Tigers Recall Dillon Dingler, Select Bryan Sammons

By Darragh McDonald | July 29, 2024 at 1:37pm CDT

The Tigers announced a series of roster moves today, recalling catcher Dillon Dingler and infielder Ryan Kreidler. They also selected the contract of left-hander Bryan Sammons. One active roster spot was opened by last night’s Carson Kelly trade. The Tigers opened two more spots by optioning left-hander Easton Lucas and placing shortstop Javier Báez on the medical emergency/bereavement list. To open a 40-man spot for Sammons, right-hander Casey Mize was transferred to the 60-day injured list. Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reported last night that Dingler would be coming up to the majors for the first time.

Dingler, 25, was a second-round pick of the Tigers in 2020 and has been considered one of their top prospects since then. His defense behind the plate is considered strong but there’s more uncertainty with his offense, as he can hit for power but also strikes out a lot.

He has stepped to the plate just under 1500 times in his minor league career thus far, getting punched out in 27.5% of those. But he’s also displayed that power with 59 home runs. Overall, he’s hit .257/.344/.459 for a wRC+ of 114.

It appears he has made notable strides in the strikeout department this year, as he has only been punched out in 20.3% of his 301 Triple-A plate appearances. But he’s still hit 17 home runs and drawn walks at a 10% clip. All that leads to a .308/.379/.559 batting line and 137 wRC+. With Kelly now out of the picture, Dingler figures to get a decent amount of playing time, sharing the catching duties with Jake Rogers.

Sammons, 29, gets the call for the first time as well. He was drafted by the Twins back in 2017 and has never really been a top prospect. But he has been starting in the minors and might be needed to soak up some innings. Jack Flaherty was supposed to start tonight but was scratched as he’s likely to be traded at any moment. Beau Brieske is starting tonight in what is likely to be a bullpen game.

That could leave Sammons taking on some bulk innings. He has made 17 Triple-A starts this year with 84 innings pitched. In that time, he has a 4.18 ERA, 21.8% strikeout rate, 9.5% walk rate and 36.4% ground ball rate.

As for Mize, he landed on the IL July 3 due to a left hamstring strain. He’ll now be ineligible to return until 60 days from that point, which would be early September. Manager A.J. Hinch said it would be a “photo finish” to get back by that time, per Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic on X, so he might be able to return when first eligible.

He will. After they trade Flaherty, they will be down to a two man rotation! You and I can flip a coin to start a game too!

Let’s see what Dingler can do, hopefully set himself up as starting catcher next year. Going to run out of pitchers this year, rest of the season will be Skubal followed by random AAA call up.

Tigers Current Catchers were ranked #2 out of 30 in MLB Fangraphs War total amongts all mlb catchers. Between Kelly and Rogers they’ve had a great year. Yankees have the best C’s to date, followed by the Tigers at #2

wrong. Orioles are 24th in mlb FWar at C. Tigers have put up 3.3 war behind the plate. Orioles have only put up .7 Fwar. Shouldn’t correct people if you don’t know the numbers.

Adley R has 1.2 War in 66 Games at C
McCann has -.5 war playing 44 Games at C.

For a total of just .7 War from the C position compared to the Tigers 3.3 War.

Rogers has 1.6 War at C in 52 Games
Kelly has put 1.7 War in 55 Games.

Both are better than Adley and put up more War in almost a dozen games less. Adley gets all of his value at DH…not at C. Great DH , mediocre C

Do you think they should be buyers with their two best hitters on the IL (Greene and Carpenter) and with a three-man rotation due to injuries as well? At best they had a chance to squeak into the playoffs and likely lose in the first round. There is some good development going on so be patient, grasshopper.

See that’s the kicker. The strategy of picking up cheap free agents for 1-year contracts during the off season and shipping them out for prospects in July is a great one… if we actually get something back. None of these bets seem to be working out.

You mean they could gave done what Avila did and spent money on Magic beans like Baez instead if test driving tbeir young guys? This offseason is the time to fill the gaps not covered by the young guys they gave at bats to this year. Time gor Ilitchbto she’ll oit the cash because they have shown they can very competitive and there is a vote there to build on.

Baez is the exception not the rule. He was a good hitter until he got here. And on that note….. not every free agent works out, but I would give them credit for trying.
How ‘bout signing a Rodriguez, Martinez or an Ordonez ? Hmmmm ?

Baez was cheaper then the other two high-dollar SSs and didn’t have a QA…any real baseball fan knows that…why don’t you? p.s. posting drunk ain’t cool.

Agree that it would be awesome if they went out and found those types of players to pick up like they did in the 2000’s. I guess this offseason we will see what Harris/Greenberg can do.

Then stop posting when you’re drunk Colavito 😉 Only someone who is drunk (or maybe stoned since you changed your name there Senor Smoke) would be pumping Baez up the way he has played the past two years. That certainly explains some things.

So your rationale is that they should have signed Baez over Trea Turner and Correa because he was cheaper? What a great decision that turned out to be. Glad you support bad decisions.

The Tigers, after that crazy like 14-8 start to July, gained 1 GAME IN THE WILDCARD and passed ZERO TEAMS.

And since that put Greene on IL and lost 2 of 3 to Twins

So you think they actually had a chance at wildcard?

They improved their postseason odds from 3% to 7% in a nearly one month span of their best baseball in 2 years

      IT WASNT HAPPENING THIS YEAR

      Malloy, Lee (by Harris)

The C is 50% of the baterry. What we had with Kelly and Rogers was 2nd best in MLB on War totals in Fangraphs. Now we have to watch someone learn on the job. We gave up 8 runs….also noticed Petry and Todd Jones were talking mid game about how no one wants to throw to a rookie catcher. They were trying to be nice about it though. Hope he catches on….its way too hard to play C in mlb. I’m tired of rebuilds lol i just want to win. WIsh we would trade for Paredes types…i.e. players that can actually help our mlb team win.

After Flaherty gets tradedDinhler will likely be catching guys like Montero and Sammons who he played with in AAA so he should be good. I agree…for the price paid for Arozarena and Paredes the Tigers could have got involved with an eye on next year. Go get Yandy Diaz for the next two years if they are really not sure about Tork.
