Angels GM Perry Minasian spoke to reporters (including Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register) today about the club’s disappointing 2025 season, as well plans for the future of the club. Much of the conversation was focused on the decision to move on from both manager Ron Washington and interim manager Ray Montgomery in the dugout and search for a new skipper to lead the club. While Minasian didn’t tip his hand much on the club’s managerial search beyond noting that they’d like to find a new voice in the dugout sooner rather than later, he did make a number of intriguing comments about the state of the team headed into the offseason.
With Kyle Hendricks and Tyler Anderson both headed into free agency this offseason while Anaheim’s array of young pitching arms have yet to establish themselves as viable regular starters, Minasian suggested that there are three pitchers he has penciled into next year’s rotation: Yusei Kikuchi, Jose Soriano, and Reid Detmers. Kikuchi and Soriano are hardly surprising as both veterans turned in perfectly solid season in the rotation and remain under control for next year. Detmers, by contrast, is something of a surprise given his rocky tenure in the organization. The lefty was once among the game’s very best pitching prospects and pitched quite well in the rotation from 2022 to ’23 after a shaky debut in 2021.
Things changed last year when he was torched to the tune of a 6.70 ERA in 17 starts and spent much of the season in the minors. This year, Detmers pitched out of the bullpen and enjoyed a solid enough season where he posted a 3.96 ERA with a 3.12 FIP across 63 2/3 innings of work. While that role of single-inning reliever mostly worked out for the lefty, the Angels will now have him try his hand at starting once again. Minasian suggested he’s “earned” a spot in the rotation and that Detmers was “a different guy” last time he pitched as a starter for the club. While it may seem unorthodox to put Detmers back into a role he struggled in after he found success in the bullpen, it’s worth noting that the Angels did the same thing with Soriano to some success. The right-hander hadn’t made even 10 starts at any level since his stint at Single-A in 2019 when the club decided to put him in last year’s rotation, and he’s turned out quite well in that role.
With Detmers and Soriano joining Kikuchi in the rotation next year, that leaves two spots left unsettled. Caden Dana, Mitch Farris, Sam Aldegheri, and Jack Kochanowicz all pitched as starters in the majors for the club this year and remain young and at least somewhat intriguing, but none posted an ERA lower than 6.40 at the big league level this season and all four can be optioned to the minors, making them perhaps best served as depth options to protect against injury. Perhaps the club could invest in the rotation via free agency this winter, but the club’s budget remains a mystery. When asked by reporters about the club’s payroll flexibility this winter, Minasian said (as relayed by Sam Blum of The Athletic) that he and owner Arte Moreno “haven’t gotten into” the details about the club’s budget for next year.
It stands to reason at least some money will be available given that RosterResource projects the club for just $129MM in salary for next year, more than $75MM below where they were this year. Of course, arbitration salaries for both pricey veterans like Taylor Ward as well as first-time eligible players like Logan O’Hoppe and Zach Neto could make up some of that difference in a hurry, so it’s unclear whether or not Anaheim will be able to shop at the top of the market for arms like Framber Valdez, Dylan Cease, and Zac Gallen. This year’s crop of starting pitchers is somewhat thin after that top layer, but there are some solid back-of-the-rotation types like Zack Littell and Adrian Houser available as well.
Turning towards the positional side of things, Minasian made clear that the club plans to try and upgrade both center field and third base this winter. That’s not necessarily a surprise given Bryce Teodosio’s lackluster performance at the plate, Yoan Moncada’s impending free agency, and the fact that (according to Fletcher) Anthony Rendon hasn’t yet resumed baseball activities after undergoing surgery earlier this year. Minasian suggested the club also hopes to get more left-handed in the lineup and that Christian Moore would be in competition for a spot in the lineup, which would logically mean there’s room for an addition at second base as well. Aside from simply reuniting with Moncada or Luis Rengifo, the pickings in free agency for left-handed or switch-hitting infielders are somewhat slim. Jorge Polanco would be the cream of the crop if he can return to playing the field regularly, with Adam Frazier, Cavan Biggio, and Willi Castro joining Moncada and Rengifo among the next tier of options.
