Dodgers To Have Another Meeting With Roki Sasaki

By Darragh McDonald | January 14, 2025 at 2:34pm CDT

Right-hander Roki Sasaki will need to pick his next team in the next few days and has reportedly narrowed his choice to the Blue Jays, Padres and Dodgers. He was recently in Toronto and San Diego to meet with those clubs and will now be meeting with the Dodgers today, per a report from Fabian Ardaya and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

This tracks with the plan previously laid out by Sasaki’s agent Joel Wolfe at the Winter Meetings back in December. Wasserman, Wolfe’s agency, initially hosted several clubs for meetings at the company’s Los Angeles headquarters. After that, the plan was for Sasaki to head home to Japan for the holidays, then visit some of his top choices in their home cities. One of the notable differences with the second round of meetings is that clubs have been permitted to bring players.

Sasaki’s decision is arguably the most impactful one of the offseason. He is considered to be capable of stepping right into a big league rotation, possibly delivering ace-level performance. He has a 2.10 earned run average in his Nippon Professional Baseball career, striking out 32.7% of batters faced. Such a player would normally require a massive financial investment but Sasaki will sign for a just a few million bucks.

Since he is coming to North America at the age of 23, Sasaki is considered an amateur by MLB’s rules, which require a player to be 25 years old with six professional seasons of experience to be considered a professional. That means he is subject to the international bonus pool system, under which each team gets about $5-8MM annually to spend on such players. A team can trade for more pool space but can’t increase it’s initial allotment by more than 60%. The signing team will also owe a posting fee to the Chiba Lotte Marines, though the size of that fee is calculated based on the size of the contract, so it will also be small.

It’s a decision that therefore will have massive ramifications for years to come. It’s unknown what criteria Sasaki will be using to pick his next team, since money seemingly won’t be a big factor, so the baseball world has been left to mostly guess about his priorities.

The Dodgers have been seen as a frontrunner for a long time, due to various reasons. Japanese players often prefer to be on the West Coast, in part due to its relative proximity compared to East Coast clubs. The Dodgers are also a very successful franchise, having a postseason run going back more than a decade now and a World Series victory just a few months ago. They also have other Japanese players on the roster in Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, which could be a draw for Sasaki.

On the flipside, there are arguments against the Dodgers being his next team. It’s possible that Sasaki might prefer to be away from the big spotlight of Los Angeles. Wolfe has mentioned that Sasaki wasn’t always fairly treated by the Japanese media and might benefit from being in a smaller market. It’s also theoretically possible that Sasaki could find more endorsement deals on a team other than the Dodgers, where he wouldn’t be in the shadow of Ohtani and Yamamoto. The Dodgers also have a long list of pitchers who have succumbed to significant injuries in recent years, which could perhaps give Sasaki pause.

Those are mostly speculative reasons for or against Sasaki signing with the Dodgers. As mentioned, it’s unknown how or why he will make his decision and the Dodgers are still considered the favorites by many in the baseball world. That includes MLBTR readers, as today’s poll about his landing spot has the Dodgers well ahead of the Padres and Blue Jays.

Subjectively, the Dodgers need Sasaki less than the other two finalists. The Padres have a significant budget crunch and haven’t made any moves of significance this winter, perhaps waiting to see if they can land Sasaki before deciding next steps. The Jays are coming off a disappointing season, have several key players nearing free agency and have seemingly been the runner-up on every notable free agent in recent years. The Dodgers, as mentioned, have a lot of good things going for them as a franchise.

The big decision will be known relatively soon, one way or another. Sasaki has to sign by the end of his posting window, which closes on January 23. He could officially sign as soon as January 15, when the new international signing period opens. It’s also possible that news of his decision will be reported before he actually puts pen to paper, so the bomb could potentially drop at any time.

