Giants Place Patrick Bailey On IL With Oblique Strain

By Anthony Franco | August 20, 2024 at 7:49pm CDT

The Giants lost Patrick Bailey to the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Monday, because of a right oblique strain. San Francisco recalled Jakson Reetz from Triple-A Sacramento to take the open roster spot. Reetz will back up Curt Casali behind the plate for as long as Bailey is on the shelf.

That’ll be a significant blow defensively. Bailey is arguably the best defensive catcher in the majors. He has neutralized the running game with a 30.4% caught stealing rate. Statcast also grades him as a top-tier pitch framer. Bailey leads catchers in Defensive Runs Saved both this season and dating back to his MLB debut last year.

The former first-round pick has had a less consistent offensive track record. Despite showing flashes of promise at the plate, he’s a career .233/.292/.351 hitter. Bailey looked as if he’d turned a corner at the plate early in the year. He carried a .283/.354/.430 slash into the All-Star Break. He has fallen into a tailspin over the past few weeks, running a .115/.157/.135 line with a spike in ground-balls in the second half.

Recent slump aside, Bailey remains the Giants’ clear #1 option behind the dish. That job temporarily falls to Casali, who has only picked up 82 plate appearances in 24 games this season. He’s hitting .200/.309/.229 without a home run. Casali draws plenty of walks but doesn’t provide much else in the way of offense. The Giants trail the Braves by 3.5 games for the National League’s last playoff spot going into tonight’s game against the White Sox.

I’d rather see Blake sabol than Jackson reetz. Hell isn’t Elias Diaz available ?

I agree. Jackson Reetz is very weak offensively. Even worse than Casali. Lol. Blake Sabol can at least hit the ball and provide some value. Sabol hit a decent amount of HR last year for the Giants too.

5TUNT1N, I don’t disagree, but I think there might be a reason why it wasn’t Sabol. Maybe the team feels he needs more development in AAA. Handling a ML pitching staff is really hard. I don’t know, but there are thing we just don’t know about.

Reetz can’t hit or throw. I hope Casali plays every day for the most part. Not a good situation for the Giants right now to say the least

Watched a River cats game in the last week and sabol was the starting catcher.

Which says to me the Giants want Sabol playing every day in Sacramento, rather than backing up Casali and doing a lot of bench riding.

Farhan’s road to .500 hits a bump. He has assembled the classic mediocre team – this was the easy part of the schedule next month L’s will pile up and may push them under .500

The Giants spent half a billion to finish with a .500 record. That’s Mets-like.

Not close. You’re using future commitments, and applying it to this season alone. Compare apples to apples, Per Sportrac::

      Met’s payroll 2024 – $316,179,097
      Giant’s payroll 2024 – $200,922, 290.

      Weak ass post fred-3.

Regardless, $200M is still an embarrassing amount of money for that record.

I guess it’s no worse than being “world champions” and being behind my Pirates.

Embarrassing? Not really. If you think it is then the Cubs, Rangers, and Jays, should be even more embarrassed since they spent more, and all have worse records than the Giants. Isn’t it more embarrassing for the Met’s to have spent $116M more for 1 more win than the Giants have?

The Giants have the 11th highest payroll in MLB. AZ and SD are the only teams spending less, with better records. If you think the Giants payroll is embarrassing then you seem to be out of touch with the state of baseball in 2024.

No. Thinking it’s embarrassing is the only embarrassing part of the situation.

They spent half a billion to improve the team this past off-season (and brought in another manager). That’s what I’m referring to.

Okay, you’re referring to the money commitments made this offseason. Fine. But then you used it in reference to this season’s record. Again, you comparing apples to oranges.

Wow. That comment showed ZERO knowledge of the Bart decisions. He plays 4 of every 5 games for Giants with bailey as their catcher. But let’s hang on to him in case Bailey goes on DL in late August. Do you really post with your minimal logic FF expecting to get thumbs ups. Bart, is playing 4 of 5 in Pittsburgh like Bailey is playing 4 of 5 in SF. Using FF mathematics, how does your clueless post make ANY sense. Answer: It doesn’t. Dude, may I suggest thought. It doesn’t hurt. Thought. YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Claude you should get back on your meds. Farhan didn’t have to sign a loser in Murphy who he already churned once before and he could have easily kept Bart on the bench this season as the backup. Bart could also DH or possibly even play 1B where Lamonte has been stinking it up most of the year. Instead Farhan gave away a number 2 draft pick for nothing. Those are facts Jack

Bart got a shot, he played in 97 games in 2022, but just couldn’t take advantage of it. I’m happy that he got a second chance and is producing. But he isn’t the first guy to have his first team move on, and find success elsewhere.

Bart was given numerous opportunities to show the Giants he could take the job. Mostly just struck out a lot and not even at good pitches. He’s doing decent enough for the Pirates. Perfect example of change of scenery helping a player. Always was very professional and I wish him the best

The more this year progresses, the more I think getting the best out of young guys wasn’t Kaplers strongest asset. The progress young people have made since his departure might be coincidence, but then again, maybe it’s not.

I’m sure Ramos doesn’t miss him. Kapler never believed in him and didn’t do much to hide it.

Bailey a second half slump like last year. I heard he was a ridiculous 2-43!.A problem is their back up catchers are out for months or worse.
