidate to rejoin the major league club if anyone in that outfield mix needs a stint on the injured list. Soto has been dealing with some elbow inflammation of late but returned after a brief layoff.

From a service time perspective, it’s likely to have an impact on Domínguez’s future. He was able to get 31 days of service time during his call-up last year and would have been able to get to 1.031 this year if he were on the injured list or with the big league club all season long. If he stays an optional assignment for a number of weeks, he will fall short of that one-year mark here in 2024. If that comes to pass, the earliest he could qualify for free agency would be after 2030. If he is called up early enough to get to that one-year line, then free agency after 2029 would still be a possibility.

As for Berti, 34, he was acquired on the cusp of Opening Day as the Yankees were looking for some extra infield help while both DJ LeMahieu and Oswald Peraza were injured. Unfortunately, Berti himself has been injured for much of the year at this point. He missed the latter half of April due to a left groin strain, returning in early May. But a left calf strain sent him back to the IL on May 25.

Berti was told that he could miss six to eight weeks, per Greg Joyce of the New York Post on X, so the Yanks have decided to use his roster spot for this move. He now won’t be eligible for activation until late July.

In 2025. For this year, they eventually can still find regular playing time for Dominguez by having him take the short side of the platoon with Verdugo, who is weaker against lefties, and the longer side of the platoon with Stanton. Everyone still gets ABs and the team gets stronger. Probably won’t see it until post the All-Star break. Good problem to have.

Yankees are already going to have to sign Soto so I don’t see a reality where they can sign both of them

Dog brings left handed, hard contact, without strikeouts, with an edge that’s been missing for quite some time…..find room for the Martian but not by getting rid of Dog…Judge to first, and plenty of room in the outfield for all…

At this point I can’t tell if you’re talking about Soto or dugy

You mean now? I don’t see them taking their most impactful hitter, moving him from the top end of the defensive spectrum to the lowest end, and asking him to learn 1B mid-season. He’s not the apple cart to upset when everything is clicking with him. That feels more like a desperation move, not something teams playing near .700 ball do. The future? Maybe. Dominguez is a nice prospect, but let’s not go crazy messing around the this team to fit him in immediately. These things usually resolve themselves in other ways.

I believe they try to keep Verdugo. He’s been playing outstanding defense in LF, hitting well enough, and brings an edge to the dugout. Yes, Juan Soto is still being Soto, and also brings a different kind of edge. But there’s NO WAY he doesn’t test free agency. And being a Bor-ass client, he’ll no doubt look to get Ohtani level money. (although he doesn’t deserve it since he can’t pitch too!) But that won’t stop Boras from seeking it, even if it means his client misses all of next spring training.

The Yankees simply can’t pay that kind of money for him, AND Judge, Stanton, Cole, Rodon, et al. Verdugo will come at a comparative bargain, though. So, an outfield alignment of Verdugo in LF, Dominguez in CF, and Judge back in RF just makes too much sense.

The Yankees “affording” Soto won’t be as difficult at it sounds. It’s easier for them than any other team since they’re already paying him $31MM this year. He’s on the payroll, so they need to budget for the additional cost. They have over $40MM coming off the books with Verdugo, Gleyber and Rizzo, so they can use part of that to fund an additional $15MM or so a year. That’s why Dominguez is important since he’ll be a league minimum player. You’re right that Boras will take him to free agency to get the highest amount, but the Yankees will have the final bid unless Soto wants to leave the Yankees. Seems to actually be thriving and enjoying the Yankees. He only leaves if the Yankees let him leave.

I bet soto would be willing to take a smaller offer with the Yankees compared to another team because Soto thrives next to judge and Soto can use his name image and likeness better in New York compared to say San Diego

But they can’t afford to lowball him or otherwise Steve cohen will open the floodgates

Stanton also starts to become more affordable next year and especially after next year. He makes 29 million next year and then Miami is on the hook for 10 million in each of the next two after that. Then the albatross can be bought out

Ohtani’s contract is valued at the $46M/year for 10 years. That’s $460M total, adjusted. Soto is probably looking for a 13 year contract. $40M per year over 13 years is $520M. The Yankees can afford to offer Soto $40M per year. And Jasson should be replacing Verdugo, not Soto. We’ve seen what Soto does to the lineup, and there’s no reason to think Jasson is nearly as good a hitter as Soto. On the other hand, there’s a very good chance he’s better than Verdugo.

They didn’t need to open a 40-man spot after DFA’ing Santana. Their 40-man roster count is 39.

Cashman — who adores Colorado players — has eyes for Ryan McMahon. Caleb Durbin and slumping Will Warren won’t be enough. He will sacrifice the Martian to try and hold off the Orioles.

Remember, Soto’s season in the Bronx has to reach the World Series. The Genius GM gave up two first rate starting pitchers to bring in Judge’s sidekick. He’ll need something to show for his brief time with the talented rental.

And who knows, yanks might win a pennant/ws this yr so yea steep price for 1 yr of juan. Thats what it takes to acquire superstars these days

Verdugo himself is a free agent so he wont bring them back anyone significant to fill a weakness so he is not going anywhere. Only playoff contenders will be interested and Yankees wont trade him to a Al team

Not going to happen as Verdugo is important to the clubhouse so they don’t want mess with that. They will let him walk but, they won’t mess with the team chemistry.

Get Soto or Judge reps at 1st to replace Rizzo. Opens up OF for Dominguez. With Soto’s elbow issues, it might be best to have him make the move.

Judge did get some work at first base prior to spring training and there was even talk about him being an “emergency 1st basemen” at one point. He hasn’t played the position since high school from what I understand.