As a Texas Rangers fan, it’s disappointing to see we’re out on Roki Sasaki. However, from a player’s perspective, why would he want to play for teams like Toronto or San Diego when his best opportunity to win long-term and become the premier starting pitcher from Japan would be with the Los Angeles Dodgers? I understand this idea might not be popular, but isn’t the bottom line that players play to win? Additionally, Texas could pursue him in 6 years once we have our new stock exchange and all the New York businesses relocating to Dallas. 🙂 Roki, enjoy your stay in SO CAL, we will see you in Texas as a Ranger with no State Taxes in 2031!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        To anybody,

How long would the team he signs with have to wait to offer him an extension to pay him market value? Would they be a circumventing of the rules? Can a team sign him for $10 mil and then offer him an extension next season?

They would probably need to wait until his arbitration years, which is after 3 years. At that point, they could justify a long term extension.

According to sportswriters on it from Japan, the agreement with the NPB is that players in this situation have to wait until they reach arbitration. I saw it on Yahoo Sports Japan, but can’t find the link for the life of me. Maybe someone else can track it down.

If the Padres don’t sign him this could potentially be one of the worst offseasons in Padres history.

To put all your eggs in the Sasaki basket while making ZERO ACQUISITIONS is abysmal.

A Dodger loving Padres ownership group has been refusing to spend money on the Padres.

Do not tell me that the Seidler Bros don’t have a soft spot for the Dodgers.

This offseason is a strong indicator that the Padres own Seidler Bros run ownership is almost pulling for the Dodgers by the way they have handcuffed Preller financially.

Missing out on Sasaki could set this franchise back significantly.

They have a new controller and are reassessing their direction. You cant sign 2-3 FAs every year.
I think we sign Sasaki. And we see the emergence of Devries this season.
Merrill is our best player and he is home grown. Its time to see Devries. And soon enough Salas

towinagain, I don’t get it, man. The Padres went on a several off-season long bender, and have significant money on the books already. SD is not LA or NY. Be thankful the Padres are among big spending teams.

Plenty of our teams are cheap. San Diego isn’t one of them.

          towinagain,

Scroll down and you will see your answer. It is that they don’t need to sign them.

Padres are in an enviable position in that they only need a catcher and some bench pieces.

It would be nice for them to get a LF and I am sure they are hoping to get Profar back. It would be nice to get another starting pitcher and they are pushing hard for Sasaki and are a finalist.

But neither of those are needs. They are bonuses. They have decent to good options if neither happens.

Take a look at the Angels if you want to see a team that has huge needs they are not filling. Don’t get me wrong, I think Minasian has done a good job improving the club from a 99 loss team to maybe a 89-90 loss team, but there are holes big enough to drive a truck through on this team.

With Trout confirmed for LF, Moniak is expected to be our starting CF. Rengifo our starting 2B. Kevin Newman our starting SS until Neto returns from injury. Rendon our starting 3B with Newman his likely replacement when he goes down for the season in April or May. Our starting rotation includes two guys that had an ERA 5.92 or higher last season. Three guys in our pen had an ERA of 5.82 or higher. You getting the picture? Those are holes that need to be filled.

The Padres? Not so much. Just catcher.

When did that happen Vegas? On their website it still says Eric Kutsenda and I have not seen an announcement from MLB to that effect.

After reading that lawsuit from your owner’s widow, I don’t think MLB will get involved in that mess until after the lawsuit is ruled on by the probate judge.

you haven’t been a padres fan long. One of their worser offseason when they traded Ozzie Smith in 1981. Or 1980 when they let Dave Winfield walk because they didn’t want to pay these players their value. It mostly built the st Louis cardinals teams of the 1980s.

          Worser?

I am not a Padres fan, but even I know that the Padres were considered the winner of that trade at the time.

Ozzie was a 26 year old, glove only SS coming off a season where he hit .222 with an OBP under .300. He had hit .231 in the 1st four seasons of his career up to that point with 1 HR.

Templeton was a year younger, a two time All Star, considered an average defensive shortstop, and had hit .305 to that point in his career.

You really need to take a deep breath and try to face reality. If he chooses the Dodgers it has nothing to do with money since every team can offer him essentially the same amount. Why should he not choose an organization focused on winning not just lying to the public so they can put more money in the pockets of billionaires? How do you get through each day?

