White Sox, Juan Carela Agree To Minor League Deal

The White Sox re-signed righty Juan Carela to a minor league deal, per the team’s transaction log at MLB.com. Chicago designated Carela for assignment and released him earlier this month, though that was only done because of the fact that Carela was injured and on the 40-man roster. Injured players cannot be passed through outright waivers, by rule, so Carela was released and will now return on a non-roster pact with an eye toward contributing in 2026, when he’s hopefully recovered from last month’s Tommy John surgery.

Carela, 23, came to the White Sox in the 2023 deadline trade that sent reliever Keynan Middleton to the Yankees. He pitched well for Chicago’s High-A club down the stretch that year and delivered a strong performance — 3.71 ERA, 25.2% strikeout rate, 9.9% walk rate, 43.2% grounder rate — in 106 2/3 innings between High-A and Double-A in 2024. That performance netted Carela a spot on the White Sox’ 40-man roster as they sought to protect him from being selected by another organization in December’s annual Rule 5 Draft.

Heading into the season, Carela looked primed to make his big league debut at some point in 2025. He’d pitched well in more than 100 innings of High-A work and handled himself well in a late-2024 bump to Double-A. A healthy Carela could’ve opened the season either with Double-A Birmingham or Triple-A Charlotte and pushed for a roster spot this summer or later in the season. Unfortunately, both he and fellow righty Prelander Berroa were diagnosed with torn ulnar collateral ligaments in their pitching elbows this spring and will now be out until midway through the 2026 campaign.

White Sox Select Joshua Palacios, Omar Narvaez; Release Juan Carela

The White Sox announced Thursday that they’ve selected the contracts of outfielder Joshua Palacios and catcher Omar Narvaez. (The likelihood of the Narvaez move was first reported last night.) They’ve also placed catcher Korey Lee and outfielder Mike Tauchman on the 10-day injured list due to a sprained left ankle and a strained right hamstring, respectively.

The Sox only had one open 40-man roster spot, so they’ve released right-hander Juan Carela to accommodate the addition of Palacios and Narvaez. Carela was acquired from the Yankees in the 2023 trade that sent Keynan Middleton to New York, and the Sox selected him to the 40-man roster just this past November to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft. However, Carela suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament in spring training and required Tommy John surgery.

Since injured players cannot be placed on outright waivers, the Sox will instead release Carela. It’s relatively common for teams and players in this exact situation to quickly strike up a new minor league contract, but the right-hander will technically have the option to talk to 29 other clubs, assuming he clears release waivers. The 23-year-old right-hander has yet to make his MLB debut, but the Sox added him to the 40-man roster on the heels of a 2024 season in which he logged 106 2/3 innings of 3.71 ERA ball with a 25.2% strikeout rate and 9.9% walk rate between High-A and Double-A.

Palacios, 29, has played in parts of four big league seasons between the Blue Jays, Nationals and Pirates. He saw semi-regular work in Pittsburgh during the 2023 season and showed a bit of pop but struggled to get on base. He entered spring training out of minor league options and didn’t make the cut on a Pirates club that had several outfield options ahead of him on the depth chart. The Pirates designated Palacios for assignment and outrighted him to Triple-A, but he rejected the assignment in favor of free agency, which was his right as a player who’d been outrighted once previously in his career.

Over the past two seasons in Pittsburgh, Palacios slashed .236/.291/.398 with a dozen homers in 342 plate appearances. His 19.9% strikeout rate is a few ticks below the league-average mark, and he was plagued by a .264 average on balls in play despite frequent hard contact, which could create some optimism for better performance. However, Palacios is also an extreme ground-ball hitter (51% as a Pirate) with good-not-great speed and a pull-heavy approach — all of which leaves him a bit susceptible to a lower BABIP.

Still, with both Tauchman and Andrew Benintendi on the injured list — Benintendi suffered an adductor strain earlier this week — Palacios ought to get a chance for significant playing time. If he can make the most of it, he can be controlled for four years beyond the current season. He’s a career .302/.389/.482 hitter in 720 Triple-A plate appearances, so there’s certainly a track record of performance in the upper minors upon which the White Sox can dream.

At this point, it’s not yet clear how long Lee or Tauchman will be sidelined. Lee suffered the injury while hurrying back to first base yesterday when Guardians catcher Austin Hedges threw behind him in a pickoff attempt (video link). Lee’s left ankle contorted significantly, and he was tagged out when he crumbled off the bag. He was in obvious pain as White Sox trainers helped him off the field. He’d gotten out to a fast start, going 5-for-15 with a pair of doubles and a pair of walks in 17 plate appearances (.333/.412/.467).

