Pirates Avoid Arbitration With Jack Suwinski, Yohan Ramirez

By Darragh McDonald | November 20, 2025 at 7:10pm CDT

7:10pm: They’ve also reached an arb-avoiding deal with middle reliever Yohan Ramírez, reports Alex Stumpf of MLB.com. He’ll make $825K next season. Ramirez pitched to a 5.40 ERA in 33 1/3 innings for the Bucs this year.

6:05pm: The Pirates and outfielder Jack Suwinski have avoided arbitration, reports Robert Murray of FanSided. Suwinski will make $1.25MM next year. MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz had projected him for a $1.7MM salary.

Tomorrow is the non-tender deadline. Teams have until 4pm Central to decide whether or not to tender contracts to their arbitration-eligible and pre-arb players. They don’t need to agree to a salary by tomorrow but it’s the last chance for clubs to walk away from a player and pay him nothing.

It’s common for a few deals to be finalized in the lead-up to the deadline. In many cases, but not always, these “pre-tender” deals see the player agree to a salary below projections. The oversimplified version of how this happens is that teams put a “take it or leave it” offer on the table. If the player decides to “leave it”, the team will simply non-tender him. Since Suwinski has been struggling lately and will make about half a million less than projected, it’s possible that happened here.

Back in 2023, Suwinski seemed to be breaking out in the big leagues, as he hit 26 home runs that year with strong batted-ball data to back it up. His 32.2% strikeout rate was way too high but he offset that with the power and also drew walks at a 14% clip. He also lined up at all three outfield positions. His work in center was panned but he was decent in the corners.

Things have been trending down since then. He has stepped to the plate 455 times over the past two years with a dismal .169/.271/.297 line. His .220 batting average on balls in play hasn’t helped but his batted-ball data has declined. His strikeout rate has stayed high at 29.9% while his walk rate dropped to 11.2%.

Due to that rough performance, he has been optioned to the minors with some regularity. In the process, he has exhausted his option seasons and will be out of options going forward. The Bucs could have walked away this week but have apparently not totally given up on a bounceback. For what it’s worth, Suwinski has continued producing in Triple-A, with a .283/.389/.565 line and 149 wRC+ at that level in 2025.

Suwinski’s salary will be barely above the league minimum, which will be $780K next year, so it’s not a massive risk for the Bucs. If Suwinski continues to struggle, he can be cut from the roster without it being too much of a sunk cost. He would also likely clear waivers in that scenario and would stick around as non-roster depth. He is two days away from having three years of service time, which would give him the right to reject an outright assignment and elect free agency. However, since he has less than five years of service, he would have to forfeit his remaining salary commitments in exercising that right.

The Bucs go into 2026 with Oneil Cruz and Bryan Reynolds projected in two outfield spots. The Bucs could add someone to take a third spot but it’s fairly open for now, with Suwinski in the mix alongside Will Robertson, Billy Cook and others.

        2022 794 ops
        2023 856 ops

They didn’t want to settle for that so tried making him better. Wait until we get our Haines on him. It was a disaster. 2025 they got him back on track but not fully and he had had some poor luck. He could hit 30 hrs. For 1m why not find out. Easy decision to bring him back.

You’re just making up numbers now. He had a .709 OPS in 2022 and a .793 OPS in 2023.

          Jack Suwinski OPS each year

          2022- 709
          2023- 793
          2024- 588
          2025- 534

          Career- 694

If giving that guy a roster spot is an easy decision, your team sucks. And, our team does suck so it checks out. Sgobucs.

      Also surprised.

Suwinski was very smart to take less and avoid being non-tendered.

Not making up anything. You’re just not bright enough to realize I was talking about vs RHP because with his 7 abs vs LHP last year Jack is a platoon until proven otherwise so no reason to use his numbers vs LHP. Instead of using just a lil common sense or taking 3 seconds to look that up your mind goes to I am just randomly making nunbers up for what reason no idea. My numbers should be 100 percent accurate so no bright eyes I wasn’t making anything up.

