The Tigers are going to select left-hander Dietrich Enns to the roster to start Thursday’s game, as first reported by @juiceyballl. The southpaw will have to be added to the 40-man and active rosters beforehand.
Enns, 34, signed a minor league deal with the Tigers in the offseason. He has since made 14 Triple-A starts, logging 62 1/3 innings with 2.89 earned runs allowed per nine. He has struck out 26.7% of batters faced while limiting walks to a 5.6% clip and getting grounders on 41.5% of balls in play.
That strong performance will get Enns back to the majors, which has been a long and winding road. He previously made two appearances with the 2017 Twins and then another nine with the 2021 Rays. That stint with Tampa was pretty decent, as he had a 2.82 ERA, 28.4% strikeout rate and 6.8% walk rate in 22 1/3 innings.
Despite those solid numbers, he may not have felt great about his job security going into 2022, as he was out of options. He decided to head overseas and signed with the Seibu Lions in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball. He had a strong performance that year, tossing 122 1/3 innings with a 2.94 ERA. He stuck with the Lions for 2022 but his results backed up, posting a 5.17 ERA over 12 starts. He then headed to Korea for the 2024 season, signing with the LG Twins. He made 30 starts for that club last year with a 4.19 ERA.
In the past month-plus, the Tigers have lost Reese Olson and Jackson Jobe to the injured list, blowing two holes in their rotation. Olson has been battling finger inflammation while Jobe required Tommy John surgery. In recent weeks, they have had a rotation core of Tarik Skubal, Jack Flaherty, Casey Mize and Sawyer Gipson-Long, with Keider Montero also pitching in a sort of bulk role.
Montero was optioned to the minors recently, so Enns will step in for him. It’s unclear if Enns will get to make more than one start, however, as Olson is going to be back soon. Per Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic, he’s making another rehab start tomorrow and the club hopes he can return after that. Perhaps that means this will just be a spot start for Enns, though Gipson-Long also has options and could be bumped for Olson’s return instead. As mentioned, Enns is out of options. If the Tigers plan to bump him off the roster after his outing, he’ll effectively need to be designated for assignment.

Hope he can get a real run in the Majors. He’s a good pitcher and deserves a real shot.
I’m guessing that both parents had guns held to their heads when they named him “Dietrich”.
I might not choose it, but it’s probably more interesting than whatever some anonymous schmuck is named who chooses to dump on a guy who has had the perseverance to keep pushing through years of minor leagues and foreign leagues to get another shot at pitching in the bigs.
Don’t get your panties in a bunch, Carl. I know it’s tough for insecure people like you, but other people’s opinions are allowed too.
Talking crap about someone’s name just shows how desperate someone is for people to show them attention. Congrats, mlb fan, we read your post, hope that fills some weird hole in your psyche.
Even if “mlb fan” might be the dumbest and least creative name I’ve ever seen on a comment board.
Aw crap now I’ve stooped to your basement level
Or one of his grandparents was German and named Dietrich? As opposed to names like Octatarvarius or Anfernees-Farquarion
Could be a family name. Of all the baseball things to complain about.,
Now there’s a blast from the past…
Yes Tigers need a lights out closer. Yes Tigers need a 3B. Why is nobody talking about SP? Love my team win or lose. And we are winning. And it is awesome.BUT- this team will get smoked in the playoffs if we don’t upgrade significantly.
We need a dependable #3 or 4. No injury history. Right now we have Skub, Flaherty (struggling), Mize (injury prone) and ? and ?. Olsen is also injury prone. We cannot do what we did last year in the playoffs and only have Skubs.
The bullpen games worked last year in the second half. Itās not working this season so another starter or two would be nice. Bullpen has really struggled lately.
So who are the 3 starters starting in the playoffs?
Skub, Flaherty, Mize?
If one gets bombed or hurt, Olsen, SGL, Montero?
It’s just not encouraging.
If the office tries to improve the club and we still can’t win a WS, at least it wasn’t for a lack of effort. But if you don’t try to make your club better or just bet and hope on what you already have and it fails, there’s not much room for excuse.
Oh and Montero
@t0bIe1CaN0bI:
As of this moment, I agree with you, that starting pitching is the most glaring need. Jack Flaherty cannot be relied on right now, his fastball is getting lit up, and his normally fantastic breaking stuff is shaky. I think we have only two reliable starters right now: Skubal and Mize. Now, if Olson comes back right as rain, then we’re looking much better, and that is our top three for the playoffs, with JF, KM, and SGL as depth options.
Bullpen has looked shaky recently, we definitely need a relief arm or two. I predict that, despite recent ownership stinginess, they will not be afraid to spend at this trade deadline, and that they will get one starter, one or two relievers, and at least one bat.
The bullpen game can burn out the staff pretty quickly. You have to have pitchers who can go 4-5 inning minimum.
Before and after the deadline you’ve got to fix most of your problems in house. And I get it. But our owner does not like to spend. I don’t want us to continuously bring these kids up from the minors with 5.00 eras and hope they can carry us in the playoffs. We caught lightning in a bottle last year. It’s not sustainable. With this deadline we have an opportunity to get better.
