Odds & Ends: Zambrano, Royals, Phils

By Eddie Schmid | August 11, 2009 at 6:17pm CDT

Game time? It's time for some more links, me thinks:

  • Anthony Castrovince at MLB.com pays tribute to Hall-of-Fame reporter Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News, who will soon be out of a job.
  • Dick Kaegel at MLB.com says that the Royals are still negotiating with their top picks, despite reports they had come to terms with their second- and fourth-round selections.
  • David Kaplan at ChicagoNow stakes the claim that Carlos Zambrano is the most overpaid player in baseball. Jorge Says No! says, well… no.
  • Jame Moyer has been sent to the bullpen in favor of Pedro Martinez, and he isn't happy. The ageless Moyer claims he was assured by GM Ruben Amaro before he signed a two-year deal that this "type of situation would not happen," reports Andy Martino at the Philadelphia Inquirer.
  • Henry Schulman at the San Francisco Chronicle asks fans if they'd let Barry Zito go on a waiver claim. Easy call, right? Schulman offers up some bullet points to consider before you answer.

Odds And Ends: Sano, Red Sox, Pedro

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 10, 2009 at 4:54pm CDT

Another round of links for the afternoon…

  • ESPN.com's Jorge Arangure Jr. says the Angels looked at Miguel Angel Sano, but aren't close to offering the Dominican shortstop prospect a deal.
  • Alex Speier of WEEI.com reports that the Red Sox signed Jason Thompson, their 11th round pick, for $300k. The team also appears to be on its way to signing 10th rounder Brandon Jacobs for second-round money.
  • Ben Klayman of Reuters reports that at least a third of MLB teams will send out send out season ticket renewal offers earlier than usual to keep revenues flowing.
  • As MLB.com's Todd Zolecki notes, Pedro Martinez will start for the Phillies Wednesday and bump Jamie Moyer to the bullpen.

Odds And Ends: Rios, Mets, Pirates, V-Mart

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 10, 2009 at 10:58am CDT

A variety of links to look at this morning…

  • The Blue Jays have until 12:30 CST tomorrow to deal Alex Rios, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com.
  • Matt Cerrone of MetsBlog considers possible replacements for current Mets GM Omar Minaya.
  • Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says the Pirates will have to be something more than an "unmitigated disaster" for Neal Huntington's moves to start looking good, since the GM obtained half the team's roster in recent trades.
  • Victor Martinez tells Steve Buckley of the Boston Herald that he's looking forward to his first home game as a member of the Red Sox.
  • John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer shows that the Reds' moves impacted players personally and professionally.
  • Baseball America's Conor Glassey  reports that the Phillies signed third rounder Kyrell Hudson to an over-slot bonus worth about $475k.

Could Nomar Fit In Philly?

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 10, 2009 at 9:01am CDT

When asked if he'd accept a deal to the Phillies, Nomar Garciaparra said "Sure, why not?" according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle  The Phillies are looking for a right-handed bench bat and they had interest in Garciaparra in the offseason. The 36-year-old is hitting .265/.300/.372 and his base salary is just $1MM.

Odds & Ends: Tate, Phillies, Pirates, Indians

By Mike Axisa | August 8, 2009 at 8:24pm CDT

Links? You can't handle the links!

  • ESPN's Jason Churchill notes that third overall pick Donovan Tate was expected to report to UNC's football camp today, and that the Padres are "mum on the negotiations between Tate's adviser, Scott Boras, and the club." If he doesn't sign, Tate will play both football and baseball for the Tar Heels.
  • Peter Gammons of ESPN writes about the Phillies and the rotation depth they've build this year. It seems like whenever we hear a team has pitching depth, it disappears. It's like the Madden cover curse, but crueler.
  • Pirates skipper John Russell admits that his club will "have to look to find a left-hander to solidify [the bullpen], either this season or in time for next season," reports John Perrotto of PiratesReport.com. The Bucs haven't had a southpaw in the pen since trading John Grabow to the Cubs at the deadline.
  • Terry Pluto of The Cleveland Plain Dealer writes that even though the Indians recent moves were driven by money, they still made sense for the organization.

Rosenthal’s Full Count Video: Rios, Mulder, Moyer, Masterson

By Mike Axisa | August 8, 2009 at 5:27pm CDT

Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com has a new Full Count video up. Let's dive in…