Why? Because at no point did you ever mention his OPS vs right-handed pitching. You just commented:
          “2022 794 ops
          2023 856 ops”

How am I supposed to know that’s his OPS against right-handed pitching when you never specified it?

To assume other people have the ability to read your mind and or they should have known what you meant or that because they assumed (and rightfully so) you meant what you wrote and were just wrong and didn’t look it up and try to figure out what some stranger on the internet posted, that they lack intelligence?

You’re either young and have some growing up to do or when it comes to intelligence, maybe not put others down when you are obviously in the wrong

I didn’t assume anything. I simply posted his platoon numbers because he is a platoon player and those are the only numbers that matter imo. What he does in garbage time vs pitchers he doesn’t have the ability to hit is irrelevant to me. I don’t deal in useless information. If someone wants to ask where I got that number I will gladly answer nicely. If they want to get feisty I will as well. It wasn’t bright to say I was just making numbers up. The logical reasons were I was using a different statistic or looked at the wrong number or player or simply typed it wrong. Making numbers up out of nowhere is at the bottom of the list of reasons. If someone asked where are you getting those numbers at or mine are different what am I missing I would have handled it differently but when it comes from someone who had me muted for the last 3 years or so and just fairly recently unmuted me and in our 2nd interaction basically calls me a liar yeah I am not going to react the same to that person as I would someone else. Don’t like it don’t care feel free to mute me. But that’s the story behind it. I do just go around saying yo what’s up stupid.

Yeah trade deadline July 31st to end of world series I go days weeks without checking in. Probably my most active year this year which wasn’t active. Since I have a superior baseball mind I don’t care who these lesser creatures name mvp or put in the hall of fame. Don’t care who wins world series but glad the most exciting team with all the stars made it and won. All about trades. Off season is alright but July is my month.

Yeah I do the exercise as well. Don hobbies that give you exercise lifting hiking biking martial arts even did salsa dancing with the old lady. Also recommend hobbies that pay well vs money pits. Also combing pleasure with work. Be a fishing guide of you can stomach the new Nashville metrosexuals. Maybe you are one? Don’t ruin it for me. I picture you eating wings drinking beer maybe some grits for breakfast lil whisky in your coffee driving a big truck listening to country music not that new garbage but 80s 90s.

I like the old guys. These young mouth breathers aren’t capable of figuring out I was talking about his platoon ops since he is a platoon hitter. Instead of being able to understand the simplest thing they accuse probably the most analytical person in the world of for some strange reason of making up numbers.

The “old guys” rely on their eyes and their feel for the game. Guys like bright eyes have no idea what that means. Again, I’ll refer to The Natural here, when Roy Hobbs asks Mercy, “Did you ever play the game, Max?”
I’d expect analytics guys to answer about the same. “No. Can’t say I did”
I just finished Clint Hurdle’s book in a day. I’d say he used analytics the right way…with a mix of his gut

@AI: Lol, no I’m not a metrosexual. I retired 5 years ago. I do love music—-mostly rock and roll from any decade, jazz, and classical (I used to be a trumpet player.) I’m 69, a widower (16 years), spend my spare time following baseball, fishing, playing tournament poker, trading stocks, exercising (fast walk every day for an hour, weights 6 days a week, and more)—-you know, living the good life. I own a bass boat and spend a lot of time fishing here in Nashville/Smyrna at Percy Priest Lake and some local rivers w/my longtime fishing partner of 45 years—-not bass fishing though. Do a lot of night fishing for crappie, catfish, and white bass. I don’t drink—-quit drinking on my 30th birthday. Don’t have a truck anymore either, lol—-used to though.

          @NashvilleMe.

Edit only read if you are absolutely bored to death and have the tiniest amount of interest in my hobby history. I type fast and as fast as my mind can put out random thoughts. Won’t be offended if you don’t read. You been warned.

Sounds like good times well excluding the widower part.

