Red Sox Could Add Right-Handed Middle Infielder

By Steve Adams | July 30, 2024 at 9:09am CDT

The Red Sox continue to explore their options on both the rotation and bullpen markets, but they’re also looking around for a right-handed-hitting infielder who can factor into the mix at second base, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Infielder Vaughn Grissom’s minor league rehab window is up on Aug. 9, but McCaffrey suggests that Grissom could be optioned to Triple-A Worcester rather than plugged into the big league roster. Meanwhile, Sox skipper Alex Cora said after the acquisition of catcher Danny Jansen that fellow backstop Connor Wong could see additional time at second base; Wong hasn’t played a ton of second base recently but does have 227 innings there in his career.

The trade market isn’t exactly deep in right-handed-hitting infielders — or middle infielders in general — but there are nevertheless a handful of options who could fit the bill. Switch-hitting Angels infielder Luis Rengifo (who has torched lefties at a .373/.418/.529 rate) has reportedly been of interest to the Sox already. They’ve presumably at least held internal discussions on other options, including Colorado’s Brendan Rodgers, Detroit’s Gio Urshela, Oakland’s Abraham Toro (a switch-hitter) and Chicago’s Paul DeJong. The Reds’ Jonathan India has seen his name in trade rumors for the better part of a year, but Cincinnati has been reluctant to deal him. Within the Sox’ own division are Gleyber Torres and Isiah Kiner-Falefa, but Boston may be wary of sending any talent of note to a direct rival.

The mere fact that Cora suggested playing Wong at second base and declined to confirm that Grissom would be plugged right back into Boston’s second base slot speak to the fact that an addition is possible. Second base has been a black hole for the BoSox this season, as they’ve seen Grissom, Wong, Enmanuel Valdez, David Hamilton, Jamie Westbrook, Pablo Reyes, Romy Gonzalez, Ceddanne Rafaela and Zack Short combine to hit .192/.249/.293 at the position. The resulting 47 wRC+ is dead-last in the majors and suggests that Boston second basemen have been 53% worse than average with the bat.

The Red Sox actually depleted some of their middle infield depth yesterday when they traded Nick Yorke (notably, a right-handed hitter) to the Pirates in a swap of former first-rounders/top prospects that netted them right-hander Quinn Priester. That suggests that pitching is considered the more dire need, but it still shouldn’t come as a surprise if the Sox work multiple angles today and come away with another arm (or two) and a more established big league infielder than Grissom or the now-traded Yorke.

Boston was already known to be on the lookout for a right-handed bat — that much was reported last week — but at the time, it seemed a first base addition could also be possible. However, the Sox are now slated to send injured first baseman Triston Casas on a rehab assignment later today, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com (X link). That makes second base a far more likely spot to augment the lineup with a right-handed bat.

Priester was a fair return on Yorke. Neither is expected to develop into a star at this point, but both ought to become serviceable ML players. The Red Sox need the pitching more than yet another 2B.

They basically think Yorke is going to be an ok major league player and taking a shot on fixing Preister. The one thing the Red Sox are lacking is any quality or potential major league pitching options in their minors.

I have had the displeasure of watching QP every time he comes to the bump. Middling at AAA and most minor league stops as well.

Forget about what was given up, what was received is not worth receiving.

He was beaten out by Skenes, Jones, Falter, Ortiz, Keller, Gonzalez, and Perez to be a starter this year. Ortiz didn’t even start in the rotation, and at season’s start Falter looked abysmal coming off his spring.

The guy is going to bust.

That would be a dumb move. Bogaerts was overpaid, which is why we didn’t sign him in the first place. With his age and late injury concerns, I’d be wary of it unless we swap him for someone like Yoshida, but who is going to commit to that?

There is a -0- chance I’d trade Yoshida even up for Bogaerts. Yoshida is starting to hit like a mediocre DH at an expensive salary. At this rate, Yoshi is more of a ‘sigh’ guy that you are committed to, but that won’t kill you.

Yoshi still has a career 108 OPS+. That has some value. I’m guessing we could move him pretty easily with a $36M check.

Yorke is not ready and he struggled in double a. I don’t believe he’s all of a sudden a great major league hitter because he’s been good at AAA in a small sample size. They need a term proven solution for this year

King – Because Yorke was never in their longterm plans, they had no intention of promoting him because they didn’t want to risk him struggling at the major league level, thus hurting his trade value.

Yorke does not fit the bill, unfortunately. The Red Sox want a RH hitting infielder to improve their performance against LH pitching. Yorke is a RH hitter, but in AAA this year, he has a .492 OPS against LHP and a 1.071 OPS against RHP for some reason. He has been struggling against LH pitching.

We already know about the defensive woes, but those were at SS. No clue if he will be better at second.

I think we need to see before jumping to conclusions. I agree it’s not promising but they made the deal and he’s not going anywhere. He’s our future second baseman until they cut him.