As for the veteran Tauchman, he missed the first week-plus of the season with a strain in that same right hamstring and only made his 2025 debut on April 6. The 34-year-old signed a one-year, $1.95MM deal in free agency and has appeared in only three games thus far, going 4-for-10 (all singles) with a pair of walks in a dozen trips to the plate (.400/.500/.400). Given that he’s now dealing with back-to-back strains in the same muscle, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Sox took a more cautious approach to his absence this time around. Timetables for both Lee and Tauchman will presumably become clearer after manager Will Venable meets with the media prior to today’s series finale in Cleveland.

Prelander Berroa, Juan Carela To Undergo Tommy John Surgery

The White Sox announced that right-handers Prelander Berroa and Juan Carela will require Tommy John surgery in the coming days. Both pitchers will therefore miss the entire 2025 season and likely part of 2026 as well. James Fegan of Sox Machine was among those to relay the news.

Berroa, 25 in April, came to the White Sox from the Mariners last February as part of the Gregory Santos trade. He spent the 2024 season getting shuttled between the majors and Triple-A. He tossed 19 innings in the big leagues with a 3.32 earned run average. His 31.3% strikeout rate was huge but he also gave out walks at a concerning 15.7% clip. In his 46 1/3 Triple-A innings, he had a 6.41 ERA, 22.5% strikeout rate and 16.1% walk rate.

The control is an obvious flag but the ingredients are interesting. Berroa averaged over 97 miles per hour on both his four-seamer and his sinker last year, while also throwing a slider that averaged 87.7 mph. He was wild with the White Sox but also able to rack up strikeouts. His Triple-A numbers weren’t as good but that seems to be an outlier. From 2021 to 2023, he threw 264 2/3 minor league innings with a 3.13 ERA, 34.9% strikeout rate and 14% walk rate.

Ideally, Berroa would have used the 2025 season to continue harnessing his powerful arsenal. Instead, he’ll have to miss the entire campaign and perhaps part of next season as well. He currently has 45 days of service time. Assuming the White Sox put him on the 60-day injured list at some point, he’ll get a full year of service time and will be 26 next April, around the time when he should be getting healthy.

Carela, 23, has yet to make his major league debut and hasn’t pitched at the Triple-A level either. He was just added to the 40-man roster in November to keep him out of the Rule 5 draft. He came to the Sox from the Yankees via the 2023 Keynan Middleton trade. From 2021 to 2024, he tossed 371 2/3 innings in the minors with a 4.12 ERA, 26.8% strikeout rate and 10.1% walk rate.

The numbers have been good but he only just reached Double-A in August of last year, getting seven starts there. It would have been great for him to spend 2025 continuing to work towards the majors and working his way into the rotation depth mix, but that will have to be put on pause until some time next year.

The White Sox optioned him to Double-A earlier today, an understandable move. As mentioned, he only just reached that level late last year. They will likely keep him on the minor league injured list for now. If they wanted to open up a 40-man roster spot at some point in the season, they could recall Carela and place him on the big league 60-day IL, though doing so would require giving Carela major league pay and service time.

White Sox To Select Colson Montgomery, Juan Carela

The White Sox have selected the contracts of shortstop Colson Montgomery and right-hander Juan Carela, per the team transaction log at MLB.com. Both are now on the 40-man roster and ineligible to be taken in next month’s Rule 5 Draft.

Montgomery, 22, was the Sox’ top pick in the 2021 draft, coming off the board with the No. 22 overall pick. He’s been the system’s top prospect since and currently factors prominently into top-100 lists at multiple publications (e.g. No. 38 at Baseball America, No. 37 at MLB.com). He ripped through High-A and Double-A as a 21-year-old in 2023 before struggling for much of the season as a 22-year-old in Triple-A this year. Montgomery did finish the season nicely, slashing .263/.357/.465 in his final six weeks of action, but his overall .214/.329/.381 slash obviously leaves plenty to be desired.

Even with those struggles, however, there’s no way the Sox were going to leave a prospect of Montgomery’s caliber unprotected. He breezed through the low minors and was four years younger than his average opponent in Triple-A. Montgomery hit .313/.511/.656 in 45 plate appearances during the Arizona Fall League as well, further adding to that nice finish. Scouting reports aren’t sold on him as a long-term shortstop, due primarily to his 6’3″, 225-pound frame, but Montgomery is thought to have the arm and defensive chops to handle third base even if a position switch is necessary down the road.

Carela, 22, came to the ChiSox from the Yankees in the 2023 trade that sent Keynan Middleton to the Bronx. He split the 2024 campaign between High-A and Double-A, logging sub-4.00 ERAs at each stop. Collectively, it played out as a 3.71 earned run average, a strong 25.2% strikeout rate and a 9.9% walk rate he’ll work to pare down in the future. Carela totaled 106 2/3 innings, all as a starter. He’ll likely head back to Double-A to begin the 2025 season, as he only tossed 32 2/3 innings there. Given his placement on the 40-man roster and the likelihood that he’ll split 2025 between Double-A and Triple-A, he’ll be a candidate to make his big league debut later in the 2025 campaign if he continues to pitch well.
