April 10th: The Yanks have made it official, announcing that Gil has been recalled and Winquest has been designated for assignment.
April 9th: The Yankees are designating Rule 5 pick Cade Winquest for assignment, reports Jon Heyman of The New York Post. The righty didn’t get into a game during his two weeks in New York’s bullpen.
That’ll evidently be the corresponding move for tomorrow’s recall of Luis Gil. Manager Aaron Boone said over the weekend that the Yankees would bring Gil up this week. He’s listed as the probable starter opposite Steven Matz for Friday’s series opener against the Rays. The 13-pitcher limit meant an arm from the MLB roster had to be squeezed out.
The Yankees had the luxury of running a four-man rotation for the first couple weeks based on their number of available off days. Gil joins Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Will Warren and Ryan Weathers in the rotation. They needed to drop from nine to eight in the bullpen. Brent Headrick has pitched too well to be sent down. Jake Bird has been sharp as well aside from one ugly outing against Miami on Sunday. Fernando Cruz and Camilo Doval are their only other relievers with minor league options.
Rather than option a more trusted reliever in Bird, the Yankees move on from Winquest. The 25-year-old didn’t have a great spring, allowing nine runs (eight earned) with eight strikeouts and four walks across 10 innings. It was a surprise that he broke camp at all.
The Yankees clearly liked some of what they saw but didn’t find a scenario where Boone felt comfortable bringing him into a regular season game. Teams generally use Rule 5 picks as low-leverage relievers, especially early in the season before they’ve gained a manager’s trust. All four of New York’s losses have been by one run, games in which they could certainly have come back. They’ve had three blowout wins, but two came behind long outings from Fried and one followed an off day so the rest of the bullpen was fresh.
They’ll have five days to trade Winquest or place him on waivers. If he goes unclaimed, he’ll be offered back to the Cardinals. The former eighth-round pick had previously spent his entire career in the St. Louis organization. He has worked as a minor league starting pitcher and combined for a 3.99 ERA across 106 innings between High-A and Double-A last year. Unless another team is willing to keep him on the MLB roster, he’ll head back to his original club without requiring a spot on the 40-man roster for St. Louis.

I was a fan of Winquest. I thought he was going to be good but not good enough for the Yankees!
Sorry Inquest, we hardly knew you. Hope you have a lot of success wherever you go next.
What an oddity. How the heck did Boone npt use him even one time???
I see so far only one game on Apr. 3rd where Boone could’ve used him in a low-leverage situation. The other games, the starters went deep and other better releevers needed the work.
You dont take a Rule V without ever expecting him to pitch in a mid/high leverage situation. The season is too long.
Oh well. 🤗
Yankees gave this dude 2 weeks of service time and said cya
You act like they did him a favor. Sure they did.
Two weeks is a tiny fraction of one year (14/172), which is just a fraction of six years until Free Agency. I’d more than bet he’d have preferred to not be uprooted and have to move to new environments twice in 2 months.
Crazy talk. 2 weeks of MLB pay is about 30k plus now he’s eligible for that awesome healthcare for life
He gets healthcare for life for two weeks of work? lol.
Yes he’s eligible for the MLB players group policy. It’s not free but it’s super cheap and robust coverage. But you don’t seem to want answers just to be a D-bag it seems…
Im just saying no teams is doing a player any favors in this situation. Displacing him for 5 months, risking injuries, and not even giving him any big league innings. I suppose you dont like those “answers”. Yankees havent had 12 one-run games, give the guy a shot. Or is he already damaged goods? Also, Im not the one calling people D-Bags. Youve got plenty of mirrors at home, how about you look a little deeper.
Getting that first day of service time is HUGE. Yeah no team is handing out favors but that 1 day alone changes his life for the better. I’m sure he’d have loved to pitch but he’s now a member of the MLB union. If you don’t understand how valuable that is I can’t help you.
I don’t think it’s for life? Wasn’t the story with Sal Fasano that the Jays kept re-signing him and calling him up for one day just so he could get health care for his son? and the recent story that Andrew Toles was no longer eligible?
