Jason Adam Likely Headed For Season-Ending Quad Surgery

By Anthony Franco | September 1, 2025 at 10:12pm CDT

10:12pm: Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune writes that Adam will undergo season-ending surgery if a follow-up MRI confirms the initial diagnosis. The hope is that he’ll be able to return some time around the beginning of the 2026 season.

9:42pm: Padres reliever Jason Adam has been diagnosed with a tendon rupture in his left quad, manager Mike Shildt tells reporters (including Dennis Lin of The Athletic). Shildt didn’t specify a recovery timeline or whether surgery will be required. It’s nevertheless difficult to imagine Adam will be back this season.

Adam was carted off the Petco Park mound during this evening’s loss to the Orioles (video via Talkin’ Baseball). Gunnar Henderson hit a chopper up the middle. The ball was a little behind the right-handed Adam, who naturally pulls toward first base on the follow-through in his delivery. Adam appeared to try to plant and change direction to field the ball when his left leg gave out. The injury had some similarities to the one suffered by Giants starter Landen Roupp, who hurt his knee (coincidentally also in San Diego) while trying to dodge a comeback line drive two weeks ago.

Both pitchers end up being carted off the field. Roupp got relatively good news, as he escaped structural damage — though he did suffer a bone bruise that’ll likely end his season. Adam’s injury unfortunately seems more serious. It’ll also be a much more significant development on the playoff picture. The Friars trail the Dodgers by 2.5 games in the NL West. They’re in possession of the National League’s second Wild Card spot and six games clear of the top non-playoff team.

Adam was a journeyman depth reliever throughout his 20s. He suffered a gruesome left ankle fracture while with the Cubs’ Triple-A affiliate in 2021. It was remarkable that he got back on a mound just four months later. Adam had a breakout showing with the Rays the following season. He has been one of the best and most durable relievers in MLB over the past four years.

Since the start of 2022, Adam ranks sixth in the majors with 262 appearances. His 2.04 earned run average is fourth among relievers with 100+ innings in that stretch (trialing Emmanuel Clase, Brusdar Graterol and Félix Bautista). Only Tyler Rogers and Bryan Abreu have more holds, and Adam has also collected 24 saves in that time.

Adam has continued to produce since the Padres acquired him from Tampa Bay at the ’24 trade deadline. He took a 1.81 ERA and above-average 26% strikeout rate into tonight’s appearance. He’s the team leader in holds (29) and relief innings (64 2/3). Only closer Robert Suarez has entered in higher leverage situations on average. Losing Adam will be a big hit in the postseason, though the Padres still have an enviable group of back-end arms. The Mason Miller deadline swing takes on added importance. Suarez remains an asset in the ninth inning, while Adrian Morejon and Jeremiah Estrada are high-end setup arms.

The Padres have Adam under arbitration control for one more season. He’ll be due a decent raise on this year’s $4.8MM salary if they tender him a contract. That’d remain a bargain if he were healthy, but it’d be a tougher call if this injury winds up threatening a chunk of his 2026 season. That prognosis won’t be clear until the organization provides a return timeline. The Padres could lose Suarez to an opt-out clause this winter, and it’s possible they plan to give Miller a look as a starting pitcher next spring.

This is terrible news. I want the Dodgers to win the NL West, but I never actively root for injuries and I certainly don’t take any pleasure in them. Jason Adam is a huge piece of that extremely good San Diego bullpen, and all serious injuries suck, but they’re especially awful when they’re this close to the postseason.

    Sorry Padres fans.

I feel like the vast majority of people here are true ball knowers and enjoyers and feel this same way, and wish perhaps losses, but not injury upon their favorite team’s rivals. Even if that player refused to wear a pride patch when on the Rays.

And no one should ever be compelled to wear such a thing. Some people are just never going to endorse that lifestyle and people like you are just going to have to get over it. Tolerate it, even. Funny how that works, isn’t it?

I’d argue that patches are extremely divisive. Everyone is against cancer, but do we want people wearing Israel/Gaza patches?

He should be free to decline wearing a “pride” patch. Many players and fans believe there’s no room in professional sports for political agendas.

You don’t really mean that. He’s just a one inning reliever and instead of 6 high leverage bullpen arms , they have five now. I think they’ll survive. It’s not they lost a Wheeeler.