I tried a lot of hobbies. Moved on came back. As a kid I collected magic cards, sports cards, comics, coins, played with toys and video games but collected them unknowingly since I never got rid of them and parents didn’t either. Many would call me a hoarder I suppose. Never went back to sports cards, I stack but don’t collect, got into magic video games comics again. But sold most of it because I got heavy into art. I don’t like r & b rap at all. Not big on metal. It’s pop rock for me. Thay can be anything from Van Halen Paramore Alabama Garth Toby Petty Aerosmith Avril Rodrigo Blackpink No Doubt Poison Alice Cooper singing Poison whatever catches my ear. I get bored with the same stuff and they don’t make much pop rock anymore so I gotta go way down the rabbit hole sometimes.

I trade stocks. Trade crypto too. If you told me I had to buy it and keep it for 10 years I wouldn’t touch it. But I won’t turn down the easiest $ in the history of earth as we know it. If I see a card game comic coin painting furniture that I can make a buck on I buy it. So really my hobby is picking. I like anything interesting entertaining. I played poker. Loved it. Just some reason stopped. Didn’t win enough $ Took too much dedicated time. I dunno. I just moved on. I haven’t played video games in months pushing a year who knows. Any day I could start playing every day or maybe never play again. Same with drinking and other things. Could do it often for a week or two then go years without. Just a social thing. I don’t need to get rid of pain depression or feel a high.

More things I haven’t been into then have. Rc cars boats planes drones hunting fishing camping bushcraft go carts dirt bikes atvs motor cycles cars imports classic antique built computers lived in car lived in van lived on boat lived on yacht lived on sail boat played paintball played guitar which didn’t last long played every sport I ever heard of I’m talking cricket and curling disc golf. Anything a stereotypical man would do I done a lot of. Ham radio I never done. But have done meteorology and astronomy. Never astrology or cosmetology.

No idea why I talk about baseball or even catch some games. So many superior things to do imo. I use analytics for work so it transitions well I guess. No idea why I work though. Should just be a day trader or art dealer or video game streamer. Guess I can do all of it though. Could do more if I just left mlbtr. Instead of taking months off just disappear forever. Who’s going to grade the trades though? Maybe I can still do that and just do away with telling @NashvilleJeff every hobby I ever had. I feel like I had to though. I got a sign from above or somewhere. I had a dream that you me and Mike Tauchman were in the shower together well that’s a story for another time. Love talking with you. But anytime you can tell me your starting to bore me, just grade the bleeping trades. I don’t do TikTok Facebook Instagram Twitter nothing so mlbtr fills my social media hole. Work on my terrible stand up routine. No one ever said I was funny but I keep trying. But not much baseball news to talk about. Braves spent 16m on a reliever. I hate spending $ on a reliever. He doesn’t scream I want to spend 16m. Can’t trash it either. So can’t even talk about it. I have no opinion on it if you believe that. Very meh. He’s pretty good but 16m is kinda a lot. 1 year though so gotta pay a lil more. Yeah meh is the word. Meh.

And I heard of it years ago. Probably don’t have the time. But for $5 to hear what these so called experts have to educate me is catchy. I should be on there with my scouting and analytics course! Red Sox should have taken my course before giving away a cy young pitcher for Vaughn Grissom!!!!!!!!!!! @NashvilleJeff One time it put me instead of Jeff weird as I just copy paste it.

Anyways what do you read? In school I only read what I was forced to read and actually not sure I read any of it. I had no interest in the classics. Only books I choose to read were how to be a qb or pitch. Not sure I finished them either. But somehow as adult I got into fantasy. Actually read some real books. But got stack of I’d say hundreds to read. Didn’t pay $20 $30 so all good. Thrift stores ebay book store clearance $1 to $5. But I got audible so do the audio books. Love it. I listened to a few of the ex gov super agent or black ops guy stuff too. Like Reacher books and show. Even a lil detective Bosch. Sci-fi works. Liked some star wars books.

What you reading though? Washed just finished Morning glory milking farm and said he loved it so maybe check that out.

