Odds And Ends: Redding, Aurilia, Mariners

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 3, 2009 at 2:12pm CDT

More links for Wednesday…

  • There's a question worth asking on NorthJersey.com: Are Tim Redding's Mets days numbered?
  • Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that Rich Aurilia doesn't concern himself with murmurs that his job is not secure.
  • Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times believes the Mariners should hold on to their talent and try to win this year.
  • The Cardinals signed a prospect named Adriano Uribe according to MLB.com. There's very little info available, but we do know that he's tall, left-handed and just turned 20.
  • The Baltimore Sun reports that Chad Moeller, who was designated for assignment last week, cleared waivers and will head to Triple A Norfolk.

Chad Moeller Designated For Assignment

By Tim Dierkes | May 29, 2009 at 2:07pm CDT

According to a press release, the Orioles designated backup catcher Chad Moeller for assignment to make room for super-prospect Matt Wieters.  Moeller, 34, hit .200/.259/.360 in 54 plate appearances.  But more importantly, it's Wieters Time!

On a related note, Tom Tango asked today:

Please, just one time I’d like to hear an honest reason for why star players are being held back.  Just once.

Matt Wieters Update

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 8, 2009 at 10:54am CDT

Matt Wieters began the season as baseball's number one prospect, but we haven't heard much about him so far in 2009. Some took notice when he missed a bit of time because of a hamstring issue, but his season at AAA Norfolk has mostly been quiet. He's played well, though not incredibly, hitting one homer and batting .297/.391/.405 with 12 walks and 17 strikeouts. Gregg Zaun and Chad Moeller have combined for only 21 hits in 100 at bats for the O's, so they're not blocking Wieters' path. His main obstacle is time.

  • If the Orioles called Wieters up today, he'd accumulate enough service time this year (almost 150 days) to become a Super Two player. This means he'd cost the Orioles more money in the future because he'd go to arbitration four times.
  • If they wait until June 1st to call Wieters up, he won't accumulate more than 126 days service time. This would likely prevent him from becoming a Super Two and would likely save the Orioles millions of dollars in years ahead.
  • Waiting until June 1st or later also allows the Orioles to make sure Wieters is ready for the majors when he arrives. They can endure their soft-hitting catchers this year, because they're not a contender, so it would be a surprise to see the prospect called up soon.

Odds and Ends: Sheets, Moeller, Yankees

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 13, 2008 at 11:24am CDT

Links for Saturday…

  • As more teams lock up lefty relievers, Jon Paul Morosi sees the Tigers as more likely to land Joe Beimel.
  • Tom Haudricourt has heard that Ben Sheets is more likely to sign with the Rangers, who have Mike Maddux campaigning for them, than the Yankees.
  • Peter Schmuck hears that the Orioles have signed catcher Chad Moeller to a minor league deal.
  • Ken Davidoff writes that the Yankees shouldn’t concern themselves with Andy Pettitte just yet.
  • Dave Perkins of the Toronto Star doesn’t like the Yankees’ aggressive spending.
  • Jack Curry of the New York Times writes that the Yankees are instant favorites for the World Series.
  • Another New York Times writer, Ben Shpigel, writes that the Mets especially need Oliver Perez now that the Phillies have signed Raul Ibanez.
  • RotoAuthority breaks down the re-vamped San Francisco bullpen for fantasy baseball purposes.
  • Matt Clement’s optimistic about his fresh start with the Jays.
  • Two players re-signed with their clubs after being non-tendered: Norris Hopper of the Reds and Scott Mathieson of the Phils.
  • Hideki Okajima will run a marathon Sunday, and the Red Sox aren’t thrilled.

Odds and Ends: Posada, Uribe, Wise, Red Sox

By Sarah Green | May 31, 2008 at 4:39pm CDT

Today’s links…

  • Jorge Posada could rejoin the Yankees as early as Wednesday (a few reports suggested Tuesday). Kat O’Brien of Newsday says the Yanks will hold on to both Jose Molina and Chad Moeller for "a while" after Posada returns, but as Peter Abraham points out on the LoHud Yankees blog, the Yankees have a real need for a set-up man now that Joba Chamberlain is starting.
  • Juan Uribe has been activated from the 15-day DL, and although Ozzie Guillen said he wasn’t guaranteed  playing time, they had to make room on the roster nonetheless.  DeWayne Wise was designated for assigment.
  • The news that Clay Buchholz has been optioned to Pawtucket comes as a shock to yours truly, but it underscores just how much starting pitching the Red Sox have right now, even with Daisuke Matsuzaka currently on the 15-day DL. Free agent pickup Bartolo Colon has worked out so far as a low-risk, high-reward signing. They’ve also got a good spot-starter in Justin Masterson, currently in Double A. And as if that weren’t enough, Curt Schilling could start throwing off a mound June 6. The odd man out could bring something useful in a trade. Just idle speculation, and I know there’s no such thing as too much pitching…but the Red Sox do have some holes to fill.

Odds and Ends: Morris, Moeller, de la Rosa

By Tim Dierkes | April 30, 2008 at 9:07am CDT

Let’s kick things off with an odds and ends post today.  By the way did anyone watch Max Scherzer’s debut last night?  Damn.

  • Dejan Kovacevic notes that even if Matt Morris considered retiring and abandoning his ’08 salary, the Players Association would’ve strongly objected.
  • Rays Senior VP of Baseball Ops Gerry Hunsicker indicates that the team will spend money to improve the team if they’re still contending a few months from now.
  • According to Jon Heyman, catcher Chad Moeller will remain with the Yankees.
  • Another fine piece from Bob Nightengale of USA Today (hat tip to ShysterBall).  The article discusses the pros and cons of young players leaving money on the table in exchange for security.
  • The Rockies may complete their long-rumored Jorge de la Rosa acquisition.  The Rox have question marks in the rotation after Aaron Cook and Jeff Francis.
  • Good point from Ken Davidoff – the Phil Hughes/Johan Santana question can’t be answered yet.