All Dodgers international signings have signed with other teams or are doing try -outs for them right now.

Eric at Fangraphs has it up. Padres and Blue Jays no such issue. They are up on the board making big million dollar signings while the Dodgers have nothing.

That was a great article by Will Sammon.

“The Padres informed some players who were expected to be part of their upcoming signing class that they were free to seek other deals, league sources said. The Dodgers have told players to consider signing as part of next year’s class if the team lands Sasaki and can’t acquire enough international bonus pool money via trade to honor their handshake agreements, league sources said. (The sources said the Padres have had similar conversations with prospects about potentially waiting until 2026.)”

I also found it very interesting that Darell Morel, the Dodgers commit that is reportedly signing with the Pirates now, is getting twice as much money from the Pirates. His change of heart may have had far more to do with money than with the Dodgers telling prospects they were going for Sasaki first then circling back around to these kids.

Well since it seemed like both teams were telling their international prospects to wait or look elsewhere that perhaps they’d come to a Solomonic solution for Sasaki.

No good reason? How about two? First, Japan and Korea operate professional baseball leagues and thus have their own drafting systems. Players from these countries will never, ever be available to an international draft, even assuming one can be created for MLB. Second, the posting rules were created by joint agreement between the leagues (MLB, NPB and KBO). So the rules are what they are because the leagues want them to be that way. Barking at the moon would have more impact than complaining about this system. So do let us know how that works out for you.

@BITA – Yankee fan here. Japanese players should be part of the draft if they get posted.

No need for international draft for Dominican, Venezuela, Curaçao, Bermuda and the rest of the international amateur countries. Those players don’t have luxury of having played professionally and/or having endorsements.

What I’d like to see is every team gets the same amount of international bonus pool money. And no taking amateur picks and international money away from teams for signing free agents. Give the same compensation pick (post first round) to everyone that loses a QO player (but don’t dock the signing team).

How is that going to work? The posting system exists for no other reason than to compensate the team posting the player. They get nothing if the posted player simply enters the MLB draft. Which, btw, happens in June — right in the middle of the MLB, NPB and KBO seasons. Try again.

Fernando, I usually agree with the majority of your insightful posts… buuuuut not this one. Let’s dive in!

“No need for international draft for Dominican, Venezuela, Curaçao, Bermuda and the rest of the international amateur countries.”

How do these players get distributed then? One BIG amateur draft at the ASB? How would non-posted KBO and NPB players be selected? The following season’s draft? The timing is off. These different obtaining avenues exist for particular and pertinent reasons.

“What I’d like to see is every team gets the same amount of international bonus pool money. ”

          They do.

“And no taking amateur picks and international money away from teams for signing free agents.”

Where to start here? Are we just dissolving all semblance of parity now? Your plan empowers the largest markets to run roughshod over the have-nots. Not cool at all, and I do mean that as an impartial fan of MLB first, Padre fan second. I’m not only a (ex)-player, but a student of the game that I love.

“And no taking amateur picks and international money away from teams for signing free agents.”

Well, therein lies the rub. Refer to my previous point of empowering the big dogs needlessly.

@BlueSkies – The Japanese team would be compensated based on the player’s bonus. Right now that’s how under 25 year olds get compensated.

They can go back to the previous posting system with blind bids for 25 year olds or older. Japanese teams would still get their money. Unless player already was a free agent in Japan.

@Blue Skies – -And why should we care what the Japanese team gets?

We have a current compensation system that sees the Yankees lose Soto on a 765M deal and only get a measly fourth round pick. Meanwhile they sign Fried for 218M (or about 30% of what Soto got) and lose two picks (2nd and 5th highest plus 1M in bonus pool money). How about they work on fixing that imbalance first before worrying about NPB compensation.

Completely unworkable. Signing bonuses are seldom more than a couple million. Yamamoto’s team in Japan got $50M for his posting. So basically your idea means no postings because no Japanese team will give up their players for nothing. Remember, this is their system too. And it’s ironic to be making this suggestion over Sasaki’s posting, one that any team can afford due to his “amateur” status.

@Gwynning – Appreciate the kind words.

