Triston Casas Discusses Trade Rumors

By Nick Deeds | January 11, 2025 at 8:47pm CDT

First baseman Triston Casas’s name has been the subject of plenty of trade rumors this winter, even as chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has roundly insisted that Casas is not being shopped. With the Red Sox apparently involved in the markets for both Alex Bregman and Nolan Arenado, however, it’s not hard to see how adding another bat to the infield could spell the end of Casas’s time in Boston.

For his part, the soon-to-be 25-year-old slugger isn’t letting the noise get to him. As noted by Christopher Smith of MassLive, Casas acknowledged the possibility that he could be dealt if the right offer were to come along, adding that for the right package it could be in the “best interest” of the organization to move him or any player. Casas added that he’s been assured by the organization that there’s no substance behind rumors that he’s on the trading block before making clear that the rumors swirling around him this winter don’t bother him.

“I love Boston,” Casas said, as relayed by Smith. “I love everything about it and they’ve welcomed me with open arms since my first first professional day. So it would be great to play here as long as possible. I love the fans and they welcome me generously all the time. So I would love to play the rest of my career here. But if it’s elsewhere, I just feel like March 28, no matter where it’s at, I’m going to be playing major league games. So just focus on that.”

While he adds that he tries not to let the trade rumors “get to his head,” he reiterated his love for Boston and desire to stay in the organization long-term. That affirmation comes nearly a year after reported extension talks between the two sides, though those discussions ultimately did not lead to a deal. It appears there’s been no recent discussions about an extension, either, as Casas told reporters (including Rob Bradford of WEEI) today while appearing at the club’s Fenway Fest event that the sides have not talked about an extension since last winter.

Even setting aside the trade rumors, it’s not necessarily a shock that Casas and the Red Sox haven’t talked extension in the aftermath of the 2024 campaign. After all, last year was a difficult one for Casas. He spent much of the season on the injured list due to torn cartilage in his ribcage and when healthy enough to take the field slashed just .241/.337/.462 while striking out at a concerning 31.7% clip.

That production was still good for a 119 wRC+ overall, but that’s a step back from the 130 he posted in 2023. After an injury-marred down season that exposed a potential red flag in the form of an increased strikeout rate, the Red Sox are surely hoping to gather more information about both Casas and their outlook around the diamond before committing to him long-term. Meanwhile, Casas surely is hoping to quell any doubts caused by 2024 with a full, healthy season before he signs a long-term deal.

Turning back to the possibility of the Red Sox pursuing Bregman or Arenado, the connection between those pursuits and the possibility of a Casas trade hinges on the possibility of installing either of those additions at third base, causing incumbent third baseman Rafael Devers to move to first base. Manager Alex Cora discussed the possibility of moving Devers off the hot corner at Fenway Fest today, as noted by Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic. According to Cora, the club has not yet discussed a change of positions with Devers and that they would discuss the possibility with him before they get to the point of adding a new third baseman to the lineup. That generally tracks with the comments made by Breslow last month, which indicated the club has no current plans to move Devers off third base.

1991 WS was the best I every witnessed, not a fan of either team involved, but just for the love of baseball. Only thing that tops it for me was 2004 ALCS (but that had a whole lot of personal fandom in it).

It’s always tough to tell who floated what, who said yes or no and why. We’ve also got outlets and agents that may try to create a market for their players that maybe really isn’t even there so they can leverage that elsewhere. It’s why the hot stove season is fun. Speculation and fantasy GM’ing in the comments section is enjoyable. In this instance, I’ve seen reports that the M”s were looking for a RH bat at one of the corners, 2 lefties doesn’t really fit that but the only people that know aren’t here. Or are they?

Uncle – The Red Sox have a history of overpaying in talent to rid themselves of bad contracts.

They gave up way too much talent to get rid of Crawford, and they gave up way too much talent to get rid of Price.

The Sox are down on Casas right now, that played a part in wanting to attach him to Yoshida.

@FPG, that mind set was true thru the DD years, since then it is all about payroll structure.
In reality Casas should be one of the most secure players on the team… a big bat, semi decent glove (much better gloves than Devers), only 25, making league min, under team control for years, with a lot of upside…BUT…
He said no to the extension and they will never take the PR hit by admitting that Fat Panda Jr should have moved to DH 2 years ago.
This new business model will move the error machine known as Devers to 1st and keep Yoshi long before keeping Casas.
Smart move would be to just release Yoshi, move Devers to DH, keep Casas, sign/trade for a 3rd.
Mark my words, bro… that will NOT happen. Common sense is illegal Fenway nowadays

          Hyde – Neither.