Unlike most cities, it’s a pretty sorry time to be a fan of any given local sports team, unless you count the Riverhounds, who won a soccer championship today or Pitt’s women’s volleyball team, that seems to get close to championships every year but, well…
As I said at the time of it happening, my Duquesne Dukes hoop team made it to the big dance a couple years ago for the first time in 47 years and actually won both the A-10 and an NCAA tournament game. Everything since then has been the gravy for me. I don’t expect to ever see another championship team in this town. So be it
That said, of course we keep coming back to Pirates-related article threads here. We’re just happy MLBTR’s staff realizes there is still a baseball team here instead of professional pierogi racers

@AI: Love Pirates fans. I’ve always liked the Pirates—one of my favorite teams to see live in the late 60’s and into the 70’s when I was growing up in Atlanta. Loved their uniforms—-and Willie Stargell, Manny Sanguillen, Al Oliver, Clemente. My father’s 3 favorite players were Roberto Clemente, Bob Gibson, and Eddie Mathews—in that order. First time I ever saw my father cry was when Clemente died on New Year’s Eve in the plane crash in Puerto Rico. Think that was 1972, so I must have just turned 15. I’ll always be a Braves fan, but I don’t root against the Pirates—-unless they’re playing the Braves. Had a girl friend from Maryland in 1979. She was a big O’s fan. I told her when the Pirates got down 3-1 in the Series that the Pirates were gonna come back and win it. Thought she’d never speak to me again when they did. Still wish she hadn’t, lol.

I can’t recommend enough audible. You can’t read when driving or doing work but you can listen. Working out. Doing laundry. Cooking. Some of these narrators are just artist. It’s incredible. It’s like 7 8 bucks a month. Get 1 any book you want a month. Also have sale 2 to 7 bucs a book. Pirates article so did bucs instead of bucks! They say $15 a month but when you go to cancel they give you $7. Also tens of thousands of free books. Lots of meh but found some good ones. Think new members they give you 1 month and 2 books for free.

I used kindle but if I am going to read I want a book and hardcover not paper back. I like history but rather watch documentary. I did listen to Bill O’Reilly confronting the president’s and give it a A+ Pretty much all I wanted to know about every president and for a non history buff pretty much the history of the country. Be a good gift for a kid as they would ace history class with very minimal effort. I probably learned as much or more in that 1 book as everything in grade middle high school university history channel combined.

The langoliers narrated by William Defoe is the greatest performance I ever seen or heard. Maz hr Jordan flu game ac dc downington tom Brady comeback the greatest actors in cinema history. All a complete joke compared to that narration.

Audible too if you don’t like the book they will let you get another.

I’m a pirates fan because I am a pirate. I never paid for music in my life. I don’t see any ads here and not a vip member. I can find these audio books for free but I like the product so much I pay for it. If you knew how cheap I was you would be impressed. You would be scared if you knew how cheap I was.

Watching the Steelers today made me miss baseball and even watching the Pirates. If Shelton was a bad manager, he did it in relatively obscurity. That Tomlin is considered a “good coach” by national media is mind numbing. What a time to be a sports fan in Pittsburgh

I think Mets got better. 2 bad contracts and the Mets exchanged 5 years for 3 years! Big win. Plus easier to get a corner outfielder than a 2b. Mets A Rangers D. Nimmo could age like a fine wine and Semien can always be hurt. Never know. But today I like it.

@AI: One more thing before I leave. Imo, the Mets dealt Nimmo for 2 reasons. First, to save $25M in salary. Second, and most important to them, to make room so they can sign Kyle Tucker. Nimmo’s salary and presence in the outfield were obstacles to the Mets signing Tucker. They opened that up w/this deal. Talk to you later AI.

He needs a change of scenery but this was a good deal for the Pirates and Suwinski.
Something has been off the last couple of years and he has lost confidence but he is still young enough that he could turn it around and for this much money it is worth a chance.
When they waived Canizaro(sp) this signing was in the cards.
He may also be used as a throw in in a deal also.

I do not know whether Hague is any better and sometimes there is a sophomore jinx but Suwinski was even better his second year.

