Here are three things we’ll be watching around baseball as the calendar flips to May.
1. A potential IL stint for Justin Martinez:
Diamondbacks righty Justin Martinez had one of the most disappointing outings of his young career on Wednesday, giving up a home run and two walks before exiting the game. It was only the second time he had ever been removed mid-inning before recording an out. After the contest, D-backs manager Torey Lovullo told reporters, including Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic, that Martinez could go for testing on his right arm and that a stint on the injured list is a possibility.
It’s not yet clear where Martinez’s injury is located (if he is indeed injured at all), but his velocity has dropped substantially over his past few appearances. Early in the season, he was averaging triple digits with his sinker, but his velocity was down to the 97-98 mph range in two appearances over the weekend. Last night, his sinker was averaging just 93.5 mph, according to Baseball Savant. Earlier this week, Martinez told MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert that he wasn’t concerned, saying, “My arm feels good.” Yet, given his dramatic decline in velocity, it’s no wonder the Diamondbacks are worried about a potential injury. Presumably, the team will provide more updates if and when Martinez goes for imaging.
2. MRI for Jazz Chisholm Jr.
Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. exited early on Tuesday and sat out Wednesday’s series finale against the Orioles with what was originally deemed “right flank discomfort” and later clarified to be an oblique issue (per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com). Chisholm himself has downplayed the severity of the injury, but manager Aaron Boone isn’t quite as optimistic. The skipper told reporters (including Chris Kirschner of The Athletic): “[Chisholm is] in pretty good spirits. He just told me, ’I’m fine.’ I don’t know about that.” Boone suggested that despite Chisholm’s good spirits, an IL stint might be in order. According to Greg Joyce of the New York Post, Chisholm was still feeling sore on Wednesday, and an MRI today will help the Yankees determine next steps.
3. Opt-out opportunity for veterans on minor league deals:
The collective bargaining agreement between MLB and the MLBPA allows Article XX(B)-designated free agents (those with at least six years of service time who finished the previous campaign on a major league roster or injured list) three chances to opt out of minor league deals they may have signed, presuming they signed those deals at least ten days before Opening Day and they haven’t been added to their team’s 40-man roster. One of those opt-outs is today, May 1. Some notable veterans who could exercise their opt-outs include Eloy Jiménez (Rays) and Andrew Chafin (Tigers). Yasmani Grandal, who signed a minor league contract with the Red Sox after Opening Day, also reportedly has a May 1 opt-out in his deal.
Rumor has it Luis Mey is being brought up. Sounds like Alexis Diaz’s time is up. Figure it out, Alexis.
I can’t imagine the Sox holding onto Sabol.
Why not, he has options? Maybe one more start for him before Wong returns. If they bring Grandal up he’ll be dfa’d in a few days and they lose Sabol or someone else from the 40 man too.
Ford – Sabol has been kinda useless, .354 OPS and can’t throw anybody out.
They need to see what they’ve got with Grandal.
For Aaron “Tis but a scratch” Boone to say “He just told me, ‘I’m fine.’ I don’t know about that.” about Jazz, then amputation must be a likely option.
Is it true that the Yankees’ team doctor is Dr. Kevorkian? Asking for a friend…
When Moe, Larry and Curly aren’t available.
Anytime Jazz says he’s fine he spends at least a month on the IL. See you after the Allstar break.
Losing Puk and Martinez would be a huge blow to the Dbacks BP even with the return of Ginkel and expected return of Graveman. If Martinez is out for any length of time, I’m guessing Hazen will be scouring the market for a high leverage arm.
Helsley or Bednar? Either makes a certain amount of sense.
“[Chisholm is] in pretty good spirits. He just told me, ‘I’m fine.’ I don’t know about that.”
Dr. Boonedoggle, paging Dr. Boonedoggle.
He must have already had that Valium before the MRI.
Chisolm is an interesting player- he’s pretty loosey-goosey but the results speak for themselves, in a good way, for the most part… but that was an undeniably impactful injury. That wasn’t nothing. That’s gonna take a few days if not a few weeks to heal.
I think we’ll see Jazz back -for real, fully healed- in about 10 to 40 days, depending.
Chisholm has had 2 really good months in his career. The two immediately after being traded to the Yankees. Other than that he has either been injured or mediocre.
All the talent in the world, just not great results on the field. What is that saying from Bull Durham, “Million dollar arm and ten cent head”?
Yanks have some good prospects. They are getting some good pitching from their farm hands.
It will be interesting to see what the Yankees do at the trade deadline.
They really need Bellinger to find his stroke because he will be difficult to trade. Jazz on the otherhand could be packaged with prospects and shipped out of town, he has some trade value.
I disagree with trading Jazz. As bad as he has been with the bat, he remains league average with a good glove and is cheap for this year and the next and plays 2B/3B. Not sure what is going on with Belli but Grisham has held his own and some more.
BleacherCreature – the Yankees should probably bite the bullet and keep their pitching prospects, Id agree with that, but if they are looking to make a trade, and are ready to move on from Chisolm in favor of say Jorbit Vivas, I think they could move him.
Vivas doesnt have the power that Jazz has, but he could develop into a nice contact hitter.
Injury news you seem to be neglecting.

I think ignoring is more on point. Trout is injured so often that until he hits the IL they won’t report anything. Also, Deeds is sleeping by the time the night games on the West Coast are on. He may not know Trout was taken out of the game.
Wong is about ready to return from his IL stint and Narvaez has done a really nice job in his absence. It would make zero sense to add Grandal for what might be one or two days and then cut him when Wong is activated
The Pirates are so terrible at offense that a fan got overly excited about a hit and he fell to the field and is in critical condition.
saw the video. brutal fall. thoughts and prayers
