After winning the AL West and reaching Game 7 of the ALCS, it isn’t surprising that the Mariners are looking to stick with a successful formula. That means “ideally keeping as much of the group that we had last year, that we really believed in, together,” general manager Justin Hollander told the Seattle Times’ Ryan Divish and other reporters at the GM Meetings this week.
“Our offseason is largely going to start with the guys who were on the team last year and try to bring as many back as possible,” Hollander said, with the M’s “then filling in the rest of the roster as required.” To this end, Hollander said the team has been in contact with the agents for their six free agents — Josh Naylor, Jorge Polanco, Eugenio Suarez, Caleb Ferguson, Luke Jackson, and Mitch Garver.
“I think they know how we feel, and don’t really believe in progress or no progress,” Hollander said. “When you get to a deal, you get to a deal, but I think everybody’s aware of where we’re at right now and that we do have interest, and we’ll just keep playing it day by day until we can get deals or have to pivot elsewhere.”
Hollander naturally didn’t give any hints about the details of these negotiations, though logic would dictate that the Mariners won’t be re-signing all six players. The M’s have been open about their desire to retain Naylor, so the common belief is that Naylor and Polanco are the most likely internal free agents to re-up for new contracts, while the other four will probably be playing elsewhere in 2026.
The potential departures of Ferguson and Jackson coincide with Seattle’s desire to add to its bullpen, which Hollander said was another “area of focus for us this offseason.” Led by star closer Andres Munoz, the Mariners’ relief corps was more solid than a surefire plus in 2025, as the club’s collective 3.72 ERA (ninth of 30 teams) was undermined by control problems and middling strikeout numbers. Beyond these numbers, Hollander also acknowledged “the realities that our high-leverage group just worked really hard for an extra month of the season. We would be silly not to expect that to take a toll over time….Making the bullpen deeper and longer is important.”
Adding relief help of any kind is the priority, yet Divish feels the Mariners might make a point of adding a southpaw. Gabe Speier is currently the only left-hander projected to be part of Seattle’s bullpen, and minor leaguers Jhonathan Diaz and Tayler Saucedo are the only other southpaws on the Mariners’ 40-man roster.

Even Mitch Garver?
They didn’t want to leave him out.
I do. Screw that dude, LOL
Lord – I know Yankee fans dislike him, but what do you think are the odds of Naylor signing with the Yankees? Lefty first baseman with some power (31 homers last year) seems like a perfect fit.
I think the M’s could surprise everyone by signing Murakami.
Rice is gonna play 1b. They don’t need naylor. They will be in the outfield market
The Yanks are all his little f$%@ing son
He dislikes the Yankee fans too. Not happening.
You could safely give him extra years because he would crush at your ballpark. Expect 30 bombs with a high average.
At t mobile I feel he’ll have warning track power especially early in the year
His stolen bases are what they are, he was trying hard late in the season but I wouldn’t expect more than 15 stolen bases for a reasonably healthy Naylor
kwolf – One thing I learned many, many years ago …. don’t believe everything management says.
If the Yanks can fill a large need by trading Rice and signing Naylor, they will do it. They just won’t come out and say it’s a possibility, obviously.
Baby – The same thing was said about Vlad, and yet the Yankees were considering pursuing him until he signed his extension and he himself changed his tune on playing for the Yankees, apparently after a talk with his dad.
At the end of the day, the right amount of money can turn hate into love really quick. Just look how fast the Yankees fans will suddenly love Bregman if he signs with them … no different than Sox fans this year. Reminds me of pro wrestling actually. LOL
Oh, wait—Yankee fans dislike Naylor?!?
Now I REALLY hope he comes back!
@Fever, with Naylor signing back with the Mariners, it no longer matters!
I think the Yankees are committed to Ben Rice at 1B if for no other reason than he’s cheap and good, so they’ll spend their money elsewhere. Yankee fans would have liked Naylor once he was wearing pinstripes.
Lord – You think Ben’s catching days are completely over? Is he that bad a catcher?
I don’t get the impression they believe he’s a full-time catcher defensively, at least yet. His best chance would have been a full season in AAA, but his bat forced him onto the MLB team. Maybe he can get there working part time in 2026. Organizationally, they’re good at developing catchers defensively. I think your team has one of them!
Lord – These days there’s really no such thing as a fulltime catcher. Only 3 guys in MLB caught more than 120 games this year. Rice could maybe catch around 60 games and play first base the other games?
Yeah no question the Yanks are good at developing catchers.
I agree. Why Seattle would want to catch Cal even 120 games doesn’t make sense. Utilize young players Ford, Young at 2B, Williamson at 3B.
Mariners do have some coaching staff openings.
From St Louis.. can we interest you in a Nolan Arenado/Jo Jo Romero package?
No thank you, we would much rather have Brendan Donovan though. Thank you.
Cards fans pitching Arenado hard is hilarious.