Toasty, Mendoza, here’s my problem with your collective thoughts here. Yes, Haines was an albatross around the necks of batters here. He tinkered with Reynolds. Cruz regressed, if that’s possible.
The problem with a kid like Suwinski is that his mechanics have so many problems, from approach to pitch recognition to general swing mechanics that it’s extremely difficult to turn around in a meaningful way at this level. He had a good season in terms of homers but jeez, look at his K rate and runners LOB.
It’s a lot like Hayes was, only worse. A lot of folks talking about change of scenery but you’re intimating he has all the parts and just needs to get his head right. That’s not the case with Suwinski. It certainly wasn’t with Hayes
I place Davis in that profile however, because management nearly wrecked the kid in his first couple call ups and you see signs that he’s evolving. Small signs, albeit
The problem here starts in the minors, of course. No idea what pssses for being developed enough to come to play here. Where some of these guys are concerned—and again Cruz comes to mind—you watch game in and game out and wonder why so many things they should have known at the PONY League level are mysteries here
Paul could write a book about bunting a guy up as one could about hitting to the opposite field, shortening up to make contact, hit and run, pitch and count recognition et al
I like Jack. and I know they could use his power. I just couldn’t see a resurrected Charley Lau waving a magic wand and getting him to be a much better, more consistent hitter. And I hope I am wrong

He had 1 month where he got more than 32 at bats 86 in May and he hit 279 .326 .407 .733 so the 1 and only month he got playing time was by far his best month and he was a solid contributor.

My concern is that he had not one but two good years off the bat and unexpected but then something happened.
It is a small price to pay for a contract mistake even for the Pirates.
It is a small price to pay for the stupidity of the Pirates management to continue to let him play against lefthanders through both of those first two years.
I know little about hitting mechanics but if they are screwed up now but not then if he gets them straight and his confidence back it would pay big dividends for this contract size.
Just look at it as taking a chance which is something that Cherington needs to do to keep his job.

@Mendoza didn’t play who Canario? He can’t hit a baseball. They changed his plate approach and he was awesome in April even better than he was in May but due to the worst luck I ever seen his stats didn’t show it. Temporary fix though. It cut down drastically like almost in half his strike outs but he still couldn’t hit a baseball. Once he did well and produced teams had to find a way to attack him and they easily did because he can’t hit a baseball. I didn’t say he would be good forever just said he is good now and needs to play until he isn’t and they listened to me. You didn’t see me complaining about his playing time except in April.

They seem to have a couple of guys besides Griffin coming up from the farm—-and who knows if they’ll pan out—but as is, they’re almost obligated to keep him if this is gonna be the typical Pirates offseason

Combination that builds the perfect storm. Coaches who can’t get the most out of players and develop them, and guys who really are average, if that
There’s a reason the Dodgers sent Cruz away and that the Giants dropped Bart. Suwinski, Canario came from elsewhere. Reynolds is the only guy who came from another team and is a “good” player
This then places in the focus on guys who came through the Pirates farm. Nick. That’s all
          Amazing, isn’t it?

Bart’s power output dropping from 2024 to 2025 has to do with his fast swing rate. It was 51% last year, then fell to 42.4% through the All-Star break, then after the break, he broguht it back up to 48.8%, and then he put up a .838 OPS after the break. Faster swings=more power, and he regained that in the second half of the season.

Cruz, I think he gets in his own head. The Pirates offense wa so dismal, there was no reason to give him a hittable pitch, and he saw a lot of pitches outside the zone this year. 55.3% of the pitches he saw this year were outside the zone, only Bryce Harper saw a greater percentage of pitches outside the zone this year. He started swinging at junk in the second half. His chase rate half-way through June was 26.3%, then was 29% after that (league average was 28.1%). Yes , I know, he had the most called K’s this year, but I think that’s part of him getting into his own head. In my opinion when I watched him, it felt like he was going to the plate either in over-drive mode, or completley laid back to a fault; no in-between. It’s like he already had his mind set on what he was gonna do.

Notice how they don’t hit the same amount of hrs every year. Even I can’t predict how many they will hit. Can predict a range but will they get to the high low middle of that range I have no idea. If you do a 10,000 plate appearance model you will have a much better idea. 100,000 even better. A million now you are talking. But 100 500 1000 isn’t eliminating enough luck. But Jack should have had more last year. If he played 20 seasons and hit exactly the same as last year most those seasons he would have more hrs.