For the international countries mentioned just keep the current international signing period intact. Every team has the same chance to sign the players depending on how much bonus pool money they have.

If you’re already giving losing team a pick, then also taking two picks and then also taking international money (that was already a smaller bonus pool) that means paying multiple times for signing one player.

All teams don’t have the same international bonus pool money. The smaller markets, revenue sharing recipients get a larger international bonus pool. I’d like to every team get the same amount, so every team has the same resources to get international players. This gives big market teams a chance to get some elite talent that they can’t get in the amateur draft.

As for the draft picks for QO free agents, the league can still give those teams losing a player a draft pick. Lose a player get a pick. But current QO system both gives a pick to the team losing the player while also taking 1-2 picks from signing team. Don’t see need to take away picks when you already compensated the losing team.

It’s quite possible that we may see an announcement on Sasaki‘s final decision later today or early tomorrow morning. Tomorrow is the day that international free agents sign, and it would be doing everybody a favor if all teams knew by tomorrow whether they had to relinquish their commitments or move ahead and sign the players that they have reached agreement with.

If Wolfe has any appreciation for this process, I would think he would want to do that.

The players are clearly interested at some level in Toronto. Its not just a figment of Atkin’s imagination.

And its hard to criticize him for trying, when some other GM’s don’t.

I do wonder if someone in the media has it out for him. I expect there are a bunch of teams in on most players, but the media seems to focus on the Jays trying and failing.

I don’t care who he signs with. He isn’t signing with my Tigers and never granted them an in-person meeting despite being an up-and-coming club with an excellent pitcher development program. The rich will get richer as always.

Yeah this is pretty dumb at this point. It’s pretty clear the “handshake deal” they claim was never a thing, is most definitely a thing. MLB has a big time Dodgers problem on their hands, and I suspect they will be losing alot of viewers they had to work so hard to get back. Watch how far the tv ratings drop this year, it’s going to be telling. But hey, you live with what you allow, and right now Dodgers arent doing anything “wrong”.

I mean yeah that’s part of it too, but now you also have one of the richest teams in baseball deferring over a BILLION dollars in contracts? The supposed best player in the game is making 2 million a year. That is absolutely baffling. I mean that’s Luxury Tax Avoiding in plain daylight, but MLB would rather turn a blind eye and not care, because it’s LA. The game is more fun when everyone has a chance, and right now the MLB has taken the way of the NBA 3-4 teams that can actually win it all, 5-6 teams that will make the playoffs regularly, and the rest of the league that has basically no chance. It’s bad, and this is just making it worse and worse.

Which part of my comment was inaccurate?

The Dodgers being one of the richest teams in baseball? That’s 100% true.

The Dodgers deferring over a billion dolalrs in contracts? That’s true too.

Ohtani making a $2m salary this year? That’s true as well.

So where exactly was I “inaccurate” as you say?

Based on your handle, I’d guess your a homer Dodgers fan who can’t handle anyone speaking a negative word about “your team”, which makes you probably the WORST person to have amy type of converatio, with regarding these matters as you wont listen to reason or truth.

Total nonsense. Everything you said is provably wrong, and has been shown to be wrong a thousand times. You are making a worthless contribution by bringing this up yet again and expecting it to start some sort of “dialog.”

And FWIW, I’ve argued many times on these boards that if I was the king of baseball, I’d divide the sport’s revenue in 30 equal shares and reward teams for success, instead of rewarding failure, as is done now. As a lifelong baseball fan this is what I’d like to see but when make this proposal here I get approximately zero agreement. So have fun with that.

Padres INCREASE payroll so of course, they have a budget crunch. The CEO and Chairman say they are going to end up in 2025 somewhere between 2023 and 2024. The GM says he has the payroll flexibility to add any player or players he feels are a fit. The Padres have no significant holes, so when they don’t make huge additions that verifies that they have a budget crunch? What is wrong with you?