The idea of making a splash by adding a lefty-swinging center fielder is far more plausible with both Trent Grisham and Cody Bellinger likely ticketed for free agency coming off strong seasons, not to mention the availability of Cedric Mullins. Adding one of those three players (or someone similar) becomes harder to imagine when you consider the state of the club’s outfield mix, however. Minasian suggested that the Angels hope to get Mike Trout back into the outfield next year, but that would be a corner outfield capacity rather than moving him back to center.
Jorge Soler is under contract for next year and would be ticketed for regular at-bats at DH, and Minasian suggested that Jo Adell is an option in center field but the club would prefer to leave him in a corner. Taylor Ward enjoyed his best season since 2022 this year while playing exclusively left field. Given that logjam of right-handed outfield bats, it stands to reason that an addition to the outfield mix would either need to be a complementary player who shares time with Adell in center or be paired with a move to deal away one of the team’s other outfielders, though Trout obviously isn’t going anywhere and Soler likely has little value after an injury-marred season. Making a trade to clear room to bring in a free agent center fielder would likely stretch the club’s budget, of course, but perhaps the trade return for someone like Ward or Adell could address a need elsewhere on the roster to lighten that blow.

Your off season plans is whatever Arte thinks up spontaneously
I could have sworn the title said Perry Mason Discusses Angels’ Offseason Plans at first glance…
It was supposed to say Perry Minasian discuses Arte’s Offseason Plans
“Thanks for coming out. My plans this off-season are to carry Mr. Moreno’s golf bags on whatever courses he would like to travel to. Sure, it’s tough playing Pebble Beach while the family is home on Christmas Day. But this is the dang Los Angeles Angels….the GOSH DANG Los Angeles Angels! We put in the time.” – Perry Minasian, “Downey Junior High Gazette”
Please, for once, don’t spend on overpriced free agents. Let’s accept another lost season—or two—if that means we finally commit to something resembling a plan.
Start from the ground up: build a real minor league system (even though we all know the Angels haven’t shown they know how). Clear the dead salary weight. Lock up the few promising young players we do have by buying out a couple of their free-agent years.
But of course, that’s not what they’ll do.
Instead, get ready for the usual: overspending on aging, mediocre “names” just to sell the illusion of contending for a wild card spot. It’s the same tired script—shortsighted moves from a front office and ownership group that seems more interested in optics than actual long-term success.
We deserve better. But here we are.
Another bad year, another change in regime. Arte just doesn’t get how this all works, does he?
The only way the fans can make a statement if they don’t renewing season tickets stay home and watch the game at home
Still need to find a new owner, but no one is holding their breath for that one…..
Just release Soler. He sucked
How did $75 million come off the books?
It didn’t. Look at who wrote the article.
And only on year left on Rendon!
Rendon will get healthy this year……walk year!
Chris Taylor ($13 M); Tyler Anderson ($13 M); Kenley Jansen ($10 M); Taylor Ward ($7.8 M); Evan White ($6 M); Luis Rengifo ($6 M); LaMonte Wade Jr. ($5 M); Yoán Moncada ($5 M); Kevin Newman ($2.75 M); ($2.75 M); Kyle Hendricks ($2.5 M). That’s $71 million. Add in a few lower priced players eligible for arbitration (or non-tender) and you can get to $75 million. Of course some of these players will be re-signed or replaced.
Bronxlou
Chris Taylor ($13 M);
=======================
Taylor only cost about $500k.
Ward is not a FA, he is arb eligible and will get a large raise. so are 5 other players that will return. Those players will add $40 million to payroll, not reduce it. Their salaries are not coming off the books.
Taylor didn’t cost the Angels $13 million. The Dodgers paid $12,485,161. Wade cost the Angels $3,037,634 because the Giants paid his salary down. That makes the reduction in salary $14 million less.
Oh Angels. Remember when they had prime Trout and Ohtani at the same time…
I’d argue that prime Ohtani is now, but I might be wrong.
Ohtani had a higher OBP and SLG when he was with the Angels in 2023, while also coming in 4th in Cy Young voting in 2022.
Ohtani’s combined bWAR
2021 = 9.0
2022 = 9.6
2023 = 10.0
2024 = 9.2
2025 = 7.7
According to the numbers, his peak came with the Angels.
Interesting cherry picking. Last year he didn’t pitch. If you take his batting WAR over that same period:
2021=4.9
2022=3.4
2023=6.1
2024=9.2
2025=6.6
Since he was on Dodgers for the last two it seems to show him peaking now. When he pitches a full season next year look out!