I double checked with AI, and yes, you are eligible for life once you spend 1 day on an active roster. You have to pay for it but it’s sweet group coverage and better than you’re going to get on your own. The more service time you have the more of a subsidy you get on the premiums. I’m not sure the story about Fasano, maybe it’s free for the year if you log one day of service time in that year.
Uprooted? You really think a minor leaguer is worried about relocating to a major league franchise. Senseless criticism.
He’ll have a fun story to tell the grandkids one day.
All four of their losses have been by 1 run each. Their wins have been mostly close victories. Nine man bullpen. Pretty obvious why he wasn’t used yet. Hopefully he gets another chance to make his MLB debut in the future.
very true but 2 of fried’s starts was 5+ runs by mid game and ended in shutout … perfect time to give the kid the 8th and/or 9th to save some of those arms.
True, but in fairness one of those games had Yarbrough finish the game because that was his first appearance of the season. He’s only been in two games total. There was probably one, max two, opportunities for Boone to use Winquest and he opted for someone else for whatever reason. Hopefully he gets another shot
I mean he got paid so he’s definitely not complaining but why have him if you aren’t going to use him might as well have called up Kervin Castro.
Because the team ERA is less than 2.50.
He will turn 26 later this month and only has eight games at the AA level. This year, Winquest was never likely to be part of a quest for winning.
Unlike say Ty Cobb who loved soccer
Thanks for a little corn on the Cobb.
Sucks for Winquest but at least he got two weeks of big league pay.
The good news was he wasn’t needed even with Cole and Rodon out and the team is 8-4. The team is averaging 4.5 runs per game but they need to win the close games like tonight.
His name is still apt.
So why’d they play with a de facto 25-man roster for two weeks? Also wonder how much the Cards have been expecting Winquest’s return. They probably knew it was likely. Hope he goes unclaimed and can start for Memphis or Springfield, though I don’t know whose rotation spot he takes. Memphis already has started 6 guys.
cade destroymysporclescorequest
Isn’t he a character on Downton Abbey? The name would suggest it.
I’m totally good with the Cubs claiming Winquest.
What is the waiver fee for adding him?
The Yankees are deep with pitching, there defense is strong for the most part throughout but yet again this lineup has way too much swing and miss and can’t manufacture runs which finds them constantly in and out of team slumps. They need more consistent contact bats. That means until Lombard and Volpe both are ready to help either as starting SS and 3rd or as super utility down stretch run, maybe they can deal one of Jazz or McMahon since they both cannot figure out how to put the ball in play and replace them with a high contact bat like Matt Shaw. Also trade Grisham and move Grichuk off the roster and call up Dominguez and Jones by July 1st. They need to infuse athletic young talent that can run and bring some excitement since the contact bats are not in the organization.
I can see a team like the white sox take a flyer on him , try him out for a few weeks and see how much of the Yankees pitching lab has he absorbed, league minimum for 2 or 3 weeks is nothing to a team yet beneficial to him
Reasonable call
They opened the season with 4 starters, he was there as long relief emergency. Gil is back up in the rotation, so he’s no longer needed. Thanks for showing up, good luck moving forward.
Never really understood taking him when Yankees won’t give their own minor league relievers a chance (Castro, Cohen, DeLos Santos).
Headrick only made it because they used the 4 man rotation. He was much more deserving than either Winquest or Blackburn.
I would like to see the Yankees DFA Ryan McMahon. I know that a pitcher’s spot needed to be cleared for Gil, but he looks washed. He is the next to receive the DJLM/Aaron Hicks treatment.
Yanke were just holding out for a better chance at him passing through waivers. The only thing that would have saved him is Bird or Headrick blowing up since they still have options. Chances are he goes unclaimed and it’s whether or not the Cards want to pay $50k for him.
Looking forward to watching Cade’s Yankeeography on the YES Network.
Camilo Doval has been a awful pitcher, yet he is still here.
Cade’s quest for a win is temporarily thwarted.
