Cat_Herder mentioned that he was particularly impressed with Javy Baez’s defense.
His defense isn’t really all that surprising. He’s always been known as a good glove man, and we’ve seen a few shortstops go to the outfield and do well.
His offense is the real stunner. he’s been completely lost at the plate for 3 years now. If he can maintain anything close to this at the plate, it can only bode well for the Tigers chances heading into the fall.
A few years ago Peter Seidler (RIP) started a mission to win a chip, and ever since the pandemic season of ’20 the Pads have been in win mode. Yes, it hasn’t “worked out” yet, but hey, it didn’t work out for 29 other teams too! Dealing King or Cease in the Offseason was never happening- short of an absolute ransom headed to the West Coast then south on I-5. I have a strong suspicion that says one of the two arms will re-sign to stay in San Diego, and *I think it will be King.* Would love to retain Cease as well, but he’s going to get paid… big time.
Gwynning;
A long time to go before the end of the season. I expect Mr. Preller will be making some consequential moves before than.
After the season am sure the Padres will be replacing any pitchers that leave in FA. The Padres can replace them from their minor league talent. That’s a given. But they also can trade for some as well as go after FA’s in both America and other countries.
What can they offer FA pitchers? 1) A contending team with a one of the best managers in MLB – that has created an atmosphere in which the players are all pulling for one another. 2) One of MLB’s best pitching coaches – Ruben Niebla – that has already made many pitchers the Padres acquired much better in his time in San Diego.
3) Add in a wonderful clean city (not all that easy to find in America today) with the most consistent temperatures in the country along with an avid fanbase that (as you noted in another post) seems to be selling out each game. In short, San Diego and the Padres are one of the most attractive destinations for pitchers in MLB.
As I’m writing this I’m convinced that Padres FO people are – and have been – looking at potential pitching candidates and in time will be presenting them to Mr’s. Niebla, Schildt, Preller and others for their opinions. In short, the Padres will have a strong starting pitching staff going into 2025….as well as a fine bullpen.
Excellent insight Samuel! We’re (San Diegans, collectively… and yes I speak for everyone because everyone would say the same!) proud of our Pads and it’s nice to hear the real-deal perspective from somebody who pays as much attention to the League such as yourself. Cheers amigo