Bucs- WashedUpOld Timer is a long time fan who has endured 28 losing seasons in the last 32 years.
He is either stupid or very loyal, just like many of the rest of us.
He has a negative bent accordingly.
          Unfortunately,it is a realistic bent.
Some of the rest of us do not bend quite that strongly, but anyone who has paid attention that long to a normally negative situation deserves whatever current bent he wants to have.
He is like a 38 year old boxer who has taken one too many punches but is still standing.
He remains persistent even though he sometimes does not even remember what his posting name is and has to change it periodically.
I am in the process of responding to a troll like poster in another article.
Myself and two other Pirates posters were troll busters back in the day.
          OldTimer is not a troll.
They are quite easy to detect.
He is like many of us just frustrated with the Pittsburgh Pirates team that we have followed for many many years in the great sport of baseball.

So I try email and it said it worked but checked email and nothing there. 3 days later I get the email but it says link only good for 5 minutes lol. Requested again and again and never got a email sent again. Won’t even try next time just get new name. Then they want upper case lower case numbers special characters. It’s not a bank account. If someone guess my pass and steals my mlbtr name who cares I’ll just get a new one. Pretty certain I am the troll they were warning you not to talk to. I am surprised that they kept Yohan over Dauri and with the six that they brought up they certainly had room for both.
Cherington seems to forget that each one of those six will have to be kept for the whole year on the ML roster.I recall that three should have been kept but the other three clearly do not seem to have a chance at being kept on a ML roster for a whole year.
    Unless it is the Pirates.

Definitley could have kept both, but I sort of get why they chose Moreta over Ramirez. Ramirez has better stuff, but I think Moreta has a better floor. If push came to shove, I would have chosen Moreta personally.

They seem to play favorites with some guys but I guess that’s how it goes when it comes to scouting. Trusting Suwinski and Ramirez over Canario and Moreta. I get where they’re coming from but you can’t always just chalk things up to bad luck. Yes Ramírez has a good K rate, doesn’t automatically mean he’ll turn the corner.

You all cried over Contreras Bolton Brubaker who knows who else. Who knows where the heck they even are. You would think after seeing Skenes Bubba Ashcraft Burrows Jones Lawrence Mattson Santana Oviedo Falter etc you would have a lil confidence in them.

The old Moreta is finished. He can’t throw his best pitch without his arm falling off. Will he do it to stay in the league maybe. Will he be useful doing something else maybe. But Ramirez is the better odds pick. He might be gone as well. Better options might get dfa. There are free agents to sign.

And you are crying for the guy the Royals gave them and Bryan De La Cruz when they could have had a 280 hitter with 70 rbis and 15 home runs per year in RF for two years.
Even Shelton knew that but your buddy Cherington?

Shelton basically said that Andujar was an rbi machine.
Andujar will never be at the same level as his rookie season and will never be an all star.He is at best a reasonably good hitter and decent fielder.
But on the Pirates he would have been the equivalent of Mickey Mantle.

Ramirez has some nasty stuff, even better than Moreta, and realistically speaking, you almost can’t predict reliever performance year-over-year, especially highly volatile arms like Ramirez or Moreta. They’re betting on the better upside with Ramirez, which fair enough. I still like Moreta’s floor more though.

Moreta is in a similar mold as Hunter Stratton and not quite as good as Chase Shugart.
They actually provide good ML depth as opposed to the AAAA pitchers that Cherington has historically trotted out half way through the season.
They do now have a lot of good young pitchers but have several other position players who do not deserve a 40 man roster spot.
At the very least they could prove themselves in the ML’s long enough to become trade bait or as an add on to a more significant traded player.

I completely agree with this. My opinion, on a good team with a good bullpen, Moreta is nothing more than a 6th/7th inning guy or the guy you bring in to keep the game close. That’s his ceiling. That’s also his floor. Ramirez has the chance to be a solid 8th inning guy. I think his stuff is that good. He also has a much higher chance of imploding. So…if this team is truly going to attempt to compete this season, you gotta go with the higher ceiling and hope for the best. Either way, if this team wants to win, neither guy should be pitching in situations hoping for a hold or a save.

