Yankees Interested In Thairo Estrada

By Mark Polishuk | December 8, 2024 at 8:04am CDT

The Yankees are interested in signing Thairo Estrada, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports (X link).  New York is now the second team known to be in on Estrada’s market, as the Rockies were also linked to the veteran earlier this week.

There’s plenty of familiarity between the two sides, as Estrada was an international signing for the Yankees back in 2012 and he appeared in 61 games for New York during his first two Major League seasons (2019-20).  It wasn’t until after the Yankees traded Estrada to the Giants in April 2021 that the infielder broke out as a productive big leaguer, hitting .266/.320/.416 over 1203 plate appearances for San Francisco during the 2021-23 seasons.

Estrada’s performance dropped off badly last season, however, and the Giants outrighted him off their 40-man roster at the end of August after Estrada batted only .217/.247/.343 in 381 PA.  Wrist problems plagued Estrada for much of the summer, further hampering an offensive approach that has never led to much hard contact.  Estrada has also been limited in his capacity to get on base, and his 2.6% walk rate in 2024 was the second-lowest of any player in baseball with at least 350 PA.

In the wake of this down year, Estrada surely isn’t being viewed as a starting candidate in the Bronx, though his versatility makes him an interesting candidate for a part-time or bench role.  The large majority of Estrada’s MLB playing time has come at second base, but he has seen a decent amount of time as a shortstop while also chipping in as a third baseman and corner outfielder.  Estrada’s career splits are pretty even, yet on paper, his right-handed bat could complement the left-handed hitting Jazz Chisholm Jr., who is expected to hold down the starting role at either second or third base.

Chisholm and shortstop Anthony Volpe have two of the starting infield jobs spoken for, and Chisholm’s versatility gives New York some flexibility in deciding how to address second or third base.  Conceivably, the Yankees could add Estrada to their in-house collection of DJ LeMahieu, Oswaldo Cabrera, and Oswald Peraza and let that whole group serve as something of a rotating bench/platoon mix while rotating Chisholm between the keystone and the hot corner.  Or, the Bronx Bombers could go bigger with more of an everyday infield option, though those endeavors are probably on hold until the Yankees learn whether or not Juan Soto will be returning to the team.

    No surprise. Another IFer the Yankees traded (for cash considerations) and got nothing of value back.

      Because he’s not worth anything in trade. I mean, he was dropped by SF.

        After three seasons though, and likely because of that wrist injury. He was productive during those three seasons, much more than the Yankees IFers.

          Clip, I’d like them to maybe sign one of the Kim’s for the infield. Elite defense. Depending on if they want a right or left handed batter.

          @Yankee

          He had a .460 OPS and assisted in a small amount of games that year. Maybe they had more value prospects that needed to be added to the 40-man roster. Nothing to get upset about.

          Yeah, Knicks, I’m not upset they got rid of him. It’s more about trying to acquire him again, and too late. If it’s a minor league thing, I don’t care.

          Soto announcement coming today or tomorrow though!

    The Yankees have pre-arb utility infielders that are former top prospects, and Caleb Durbin.

    I will believe it when I see it.

      They want guys like Durbin and Peraza to keep getting game action in the minors as opposed to rotting on the bench. I wouldn’t be surprised if Dominguez starts in AAA if he doesn’t have a strong S.T. showing. Judge didn’t play full-time until he was 25.

    Believing he’s a stud and finding out halfway through the year that he’s not is a risk the Yankees aren’t in a position to take considering Cole and Judge have about four years of their prime left. Estrada, who shouldn’t have been traded away to begin with imo, would be a solid plug and play at second.

      The Yankees could definitely afford to “find out if Durbin a stud” for half a year given the plethora of seemingly light hitting glove first versatile infielders they have….Peraza, Cabrera, and others at the AAA level…..if they did indeed find out at the All Star break that Durbin wasn’t a “guy”, there are always lots of infielders available for a bag of balls that can play second base adequately given a strong infield that would include upgrades at 3rd and 1st…..the Yankees always seem to admire players that can play more than 1 position that are coming off their worst years…..like Estrada…..play your own kids and save the money….

        Agreed man……if in fact they sign Soto, they’ll be looking for cost efficiency in their lineup given their needs to fill 3rd, 1st, relief, and a starter……..we both say give Durbin a chance to prove he isn’t a guy……

      The Yankees are going to lose the Soto Sweeps and they are going to stink again, Stanton will be back to swinging through pitches, they let Torres walk, will end up overpaying Bregman and/or Pete Alonso.

        Honestly, I hope they sign Soto because I’d like to see Pete Alonso back with the Mets. Their lineup is looking rather soft without Torres and Soto, and to a lessor extent Anthony Rizzo.

        So in our world, “stink again” applies to a team that annually makes the playoffs and last year made the WS…albeit losing but still made it…….We’ll see with Soto, Torres has a $.10 cent baseball head,…Stanton does swing through a lot of pitches and gets hurt but oh man…when he makes contact……don’t think Bregman will ever be a Yankee given his Astro past, and don’t think the Yankees are going back to the Giambi days with Alonso with power but deficient 1st base skills…….

      Jerk him around? You mean like they have Cortez, Schmidt, Gil, Volpe, Wells, Cabrera, and as it seems, Dominguez. For all the talk of them being FA head- hunters, they’ve done a good job of blending in prospects (those mentioned) and using the farm to acquire key players (Soto, Jazz, Holmes).

        @Joe says…

        Blaming Soto’s potential contract for the Yankees’ bargain-bin shopping spree is a cop-out. This ‘norm’ has been brewing long before Soto was in pinstripes, thanks to questionable roster management and a front office addicted to half-measures. Estrada isn’t a budget choice because of Soto—it’s because the Yankees’ spending priorities are perpetually out of sync with building a championship-caliber team.

    Estrada is better than people think. Good glove, plenty of contact.

    His bat looked slow last year. Almost certainly due to injury. So pitchers went right after him and all his numbers cratered.

    If back to health, he’s a good bench or stopgap piece. Maybe give Durbin a month or 2 in AA then turn Estrada into a utility guy.

    Thairo is a solid player when healthy. He hasn’t been right since he broke his forearm on an inside pitch in 2023.
    Taking a flier on a guy like this, who’s still under 30, is a smart value play. He can also play shortstop in a pinch or the OF, he’s got some speed and can hit you some homers too. He would be a nice fit in Colorado or the White Sox.

    I seri doubt the Yanks are looking at him as the starting 2b. It even says it in the article. Bench player or maybe even a minor league depth deal. Maybe they plan on using Cabrera or Perazza in a deal and just want to have depth in the minors? I mean he was out-righted so it’s not like he’s held a lock on a major league job. This is likely an organizational depth move, at best.