I love Ohtani and always will, so I hope he can come back and pitch a full season.
But I would challenge your thinking, because his peak MUST include both pitching and hitting. I mean, THAT is what makes him more unique than any other player!
Very interesting cherry picking. He did pitch with the Angels and that contributed to his value. Since he has had little value as a pitcher for the Dodgers that means his peak value to a team came with the Angels.
Tell me how many seasons the 2 of them completed without at least one of them being injured?
Unfortunately, never healthy at the same time…
Plan? lol.
Whatever plan Minasian comes up with will stink. Best case scenario, the Angels don’t have 90 losses.
Another year of Minasian means another year of incompetence. The less he does the better.
Perry already made Soriano Available so he could sign Claudio and Guerra. We are lucky we got him back.
Almost every move Perry makes, makes us worse. We’re better off with him doing nothing.
They plan to have an off-season, but other than that…
Gallen?
worst run team in MLB
Angels are worse in my opinion
I wouldn’t spend on anything, nothing at all . Money can’t buy your way outta this: earmark it for later
They’ll have 75 peel off year after w Rendon Stephenson Soler and D’Arnaud
Give the kids and some reclamation projects all the 40 spots and see what sticks –
*tell Tony Singles not to bother showing up to spring training as well
Stephenson will have his 2.5 million team option exercised. I’m actually glad he got hurt.
Odd way for Wash to finish. Seems he might have been sold a false bill of goods. Never had a chance with a competitive roster.
if he believed that incompetent org would do anything serious it’s kind of on him. squandered prime Ohtani and Trout, continue to make bad decision after bad decision.
It is likely that he was not considered by other teams.
Rookie mgr poo wholes
Rookie in center
Rookie 4th and 5th starters
Rookie 8th inning reliever
Re sign Moncada and Rengifo
All you need to win more, is have average or above average performance from your players.
Platoons work
Rookie starters for 6th and 7th spots
Note: play little ball more. Get the one run.
Every hitter should be able to execute a safety squeeze
Note: how much did you pay for the team arte, how much is it worth now. Maybe because you have made such a huge profit, you can go ahead and get some money players!!!
gold masters
Every hitter should be able to execute a safety squeeze
=====================
I’m not a fan of the sac bunt, but every single lefty in the minors should be able to drop down a mediocre bunt down the LF line. I’m watching 3Bs playing the SS position because they have no fear of a bunt. Your OBP might be .800 even if you’re quasi-competent.
Not that I disagree it’s a great tool to have in your kit, but Downing couldn’t bunt.
I realize he’s right handed, he just couldn’t do it.
Unless you’re a really good bunter, there is little upside for a righty to bunt. But if the 3B is playing you in SS hole, you should bunt every opportunity.
Geez, Thankyou gold. What a wonderful idea. Maybe I will go get gallen and Tucker. Why not. I am tired of 4.0
trade or release everyone and start from scratch. take 2 years of savings on payroll and clean up the stadium. attended my first game there this year since before Covid, and it looked ghetto AF!! clean it up, tour Petco Park, and make Angel Stadium a place to visit. but the time they do that, we should have a hungry, young team, ready for some veteran free agents.
Perry’s plan has been the same every year
1. Hire a manager either a retread who has never won anywhere orsomeone who has never managed before
2. Sign a bottom rotation starter and tell us they are a top of rotation guy
3 sign middle infielders that were great hitters before the pandemic now can’t hit at all
4 get bench players that hit below .200
5 rebuild the bullpen with guys with era’s 6.00. AGAIN
6 trade for an outfielder with a contract that a team is desperate to get rid off
7 trade or sign someone from Atlanta
8 tell us Rendon is going to be an impact player this year
9 sign and dfa at least 15 players during the season
10 PISS OFF every fan that has been loyal to this team
That’s really close to David Stearns too
And don’t forget, tell us it’s a great clubhouse.
11-Draft a college kid and promote them by the time they hit 200 ABs or 100 IPs, production notwithstanding.
12-Absolutely refuse to consider a FA younger than 30. Players apparently don’t age in CA.
13-Under no circumstances allow Adell to get 600 ABs.
If you’re gonna blame Perry, blame Arte too
I blame them both. Owners typically have a longer tenure than GMs. I would love both to change, but I’ll settle for the low hanging fruit for now.
