Dodgers Outright Brent Honeywell

By Anthony Franco | August 21, 2024 at 4:20pm CDT

August 21: Honeywell has accepted his outright, per OKC broadcaster Alex Freeman on X.

August 20: Dodgers righty Brent Honeywell went unclaimed on waivers and was assigned outright to Triple-A Oklahoma City, according to the MLB.com transaction log. Honeywell has a previous career outright, so he can decline the assignment in favor of minor league free agency.

A top prospect when he was a member of the Rays’ system, Honeywell battled various injuries before getting a real look at the MLB level. He finally got that opportunity last season, combining for 52 1/3 relief innings between the Padres and White Sox. Honeywell posted serviceable middle relief numbers in San Diego before being hit hard with the Sox. That cost him his roster spot in Chicago and left him to sign a minor league deal with the Pirates over the winter.

The 29-year-old spent the first half of the year with Pittsburgh’s Triple-A team. He turned in a 4.85 ERA with a modest 19.6% strikeout percentage across 39 innings. While it wasn’t the most dominant showing, the Bucs called him up in July. He made two appearances before Pittsburgh designated him for assignment and lost him on waivers to Los Angeles. The Dodgers gave Honeywell 10 outings in low-leverage spots. He posted a 2.21 ERA through 20 1/3 frames. That’s despite a well below-average 15.2% strikeout rate and 6.5% swinging strike percentage. The Dodgers squeezed him off the roster over the weekend when they promoted Ben Casparius.

Honeywell carries 4.26 ERA across 80 1/3 innings over parts of three big league campaigns. If he reports to OKC, he’d be eligible for minor league free agency at the start of the offseason unless the Dodgers call him back up.

9/1 call him up and keep him. He’s got 3+ seasons of control left. He’s a decent project for next year.

If Graterol is ready on 9/1 you won’t see Honeywell.

Why because he helped our team while our 72 year old geezers were hurt? A hold save and a start at that. You are just a hater. You acted like Banda was gone soon too when he’s leverage. Get a firm grip little man. Ur chair smells.

He’s soft too I guess. Blue skies rags on every player unless they post a 0 everyday. He talks “metrics” on the daily like he has any idea. Btw Blue skies since you know so much they optioned Casper the ghost who was there for 3 days without pitching…

I give people a long leash before muting them. A few cranky posts isn’t enough. Disagreeing doesn’t do it either. I hold off until they are confirmed trolls who go to a lot of trouble to prove that aren’t here to talk baseball at all. We get a lot of them, unfortunately.

BlueSkies_LA Yeah, I see you. You probably could have muted me a long time ago lol. I see a silly comment and I give my input lol, it’s the Internet after all. But yeah, mute button is a friend, I just don’t understand the point of announcing it. Do we get money or something if it’s announced?

I know everybody has their own reasons for muting but for me some edgy comments or disagreeing isn’t enough. Repeat nasty is. I don’t announce when someone crosses that line, but to each their own.

I think we got that already. One problem with an itchy muting finger is it messes up the threading on these comment boards. You can miss a lot, even from posters who you haven’t muted. I preferred the Disqus comment system we had here long ago. It showed the muted comments in the thread and did not mute the replies. It also threaded a lot better than this one does.

He’s been bad. It’s only the flawed stat ERA that makes him look good.

Dodgers-ERA is not as applicable for relievers than starters but otherwise it is only a flawed stat in that it reflects the past and possibly minimized giving up runs that maximized winning games.

It doesn’t do that at all, sorry.

Your understanding is like a decade behind.

It’s the least predictive of the major pitching metrics. Which means it’s the worst at measuring what actually happened.

Any one stat taken by itself can be called the least predictive.

Great? Not really. Better than Joe Kelly? Probably. Since Crazy Joe was very inconsistent. Sometimes he went out, pitch 1 one inning and produce 3 outs, 2K and zero run. Sometimes its 4 runs and no out

Kelly has always been erratic but overall somewhat better on paper than Honeywell. He is just mediocre.

Okay I’ll bite. In spite of the churn. An interesting factoid about this season is currently no team is trending towards a 100 win season. It doesn’t take a lot to be the best if the best is 96 wins.

Blue: I don’t think anyone thinks the likes of Honeywell, Crismat, Lamet, Vanasco, N.Ramirez, Y. Ramirez, E. Hernandez etc were anything more than filler, but someone had to take to down innings through all the injuries. I loved your phrase “the gravity of past performance” or whatever it was you wrote, but you have to admit Banda has skated through the raindrops and churn or not, somehow the team is still on top. I doubt the FO would have chosen the churn path if there was another way to go. But it’s been a tough season for LAD hurlers.

I could agree with you if the churn wasn’t an annual occurrence. Some years more, some years less, but always quite a bit. A big part of it is Friedman likes to hunt for gold nuggets in the mud. Sometimes he even finds one, but in the process he also finds a whole lot of mud.

Honeywell did a good job for us this year, and I love the old school turtleneck. Lol. We caught a break when no one claimed him off of waivers, so bring him back up on Sept. 1, and if we can bring him to spring training, do so.
