Angels Still Seeking Multiple Relievers

By Steve Adams | January 27, 2025 at 10:05am CDT

The Angels are positioned as well as any team to make some late-winter additions as free agents linger on the market — arguably even better-positioned than most. They’ve primarily been adding depth on minor league deals over the past couple weeks, but they’re still looking to improve the big league roster. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that they’ve told “at least one agent” that they have two or even three bullpen spots they’d still like to fill.

A look at the current composition of manager Ron Washington’s relief corps underlines that area of opportunity. Presumptive closer Ben Joyce is the game’s hardest-throwing pitcher by a wide margin, averaging 102.1 mph on his four-seamer. He enjoyed a breakout showing with a 2.08 ERA in 34 2/3 innings this past season and is all but assured a spot, barring injury. Veteran lefties Brock Burke, Jose Quijada and Jose Suarez are all out of minor league options and were all tendered contracts in arbitration. Health permitting, they’ll be on the Opening Day roster as well.

Beyond that quartet, there’s basically no certainty. Righty Chase Silseth, with 1.071 years of MLB service, is next up in terms of “experience.” The aforementioned trio of lefties are the only relievers on the Halos’ roster with even two years of MLB service time. Right-hander Robert Stephenson, signed to a three-year deal last winter, will of course take over one spot once he’s healthy, but he had Tommy John surgery on April 30. He could miss most or all of the season’s first half.

The Halos have their share of interesting candidates for relief spots. Righty Ryan Zeferjahn, acquired from the Red Sox in exchange for Luis Garcia, looked outstanding … in a sample of 17 big league innings. He’s had substantial command problems in the minors, however. Sam Bachman is a former top-10 pick with a sinker that sat nearly 97 mph in relief in 2023, but the Angels have continued to work him as a starter in the minors (to mixed results). Rule 5 pick Garrett McDaniels posted gaudy minor league numbers with the Dodgers last year but topped out in Double-A (where he only pitched three innings).

Suffice it to say, there’s room for multiple veterans to supplement the group — or at the very least for one more veteran arm. The Angels are nowhere close to the luxury tax barrier at the moment, sitting a bit under $206MM in CBT obligations, per RosterResource. That gives them more than $35MM, assuming the luxury tax is some form of hard barrier that owner Arte Moreno would prefer not to cross. The Angels have only paid the luxury tax once under Moreno’s ownership, which came way back in 2004 and saw the team pay out under $1MM in total penalties. The Angels were close to the tax threshold in 2023 but narrowly ducked under the line thanks to a massive late-August waiver purge after a failed deadline push for contention.

The relief market has been the slowest corner of free agency this winter, although it’s picked up steam in recent weeks with Tanner Scott, Jeff Hoffman, A.J. Minter, Jose Leclerc, Andrew Kittredge, Paul Sewald and Chris Martin (among others) all coming off the board since Jan. 10. Kirby Yates and the Dodgers have reportedly been working to finalize their own deal, though as of yet nothing has been formally announced.

The remaining collection of free agents still features several notable names, headlined by Carlos Estevez, David Robertson, Kenley Jansen, Kyle Finnegan, Tommy Kahnle, Phil Maton, Andrew Chafin and Tim Hill, among many others. As shown in MLBTR’s Contract Tracker, the Angels took a similar bulk approach to rounding out the bullpen last offseason, signing six relievers to big league deals — three of which came in mid-January or later. That didn’t work out as hoped, but it nonetheless seems they’ll take another run at using the late stages of the market to build out the bullpen this winter.

That should be a relief to the relievers still out there.

What happened to the Angels roster construction? Back in the day we always had a top 10 rotation and a lights out bullpen! Sign Flaherty and Finnegan and then when Stephenson returns our pitching will keep us in most games. If Moore developed at 2nd base we only need to add a slugging 3rd baseman next season and we will be a playoff contender going forward. Paying Rendon $38M yearly killed our ability to compete the past 5 years!

Rendon was so good with the Nationals before he signed that deal with the Angels, I remember liking Rendon more than Soto at the time.

His contract will go down possibly as the worst of all time in MLB. The five seasons with the Angels have been a complete no show. No reason to think he gets it together in ’25 or ’26, probably DFA him and take an 80M hit over the next two seasons.

A case study for the risk in long term back-weighted contracts. Very risky to sign a deal like that with any player.

Rendon signing with the Angels was a disaster once again Arte Moreno took matters in his own hands. He stated he hand picked Anthony Rendon which has handcuffed the Angels payroll for 5 years pushing our budget close to the ceiling Anthony Rendon was a stud for the Washington nationals with the Angels damaged goods what really ticks me off. Rendon has stated this is not a priority this is just a job. We’d all love to be in his shoes, playing major-league baseball so ungrateful. Shame on you for wearing an Angels uniform.

Another reason giving out that kind of guaranteed payday is risky, some players check out. If you’re not a competitor and your checks are in the bank, what accountability are you really held to? It’s awful business to lay out those deals, the risk is off the charts.

Rendon puts his shades on after the game, gets on the plane, has a couple vodka tonics.

Just another ballgame. My game check in the mail? Yep. Another vodka tonic please. I don’t blame him.

I’d say that’s accurate. They are slotted for the cellar in the AL West.

They have some upside with Schanuel, Neto and O’Hoppe. Rengifo is a nice player. Soler could be a good DH. Holes at 3B and in RF. Starting pitching is shaky.

Arte hired a series of inept front office people and seriously skimped on scouting and development. As a result the Angels have needed to pay free agent rate dollars for mediocre or worse pitching.