And you and I can disagree. A competent GM and an incompetent owner is better than an incompetent GM and an incompetent owner.
And if you think Minasian is competent, then we disagree again.
Even if a sale goes through, it takes months to sell a ball club…that’s high hanging fruit.
It takes days to replace a GM, that’s low hanging fruit.
That is the question.
I believe our drafts, signings and trades will change with a different GM. We will slowly get better.
But I strongly believe we will be better setup for tomorrow in the event Arte sells the team.
Arte is a huge problem. Minasian is not helping this teams future.
You have no idea Perrys competency. I can’t believe the crap I see here. Anybody who knows this team even a little bit knows the GM position for the Angels is basically a novelty spot. Moreno literally decides every single thing on this team. Several MLB execs through the years have made comments that Arty is basically a dictator and is involved significantly more than any other owner in the game….. He used to be great. He used to want to win. He made thousands of percent profit on this team from the purchase price, and now would rather have a losing team so he can have that extra 25ft to his yacht.
None of us know weather or not a GM for the Angels has been decent since Bill Stoneman, because since then, they’ve all just been the people who announce Artys decisions to the media
Why would signings and trades change when it’s been said time and time again that Arty is one who makes those decisions. Sure the GM can suggest anything he wants. But it isn’t his call. Even several players have mentioned in the past that Arty calls all the shots even though it’s done through the GM’s office.
Oh I think I do. It’s pretty hard to hide his incompetence. It’s basically demonstrated in virtually everything he does.
I knew it as soon as he lost Soriano and signed Claudio. No one with a clue would have done that and it hasn’t gotten any better.
And his 2020 draft was perhaps the worst in history. This is not second guessing. It was obvious when it happened,
The usual plan with no team depth and guys who were highly rated prospects 3-5 years ago.
Add on some promotions for guys who need to be in AA and you have the same recipe as always.
it’s a bummer. I truly feel for Angels fans. deserve so much more.
Angels off-season plan: throw s*** at wall, see what sticks…
Angels will need a few off seasons to form completive team. I may watch a few games but will spend time elsewhere unless the club is a surprise at the all-star break.
Payroll as of today will be just a few million less than the $206 million in 2025 when the $40 million or more in arbitration raises are taken into account. After that we have 8 players leaving in FA that will have to be replaced.
What Perry is saying about the starting pitching is that we have a #3, a #4, and a #5 starter and a handful of 6’s. He is saying pretty loudly that we cannot expect Arte to spend what is needed or extend a long enough contract to bring in any top of the rotation starters and we can expect more of the same from the rotation. The pickings in FA are somewhat slim. Valdez, King, Cease, maybe Gallen. All will get long term deals that Arte has been unwilling to offer for more than a decade.
Then we have a bullpen that was the worst in the Al this season. The closer is gone. Perry just said Detmers is moving into the rotation. The returning relievers combined for an ERA over 6.00.
Everywhere else we have huge holes the pickings are also slim and there is nothing on the farm to use as bait in trades.
A new manager, new coaching staff, and a third of the players also being new. Not a recipe for success in 2026 in my opinion. In the last decade there has not been a single season where Angels fans went into the offseason with any hope of the team contending the following season. This year is more of the same.
Arte, sell the team.
Here’s what Arte sees:
Trout played a pretty full year. He’ll be back to MVP form.
Joyce and Stephenson are good relievers so we’re pretty set there.
Bremner will totally be ready for a playoff push.
Adell and Ward will hit 70 bombs again.
Once Pujols is manager we’re ready to compete.
We will be competitive again in X+3 years with X being when Arte sells.
Biggio played in angles minors. Not on anyone’s tier lately it seems
They have one good player in Neto and a trashed roster otherwise. If other teams are dumb enough to believe Adell is a defensive outfielder they should trade him for pitching. Trout will need a lot of DH days. Starting from scratch again this off season pretty much.
No mention of Catcher being a position of need, despite coming in dead last in Wins Above Average at the position in both leagues..
O’Hoppe has had his opportunity, and rather than improving year-over-year, his numbers have continuously gotten worse.
Not giving up on O’Hoppe already, that would be foolish.
O’Hoppe still has 3 options remaining. No need to give up on him, but if the Angels say they are trying to compete, they need to upgrade the position rather than hope for his improvement.