  • Whatever the Blue Jays do with Alex Rios will tell us everything we need to know about the team's financial state and their opinion of Rios. Toronto could shed more than $60MM in obligation by letting the claiming team have him.
  • Some executives believe Rios still has some trade value, and if the Jays wait until the offseason they'd be able to negotiate with all 29 other clubs. The problem is that the free agent market will again be flooded with outfielders.
  • Free agent southpaw Mark Mulder could be throwing for teams within 7-10 days. Mulder is working with Rick Peterson, his former pitching coach, in New Jersey this weekend, The pair recently corrected a "minor mechanical flaw," and Peterson told Mulder's agent Greg Clifton that he was shocked the pitcher was in such good shape.
  • Teams are looking at Mulder for September, with the Yankees, Brewers, Dodgers and Rangers are among the cubs that have expressed interest. Just as a reminder, if Mulder joins a big league team after August 31st, he would be ineligible for the playoff roster.
  • Forget about all that talk from Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. about going with a six-man rotation, Jamie Moyer will "almost certainly" head to the bullpen once Pedro Martinez is ready. The team just hasn't figured out how to break the news yet.
  • Justin Masterson was throwing 93-97 in his first appearance with Cleveland, causing some club officials to wonder if he should be a closer down the line. Short term, the Indians need him in the rotation and he has the everything needed to become a third or fourth starter.

Phillies Cut Ties With Ozuna

By | August 8, 2009 at 3:14pm CDT

According to Scott Lauber of the Wilmington Journal, the Phillies have released 34-year-old infielder Pablo Ozuna.

Ozuna was batting .294/.342/.396 with no home runs and 15 RBI in 187 at-bats at Triple-A Lehigh Valley before he was suspended for a positive PED test in June.  He appeared in 68 major league games last season during stays with the White Sox and Dodgers.

Odds And Ends: Wagner, Red Sox, Scherzer

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 7, 2009 at 9:48am CDT

An assortment of links to get the day started…

  • Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News hears that one AL contender has at least some interest in adding Billy Wagner for the stretch run. The lefty makes $10.5MM this year and has a $1MM buyout for 2010, so Wagner seems likely to clear waivers.
  • Rubin says the Mets won't likely offer Wagner or Carlos Delgado arbitration after the season.
  • As Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports, Max Scherzer uses some pretty advanced stats to judge his performances.
  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post hears that the Yanks and Padres almost completed the Chad Gaudin trade before the deadline. When Kenny Williams called about the Jake Peavy deal, Towers had to ignore Cashman, but the teams struck a deal in the end.
  • Danny Knobler of CBS Sports says one look at John Smoltz's face suggests he may be done.
  • Yahoo's Gordon Edes says Smoltz looked like a "pitcher turned pinata" last night.
  • Sam Donnellon of the Philadelphia Inquirer says Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. looks pretty smart right now.

Odds And Ends: Colon, Lee, Bedard, Ligtenberg

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 6, 2009 at 4:03pm CDT

More links for the afternoon…

  • If you don't already know which three major leaguers have weight or fitness-related clauses in their contracts, check out Jorge Says No! to find out.
  • Marc Hulet of FanGraphs says the Blue Jays acquired two of the top ten prospects moved this deadline. He ranks Zach Stewart 8th and Josh Roenicke 10th among all prospects dealt.
  • The White Sox don't know where Bartolo Colon is, according to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times.
  • Via Twitter, Ed Price of AOL FanHouse informs us that Phillies' acquisition Cliff Lee has allowed four runners past first base in 16 innings with his new team. Not bad.
  • Larry LaRue of the Tacoma News Tribune says there's a good chance Erik Bedard will need another exploratory surgery after he undergoes an MRI tomorrow.
  • Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus reports that former MLB reliever Kerry Ligtenberg retired. He had been pitching in an independent league.

Which Teams Took On Salary At The Deadline?

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 3, 2009 at 12:41pm CDT

As the trade deadline approached, we heard many writers and executives suggest teams would be unable to add payroll this year. Here's a breakdown of the teams that added at least $1MM in salary to their 2009 payrolls this summer. All totals are approximate:

  • The Cardinals added $2.9MM to the team's payroll when they traded for Mark DeRosa and $3.7MM when they added Matt Holliday for a total of $6.6MM.
  • The Red Sox added $4.5MM between the Victor Martinez and Adam LaRoche deals.
  • Acquiring Jarrod Washburn added about $3.6MM to the Tigers' payroll.
  • The White Sox added $2.8MM in salary when they made the Jake Peavy deal.
  • The Giants added $2.1MM in the Freddy Sanchez trade.
  • The Phillies added $2MM in the Cliff Lee deal.
  • The Rockies added $1.9MM in the Rafael Betancourt and Joe Beimel deals.
  • The Brewers took on $1.4MM by dealing for Felipe Lopez.
  • The Braves took on $1.3MM to add Nate McLouth.
  • The Twins added $1.25MM in salary by trading for Orlando Cabrera.
  • They didn't take on much salary, but between the Eric Hinske deal and the Jerry Hairston Jr. acquisition, the Yanks added $1.1MM.
  • The Dodgers added about $1MM when they dealt for George Sherrill.

In total, 12 teams added payroll, but only one took on more than $5MM. The prognosticators were right about one thing: teams didn't take on much payroll. However, few predicted 12 teams would take on salary at the deadline. Looks like many teams set economic concerns aside when presented with the chance to win.
