Diamondbacks Receiving Trade Interest In Starting Pitching

By Mark Polishuk | November 9, 2024 at 12:27pm CDT

The Diamondbacks finished 27th of 30 teams in rotation ERA (4.79) last season, as a lack of production from the starting pitchers was one of the chief reasons why Arizona fell just short of the playoffs.  Despite these recent struggles, however, the D’Backs still got “significant interest from clubs looking for starters” during the GM Meetings last week, according to Will Sammon and Patrick Mooney of The Athletic.

It really isn’t a surprise that any team with any level of on-paper pitching depth is getting hits on their starters, though this level of interest indicates that much of the league might view Arizona’s 2024 rotation performance as something of a fluke.  After all, Merrill Kelly and Eduardo Rodriguez each missed the majority of the season with injury, Zac Gallen spent about a month on the injured list, and Jordan Montgomery just never seemed settled after missing Spring Training and only signing with the D’Backs on Opening Day.  Beyond this veteran group, younger and more controllable starters like Brandon Pfaadt, Ryne Nelson, and Yilber Diaz also had respectable showings as they were called on to cover innings in place of their injured teammates.

Sammon and Mooney didn’t specify which names drew any particular attention from trade suitors, though it might be safe to guess that Rodriguez’s trade value is fairly low, considering his injury-plagued year and the $66MM remaining on his contract through 2027.  Beyond E-Rod, any of Arizona’s other pitchers could be viewed as trade candidates depending on the club’s own plans, or if one rival team views a particular starter as a key fit.

The fact that the Diamondbacks have “more options and more quality,” Sammon and Mooney write, gives them a leg up in trade talks.  The Pirates are another team said to be drawing interest in their pitchers, though since Pittsburgh’s arms are mostly of the younger variety, the Pirates might appeal to teams in a bit of a rebuild stage rather than teams looking for a win-now piece for 2025.  It can also be assumed that the Bucs have pitchers (i.e. Paul Skenes, Jared Jones) who aren’t going anywhere, whereas the D’Backs can be more broadly open to at least listening on any of their starters.

Naturally, a team that got so little from its rotation in one season won’t be so quick to deal away from its starting depth the next year.  However, Gallen, Kelly, and Montgomery are all slated to be free agents next season, so the Diamondbacks could be open to moving a starter they don’t believe will be part of the long-term plan.  Montgomery in particular has been a subject of trade rumors since owner Ken Kendrick criticized his team’s decision to sign the southpaw, and while Montgomery unsurprisingly exercised his $22.5MM player option for 2025, that doesn’t mean the team and pitcher might still part ways via trade.

Trading long-term rotation staples like Gallen and Kelly might be a tougher decision for the D’Backs, yet moving a veteran arm might be preferable than moving one of the controllable younger pitchers.  Arizona could deal away a younger arm as part of an all-in approach to 2025 while their established stars are still around, though that clashes with the more measured style of GM Mike Hazen.  Pfaadt, Nelson, and Diaz could be counted on for larger roles if any of the impending free agents sign elsewhere next winter, and more boldly moving a pitcher like Gallen now would give the D’Backs a big return.

In terms of the needs the Diamondbacks have to address, Sammon and Mooney note that the team is looking for a high-leverage reliever who can perhaps step into a closing role.  Arizona’s bullpen was also a weak link last year, and figures to be more of a focus than a rotation that (on paper) could be fine if everyone is healthy.  Some offensive help also seems necessary with Christian Walker, Joc Pederson, and Randal Grichuk all currently on the free agent market.

I’ve heard it suggested the Tigers swap a pitcher.

Tigers should see if they can grab Gallen or Montgomery if Arizona is actually selling. Monty cant be as bad as he showed last year. The Tigers have lots of young pitching they can send the other way. Maybe expand the deal and ship Tork there for 1B and get some of Arizona’s good lower end prospects like Torin and Cerda.

The Diamondbacks had a team ERA of 4.62 but a team FIP of 4.09. That has to be one of if not the largest gaps in the league. That combined with the injuries they had suggests there are better days ahead.

Montgomery is almost certainly getting dealt. Past that not sure they deal anyone else.

“Montgomery is almost certainly getting dealt”…To deal Monty you’d almost certainly have to include $5-10M and still not get anything useful back in trade. A better option is to trade someone else and hope for a bounce back from Monty.

If he improves he can still be dealt at next year’s deadline. I just cannot see paying him and trading him for nothing too. Monty is probably as good a bounceback candidate as there is in baseball.