Caratini, Danny Jansen, Sean Murphy, heck even Contreras if the Cardinals truly are rebuilding and he’s willing to move back to Catcher (a big if, but still) – there are inexpensive opportunities out there if the GM has any creativity.
Realmuto might cost real money, but he’ll be available, too.
So, yes, keep O’Hoppe. But demand improvement, and make him earn his playing time moving forward.
In the meantime, seek help at the position.
Realmuto is actually the Arte Way. A free agent well over 30 so almost guaranteed to decline soon if not immediately that will cost a lot of money but draw fans to the park.
Still better than O’Hoppe!
Yeah, Realmuto would not be at the top of my list.
Someone like Caratini would be a decent fit. He can bat lefthanded, doesn’t strike out a lot, takes his walks, he’s decent defensively, inexpensive, and won’t block O’Hoppe if Logan can improve and become the player with promise we saw a few years ago.
Caratini was $6 million last season and has averaged a lower WAR than O’Hoppe. O’Hoppe had a bad 2025. We are not going to be playoff bound even with Raleigh behind the plate, so go with the kid who may rebound and is also cheaper.
Of course you don’t write off O’Hoppe, since he can’t frame and his pop time is molasses, pitches challenges may help.
Plus there is no one else.
The Angles have plans. How acute.
Wrong Ron Washington on the link
On his way to dinner when it took him by surprise
And with one pull of the trigger he would vanish overnight
Dancing by the roadside, holding on for dear life
Then a gun from out of nowhere made a widow of his wife
I don’t mind
Single file down the runway
Feelin’ fine
And I’ll see you my friend
Over and over again
Who can we get on the case?
We need Perry Minasian
Someone to put you in place
Calling Perry Minasian again
Note: I keep a pen and paper next to bed. I wake up from a dream and I write it down.. you average 5 dreams a night. My goal is to recall at least one. Wake slowly, recall the dream, write it down.
You might dream who is going to win the big game. Ask your angel to give you the dream.
Nothing in this article suggests Moreno has any plans to change his strategy. The fact that Detmers will be back in the rotation shows there has been zero reflection on how to win.
Winning begins and ends with pitching…prove me wrong.
A bunch of one year pitching contracts like always.
That would be good. Give the next GM and hopefully owner a clean slate.
This team is so oddly built. .Haven’t developed a young pitcher in forever. Neto, Ward, and Adell are pretty good. Last two need new contracts soon. At least Kikuchi has been worth the money and Trout made it all season. Not sure where this team goes from here, they aren’t terrible but just seem to be in this weird cycle of never progressing.
1627
That is the key number we are not looking at
That is how many times the Angels struck out.
100 more than any other team in baseball
Over 650 of them. Are between Trout Adell Ward and Neto.
How about getting guys that make contact
Productive outs.
I’m sure they would also tell you they need to cut down on the strikeouts, but those four are absolutely not why the Angels are a bad team. Without their offensive contributions, the team would have been significantly worse last year.
1000%
It’s everywhere even with players that played much less (Kyren, Oswald, etc).
It’s one of two things: A) they’re being coached wrong, or B) the evaluators and scouts are wrong.
IMHO, they are promoted too quickly. Look at the strikeout rates for Adell, Paris, Moore, O’Hoppe, and even Neto. They had virtually no AAA experience before their first promotion.
With guys like Lugo and Kavadas, they’re older and unlikely to improve. But the 5 I mentioned probably could’ve used a full year in AAA.
And you didn’t even mention Denzer and his 51% SO%.
Yeah, I’ve thought about that, too, and tend to agree with you.
It’s still systemic, but if they can fix their teaching/approach AND give them time in the minors to master this approach, that would be helpful.
The main point you are missing is that the majority of good prospects play very little if any time in AAA unless they are blocked at the major league level by a superstar. You can count on your fingers the number of top 100 prospects that spent a full season at AAA. That level is mostly for veteran players that are not good enough to make the major league roster on OD but provide good depth in the eventuality of injuries. None of the Angels prospects were blocked by anyone.
Neto – 5.1 WAR and 5.1 WAR in his 1st 2 full seasons in 2024 and 2025. Only 4 SS produced better results. Obviously he didn’t need any more time in the minors.