That sucks. Especially at a time when the starting pitching outside of Pivetta has a hard time getting past the fourth. I really wish they hadn’t traded Bergert, they could have used him now. Fermin is not good on either side of the ball.
It’s strange that they were up among the top teams in slug last year, but this year they can’t score unless they string together 3-4 singles.
I usually go by the mantra don’t get too high don’t get too low, but I don’t have much confidence in the team overall right now.

Instead of Miller; Preller should have traded DeVries for a starter. Like Joe Ryan or somebody.

    Well CRRRRRAAAAAAAAP!!!

Was never “happy” about the Dodgers injuries, but was glad it wasn’t happening to us. Now the Dodgers are getting healthyish and we’re getting dinged up. Plus we can’t get a starter through five innings. With the exception of King, it’s time to give our starters the ball and tell them they’re giving us six. No matter how many pitches it takes or runs they give up. We’re KILLING our bullpen!

Tough break for Jason Adam, the Padres and their fans.
Wish him a full and complete recovery and a healthy and successful career going forward!
As the old saying goes, you can never have too much pitching.

As I stated at the time, Preller and Padres gave a massive overpay for 2nd string back up catcher Freddie Fermin.

They gave up 2 young starters that they need now for this 2025 pennant race who were the present and future of their ballclub and helped overcome injuries in their starting rotation
for a 2nd string catcher who hits a little better than what they already had?!

When Salas is ready in ’26 or early ’27, Fermin will return to back up catcher status.

    1) Ryan Bergert 2-1 2.67 ERA 1.109 WHIP 12 starts 2025
    2) Stephen Kolek 4-5 3.99 ERA 1.261 WHIP 15 starts 2025

The Royals thank the Padres for putting them back into the Wild Card Race

No other team was bidding for Freddie Fermin.
AJ Preller and the Padres were bidding against themselves.
They could have offered some other players for Fermin or at least kept either (Bergert preferably) or Kolek and offered an alternative 2nd player or both of those players and substituted other minor league players.

AJ Preller thinks he can rely on Nestor Cortez for #5 starter?

Cortez is giving up 5-6 runs in the first 2-3 innings in games and costing the Padres valuable wins that they need for playoffs positioning

Cortez 2-4 6.33 ERA 1.63 WHIP and he belongs in AAA not starting for a potential playoffs team.

Would rather see JP Sears or just about any of the other Padres depth starters than Cortez who clearly is not the answer.

The Padres team is suffering through the dog days of Summer and early Fall. They need a “shake up” or they could blow their playoffs spot.

And the Mason Miller trade is not looking so good either.
Padres gave up three more of their young starting pitching depth starters
Braden Nett, Henry Baez, and Eduarniel Núñez plus their top rated SS prospect De Vries for what?!
They get a duplicate closer Mason Miller to pitch as a 1 inning set up guy and a #5 starter who was not as good as they other #5’s and backup starters that they traded away?! That trade has always looked like a trade for 2026 and not the 2025 Pennant race.

Some of AJ Preller “fantasy baseball” moves for an actual Major league franchise are not looking so good to many.

The Orioles deal is producing results so far for the Padres.

Easy for you to say when your Brewers have made all the right moves and may be on their way to a 100+ win season.

Cracks me up when MLBTR was setup as a baseball discussion of transactions and issues and some people on this forum cop an attitude and try to act like they are “the thought police” and how dare other baseball fans discuss AJ Preller and the Padres Trade Deadline moves
Especially if they don’t agree with them.
      Very childish,

If you don’t care to discuss these real, impactful issues, then don’t comment at all (or if you have nothing to say or add to the discussion).

We can all do better without the snarky responses and attitude.

Dylan Cease and Michael King Trade rumors were getting something like 500 responses at times and neither of those players were traded.
But, lots of fans found it very interesting and worth discussing.

Preller’s controversial moves: s0me good, some open to debate by reasonable minds, and some bad moves should be analyzed on a baseball forum. That is the purpose of such a forum.

Unless you are some secret account for Tim Dierkes (Owner of MLBTR) then, who cares if you don’t want to discuss something.
Move on to the next topic without all the snark.

What the heck is this meltdown? “Oy vey” is a fine reaction to this news. This is literally the definition.

        1) Used to express irritation, dismay, sorrow, or self-pity.

        2)”Oh dear”

It sounds like you just wanted to pop off.
