Guardians shortstop Gabriel Arias had to be carted off the field with a left ankle sprain during today’s 7-0 loss to the Cardinals. In the third inning, Arias jammed his left foot while sliding to try and gather a Masyn Winn grounder that went for a single, and Arias needed immediate treatment from the club’s training staff in the aftermath. Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt told MLB.com’s Tim Stebbins and other reporters that Arias will undergo an MRI tomorrow, though the good news is that initial x-rays were negative.
More will be known about Arias’ status tomorrow, but it seems like a placement on the 10-day injured list is inevitable prior to the Guardians’ next game on Tuesday. Now in his fourth MLB season, Arias began 2025 in a second base timeshare with Daniel Schneemann, and then assumed starting shortstop duties in mid-May. Arias has +3 Outs Above Average and +3 Defensive Runs Saved over 424 1/3 innings at short this year, helping the Guards with his glove even if he is hitting only .231/.293/.369 over 281 plate appearances. As Stebbins notes, former starting shortstop Brayan Rocchio will probably be called up from Triple-A to handle shortstop in Arias’ absence.
Here’s some more from around the AL Central…
- Speaking of MRIs, Kerry Carpenter will also receive a scan tomorrow after he had to make an early exit from the Tigers’ 3-0 win over the Twins tonight. Carpenter was removed from the game with right hamstring discomfort after hitting a triple in the fifth inning, though he told reporters (including MLive.com’s Evan Woodbery) that his hamstring started to act up earlier in the game when he was playing right field. Detroit doesn’t play Monday so Carpenter will have a built-in day off to heal up, though a trip to the injured list might be a wise idea since Carpenter has been dealing with hamstring soreness for much of the season. Carpenter has a 116 wRC+ and 16 home runs over 280 PA, but his .257/.285/.494 slash line reveals a severe dropoff in his on-base numbers, as Carpenter’s 2.5% walk rate is among the lowest in baseball.
- The White Sox activated Jonathan Cannon from the 15-day injured list today, and the right-hander allowed a run on three hits and three walks (with four strikeouts) over three innings of a start in Chicago’s 5-2 over the Giants today. Cannon missed just short of four weeks dealing with a lower back strain, and he now has a 4.59 ERA over 13 appearances (11 starts) and 66 2/3 innings this season. A third-round pick for the Sox in the 2022 draft, Cannon made his Major League in 2024 and figures to be part of Chicago’s rotation for the rest of the season as the rebuilding White Sox figure out their future rotation. Right-hander Wikelman Gonzalez was optioned to Triple-A in the corresponding move for Cannon’s activation.
Put Carpenter on the 10 day and let him sit until after the All Star game. 2 1/2 weeks to heal. Hopefully that will be enough.
Call up Malloy…..
Probably, as long as they are willing to give Vierling some looks at 3B plus maybe some OF. Perez can fill in capably in RF. Malloy can play some RF plus DH occasionally.
J-Hen seems like logical choice. He generally gives you good ABs, has some pop and has been hitting at AAA: .321 /.491 /.444 / .935.
I’d leave Jace & Sweeney on the farm for a while. They need regular ABs.
With Vierling and Jones on the roster, Baddoo is more likely as he’s LH.
Baddoo is not on the 40 man roster and he should been just released instead of offering him a contract. There are better choices already on the 40 man roster.
You could tell that Kerry was having issues for quite a while now. Nothing wrong with his bat but his running seemed a little stressed. Might have to rest for a while and bring up Brewer to take his place.
Rocchio seems like the obvious move but I wonder if they will slide schneeman to short and put angel at second then call up Kayfus or Delauter for the outfield? They need offense and Rocchio can’t hit his way out of a wet paper bag.
Rocchio is at least as good offensively as Martinez.
Rocchio at short. Brito should replace Martinez on the roster. Schneemann can add CF to his 2B work. Bring up either Kayfus or Delauter to play right.
This is the worst offensive team Cleveland has had since at least 1991, and the defense…esp in CF and RF…is pretty bad, so all these changes can’t make things worse.
Only the White Sox have fewer hits this year than CLE. Also bottom 10 in runs, HRs, team BA, etc. Guardians scored more than 4 runs in a game just twice in June. Aside from Kwan and Ramirez this lineup is horrific. The fact that they’re still hanging around .500 is a HUGE credit to the pitching staff and Carl Willis.
I don’t know. I think this offense is very offensive Rocchio will be at short. Upgrade as a fielder from Arias and last year was a better hitter. Won’t mind an extended dl stay for Arias. Kayfus has had very limited time in the outfield. He’s a first baseman so unless Santana is dealt he likely stays put. DeLauter is just coming back from injuries don’t think a sub .500 team will risk bringing him up now
All true to a point, but…
The RFs that Cleveland is running out right now all are butchers in the field, so Kayfus could hardly be much worse.
I dont understand how it is more dangerous to play the field in Cleveland than in Columbus, so the argument that Delauter is more at risk in Cleveland doesn’t wash.
One of the two should be starting tomorrow night for the Guardians.
Cannon pitched well yesterday, bullpen also had a good night. White Sox have a lot to offer a team or two in potential trades.
It’s going to be interesting to see who they ship out.
Carpenter and Max Anderson for Seth Lugo.
Skub, Flaherty, Mize, Olsen. Somebody will go down for the first or third time between now and the playoffs. We need someone who could not only solidify the rotation but give us a answer when the next injury occurs
Sean Burke is a player to consider, will cost you though, as he is in pre-arb.
Max Clark would probably get it done.
I hope they keep Max and Kevin. Especially when it comes to any rental players out there.
We know Harris is going to make a move(s). He said it several weeks ago. Just gotta hope we obviously get someone who can help our club but also not give away Brisceno and co.
Lmfao
No. Tigers won’t be giving up core pieces.
We got Wenceel, Veirling, Ibanez. Love Kerry but he’s only gonna get abs vs righties. He’s expendable. But hey, if KC (a team in desperate need of power) would do it for only prospects, so be it.
Ibanez was sent to the minors over a month ago
and he hasn’t hit there either
He can be called up. Malloy too.
Ibanez is probably next INF up, but as DR said, he hasn’t hit down there either.
Malloy has, and I’d rather his bat in the mix. The INF is pretty set anyway w/McKinstry & Vierling adding depth.
75% of pitchers are right handed and Kerry has a .875 career OPS against them. He’s probably one of the few “power” hitters the Tigers have. You are underrating his value on the roster.
I respect his power, but in terms of needs and the post season, I’d rather have a durable SP like Lugo. Again, if Royals would only require prospects, even better. Kerry is streaky. Kerry is injury prone ( not just today). He isn’t in the line up every day. He doesn’t walk. If any team requires one of our 26 man of value, I’d feel most comfortable letting him go
If Red Sox DFA Buelher and eat that contract, could Fetters fix him? The only reason I’m entertaining the thought is because of his post season history… I’m assuming the Sox would just move him to the pen but he’s quoted as saying “I’m a SP” so Im not sure they want another round of drama. Thoughts?
Funny how baseball doesn’t trade draft picks.