With Adell we had a choice of letting him not play at all in 2020 because there was no minor leagues or promoting him. He already had 2 seasons in the high minors including an OPS pretty close to .900 in AA. You are saying you would have preferred him to not play at all in 2020 and lose whatever progression he had made to that point. If you don’t believe prospects lost progression, look at what the vast majority that would have been in the high minors in 2020 did when they got to the majors in 2021-2022. At 34.2 WAR, 2021 saw the lowest rookie production overall in decades. By comparison 2019 was 56.4 WAR and 2023 was 78.6 WAR
Paris had 4 full seasons in the minors before his first cup of coffee in the majors. That is plenty of time. In 2024 and 2025 he was called up because the organization had no other choice due to injuries. Can’t fault them for that.
O’Hoppe had 504 PA and a .943 OPS in AA. He was not going to improve his game playing in Salt Lake City.
Some players do benefit from more time in the minors. Very few benefit from playing in an environment like SLC or the rest of the PCL.
I’m not sure who you are arguing with or why? Nobody disagrees with any of this, nor has anybody suggested anything you are saying.
Make the whole team (including coaches) watch how the Brewers approach hitting now and how the Angels approached hitting in 2002.
Teach Trout how to play first base (like Pujols, Harper and many other great players did when time/injury history required) to get him on the field as a contributor, keeping his mind sharp. Also frees up DH at bats.
Trade Ward (good guy, value has never been higher) for a pitcher who can be counted on for an ERA lower than 4 and make 30 starts.
Sign either Tucker or Bellinger.
Keep Detmers in the pen, Adell in right.
Resign Kenley Jansen for maturity and poise (and as an in house bullpen coach).
Regarding manager … most important factor will be the entire coaching staff that can be assembled to redirect the mental preparation/approach the on field outcomes.
If Angels background is so important, consider Erstad as manager, Benji Molina as bench/catching coach, Garret Anderson as hitting/outfield coach, Jered Weaver as pitching coach, David Eckstein as infield coach.
No on to Trout at 1B. Schanuel is doing well enough and his slg% is improving. His WAR was nearly identical to Trout’s in 2 less games. Leave it alone and let him mature.
Ward is not bringing back a front of the rotation starter, just another 4-5, so trading him hurts the team,. No.
If you sign Tucker he will play RF. Bellinger had 107 starts in LF and RF this season as opposed to 38 in CF where his defense was far below average. He would probably play a corner also. Trout will need to play a corner also since Soler is the DH.
If you keep Detmers in the pen, who starts? As Minasian said, there are 2 other starters that can be counted on and a bunch of #6 types.
Would be ok with Erstad as the manager, but he has no experience coaching in the pros. college is a different game entirely.
They should resign Hendricks.
I don’t hate the idea of trading Ward because this is likely his peak. Baseball Trade Values pegs his value at a very similar level to Brady Singer. Interesting, because the Reds desperately need some offense.
Another fun example would be to look at Alcantara for Dana and Dylan Jordan. Two good prospects for an ace.
Neither would not effectively change the payroll of the club in any meaningful way. (Alcantara is owed about what Anderson+Hendricks cost this past year)
Real life isn’t quite that simple, but the moral to the story is that the GM needs to be creative and open to ways to improve this team. To me. starting pitching needs to be priority 1, 2, and 3, which may mean trading a bat and/or a couple of our better prospects.
BTV is not worth even visiting, not even for entertainment value.
Angels are not getting Singer for Ward.
Alcantara is not an ace. Not by a long shot. He had a 5.36 ERA this season. He is owed $19.3 million. That is a definite no.
The Angels are not going to get a legitimate #1-#2 for 2 reasons. Number one is that Arte has not committed to a contract for a starting pitcher over 3 years in a decade and its not likely to ever happen again. Guys like Valdez and King are not signing a 3 year or shorter deal. Number two is that there is nothing on the farm to trade to get a true #1-#2 starting pitcher. We don’t have any good enough prospects to get one. Bremner who hasn’t played a game of pro ball yet and Johnson who got pounded in Anaheim last season. The cupboard is pretty bare.
You think Perry’s will turn him into anything? I don’t.
I’d rather you were the Angels GM to Perry. Perry is just that bad.
I like the angels losing just because of their stupid name.
It’s one of the oldest names in baseball. The name goes back to 1903.
