Braves Sign Enyel De Los Santos To Minor League Deal

By Leo Morgenstern | December 24, 2024 at 8:37am CDT

Earlier this month, the Braves signed reliever Enyel De Los Santos to a minor league deal, according to his transaction log on MLB.com. The right-hander was non-tendered by the White Sox earlier this offseason.

De Los Santos struggled through his first three MLB seasons with the Phillies and Pirates before breaking out with the Guardians in 2022. He went 5-0 over 50 games, pitching to a 3.04 ERA and a 2.98 SIERA. He earned his first career save that summer and made his postseason debut that fall. The righty took on a bigger role in Cleveland’s bullpen the following season, pitching in 70 games (65 2/3 innings) and often entering in higher-leverage spots than he had the year before. His strikeout rate dropped, his walk rate climbed, and his overall numbers weren’t quite as impressive (3.29 ERA, 4.06 SIERA). Still, it was a solid season and another step for De Los Santos toward establishing himself as a reliable reliever.

During the 2023-24 offseason, the Guardians dealt De Los Santos to the Padres in exchange for Scott Barlow. It was a slightly surprising move for the Guardians, who are typically the ones trading veteran pitchers on expiring contracts for younger, cheaper arms, not the other way around. Ultimately, the trade didn’t work out on either side. Cleveland released Barlow in September amid a rough second half. Meanwhile, De Los Santos ended up pitching for three different teams and struggled in various ways with all of them. After a disappointing start with the Padres, he found himself headed to the Yankees ahead of the trade deadline. New York designated him for assignment a few weeks later, and he finished the season with the White Sox. Overall, he put up a 5.20 ERA in 64 innings of work, although his 3.86 SIERA looks much more promising.

There is no doubt the 2024 campaign was rough for De Los Santos. However, there is still plenty to like about his arm. For one thing, he’s got youth on his side; he’ll turn 29 tomorrow on Christmas Day. Moreover, he has never gone on the injured list. As for his production, from 2022-23, he pitched 119 innings with a 3.18 ERA and 3.57 SIERA. That kind of performance in the middle innings would improve every contending team’s bullpen. What’s more, De Los Santos had strong underlying numbers over his first 44 games with San Diego before he was traded. His strikeout and walk rates were up at their 2022 levels, and his mediocre 4.46 ERA was more than a full run higher than his sterling 3.21 SIERA. His numbers took a turn for the ugly after the trade deadline, but that’s a relatively small sample size to work with. There is little reason to worry that the version of De Los Santos who can be a durable, high-strikeout pitcher has disappeared for good.

So, the Braves are betting on that upside by signing De Los Santos to a minor league deal and presumably inviting the righty to big league camp. Atlanta had one of the best bullpens in the league in 2024, but there are still a few spots at the back end that should be up for grabs this spring.

A healthy Riley, Albies, Murphy and the fact Strider says he will be ready to pitch in spring training games is huge. Braves made it to the postseason with castoffs last season. AA will address needs.

@Skyrider….do you honestly believe Strider will be the Strider of ’23 this coming year?? Acuna’s year after his last knee injury was a lot closer to average than Ronald-like. Keep the powder dry AA and let’s go in ’26 with only 20% initial tax rate.

Listening to Strider, he is high on himself, so I have more confidence in him than Acuna going into this season.

@Outfieldflyrule??: True that Acuna’s 22 season after the knee injury was fairly pedestrian, but he won the MVP the following season. Strider also didn’t undergo TJS. He got the brace. No tearing of his ACL.

Definitely a luxury tax reset for the Bravos this year. Let Acuña and Strider heal up in ’25 and bring on 2026! Braves ain’t paying 50% taxes for third time offender.

I haven’t seen not one reliable article where the Braves or Anthopoulos claimed they would increase payroll. The only thing remotely close is an interview where Anthopoulos said that for the right situation they would be willing to exceed the competitive balance tax threshold. Nothing from their actions this off season seems to indicate that they PLAN on spending more money on payroll.

@thunderlips: “They are already.” No. No they aren’t. Their current luxury tax obligation sits at $216M. That’s well below the first luxury tax barrier at $241M.

This is an insurance signing. Against any MLB salary, a minor league deal is a fair premium, too.
    Just another smart depth move.

There really is a massive disparity between the markets for relief and starting pitching. Soroka gets $9 million while a very long list of relievers have signed for under $3 million.

Personally, it’s refreshing to see several GMs still realize a quality bullpen can be constructed on the cheap.

De Los Santos is a very sensible reclamation project for the Braves.

Hence why Holmes & Hoffman and others in the recent past are marketing themselves as starting pitchers.

Braves fans: The Dodgers, Mets and Yankees are considered “The Big Three” because of the millions of dollars they’ve spent on talent. My question is, where do the Braves and Phillies stand? Are they part of “The Big Five” despite not spending like the first three?

@avenger… Phillies are jumping up making it a ‘Big Four’ because they know their window is closing fast. Braves will stay at the top of the ‘Little 26’.

Outfieldflyrule??: Well, my team (White Sox) is anchoring the Little 26, although I think thet’re anchoring the American Association, so the Braves look pretty good to me.

Nashville: But does that put them up with the Dodgers, Mets and Yankees? By that I mean, have they spent that money wisely? They haven’t gone nuts with the top FA like the others, but do they have to to keep up with those three?

@avenger: The largest FA contract given out by the Braves under AA’s tenure is the 4 year $64M deal to Ozuna 3 years ago. They spend their money extremely well. Biggest contracts via extensions on their young core.

Not pathetic at all. How much of their payroll do you want them spending on Luxury Tax? No one will ever buy a “luxury tax” jersey, or buy a ticket to see “luxury tax” play. Payroll should be covering the players on the field.

After the carnage their 2023 offense inflicted, 2024 was “World Series or Bust”, which proved to be BUST. Ill take the “walk softly and carry a big stick” approach..I guess!

@Holden: Buehler for $21M? Awful signing. Glad to see the Braves avoid him. Atlanta has plenty of young pitching that could deliver similar or better results on the MLB minimum salary. Better for luxury tax avoidance and better for young pitchers to be given a chance over big name busts in waiting.

I know that depth moves are low risk and I shouldn’t care as a fan, but I haven’t liked most of the depth moves the Braves had made this offseason. They all stink. And if our big dawgs go down, are these guys suppose to hold down the fort at all? Idk. You would like to see guys with a little more upside.. not that there is typically much more to begin with but these guys feel pretty tapped out
