Diamondbacks Finalize Coaching Staff

By Anthony Franco | December 13, 2024 at 8:08pm CDT

The D-Backs announced their 2025 coaching staff this evening. The previously unreported additions are the hirings of Travis Denker as assistant hitting coach and Owen Dew as assistant pitching coach. Former assistant hitting coach Rick Short is moving to minor league field coordinator, the team announced. Arizona dismissed prior assistant pitching coach Dan Carlson at the end of the season.

It’s the first MLB coaching jobs for both Denker and Dew. The former reached the majors as a player, suiting up in 24 games for the Giants in 2008. Denker spent 12 seasons in the minor leagues. He finished his playing career in the Arizona system in 2017 before moving into coaching. He has spent the past six years coaching in the minors, including two years as a hitting coach with Triple-A Reno.

Dew, 36, is a former Cleveland draftee who pitched in their system for four years. He moved into coaching with Cleveland in 2017. Dew worked his way from short season ball up the minor league ladder, getting to their top affiliate in Columbus in 2023. He spent two years with the Guardians’ Triple-A team before getting the bump to Arizona’s big league staff.

This will be Torey Lovullo’s ninth season at the helm in Phoenix. In addition to Denker and Dew, new hirings include pitching coach Brian Kaplan, bullpen coach Wellington Cepeda, and third base coach Shaun Larkin. Bench coach Jeff Banister, hitting coach Joe Mather, assistant hitting coach Damion Easley, and first base coach Dave McKay are returnees.

Diamondbacks To Make Coaching Staff Changes

By Anthony Franco | October 7, 2021 at 3:49pm CDT

The Diamondbacks signed manager Torey Lovullo to a one-year contract extension last month, ensuring he’d be back for a sixth season in the dugout. There’ll be a pretty significant shakeup around the skipper, though, as Zach Buchanan of the Athletic reported upon a series of coaching staff changes this afternoon.

Only three members of Lovullo’s staff will return in their current capacity: first base coach Dave McKay, third base coach Tony Perezchica and bullpen coach Mike Fetters. Bench coach Luis Urueta has been reassigned within the organization; Matt Herges is out as pitching coach but could return to the organization in some other capacity; catching coach Robby Hammock will not be brought back.

Urueta has been on Lovullo’s staff since the end of 2017, serving as bench coach for the past couple seasons. He drew some consideration in the Red Sox’s managerial search last winter but remained in Arizona after Boston re-hired Alex Cora. Herges was hired leading up to the 2020 season, his first stint as a big league pitching coach. The former big leaguer had previously served as the Giants’ bullpen coach.

The D-Backs were already expected to search for new hitting instruction after firing hitting coaches Darnell Coles and Eric Hisnke in June. Rick Short and Drew Hedman had been promoted to serve as interim co-hitting coaches, but they won’t return in that capacity. Buchanan notes, however, that Arizona is considering some form of nontraditional hitting coaching — as evidenced by their atypical co-coach setup this summer — that could see Short and Heyman return in some other role.

Diamondbacks Part Ways With Hitting Coaches Darnell Coles And Eric Hinske

By Anthony Franco | June 10, 2021 at 5:05pm CDT

5:05 pm: General manager Mike Hazen reiterated the organization’s faith in Lovullo, telling Bob Nightengale of USA Today (Twitter link) he “still (feels) like Torey is the right person to lead these guys and to right this ship and get us back to where we need to go.”

4:13 pm: The Diamondbacks announced this afternoon they’ve parted ways with hitting coach Darnell Coles and assistant hitting coach Eric Hinske. To replace them, the club has promoted Rick Short, who had been hitting coach with their Triple-A affiliate in Reno, and run production coordinator Drew Hedman. Short and Hedman will serve as co-hitting coaches.

Coles and Hinske were both hired during the 2018-19 offseason. In each of the two-plus seasons since, the D-Backs have run out a below-average offense. Obviously, it’s difficult to tell what extent the blame for that should fall on the coaching staff versus the players, but the organization evidently decided it was time to bring in a pair of new voices.

Given how disastrous this season has been, it’s not hard to see why the club is shaking things up. The Diamondbacks have the league’s worst record at 20-43, and they’re currently amidst a nineteen-game road losing streak, a mark that’s three games shy of an all-time record. The lineup isn’t the only reason for that level of futility, but it hasn’t been a strength either. Diamondbacks hitters have a cumulative .238/.312/.394 slash line, excluding pitchers. The resulting 94 wRC+ places them just twenty-second among the league’s thirty clubs in park-adjusted offense.

Short, who appeared in eleven MLB games as a player with the 2005 Nationals, has spent the past decade in the Arizona organization as a scout and minor league coach. Hedman, who had previously coached at the amateur level, was hired by the D-Backs as a scout in 2018. He was promoted to run production coordinator the following year. David Laurila of FanGraphs examined Hedman’s rapid rise last April.

The firing of Coles and Hinske will only heighten speculation about the future of manager Torey Lovullo. The fifth-year skipper is in the final year of his current contract, and the team’s dreadful performance over the past two seasons has led some fans to suggest Lovullo’s job might be in jeopardy. The front office has continued to stick by him, with CEO Derrick Hall telling reporters last month Lovullo was “not the problem” with the organization (via Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic). The team’s tailspin has only intensified since then, however.