Who had a 5 era?
Will Vest has done a really nice job as closer. I think the Tigers need to add a big bat more than anything.
Hurter, Hanifee, Breiske, and that lefty who was awesome in 20 innings.
And that didn’t mention Jung or Workman as depth.
I agree. But I think getting Flaherty on track is more important. Waiting for Cobb and possibly Urquidy as well. Itās not that they donāt need another one after losing Jobe, itās just that they can afford to wait until deadline day with SP whereas a bat and a strikeout reliever would be welcomed right now.
2017, 2021, 2025. Every 4 years, he sees action in the Majors.
His nickname could be February 29th. only see him once every 4 years
I eagerly await his return in 2029
Iāve always wanted for him to be traded for John Meansā¦. think about itā¦
Monkey – You beat me to it, glad I saw your post first!
Would love to see a package for Suarez and Gallen/Kelly, and then a separate deal for Chapman or maybe Bautista.
I agree. I agree on those specific players. But even if those other teams are selling, at what cost for Det? The farm would take a significant hit.
Itās going to cost them. But honestly, do we really want to just hoard prospects? Baltimore is trying that. They didnāt invest last year when they had a legit shot. It might cost Max Anderson, Jaden Hamm, and a pick or two. But Skubal isnāt gonna be here forever. Do we really want to bank on Baez, McKinstry, Mize, Torkelson all clicking like this next season? Try now.
I’m ok with trading high ranked prospects for MLB players. Just not rentals.
Wouldnāt mind this either. Probably includes something like Max Anderson and Lee
I wonder if Boston would consider a Chapman for Jace Jung swap fair. And I think Max Anderson, Jaden Hamm, and a pick would do it for Arizona. Or maybe swap Anderson for one of Briceno/Liranzo.
No way we trade Briceno/Liranzo for rentals. Hamm and Melton are the top starting prospects in the upper minors, so would be hard to trade them unless it was a great deal. They could easily trade one of Anderson/Lee/ Jung and be fine though. Some good relief prospects in upper minors too that might work for a rental. It will be interesting to see what Harris does. You hate to trade prospects but you have to trade something to get something.
If Arizona sells, theyāll have lots of suitors. Gotta give up something to win them over.
Thatās true, but I donāt feel like either are difference makers. Gallen has been horrible this yr, maybe our pitching couch can fix him. Suarez isnāt the type of player Harris likes, though his RH power would be nice. Briceno is special, I wouldnāt trade him. Liranzo is fine since we have Dingler/Rodgers but I still wouldnāt trade him unless we are getting someone thatās more of a difference maker. Sale would have been worth it if he was still healthy. Liranzo/Hamm/ and Lee for sale would have hurt but would have been worth it for 1 1/2 yrs of a healthy Sale. š¤·āāļø
I agree. Atlantas being annoyingly stubborn thinking they can get back in the race. Thereās just not a ton on the market right now. Even rentals are gonna cost more this year.
I bet Rojas is available for the speedy platoon guy you wish for
Phil – Better off with Hamilton.
David, not Billy.
Sliding Billy Hamilton would be perfect but heās been dead for 85 years
Why do they need a speedy guy?
They are top 5 in the mlb in going 1-3 and 1-home. Not sure where youāre seeing the need for a speedster. Iād rather get a guy that can hit and play 3B š¤·
They are the best base running team in MLB. Easily. Stolen bases arenāt everything. Taking extra bases from 1st to 3rd, 2nd to home, stretching singles into doubles is what they do best. Parker hasnāt been around too much of the season, he should start to steal more once he starts getting on base more. Why give a valuable roster spot to someone who can run but canāt hit?
Should we take a flier out on Candelerio and give him a 30 day trial before the deadline?
@ t0bIe1CaN0bI
Absolutely no reason not to, he would be basically free, and the in-house third base options are fine⦠then we would not have to spend the trade deadline capital on third base, we could focus on pitching…
Candelario was cut because of a $1MM disagreement over salary with Harris. I don’t think he wants to come back.
You sure that wasn’t Avila?
I hope they don’t bring Enns up for one start and then DFA him. Give him a chance to remain with the team until he proves he can pitch or not.
Hope Enns has a nice outing. I’ve been following his minor league journey in Toledo. I’m going to guess, unless he explodes on the mound, the Tigers are not going to want to lose him.
Someone else will have to be dropped from the 40 man.
If you’re on the 60 day IL can you be dropped from the 40-man and still be retained? Can they do that to Jobe?
You’re removed from the 40-man roster once you’ve been placed on the 60-day IL.
Who is Skubs going to hit tonight? Severino beaned McKinstry in the back in the 3rd inning. Zack didn’t look pleased.
No one. I expect an A is going to get HBP sometime this weekend, though.
I normally support the beanball.
But the A’s?
Why bother?
Just old-school thinking.. The pitch seemed deliberate to me – and Zach. Just got the feeling there’s going to be payback at some point.
Well, Atlanta isn’t trading Sale.
And IF they did, it would be totally uncool to pick up the option.
Shows a complete lack of respect for the man.
