Joe Barlow Undergoes Minor Wrist Surgery

By Simon Hampton | November 4, 2022 at 5:46pm CDT

Rangers reliever Joe Barlow has undergone a minor surgery to separate two tendons in his right wrist, according to Kennedi Landry of MLB.com. Barlow is expected to be ready by spring training. The issue contributed to the blister issues that affected the right hander throughout the season, and landed him on the IL twice.

An eleventh round pick in the 2016 draft, Barlow threw 35 innings out of the Rangers bullpen in 2022, pitching to a 3.86 ERA. That was a decent drop from his rookie campaign in 2021, when Barlow pitched to a 1.55 ERA over 29 innings, though the blister problems may well have played a significant part in that. While Barlow’s walk rate remained steady, his strikeout rate dipped (24.3% to 19.2%) and his home run rate increased (0.6 HR/9 to 1.3 HR/9).

He had earned the team’s closer role to start the campaign, and converted 13 of 17 save opportunities, but was demoted from the role shortly before landing on the IL in July. The Rangers will hope the surgery alleviates those blister problems, and allows Barlow to return to being a strong contributor out of their bullpen.

Injury Notes: Votto, Moustakas, Strahm, Barlow, Cooper

By Darragh McDonald | August 19, 2022 at 10:39pm CDT

The Reds announced today that they have activated Mike Moustakas from the 10-day injured list while transferring Joey Votto to the 60-day injured list. Votto’s transfer was a mere formality, as it had already been reported that he will be undergoing season-ending rotator cuff surgery. However, Votto underwent the surgery today and there was apparently a bit more damage than expected, with his bicep also needing to be tended to.

Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer relayed the news from general manager Nick Krall. “Joey this morning had successful surgery to repair his left rotator cuff and bicep,” Krall said. “The surgery was a little more than expected. The injury definitely limited the use of his left shoulder and affected his performance, but we expect he will be able to participate in spring training and be ready for the 2023 season.” Despite the surprise damage to Votto’s bicep, the recovery time will still reportedly be six months, meaning he should still be on pace for next season. Votto seems to be in good spirits about the whole thing, if his tweeting is anything to go by. 2023 will be the final guaranteed year of the 10-year, $225MM extension Votto signed back in 2012.

As for Moustakas, he been limited to 73 games this year due to multiple trips to the injured list. When healthy, he’s hit just .200/.289/.326. That’s fairly similar to his .208/.282/.372 output from last year, with both those lines amounting a wRC+ of 70. 2023 will also be the last guaranteed year of his deal. The Reds don’t have any financial commitments for 2024, other than the buyouts of $20MM options for Votto and Moustakas.

Other injury notes from around the league…

  • The Red Sox announced that they have reinstated left-hander Matt Strahm from the injured list, optioning right-hander Josh Winckowski in a corresponding move. Strahm had been out of action for more than a month due to a wrist contusion. The southpaw is having a nice bounceback season after losing most of 2021 to injury. Through 27 2/3 innings this season, he has a 3.58 ERA with a 27.1% strikeout rate that’s the best he’s registered since 2018. He’ll look to continue with those strong results down the stretch as he’s heading back to free agency this winter and could do better than the one-year, $3MM deal he got from Boston for 2022.
  • The Rangers announced that reliever Joe Barlow has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to a right index finger blister, with A.J. Alexy recalled to take his place on the roster. Barlow already went to the IL earlier this year due to a blister on the same finger, returning just two days ago. Now he’ll head back to the IL due to the same issue in what is surely a frustrating development for the hurler. Prior to these setbacks, he got some time as the club’s closer, racking up 13 saves. He has a 3.16 ERA on the season through 31 1/3 innings.
  • The Marlins announced to reporters, including Christina De Nicola of of MLB.com, that first baseman/outfielder Garrett Cooper has been placed on the seven-day concussion IL. Cooper’s hitting .269/.345/.415 on the year, good enough for a wRC+ of 118. He’s somewhat quietly been a consistently above-average hitter in recent years, producing a wRC+ of 111 or higher in four straight season now.

Rangers Designate Garrett Richards For Assignment

By Darragh McDonald | August 17, 2022 at 4:00pm CDT

The Rangers announced that right-handed pitcher Joe Barlow has been activated from the 15-day injured list. To make room for Barlow on the active roster, righty Garrett Richards was designated for assignment. Additionally, outfielder Kole Calhoun has been sent on a rehab assignment.