The owner or GM or whoever that was made some pretty stupid comments regarding Montgomery a while back. Montgomery might bounce back but it’s going to be with him wearing another uniform. If they can get between 10 and 15 million in salary relief that would be meaningful.

Monty is worth maybe half his salary. You’re looking at eating $12.5MM to move him. $5MM isn’t doing it.

A guy like him is a bit of an eye of the beholder situation. If Pivetta and Severino are worth 21 million then who knows. I imagine the Rangers wouldn’t mind having him back.

Think Montgomery would be QO-eligible after the 2025 season, which is some extra value for a team acquiring him in the off-season if he does bounce back.

Awww dude, excellent call. I never considered that. I wouldn’t be keen on my RS acquiring him, but there at least a decent chance he can revert.

But the QO can be viewed like you were acquiring Monty for maybe $12.5M with a $21M team option. There is some attraction to that.

If Arizona would take candelario from Cincinnati I think the reds would take Montgomery

That might actually work ! Candelario gets a lot of slack from reds fans but his numbers after his torrid start the first 2 months were better than league average.

I like the fit but I think Candelarios contract is worse. Diamondbacks could use a righty hitter at 1b or DH so the fit makes sense for sure.

Kendrick’s comments were meant to get Montgomery to pass on his option. It didn’t work.
Having starter depth is important especially when three of them will be FA’s next year.
They have to replace Walker, Pederson, and Grichuk and rebuild the pen

Sure but once he didn’t opt out its time to trade him.

The basic concept of a trade is the guy you are trading is worth more to someone else than he is to you. And that’s certainly the case with Montgomery

I see if any starter is traded in the off season, it is Montgomery and it sounds like St.Louis is into dumping some salary.

St.L gets Montgomery SP, Cecconi SP/RP, Walston SP , Del Castillo C

AZ gets Arenado 3B, Helsley RP , CASH$$ (bring down Arenado contract)

The Diamondbacks have Suarez. And I don’t think Helsley is going to be dealt. And good gosh the Cardinals definitely don’t need another catcher. I wouldn’t mind Montgomery coming back of Arenado is dealt in a separate deal and that frees up some money. Montgomery for Matz is about right.

Dbacks have plenty of options. Their
starting pitching really isn’t that bad when they’re all healthy. With the looming free agents I think trading Pfaadt and Nelson would be a huge risk. I think trading Gallen or Kelly, and attempting to trade JMont, is very possible. If they’re in on the market for more pitching, they’re free agents next year Gallen and Kelly can be traded now to fill the loss of some of their hitters. They could get a good return. But also, I love Gallen and Kelly, so I’d prefer they just add to the rotation. Pfaadt and Nelson will still get their games in 2025 and they can be the guys in 2026.

Walker and Pederson were two of their three best hitters last year, and the third, Marte, is 32 next season. Losing those guys is gonna be a massive problem, especially since both were lucky finds to begin with and quite old (Grichuk too). And most of their starting staff is now in their walk year. Their window is closing fast.

I don’t know I don’t think anything said on either side (player/ownership) is unforgiveable. I realize their may be some legitimate hard feelings on both sides as well as Montgomery’s realization he bares some fault as well as the advice he got from Boras (Got himself talked into waiting and then dance partners went away so to speak) Oops.

For millions of dollars I can live with it. There’s always “revenge travel” to burn some $ on – I love that term. Go buy an expensive watch or painting.Help the Economy you know.

I think if AZ is smart just allow Montgomery to have a full normal Spring training and get off to a good start. AZ potentially as an above average offense. They will lose and add some players in the next few months.
There are some kind of big decisions to make and how it will effort their total pay roll in the next 5 years or so

No reason AZ (in my book) can’t look to rebound in 2025 and challenge for division against the big bad Dodgers, SF and SDP. It should really be a competitive dogfight FWIW as Capt. Obvious one of my alter egos chimes in.

Have a Good Day. Baseball IS the Best!

We fans here on MLBTR are the only people who can see the possibility that Montgomery had a fluke year and that it is a distinct possibility that he will have a bounce back year. The GM of the Dbacks is oblivious to that possibility and so stupid that he will do something really stupid like dump Montgomery and eat all of his salary. Then My team will pick him up and he will lead us to the post-season. Do posters here actually believe that?

Diamondbacks eat $9 million of his 2025 salary.
Give Padres $1 million of international free agent pool

    Diamondbacks get
Ryan Bergert or Sean Reynolds and a couple of mid level prospects.
