Yankees Reinstate Jazz Chisholm

By Anthony Franco | August 23, 2024 at 9:55am CDT

August 23: The Yankees have now made it official by announcing Chisholm’s reinstatement.

August 22: The Yankees will activate Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the injured list tomorrow, reports Andy Martino of SNY (on X). New York optioned Oswald Peraza back to Triple-A this evening to open an active roster spot.

It’s a remarkably quick turnaround. Chisholm’s season initially looked as if it could be in jeopardy when he damaged the UCL in his left (non-throwing elbow) a couple weeks ago. The Yankees quickly made clear they expected Chisholm back this year, although they didn’t anticipate this level of progress. As recently as last Friday, New York’s big deadline acquisition was reportedly targeting a return at some point in September.

Barring a last-minute change of plans, Chisholm will instead get back on the diamond after a minimal stint. He’ll draw back in at third base, where Peraza and Oswaldo Cabrera have split the work over the last week and a half. That could be a significant boost to the New York lineup. Chisholm had been on an absolute tear early in his tenure in the Bronx. He already has seven homers with a .316/.361/.702 slash in 14 games as a Yankee.

Chisholm isn’t the only player who should soon return to the Yankee infield. Anthony Rizzo and Jon Berti are each scheduled to begin rehab assignments in the next few days (per the MLB.com injury tracker). Berti is headed to Double-A Somerset tomorrow; Rizzo is expected to join him there at some point this weekend. Position players can spend up to 20 days on a minor league rehab assignment.

Both Berti and Rizzo are on the 60-day injured list and have been out for multiple months. The former has only played in 17 games since the Yankees acquired him from Miami in a trade around Opening Day. Berti has been out since late May after suffering a significant strain in his left calf. Rizzo broke his right arm in a collision with Red Sox pitcher Brennan Bernardino in mid-June.

The Yankees called up 25-year-old Ben Rice to handle the majority of the first base work after that. Rice has struggled in his first look at MLB pitching, running a .180/.279/.374 slash. The rookie had a three-homer game against Boston last month but only has four longballs in his other 44 contests.

What does reinstate mean? This culture where we make up dumb words to mean something else. What happened to Jazz Chisholm is being activated from the DL tomorrow. Oops can’t say DL; IL tomorrow and pick some words from the thesaurus to make us look like the smartest people alive

The word “reinstate” has been used for centuries. It’s also been used in this DL/IL context for as long as I remember. Are you ok? What a silly thing to get upset about.

xavier – I agree with most of what you wrote, but “reinstate” most definitely is NOT the norm with regard to players returning from injury.

“Reinstate” is usually used for just non-injury returns, such as from the Restricted List, Paternity List, Covid List, etc.

One simple Google search proves “activate” is typically used for injury returns, and it’s even used in the body of the above article.

Thanks for the correction and your sources. Good to know!

The broader point that I made against the original poster still stands in that “reinstated” is a common word used in baseball in “returning from X list” contexts. But good to know re: activated.

We already changed DL to IL to accommodate you. Now, “reinstate” makes you angry? Do your parents make you wear a helmet before you can use the internet?

According to the Oxford Dictionary, “disable” can mean to “de-activate”. Thus, ‘DL’ is not politically incorrect. Neither is “selling” a player. You’re selling their contract, not the human being. Just more non-issues for the free education generation to get kerfuffled over.

I suspect the fact that you know what a thesaurus is (and can spell the word correctly) would indicate that this is a satirical comment, if so, well done.

“pick some words from the thesaurus to make us look like the smartest people alive”

You’re going to need more than a thesaurus.

“Reinstate” means to put something back to its former state.

So, putting someone back on the active roster from the IL makes perfect sense.

Also, injured players, not disabled ones, go on the injured list.

They keep putting Gleyber as leadoff. I was thinking they should have a slow-footed Austin Wells lead off for better results.

Wells would have a better on-base percentage and he can hit for power. As Bauer Poutage pointed out, Yankees could have a Kyle Schwarber lead-off hitter.

Creature, gleyber is bad no matter where you put in in lineup this year, bat him lower the better, not first. bonehead logic once again.you want leading off a guy you want with the most at bats , that’s not gleyber this year. he’s a lost cause. what kind of analytics guru is fishsticks anyway. not very good obviously.

Yankees fans don’t deserve Jazz after a bunch of them were trashing the move saying he’s a clubhouse problem. They should have been forced to suffer through someone like Kevin Newman.

Yankees haven’t had a true clubhouse problem between teammates since Chad Curtis in ’99 and they quickly dropped him. They’re coming from NY Post and Bleacher Report readers.

I remember both of the Chad Curtis music incidents. He really hates hip hop. One was when he was in Cleveland and he decided to mess with Kevin Mitchell who threw him around. The other one I remember was in Texas with Royce Clayton. He also wanted to fight Kapler because he wouldn’t except Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. Kapler is Jewish so you see the problem there. As a Yankee I remember he wouldn’t talk to Jim Grey over the Pete Rose interview and said it was a team decision and Torre had no idea about it. Didn’t ol Chad end up in prison?

@craven both are garbage people, but I would say Chad Curtis energy is streets ahead of Wander Franco. Wander was a 21 year old with a 17 year old, with the girls mother extorting him. He’s 100% a gross pedo scumbag. But, Chad Curtis was a 45 year old high school employee molesting 15 year old girls. Plus the whole “holier than thou” attitude. Curtis is Woody Allen level of scumbag.

Basically, wander Franco gives some Chad Curtis energy. While Chad Curtis gives “pope of chomos” energy.

@salarycap. Okay? But those teams didn’t get him. I’d say the same thing if another team got him and their fans were posting the same stuff. But, after acquiring Jazz, yankee fans were very vocal about how it was a bad move and they should have done xyz.

Saying the quiet part out loud… “reinstate” implies a negative connotation; only because it has been used most often in connection to resolved infractions or having fully served a suspension. At worst it’s a careless choice of words, probably not intentional, but sensitive enough given the number of responses questioning its use as opposed to “reactivated” which has often been used in these circumstances.