Carmine… You’re comparing a player that has had a small sample size with a new team and he’s dealt with injuries throughout to a guy that has only been good for a month or so at AAA. Grissom has a higher likelihood of succeeding next year than Yorke. Neither are a factor for this year. It’s all moot anyway because next year you’ve got Mayer and story most likely up the middle with Campbell knocking on the door.

Regardless of what Chris Sale does or doesn’t do in the next few years, from Boston’s viewpoint, that trade was a stinker. Grissom appears to be made of glass and hasn’t proven anything. The Sox are not real contenders. Stick with Hamilton and Gonzalez and leave the farm system alone.

I disagree on the defense and he’s a 2b/3b. He often throws to the wrong bag. But It didn’t look like the Yankees gave up much for jazz. Dodgers will make a run at rengifo because of the freidman connection, and they tried to get him before

There’s really no harm in doing that, I think they are waiting to see if they could move him and Yorke to get something useful in return.

As soon as next season the team could have Campbell and Mayer patrolling the middle infield.

They could deal Meidroth as part of a deal to improve the team now, and not necessarily sacrifice a ton long term.

That would be John Henry’s ideal, playing Campbell and Mayer for as long as he can pay them the MLB minimum, then trade them both before they cost more.

        It’s the new business plan.

Meidroth is not yet eligible for the Rule 5 draft, so they can wait until 2025 to add him.

It’s great that Meidroth isn’t eligible for the rule 5 draft. But the team needs help at 2B now.

I wonder if they are waiting for Casas to come back and just trying to weather the storm. Once Casas is back, Romy could see more time at 2B which means they won’t need to call up a prospect.

Possibly? A Hamilton/Gonzalez platoon at 2B isn’t awful, with Rafaela getting most of the time at SS. And Westbrook isn’t necessarily weaker than Yorke here and now – similar numbers with Worcester. Yorke has a brighter future, because he is younger, but there is often a transition period when a player hits the majors.

Trade Yoshida. We already have too many infielders. It’s a logjam and won’t make us substantially better. Eat the Yoshida contract and plan for 2025.

I think if you eat part of the contract and get a decent right hand bat in return, someone might take him. He can still hit, it’s just Cora who doesn’t use him right and we have plenty of outfield guys. Someone like the Mariners maybe? They need offense.

Package him with a prospect for a decent bat and eat part of the contract. It’s addition by subtraction… Cora sits him a 1/3 of the time

You would have to eat all of his contract and throw something in (45 FV reliever) to incentivize someone to allow Yoshida to take a roster spot for a day before that team ultimately dumped him. No one is taking his contract. He has not and probably never will hit for enough power for the hit tool he has to ever show up in games. You have to be able to swat 20 home runs because if you can’t, there’s nothing to fear going right after a guy. And his hit tool isn’t so elite that he could overcome the lack of power (unlike Luis Arraez). Throw in Yoshida’s negative defensive value and that contract is arguably the stupidest thing Bloom did while in Boston

Troy Percival is correct, although the Trevor Story contract was bad too. We have Chaim Bloom to thank for turning John Henry off big contracts forever.

Carmine, I don’t know about forever. Part of FSG getting mad at Bloom for not ducking the Luxury Tax when he added Tommy Pham/Eric Hosmer and failed to trade JD/Xander (also in the discussion for stupidest thing Bloom did) is because FSG wanted enough money to pay Mbappe to play for that soccer team they own

    Also, Rengifo is infield/outfield versatile.

With, again, the unmentioned .439 BABIP. When the .439 reverts back to .300, then that .947 will revert back to ~ .670-.700. I mean, it is ONE HR in 51 ABs with a 9/3 K/W. That is decidedly not ‘wow’.

uvm – The Red Sox have already checked off every box for players they said they would acquire.

Relief Pitcher – Yohan Ramirez, Quinn Priester
      Starting Pitcher – James Paxton
      Righthanded Bat – Danny Jansen

If they do nothing more, they will still say they accomplished what they intended.

” it still shouldn’t come as a surprise if the Sox work multiple angles today and come away with another arm (or two) ”
    =============================
I’d guess that’s the headline. I don’t think they will try to upgrade for a RH IF. Wong could take a couple of reps at 2nd, and quite frankly, Romy is not doing a bad job at all. And Grissom also has some small chance of making it back.

Combine that with the fact that most of the pitching staff has hit the wall, 2 more pitchers is probably the bare minimum that we need.

Red Sox traded Sale because he was injury prone for a younger player that is injury prone! Plus they sent a lot of money to the Braves to pay Sale’s salary. I bet they wished they still had Sale…and the money…and just needed a 2nd baseman! Hey, the Braves just happen to have a 2nd baseman named Nacho Alvarez with great upside! He could probably be traded away for say a Tanner Houck if you can get it done by 6:00pm.

The Red Sox need another starter, a couple of bullpen arms and a RH hitter.

I suspect they are done. They could have brought Turner back for a cheap rate and they didn’t make that move. The biggest move they may make is a run at Eovaldi. I suspect they won’t do that either, even if the price is right.

I strongly suspect they are close to done. If we see anything today it may be along the lines of the Yorke deal or a couple of average bullpen arms.