Did you just make an assumption instead of first asking me to explain further? Yes, yes you did.

One thing you need to realize, many times I comment about subjects long before they are written about here and elsewhere. For instance Devers being a no-show at FSG Fest yesterday was something I wrote about here THE DAY BEFORE Cotillo “broke” the news.

But I’m not familiar with your handle, you may be new here, so I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt by explaining.

it has been my position for YEARS that Devers should be tried out at first base before going straight to DH …. long before it was ever mentioned in an article here. I repeatedly compared the Devers situation to Vladdy, who DID move from 3B to 1B because he sucked at 1B.

The reason I wrote 7 hours ago that there’s no replacement for Casas is because 1) Cora insists Devers is not moving and 2) Cora has refused to give Devers the opportunity to try out at 1B therefore I’m not yet convinced he can handle it. If Devers is deadset against moving, he likely won’t embrace the new position and therefore likely won’t play it very well.

Even when the manager of the DR team wanted Devers to play 1B in the last WBC, Cora refused to allow it. That’s how stubborn Cora is about Devers NOT playing first base.

My position has always been, TRY Devers out at first base and see if he takes to it. Unlike others, I don’t assume he will be a natural at it. Even with Casas being out for most of last season, Devers COULD have tried playing first base …. but Cora refused to allow it.

IMO the Red Sox COULD be a better team with Devers at first base and Casas as the DH. That would be my preference if the Sox do acquire someone to play third base.

          So there you go.

Jr. was only at 3B for part of his rookie season in 2019 and was bad so the Blue Jays moved him to 1B immediately in 2020. He has been one of the worst 1B on defense. That move has not helped the Blue Jays win games. Vlad is a DH.

Devers has been polluting the field around 3B since 2017. His pathetic attempts to play defense are obvious to all that have seen him play. His glove is so bad that only Bohm has surpassed him in futility at making plays at 3B and his range is so bad that only one player in all of baseball is worse at any position.

Base – The thing is, 3B is a much more important position than 1B.

If Vladdy is gonna suck on the field, it’s better that he suck at 1B instead of 3B.

Lord – I’m not aware of the contract offer ever being revealed, but Casas did state something to the effect of it not being worth enough to be considered or something like that. I’m not gonna search the quote again, but he definitely made it seem like it was a lowball offer …. which means it could have been offered just for show.

@LordD99, Casas said that he wanted to wait to think about extensions until he felt like he had proven himself and he is willing to bet on his future.
In other words, he isnt interested in selling out his arb years.
Sox front office took his long statement and filtered it down to 2 words… “Pay me!”
They will pay Yoshi 90 mil to sit on the bench while paying Devers 300 mil to produce errors, but will never pay Casas his due.
Sad state of today. I miss 2003 to 2013.

Do we know for sure that there was an actual extension offer? I got the feeling it was more a discussion that didn’t go anywhere because Casas wanted more time to showcase what he is worth. Due to injuries he has not had a chance to really wow anyone yet. You wonder if he would be willing to discuss an extension now. If they are adamant they are going to get rid of him, I am not sure why they would continue to insist they are not shopping him. I find it hard to believe they could not find a trade partner if they just wanted him gone.

Uncle – Yes I don’t assume things like that.

“Of course we have,” Casas told reporters when asked if the sides have talked extension yet. Casas went on to add that while he hopes to stay a member of the Red Sox “forever,” “nothing enticing” had been offered to him at this point. Casas declined to get into specifics when asked what sort of contract he would consider, though he noted his goal is a deal that would leave himself and his family “set for the rest of [his] life.”

Companies are paying big money for any content – online, podcasts etc. If it gets clicks and makes money they don’t really seem to care.

The reader has to do a lot of work to sort out what has merit – I’m sure there are unintentional mistakes and then there are the we don’t care mindset.

Was a 130 wRC+ in 2023. If he gets back to that level, and maintains last year’s defensive improvement, he could double his career WAR.

Of course the reason that is even a possibility is that he managed just 840 PA over his first two seasons. That’s 42 HR in 840 PA, or one every 20 times to the plate.

He just needs to stay healthy, get in some consistent PA, and he could have a big season. Meanwhile the rumors swirl, like something flushed down the toilet.

        Wait:
        The conversation is Casas’s 2024 wRC+ and whether thats a good wRC+ for a 1B.