Realistically, the difference between Moreta and Ramirez right now is like the difference between the 5th and 6th best reliever on your depth chart. The Pirates are going to choose Santana, Mattson, Lawrence, Mlodzinski, and probably Nicolas over Ramirez, and potentially Moreta, especially after his TJ surgery.

I would like the Bucs to take a flyer on Kyler Fedko in the Rule 5 draft. Our 4th and 5th OFs have been so bad, it’s hard for me to fathom that Fedko could do worse. He might be just another Suwinski – speed, power and great AAA stats that don’t translate – but we’ve seen Suwinkski continually fail. Fedko hasn’t had that opportunity.

I looked into Fedko, but he doesn’t really have as much power as the 28 homers and .487 slugging % may lead you to believe. He had very drastic home/away splits, and a barrel rate under 8%.

You seem to be and or claim to be into analytics. Don’t think you have the mind for it. One of the simplest basic things with analytics is to eliminate the useless data and use the useful. You should have easily figured out what I was talking about. But it’s ok if you didn’t. But like many others on here you are mean rude person. You could have just said I am getting a different number here what am I missing? Instead you just call me liar. Yes like people for some strange reason just go around making up ops numbers! Why would they do this? Would love to know why your mind went there. Yeah you weren’t even part of the conversation and just come in calling me a liar because apparently you think there is some reason someone would just randomly create fake numbers instead of the obvious to a normal person that it was split or they simply typed the wrong thing or was looking at the wrong player. Feel free to go back to muting me anytime you want. I am not missing out on anything conversing with you.

Just because I enjoy the numbers side doesn’t mean I don’t think the human side of the game isn’t important. I think some positions, especially closer and catcher, the human factor is just as important as the overall ability. But I think AI GM is focusing too much on just the numbers side and what FanGraphs/Baseball Savant say, and TheMan3 and OldTimer only ever use the eye test and the most basic statistics.

When I watch Cruz, I see a player who can demolish the baseball, but have an extremely flawed approach at the plate. I see a player who can track down balls in the gap with ease and gun runners out anywhere, but one who let’s the mental side of the game get in his own way.

Am I not allowed to like and believe in Cruz? Am I not allowed to like the big exit velocities, even if he has a bad approach and swing and miss in his game?

Overall, my opinion of the eyetest is that pretty much none of us commenting on here have the credentials to say that our opinion with the eye test is worthwhile. I think only those who have worked in scouting or a similar department with years of experience really know what to look for, eye-test wise. For most of us, we watch it on TV, watch highlights, go to a game from time-to-time, and that’s the most of it. Most of us are not sitting front row, for as many games as possible, wathcing every little detail, then going back through video to analyze even further, like many scouts do. As for Cruz, I don’t know what his character is, and I don’t want to comment on it. I don’t know Cruz personally, and I only have some interviews and how he plays to go off of, so it’s hard for me to make a judgement on his human dynamics to really come to a full-on conclusion, at least in my opinion.

Well the first notification I received and I was actually online when it came up you said this “You’re just making up numbers now. He had a .709 OPS in 2022 and a .793 OPS in 2023.” So that’s first I received and first I replied to. Logical as it was your highest up comment and most people start from the top vs the bottom.

It’s all good though. I wasn’t offended the slightest. I can’t envision any scenario that would offend me. I like to put on a lil show for our members. I don’t focus that much on numbers. Only if it’s faster to get information that can be obtained by numbers or it’s someone I am not familiar with and can’t find enough video or too lazy I use numbers. My projection system is so superior to any other system I am aware of because it’s a hybrid of scouting and analytics. It’s weakness is finding scouts who are good enough and willing to work with analytics. A team wouldn’t have this issue or easier to overcome.

Also when Davis was drafted I said he can’t catch but everything I seen and heard was he is highly motivated and could improve. Same with KG swing. If someone works hard and or is heavy into analytics and or technology science I factor that it.