Ooh I think the mariners would rather try calling up Colt emerson instead of trading for a 600 ops aging 3rd baseman on a huge contract
Yankees and Angels might beg to differ however
I remember thinking Emerson was at least a year away, no..? Also who better to mentor a top prospect?
Emerson raked at AAA for his two-week end-of-season call up. With any luck, he’s starting every day in Seattle by July.
Throw in Jordan Walker and you have a deal.
The only ones I want back are Naylor and Polanco. I’d consider Geno on a shorter deal, but I don’t trust him. The other three can be replaced.
Geno is a good club house guy. I’d take him back in a minute. I don’t think he is going to get long term anyway at this stage of his career, but he will cost, I am guessing.
I love Geno’s effect on the clubhouse and I have no doubt that he’d be fine with re-signing with the Mariners. He was an easy out most of the time after Seattle re-acquired him. That gets old.
Geno always runs hot and cold. I think the first part of the season, he was scalding hot and cooled after he was traded, which sucked for the M’s. I was actually rooting for you guys in the AL. Naylor is a favorite of mine too. Kind of reminds me of John Kruk (who I knew from being in the Phillies org once when I was in the minors).
I love Naylor. That dude might be the smartest player in the league.
Geno is almost ALWAYS behind in the count. Here’s a prototypical Geno at bat.
Strike one down the middle
Check swing foul ball for strike two. (He’s the master of the check swing foul ball)
Now it’s 0-2. The pitcher then has lots of options to get him out. And often they do with a K.
Let someone else pay him for that frustration. The occasional power is great, but it comes with a lot of cringey AB’s.
K001
Big fan of Naylor. Steals bases even though he is one of the slowest players in the MLB. Look for the Red Sox to make a play for him. Makes contact so he doesn’t strikeout much. Good average, decent power and plays a position of need for the Sox.
It would be a pretty big deal for them to get Naylor and Suarez back.
I’ll take the 3 and trade JP/ Castillo
Sign Naylor and another leverage reliever and then try and get a combination of one of the following via trade
( we have the farm system to pull it off)
1. Brendan Donovan and Jojo Romero Cardinals
2. Brandon Lowe, Garret Cleavinger and Yandy Diaz (DH) Rays
3. Steven Kwan
4. Ketel Marte
Logan Evans, Ryan Sloan, and Ford for Burly, Donnie, Pagés, and maybe Robberse? Too much, too little? M’s and Cards seem way too obvious of trade partners right now. Need some of their pitching and Burly plus Donnie seem the only good trade chips to get there. I like Contreras at 1B. Walker and Noot need until the deadline to see what they are after this offseason.
I kind of like it. If we sign
Naylor, Burleson can DH and play some RF. Donovan is needed at 2b, I like your idea of pages as a back up catcher. I would just switch Robberse for JoJo Romero. Thanks for the cool response and trade idea.
JoJo needs to go to Boston with Arenado (plus cash) and Crooks for even more pitching.
I don’t think burleson and Donovan is worth as much as a top 50 prospect and 2 top 150s
The only pitcher we would probably trade right now is Castillo (and maybe Kirby too)
It is not just those two. It is another badly needed quality LH in the bullpen in Romero and a strong back up catcher. It is four players and Donovan is badly needed as a 2B and leadoff hitter and Burleson would be a strong DH for the M’s.. I am sure you still disagree but those two additional players would help.
Perhaps swap Cjente for Sloan. He’s a stud they’d regret trading. Lots of trade suggestions surrounding him in particular.
I should hope so!
Pass on Mitch Garver who should hang it up .
Bazardo is already warming up.
Naylor is wildly overrated at this point.
10 career fWAR. 2.2 Steamer war proj for ‘26
Yay
2.2 WAR equates to around $20 million these days, and that’s about what he’ll get for 4-5 years.
Ok Mr stats guy does WAR account for intangibles, because Josh does literally every intangible out there
Also 1st base war is always extremely low like look at guys like Guerrero or Alonso or war
That’s because they bring little or no defensive value playing the easiest position on the field.
Tell him, Wash.
But WAR isnt what gives big contracts, 1st basemen can still get huge contracts despite not having over 5 WAR
Hank cmon man really 1st base is the easiest position to field ? …..its far from it …..no mlb position is easy but please tell me what are your reasons for saying that? No sarcasm on my end just very curious what you think…..thank you HH
How many errors do guys like Freddie & Matt Olson prevent with the way they pick balls out of the dirt & snare wildly flung (thrown) balls?
Exactly. Most people will look at Naylor’s stolen bases and have no idea that he’s one of the slowest runners in the league, or see the low K% and not realize he’s in the bottom 7% in chase rate.
I’m teasing, of course. I don’t think he’s overrated, he fit in nicely with Seattle. But there are other options. It shouldn’t be Naylor-or-bust.
Gmoney sorry my good man I would say the complete opposite meaning he doesn’t get enough praise a biscuit under .300 hitter solid all around plus he plays with passion and fire old school type gritty n tough ….after Yankees were out I was rooting for Seattle. I have been watching Naylor last few seasons and he keeps getting better imho …..He would look great in Yankees pinstripes and short porch u can rotate Rice between catching dh or move him for a relief help …. Naylor probably stays in Seattle but wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up a Yankee…..If your a Seattle fan this article is a great sign of the front office going for it .