But, sure you expect his 2023 bat to return, but not his 2023 glove, “if he gets back to that level” and he “needs to stay healthy”.

        Got it.

I’d like to see him stay. He is young, relatively inexpensive, and a good hitter.

Yoshida is older and really only a platoon DH. Pay some team to take him off our hands, move Devers to DH, and bring in a legitimate 3B.

Yes and no. I kind of remember them – in the early 2000’s I was a kid in middle school just falling in love with baseball and getting old enough to start knowing what was going on around the game. I’ve obviously learned plenty more of them the more I got into the game and its history over the years, but the memories that stand out to me most from those Oakland teams when I was that young were the pitching staff and Eric Chavez. And he didn’t fit the no-glove mold at all.

Baseball – Come on, you know his defensive ranking can be easily looked up for his ONE YEAR as an MLB outfielder …. right?

          fangraphs.com/leaders/major-league?lg=all&ind…

Yoshida ranked higher in DRS than Soto, De La Cruz, Profar and Schwarber.

Yoshida’s UZR ranked higher than Profar, Rosario, 10D and Schwarber.

Yoshida’s OAA ranked higher than Soto, 10D, Profar and Schwarber.

And that was his first year in America, first year in MLB and first year learning LF at Fenway. He also ran out of gas that year because he wasn’t conditioned yet for the much more grueling MLB schedule.

Fpg, of all the guys that played LF, only a handful were worse than Yoshida. Not a ringing endorsement. It means he was really bad.

He was not a rookie. He had years playing in Japan and he was bad there. Fact is he is terrible in the field. If he plays LF it will be to the detriment of the Red Sox. At this point we don’t even know if he will be able to throw after the surgery. As bad as his arm was, and it was 3rd percentile in 2023, its guaranteed to be worse coming off labrum surgery.

Running out of gas didn’t explain how bad he was all season. Stop trying to make excuses for him.

Real question, what is the liklihood that Devers could play a solid 2b? I mean, he’d have more time to react, but also he isn’t very fleet of foot for a middle infielder…

I hate the idea of trading 1 year of pre-arb + 3 years of arb Casas to pay Bregman or Arenado in their likely declining years, but also OK with signing/trading for one of them if it doesn’t involve trading Casas away. But that would mean that Yoshida needs to go, and every other team probably knows this and won’t even take him with the RS covering half of his remaining contract, despite him being a pretty good hitter (but also probably best suited to DH) – RS would need to probably pay down 75% of the contract to make it happen.

If Vlad was willing to sign an extended contract then 4 years of Casas for Vlad straight up would be a decent trade but it would have to come with an extension. The Red Sox control Casas for 4 more years at cheap control. Vlad for Casas and an extension for Vlad something in a 12 year 450 million. It has to come with an extension one year of Vlad isn’t worth 4 of Casas.

Bruin – I wouldn’t make that trade in a million years.

4 years team control of an established player who has proven he can be one of the best hitters in the game? And you want to trade that for a 1-year rental that will require almost half a billion to extend?

Typically you trade prospects for rentals, you don’t trade established players. Not sure why you are so down on Casas, but if he’s healthy and swinging as hard as he did before the rib injury then he’s easily a Top-5 hitter in MLB.

Vlad is a hell of a hitter I think if there really is more to Casas and they don’t think he’s a good fit personality wise then Vlad is someone who makes sense.

Oh What a Tangled Web We Weave.
Just keep Casas at 1B & Devers at 3B
Seems Casas had legitimate injury reasons for reduced 2024 results.
Their medical staff could give them a good assessment.

BOS has improved their pitching a great deal. There are always unforseen issues and more depth is always something to consider given the cost. (e.g. SEA pitchers)

No guarantees however you play it but just keep Casas and keep negotiating on an acceptable extension. If BOS wants to move Devers to 1B I think they need some time to transition him. More than just 1 spring training. He might not be much better at 1B than 3B. You can say we’ll just DH him but he’s not gonna be happy with that. I’m sure they would have talked about that before they signed him to the long term extension.
They had multiple motives to extend him including post Mookie Betts damage control.
In 2025 Devers could be 70% 3B/10%1B and 20% DH. If Yoshida stays they just have to have him start enough games in OF – and come out for defensive issues late.

All these Bregman, Arenado scenarios at 3B/2B and 3B/1B just seem like un manageable distractions.

If they could trade Yoshida right away I could see Arenado as 60% DH, 30 % 1B/3B. Arenado is kind of the new JD Martinez for the next 3 years.
Breslow would have to have many more conversations to pull that off.
    Probability 10%.
Trading Yoshida has to happen first. At a price SEA is OK with OR who else?