If Suwinski could’ve put up numbers like his first two seasons during the last two seasons, they would’ve been in better position to win more games with the pitching they have over last two seasons. On the offensive side, the team was probably better in 2022 and 2023 than 2024 and 2025.

Well his .168 batting average over the last two years probably has a little something to do with that. But just keep running him out there maybe he’ll hit .180 this year and surprise them

I know, evidently only seven at bats.
But their continued persistence his first two years at playing him against lefthanders severely watered down his stats, and he even hit a fair amount against them in 2024.
As you are well aware Cherington evidently did not know that Jack should have been platooned even though certain posters on MLBTR thought that he should be.
He should have been paying attention to the comments on this website much earlier.

@Mendoza Line 215 Didn’t know or Didn’t care! Winning never appeared important to Cherington imo so I could see hey just keep letting him try at mlb level even though he struggles.

The team was better offensively in 2023 than in 2025. In 2023, all 5 hitters on the Pirates with at least 400 plate appearances had a better-than-average OPS+.

@TheMan 3 You could be incorrect there. It would depend on the size of the wings etc. If anything with wings could fly the Dodo might still be around. Pigs tend to have more fat. Birds and pigs have different bone structures so would take some pretty serious wings for them to fly.

@TheMan 3 Even then there are dozens and dozens of birds that can’t fly.

What about non birds? Many insects fly. True but I believe pigs weigh more than insects and again body structure. Mammals can fly. Bats are mammals. True again. But I would consider bats closer to birds than pigs in body built for flight. Sifaka fly! Technically they glide. Flying squirrels got ya now. Nope. Again glide. Very misinformation name. They should be called gliding squirrels I say.

What about the pigs flying? Still convinced they would if they had wings? I don’t think they would. Maybe if they had like hawkman wings but that’s a comic book character. Real world science makes me think these piggies are grounded.

Come on Paul. Even a no nonsense guy like yourself had to chuckle just a tiny bit at that one eh? I can hear Brownie now. Cruz has a wingspan at 107 inches which gives him a top flight speed of 236 mph. Both of those rank #1 in all of baseball.

          And “who cares about Cruz?”
He’s supposed to be the face of the franchise. Or one of them
His lack of hustle is one thing but can anyone tell us if he’s putting in off season work on his batting and fielding?
They need this guy to hit 25 homers or so. They need a better in base percentage.
I’m counting on the Pirates doing little this offseason. And as such, this guy has to do more

His 0 outs above average says he’s okay, not great, which I think is a much mroe accurate assessment than his error total. A presence of errors does not mean one is a bad fielder, just as a lack of errors does not mean one is a good fielder. Cruz is far from perfect, but I’d much rather have him than Castellanos’ 3 error since 2022.

I would have more faith in Barry Bonds throwing out Sid Bream at home plate than I would have in O’Neil Cruz throwing out anybody at any base.

MLB-Accuracy and Cruz should never be used in the same sentence.
His arm strength, like his sometime hit speed are impressive, but neither is very substantial regarding consistency or accuracy.
They may be impressive to some but I will take professional consistency any day of the week.

Even that is an over pay for Suwinski. Time to move on from him. There has to be better choices even on the waiver wire. There have been many players who have had 1 or 2 decent seasons that never repeat their earlier success.
John Nogowski had a red hot July back in 2021 where he batted over .300, maybe we should bring him back also and see if he can do that again for another month.

Read Madden’s column in today’s Tribune Online. Once again, he characterizes the Pirates under Nutting perfectly. The article here and the rumor from Passan emanate from the Pirates PR pros and nothing more. The franchise is a joke. And for good measure, he laughs at the Suwinski signing, too

These are minimal mlb contracts by today’s standards. Should allow them to be waived to AAA as depth players if better options are available. Doubt anyone would claim either one. Jack is the backup CF with Canario gone, and Ramirez is a decent middle reliever who can go higher leverage in a pinch. Wish mlb would allow veteran depth players with no options left to be sent down without going through waivers – would allow teams to retain depth and give players a little stability.

    Good luck

I think someone, after 2023, screwed with his hitting. They try to do their magic on young kids. Unfortunately most hitting coaches have unremarkable ML experience.