    Needs?
LF – Padres have made an offer to Profar. If not they have a really good hitting prospect in Ornelas ready.
#3-#5 SP – Are at the top of the list for Sasaki. If they don’t sign him, the guys that are returning would have ranked top 10 last season. That is not a need that requires a significant addition.
C – Preller has made offers to several including Higgy and d’Arnaud only to be outbid and is one of the best at procuring backup catchers that become stars for that one year in a Padres uniform.

Patience grasshopper, IT IS JANUARY and Preller made moves last season that turned out to be huge last season after this point in the offseason including Profar and Cease.

Arraez was not traded for until May. Peralta and Solano were signed to minor league deals in April and May.

So exactly what ” moves of significance” were they supposed to make this offseason? Until you can answer that question, please stop with the garbage about cutting payroll Darragh and Nick.

I always counter the “They’re cutting payroll” idiots with the fact their payroll is increasing by about 40 million, so they gotta work with that. I’m not worried about LF or C, just maybe 1 more SP. I’d be fine with flipping Arraez for a young #3/4 pitcher somewhere.

For both of you and any other Padres fans that want to chime in. Was listening to Padres station while driving back to OC today and they were talking about Morejon and another reliever possibly stretching out to start. Do you know anything about that and what do you think?

They’ve mentioned it. They’ve had success in recent years with Lugo, Martinez, etc. I could see Hoeing getting stretched out too.

Morejon only pitched 70 innings last season, was very effective as a reliever, and most importantly stayed healthy. I would not want to mess with what is working.

If the Padres sign Sasaki and go to a 6 man rotation, he might fit in the rotation since he would probably not have to go more than 110-120 innings. With Preller, who knows. Maybe he begins the season in the rotation and moves to the pen to limit his innings? Maybe he is part of a piggyback?

While Hoeing was a swingman for the Marlins, much like Martinez was for the Padres, he was much more effective out of the pen. Another one of those don’t try to fix what is not broken.

I’d be with you on the conspiracy of this, but the fact that it was reported/mused by Rosenthal, with MLB Team Front Offices intel, a widely respected reporter and not some Joe Schmo on Fansided, makes it all the more plausible, if not likely. When he becomes a Dodger, MLB will have a spin job of epic proportions to deal with, just like the year Pete Rose dies, the biggest player in the game gets caught up in a betting scandal…. I mean…. it all screams cover up, and Manfred is at the head of it all. It’s sad to see.

I wonder how they are going to circumvent all the barriers MLB has put into place over the years. This should be real interesting.

He isn’t going to make a decision tomorrow but rather wait until closer to the 23rd of January but I do know he has been looking around Coronado.
Here is the Bonus Pool money for each team.

$7,555,500:Athletics, Brewers, Mariners, Marlins, Rays, Reds, Tigers, Twins

$6,908,600:Diamondbacks, Guardians, Orioles, Pirates, Rockies, Royals

$6,261,600:Angels, Blue Jays, Braves, Cubs, Mets, Nationals, Padres, Phillies, Rangers, Red Sox, White Sox, Yankees

    $5,646,200:Astros, Cardinals

    $5,146,200: Dodgers, Giants

Blue Jays and Padres have 1.1 million more than the Dodgers have to sign Sasaki and there are plenty of teams that have more but Sasaki has no desire to play for them. Some fans are going to be very happy and some will be bummed and some don’t really care.. Regardless of who he signs with I know I’ll be at Spring Training for a week in March and then Opening Day…It’s almost Baseball season 🙂

If Sasaki does sign with the Dodgers then MLB should instrument a system limiting the signings of international players to teams below top 10 finishes in the previous season, then limit their control years to 3 years, Free agency after 3 years. Balances things.

Sasaki is considered an amateur by MLB’s rules, which require a player to be 25 years old with six professional seasons of experience to be considered a professional. That means he is subject to the international bonus pool system, under which each team gets about $5-8MM annually to spend on such players.

Just let every high-priced FA or international superstar go there, let them shove their money down everyone’s throat for another decade, and by then not a single fan outside of LA (depending how many still live there 10 years from now) will still watch this corrupt league. The NFL will be 20 games by that point anyway and will dominate the calendar, so it feels like a realistic dream.