Garver is gone. Ford is ready. Keep him in mind for your deep 2 catcher leagues next year.
Suarez is not coming back. Twice now he has struggled here.
Naylor is the prize. I’ve never seen a player fit so well after a trade like he has.
Poloanco will simply get more $ elsewhere.
I could see them getting Polanco and Naylor. I would pass on Polanco myself.
Yeah, Polanco will go back to being injured half the season or more after this contract year.
I wouldn’t resign POLANCO
Hmmm…
Keep the 2025 roster but add players too?
Will they petition MLB for additional roster spots?
How witty!
Nothingburger filler article. Yes, you sign Josh Naylor even if you have to overpay. There just isn’t anyone else. Yes, go trade for or sign a high-leverage LHRP with heat. You have only one. And you’ll need at least seven scary batters in the order, not four (Arozarena, Julio, Cal, and Josh). If you limit the glove-first guys to Young (who needs some work with Perry Hill) and Williamson, you have holes at RF, SS, and DH. Donovan from the Cards is a good start. If the Guardians make Kwan available, that’s an easy yes. A 4-man bench starts with Ford and Rivas. And, scene.
I think it would be wise to consider the difference between Naylor, Alonso, and O’Hearn, and what it will cost to address their other needs respectably.
I could see them getting O’Hearn as a value signing. Padres too
Good call Zip. Four is not enough. Seven gets them back to the playoffs and beyond. If they can sign Naylor, they still have some work to do at 2b and or 3b and at DH.
Colt Emerson will be taking over at third base soon enough.
In a perfect world who do Mariners fans want to sign? I go Naylor at 1b, and Murakami or the other Japanese third baseman (can’t remember his name and the search on this site is terrible).
By all accounts Murakami’s glove is bad enough that he’ll be limited to 1B/DH in MLB, and the contact profile and inability to hit velo/breaking balls is scary though he has room to improve at age 25. Okamoto is a marginally better defender and has a higher offensive floor, though a lower ceiling at age 29.
The strikeout percentage is scary. 31% I think I read which is nuts. I could be wrong. Chances are it gets even worse here. He does have age on his side.
GM Jerstin if prepping to clear the books and the GM meetings, expect to trade
1. Castillo 24m for ____?
2. Jp/Raley for ____?
Then sign Naylor
Trade for Marte for Harry Ford, Arroyo , Peete
Trade for Cj Abrams for Cjintge, Montes
Emerson and Montes should be untouchable. CJ Abrams would be a great upgrade at short though. Cjintge and Peete would likely get it done.
Ford is trade bait
I would think that Mitch Garver‘s agent’s number would’ve been been blocked by now.
Please no to Garver and Ferguson. Release Saucedo. Prohibit Vargas and Bazardo from pitching in final games of playoff series (if M’s make it to the post season).
Bazardo was absolutely great. Overused in the Jays series.
Anything that can help carry them to the World Series next year sounds good to me.
Does this help or hurt their chances of reaching the World Series in 2026?
I hate to say this, but they need to trade JP for whatever they can get, so they can give the Captaincy to Cal. I know the Ms don’t have an Official captain but Crawford has been the unofficial captain since Seager retired. The Yankees named Judge their Captain, the Mariners need to do that for Cal.
Only if they use BD instead of C on the uniform and put one letter on each butt cheek.
Well done Sir
I don’t think you realize how vital JP is to the team chemistry and their success. It’s far more likely he’s extended and possibly slides over to second than dealt away to another team or left to walk following the 2026 season.
I have Naylor, Polanco, and Suarez going elsewhere, but hey that’s just me…
Mariner fans is JP Crawford really available & if so what would it take to get him on the Braves ?
Highly unlikely available.
A quality starting pitching prospect. We have Colt Emerson who can take over as. (Or Cole Young)
@SteelerBraveNation, The two teams don’t really match up. For the starting shortstop of the Mariners, even if he were made available (which is dubious), the Braves don’t have equivalent major league talent that would make it worth the while. Maybe JP and Luis Castillo for Riley, D. Lee, and $60 million to offset the salary? But I can’t see the Braves doing that, either.
Mariners are cheap and nobody wants to play in Seattle
Yet Naylor just re-signed. SMH
@green – Nice comment from 2021. Well done.
Never mind the fact they extended Julio, Cal, JP, Victor Robles and signed Naylor.
Alex Bohm and either Matt Strahm/Jose Alvarado
For
Harry Ford, Jarred Sundstrum and Michael Morales.
Would a deal like this work for both teams?
Mariners get 2 players who have played at an AllStar level in the past in contract years and Phillies get one real prospect they can plug into Catcher position plus 2 lower tier prospects who may or may not ever make the majors while freeing up $18M-$20M this year to use at another position.
