Angels Outright Connor Brogdon

By Mark Polishuk | August 19, 2025 at 7:16pm CDT

August 19: Brogdon cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Salt Lake, according to the MLB.com transaction log. It’s not clear if he’ll accept the assignment or test free agency.

August 17: The Angels announced this afternoon that they’ve designated right-hander Connor Brogdon for assignment.  Righty Jose Fermin was called up from Triple-A in the corresponding roster move.

Los Angeles signed Brogdon to an offseason minors deal that was selected to the active roster in early May, and the reliever has posted a 5.30 ERA, 10.1% walk rate, and 20.9% strikeout rate across 37 1/3 bullpen innings.  That low strikeout rate came despite some solid chase and whiff rates, and Brogdon recaptured his past fastball velocity by averaging 95.5mph on his heater.  Unfortunately, opposing batters made lots of hard and heavy contact against Brogdon, as he allowed seven home runs during his 37 1/3 frames.

Since Brogdon is out of minor league options, the Angels had to designate him for assignment to remove him from the active roster.  It is possible another team in need of bullpen help could make a claim given how reinforcements are harder to find post-trade deadline, but Brogdon’s lack of production might not entice many teams.  Since he has been outrighted before in his career, Brogdon can choose free agency if he clears waivers and is outrighted off the Angels’ 40-man roster.

Considering how Brogdon was plagued by plantar fasciitis in 2024, getting back to good health at least represents one silver lining to his 2025 season.  The right-hander posted good numbers in Philadelphia’s bullpen in 2021-22 before running into some struggles in 2023, and he pitched in only four Major League games last year (three with the Phillies, one with the Dodgers).

Thought he was the second coming of Ryan Madson when he first came up. He fragmented.

He got off to a bad start, then had a 10 game stretch where he was pretty good, followed by a 10 game stretch in which he was awful.

          This was about the bullpen.

          As far as Schanuel’s, I love getting a sub 400 firstbaseman…what a grab!!!!

Neto. Good fantasy league player, but I prefer my shortstop not to rank 26th out of 30 when playing defense.

Let me guess. Angels will resign him to a MiLB deal.

He gives up too many home runs, but I’d certainly take him over Jordan Romano. Almost every day, someone get s released who is pitching better than Jordan Romano.

At this point, the water ice vendor is a better option than Romano. He stinks worse than the cheese he shares a name with. I’d take Brogdan, Pressly or anyone other than Romano.

His ERA when he gives up a home run is over 35.1 when he doesn’t it is 1.35. I never liked him in Toronto. Something with him is off.

Every pitcher misses their location outside the zone, but when Romano misses, he’s missing with a straight pitch right down the middle.

The throw mud on a wall and hope something sticks is the only bullpen approach Minasian knows, and it doesn’t work.

Angels bullpen is last in ERA is 26th in ERA and last in WAR.

I have no idea how Minasian got extended.

@halo11fan. It might’ve turned out differently if we had joyce,Stephenson and crouse. I think the numbers are skewed because we had nothing but gas cans that gave up 6 runs in their debut or released three times and comes back like Anderson. He could’ve kept neris. Plus signing chafin and Garcia when they opted out would’ve work.

It might have. But after five season, when do you stop cutting him slack?

I don’t think the numbers are skewed. There are a lot of innings over those 5 years and I’m a big fan of large numbers.

I’d be shocked if Minasian ever got another GM job.

How about if he had Bachman on the active roster instead of Zeferjahn or Brogdon these last few weeks? I don’t understand Perry’s logic in how he’s handling Bachman (or even Detmers), both the last two 1st round pitching picks prior to Bremner. I have little faith in their ability to develop Bremner seeing how they’re handling Bachman and Detmers.

I don’t understand why Moore is here instead of getting everyday reps in the minor leagues.

I don’t think Minasian has a clue, and if results are any indication, he doesn’t.

Exactly. I’ve been wondering that myself – Moore is mostly sitting on the bench as Rengifo has been regularly starting at second base. And why not call up Lugo (who is already on the 40-man roster) to give them a 4th outfielder rather than wasting a roster spot with Kavadas.

Having Drury, Biggio or even Yolmer Sanchez as a utility infielder on the bench would make more sense than Moore. Yes, Moore needs to be playing everyday (in triple-A).