So the front office that drafted Weaver, Skaggs, Corbin, Santana, Saunders, etc. was replaced by front offices that sucked.

To further add to the problems, those front offices traded away Clevinger and Bradish.

Moore is not ready. What is this fantasy Angel fans have? He needs work on his defense and he needs time to develop and refine in all areas before he’s a big leaguer. He needs to be a depth piece and a September call up.

Why don’t the Angels wait until the Spring Training cuts

    SMH

They know their bullpen is a weakness and now they are looking for bullpen help when everyone (of note) is signed????
    This is not very timely!!!!

This man. The angels had a tip top BP, have $35 in cap space and Flaherty can be had for a discount given his injury history. It makes so much sense that one can only bet the Dodgers end up signing him for the league minimum instead.

Flaherty is apparently expecting 5-7 years, and there is no way on Earth the Angels write a deal on a P for that many years. They did 5 years on Wilson and that apparently cured Moreno on writing deals that long for SP.

The problem with bullpen pitching is it is famously mercurial. A guy who was lights-out one year is average the next, maybe even less than average. The fact the bullpen was good in 2024 means less than you make it out to be.

Stephenson may require all of 2025 just to see if he can still get guys out, Joyce is far from a finished product, and the fact that Suarez is still part of the conversation should alarm all fans.

It’s a shame that Joyce doesn’t have a mentor, as Lee Smith was to Percival, or as Percy was to Frankie. Having that experienced voice to speak with every day in the pen, going over situational pitching and passing along life lessons was great for the development of both Percy and Frankie.

          -Strengthens the rotation

          -Pushes the young arms

Detmers needs to start at triple-A. He got no one out last year and no one out at Triple-A.

          (Flaherty, Lopez, Montgomery)
          Kikuchi
          Anderson
          Soriano
          Hendricks

That’s your probable rotation. Kochanowicz is next in line, then Detmers and the rest.

They have to be strategic in who they sign this year bc more help is on the way: at least Christian Moore, 2 top 100 SP prospects and their no. 2 overall pick this year. And they’ll have to give up their 2nd rounder to any free agent with a qualifying offer.

You can’t build a team that way. It takes depth and that’s what Moore is right now until he proves otherwise. He’s not ready for the majors. Injuries happen. Top prospects suddenly are not top prospects. They need a proven every day second baseman. If Moore forces his way onto the team, great, then they trade their second baseman and replace him with Moore. But you cannot start the season with this kid.

    Standard operating procedure.

Target some players early, then wait for the other players no one wants.

I disagree, .I don’t think many of the players left out there are players no one else wants. I feel many of them are just victims of the market and as a result have to “wait their turn”

Carlos Estevez, David Robertson, Kenley Jansen, Kyle Finnegan, Tommy Kahnle, Phil Maton, Andrew Chafin and Tim Hill are all going to be on MLB rosters in 2025

A 500 season and a highly ranked farm system will turn me around.

          Both are very “doable”..

The farm system may need a little extra time, but they have a lot of possibilities with all those arms.

Give it two years and you could be happy. I’ve been doing a series on the rebuild and a couple of things are obvious.

          1. 11 players combining to make $105 million per year come off the books over the next two years.

          2. We have an interesting collection of arms on the farm.

          3. We seriously lack positions players on the farm.

If Perry can manage to trade intelligently and nail the second overall pick, the 2017 Angels should feature a good, young pitching staff and money to spend on a couple of impactful free agents.

We were just discussing your lack of activity and hoping you are OK the other day. Good to see you around.

    The reliever strategy:
“That didn’t work out as hoped, but it nonetheless seems they’ll take another run at using the late stages of the market to build out the bullpen this winter.”
    Let’s do it again!

Mark Leiter Jr or Jonathan Loaisiga for Luis Rengifo. Don’t really think Angels would have interest in Stroman.

      @Fernando P
I would pass on that trade. I would want a lot more for Rengifo then the two offered.
Rengifo would jump right into the everyday lineup, whereas the two offered aren’t reliable, nor can be guaranteed to stay on the roster the entire season.

@AngelsFan – I was thinking both guys have multiple years of control at reasonable salaries. Don’t imagine anyone with any past success being available in free agency at a 3-5M salary. But probably not a match for Rengifo.

The only deal to make from the Angels standpoint would be to essentially buy a good prospect or two from the Yankees.

Stroman at full contract plus somebody like Spencer Jones or George Lomard for Rengifo (who I think a lot of fans don’t appreciate). But that’s a tough pill for the Yanks.

Perhaps go Stroman with Arias and Hampton instead of the one blue chip prospects as a middle ground.

@Halos – Imagine Yankees would eat half of the 18M for a much lower prospect cost. Just don’t see them giving up two top 10 prospects just to get rid of Stroman’s full salary.

They’ve were hesitant to lose two more draft picks to sign another qualified free agent like Christian Walker.

Remember that the 2021 draft of all pitchers is major league ready now…. Or are they mostly Trash Pandas?

I did a rundown of that draft class in May of last year and it hasn’t changed much.

      Silseth has tasted the show.
Bachman was hurt and looks like he’s in the bullpen.
Bush is crushing it for the White Sox.

The rest are high A to AA and not really showing a ton.

@halosheavenjj. So far in general the 2021 draft in the 1st round looks bad. McClain and merrill are the only standouts.

Let’s hope the 2025 draft class is far more successful.

“The Angels are positioned as well as any team to make some late-winter additions as free agents linger on the market — arguably even better-positioned than most.”

Everyone knows that, but Moreno won’t do it…ever to bolster his pitching staff. Home runs sell tickets so he pays way too much for declining superstar bats and leaves pitching to bounce backers and hope.