Richards, 34, has largely been a starting pitcher for years, working exclusively out of the rotation from 2014 to 2019. He transitioned into more relief work over the past couple of seasons, showing some promise in that department last year. With the Red Sox last year, he had a 5.22 ERA as a starter but a 3.42 mark as a reliever.

Based on that showing, the Rangers grabbed Richards this offseason, hoping that a permanent bullpen role would unlock a new gear for him. He and the club agreed to a one-year deal with a $5.5MM guarantee, which came in the form of a $4.5MM salary and $1MM buyout on a $9MM club option for 2023.

Unfortunately, the bullpen breakout hasn’t emerged as hoped. Richards has thrown 42 2/3 innings over 32 appearances this season with a 5.27 ERA and a subpar 19.5% strikeout rate. Based on those poor results, the Rangers have decided to cut bait and remove Richards from the roster. With the trade deadline now passed, their only options will be to put Richards on waivers, either the outright variety or the release kind. There’s little distinction between the two in this case, as Richards has more than five years service time, meaning he could reject an outright assignment and elect free agency without forfeiting any salary.

There’s still about $1.18MM left to be paid out of that salary, along with the $1MM buyout on the 2023 option. It seems likely that he will go unclaimed on waivers and become a free agent, with the Rangers on the hook for paying out the remainder of that money. Once he is a free agent, however, interested teams could find some reasons for optimism in his work this year. His 7% walk rate is a couple ticks below the 9.1% league average for relievers this season. His 57.3% strand rate is unusually low and should be due for some positive regression. His 52.6% ground ball rate is also quite strong, much better than the league average rate of 43.3%. Perhaps a move to a better defensive team would be a better fit for his low-strikeout approach, as the Rangers rank 21st in the league with -1 Defensive Runs Saved, 18th with a -0.4 Ultimate Zone Rating and 23rd in Outs Above Average with a -12.

As for Barlow, he showed enough promise this year to get some work as the closer in Texas, racking up 13 saves. He landed on the injured list in the middle of July due to a blister, only now returning after over a month. Through 30 1/3 innings on the year, he has a 3.26 ERA with a quality 6.6% walk rate, though subpar strikeout and ground ball rates of 19% and 35.6%, respectively.

Rangers Select Joe Barlow, Designate Brett de Geus

By Anthony Franco | June 23, 2021 at 4:47pm CDT

The Rangers announced they’ve selected the contract of right-hander Joe Barlow. Fellow righty Brett de Geus has been designated for assignment to create 40-man roster space. Texas also recalled Wes Benjamin and optioned Demarcus Evans.

It’s a bullpen shuffle that’ll result in Barlow getting his first major league opportunity. An 11th-round pick out of Salt Lake Community College in 2016, Barlow has worked exclusively in relief throughout his pro career. Across parts of five minor league seasons, he’s pitched to a 2.64 ERA. Barlow’s missed bats in droves, striking out 34.2% of batters faced in the minors, but he’s also shown significant control issues. The 25-year-old has dished out free passes to 15.4% of opponents in his career.

To his credit, Barlow has walked a career-low 10.1% of hitters in 21 frames at Triple-A Round Rock this year. That’s right in line with the MLB average for relievers (exactly 10%), so the Rangers will give him an opportunity to try to carry over that passable strike-throwing against big league hitters. Barlow has continued to keep batters off balance as he’s climbed to the minors’ highest level, striking out 36.7% of opponents this season while managing a 2.57 ERA.

The Rangers selected de Geus from the Dodgers organization in last winter’s Rule 5 draft, meaning he needed to stick in the majors all season if the Rangers wanted to retain his contractual rights long-term. He made the Opening Day roster and has gotten a pretty long leash this year, tossing 26 2/3 innings across 19 appearances. de Geus has given up an 8.44 ERA with mediocre strikeout and walk numbers (20.5% and 10.2%, respectively), although he’s kept the ball on the ground at a fantastic 55.6% clip and managed a decent 4.00 SIERA. Nevertheless, the Rangers decided to remove him from the roster. He’ll be placed on waivers; if he clears, he’ll need to be offered back to the Dodgers, who won’t need to keep him on the 40-man roster.
