Jose Capellan

NL West Notes: Capellan, D’Backs, Tomas, Dodgers

By Jeff Todd | April 9, 2015 at 9:42am CDT

Former big league reliever Jose Capellan, who last pitched for the Rockies in 2008, died unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack earlier this week, ESPNDeportes.com’s Enrique Rojas reports (Spanish language link). Capellan, just 34 years of age, tossed 123 1/3 big league frames over five years, working to a 4.89 ERA. MLBTR extends its condolences to his family and friends around the game.

Here are some notes out of the NL West:

  • The Diamondbacks deserve credit for putting their best team on the field to start the year, regardless of contract status, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic argues. Arizona parted with Trevor Cahill and Cody Ross while moving Aaron Hill to a reserve role (in which it will be harder for him to build trade value). And the team has moved up the timeline of youngsters Jake Lamb and Archie Bradley, while also giving starting roles to Chris Owings and Nick Ahmed, rather than playing the service time game with those players.
  • Yasmany Tomas just wrapped up his first spring with the Diamondbacks, but the club has already planned to institute a “weight goal” for the sizable slugger, MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert reports. “I think fitness-wise, he needs to get in better shape,” said manager Chip Hale. “He knows that. He worked really hard all spring. It’s not just working hard, it’s how you eat and learning a new country and all these things. I mean, it hasn’t been easy for him. For me he performed really well for where he was at coming to a new country.”
  • The Dodgers are running a significant risk with their rotation, writes Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times. With Hyun-jin Ryu still very much a subject of concern for skipper Don Mattingly, the team is highly reliant on the health of Zack Greinke’s right elbow.

Astros Toby Hall, Four Others

By Tim Dierkes | January 15, 2009 at 9:09am CDT

I don’t believe we have covered all of the Astros’ recent minor league signings.  Brian McTaggart reported yesterday that they’ve added Toby Hall, Danny Graves, Jose Capellan, Chad Paronto, and Brian Esposito.  Hall is the "big name" here; he hit .260/.304/.331 in 136 plate appearances for the White Sox while earning $1.75MM.

Denny Bautista To Tigers For Jose Capellan

By Tim Dierkes | December 4, 2007 at 10:38am CDT

Jon Paul Morosi has the scoop – the Tigers and Rockies are close to completing a swap of relievers.  The Tigers would send Jose Capellan to the Rockies for Denny Bautista.

Bautista, 25, was acquired by the Rockies from the Royals in the Jeremy Affeldt swap at the 2006 trading deadline.  He’d been a starter for much of his career.  He was promising in Triple A in ’07 but control problems persisted.

You may recall there was a Jose Capellan derby last summer after the Brewers demoted him to Triple A.  The Rockies were interested then, too.  He turns 27 in January and didn’t do much this year.  Perhaps the Rockies will be more inclined to let LaTroy Hawkins leave now.

Tigers Acquire Jose Capellan

By Tim Dierkes | July 1, 2007 at 4:35pm CDT

The Brewers finally traded reliever Jose Capellan; the Tigers snagged the 26 year-old for southpaw Chris Cody.

Many teams kicked the tires on Capellan, but I hadn’t seen the Tigers mentioned previously.  His work at Triple A was OK.  His 7.1 K/9 was nothing special, and his control wasn’t great.  Same story since his recall to the bigs.  I’m not sure how much he’s going to help the Tigers, but they will take anything they can get right now.

Cody, 23, had just earned a promotion from the Low A Michigan Whitecaps to the High A Lakeland Tigers after posting a 6.1 K/BB.  He was old for his level, and still isn’t anyone to get excited about.  Doug Melvin originally expected "something big" in return for Capellan.

Capellan Placed On Restricted List

By Tim Dierkes | April 18, 2007 at 5:47pm CDT

Exiled Brewers reliever Jose Capellan was placed on the minor league restricted list today for failing to report to the Nashville Sounds today or yesterday.  I believe this means he doesn’t get paid.  The restricted list is a favorite tool of the Pirates (Jody Gerut, Raul Mondesi, Chris Duffy).

I’m sure the Brewers are less than thrilled with his attitude, and they’ve been trying to trade him for a while now.  Yesterday, Ken Rosenthal wrote that there was "little demand" for Capellan around baseball despite his six scoreless innings in Triple A.  Still, many teams have at least inquired.

Doug Melvin is determined not to "sell low" on Capellan – a trade seems inevitable, but the Brewers are in no hurry.

Marlins Interested In Jose Capellan

By Tim Dierkes | April 16, 2007 at 10:19am CDT

Could we be adding yet another closer candidate to the Marlins?  According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, they’ve got interest in 26 year-old right-handed reliever Jose Capellan.  Capellan has thrown 6.1 scoreless innings in Triple A so far.

Past suitors: the Rockies, Giants, Devil Rays, and Nationals.  It’s known that the Nats would like to convert Capellan back to starting; maybe the Fish would do the same.  Back in ’05 Capellan started 12 games in Triple A, but suffered from control problems.

Unfortunately, the Brewers are asking for too much according to Juan C. Rodriguez’s source.  They want "something big" for him.

Rockies Rumors: Kim, Holliday

By Tim Dierkes | April 10, 2007 at 3:26pm CDT

A few small Rockies tidbits from Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post:

  • Part of the reason the Rockies were unable to bring reliever Ron Villone aboard was that they didn’t have room in their budget.  To get some flexibility, they’d love to unload Byung-Hyun Kim’s $2.5MM and get a cheap reliever in return.  Renck mentions that the Rox have kicked the tires on Milwaukee’s recently demoted Jose Capellan.
  • Scott Boras declared yesterday that there will be no in-season negotiations regarding a multiyear contract for Matt Holliday.  Holliday won’t reach free agency until after 2009, but if he keeps doing what he’s doing he’ll make the most money by going year-to-year.  Another Boras client, Joe Crede, has followed this model.  I believe Crede can compare himself to free agent peers in his final arbitration year after this season.  If you think he’s on par with Adrian Beltre, he might be in line for $10MM.  That might mean a midsummer trade.  But I digress.

Ken Rosenthal’s Latest

By Tim Dierkes | April 7, 2007 at 2:45pm CDT

Ken Rosenthal has a new update up over at FOX Sports.  The trade rumor highlights:

  • Plenty of teams are interested in Brewers reliever Jose Capellan: the Giants, Rockies, Devil Rays, and Nationals.  I’m surprised that Capellan was deemed unworthy of the Brewers’ pen; he gave them 70 decent innings last year.  Rosenthal mentions that the Nats might convert Capellan back to a starter.  A fine idea, as that’s how Capellan came up with the Braves.  He just needs to get his curve and changeup tuned up.
  • The story on Mike Cameron remains the same: the Padres don’t want to go past two years.  A few days from now the team should know whether a compromise can be reached.  Maybe a middle-ground vesting option for 2010.  He’s a good athlete; he’s not going to age as poorly as some guys.  If he leaves, maybe the Pads would sign Aaron Rowand.  UPDATE: Just saw Mr. Rosenthal on television, and he mentioned the Braves as a mighty fine fit for Cameron if he hits the market.
  • Rosenthal seems to hint that the Cubs should still get a five-year, $80MMish deal done with Carlos Zambrano, perhaps within a few months.  At least, he’s urging them to close the deal despite the team being up for sale this summer.