Yagotta, he is really that bad. He is one of the two worst defensive 3B in baseball. He has just about the worst range in baseball regardless of position. He just looks at balls go past without making any attempt that Bregman or Arenado would get to easily. So yes, he is that bad.

I don’t understand why people are so negative about Devers’ contract? Compare to Teoscar Hernandez, and (as measured by Fangraphs Offensive Runs above Average), Devers has been 40% more valuable.

Hernandez just got $22M/yr for his age 32-34 seasons, his decline years.. Devers’ contract covers his age 27-36 seasons, a total of five “prime” years, those three “decline” years, and then two more that have questionable value at the end of his career.

Those “prime” years are much more valuable than the “decline” years, and Devers has easily been the better hitter over his career. Through age 27, Hernandez had 76 career HR. Devers has 200. A total of 20 Off vs. 119 Off.

Add to that the continuing salary escalation supported by increasing league revenues, and Devers at $31M is going to look like a value in his age 32-34 seasons. It is a long deal because Devers is still quite young, but the economics work at DH — any defensive play they get out of him is a bonus.

@Wait, I really don’t think it is the contract that people are annoyed with, it is Dever’s refusal to move off 3rd. If he had agreed to move to DH 2 years ago people would be calling him Papi Jr with no thoughts paid to his contract.
The problem, as I see it, is that Devers isn’t team 1st, he is Devers first, Red Sox Nation is not big on the Face of the Franchise being selfish.
Schilling pitching hurt, Wakefield giving up a start in the playoffs, Papi taking a walk when a runner needed, Pedro coming out of the pen, Roberts being positive about being a speedster off the bench instead of being a starter in the outfield… I can go on and on about tram first Red Sox players. Devers will never make the list

Apparently, the only returns for Casas has been low-ball offers from other teams. Casas should be a featured, middle-of-the-lineup hitter for years. The buzz about his lack of finesse at 1st base is overblown, compare his stats to Alonso) and he will be every bit as good as Devers with the bat. Leave him at 1st.

On the defense part, who cares! It’s first base for God’s sake, nobody gives a flying crap how good a player is at first base or left field. Those are where you stick players who suck defensively because those two positions won’t hurt you that much.

This notion that you can’t win with a bad defensive player at any position is absurd ….. helloooo …. 2018 ……..remember?

The funny thing is us Red Sox fans complain and moan when prospects are hoarded and they complain and moan and cry when the POBO does make a trade. Breslow was tied up by ownership he knew he needed to improve pitching on this team but ownership clearly wasn’t willing to be competitive in signing a 30+ year old pitcher on a long term contact so Breslow did what he had to do. He traded prospects for his potential ace. It’s funny your damned if you do damned if you don’t as the POBO of Boston. Good job Breslow don’t listen to the whiners do the best you can to put a winning product on the field under the obvious constraints. The farm is still loaded the future is still bright.

Well they didn’t lose three of their top 5 prospects no matter what FALSE information you want to spout. The Red Sox still have three of the top 10 prospects according to 9 out of 10 prospect sources. Breslow traded Kyle Teel which is a big loss no question but he was put in a bad situation. He also traded a guy who might be elite but he’s coming off a serious injury and he’s never played one play in professional baseball so who knows you don’t know and I don’t know how handles professional pitching. The other two guys are minimal one likely utility guy and the other a likely reliever.

I’m here to make sure that your spouted bs from rotowire which is refuted by a lot of high end prospect publications. Hell if you want to read a quality fantasy baseball prospect evaluator then Dynasty Dugout which isn’t in the dark ages knows about advanced metrics that literally all professional teams use to evaluate and I mean all. Why do they do that when it comes to prospects because it’s a far better way than simply looking at the sports page. It’s time for your old mind to realize there’s a better way. It’s also why Chase Meidroth hasn’t sniffed a top 100 prospect ranking and will probably be exposed in the big leagues.

Bruin – Of course you are correct, Red Sox Nation is well aware that Breslow is handcuffed by Henry. Your anger at the Red Sox is well justified, if Henry would have simply opened up his dusty wallet and signed ANY of the top three free agent starting pitchers then they’d still have Teel instead of unnecessarily giving him away. Just another example of why these are very dark days for the Red Sox, so many bad decisions and most are based on money.

All we can do is pray for ownership’s soul and hope John Henry has a Scrooged-style epiphany.
