Gammons Digs Blogs

By Tim Dierkes | January 22, 2008 at 10:07am CDT

Yesterday was a thrill for me – the man himself, Peter Gammons, mentioned MLBTR in his blog.  He mentioned MLBTradeRumors.com under "sites that I never miss" and added "I do not want any psychologist to know how many times a day I go to ESPN.com, Baseball Musings or MLBTradeRumors.com to check updates."  It’s a huge honor that the king of baseball hot stove frequents this blog.  Thanks Peter.

Holliday Discusses Future

By Tim Dierkes | January 22, 2008 at 9:35am CDT

The Denver Post’s Troy E. Renck recently visited Matt Holliday at his home and discussed all sorts of things.  Holliday is signed through the 2009 season, and his future beyond that was a theme.

The Rockies were said to be considering a four-year offer that would’ve bought out two years of free agency, before signing Holliday for 2008-09.  Holliday said that it wouldn’t be fair for the Rockies to expect him to take a four-year deal.

As Renck points out, there is a huge gap between the Rockies buying out two years of free agency and the nine years they gave to Todd Helton.  The length of the deal is the central issue, but Holliday is willing to make concessions if the Rockies do the same.  My guess is that he’d be up for a six-year extension, possibly five.  Holliday added that if Garrett Atkins were traded it would obviously influence his decision on whether to stay in Colorado.

Johan Santana Rumors

By Tim Dierkes | January 22, 2008 at 9:04am CDT

I know some of you crave daily Johan Santana updates…today we’ve got a blurb from Charley Walters:

The Twins say they’re not panicking while holding out for the best deal for Johan Santana. But word within baseball circles is that offers by the New York Yankees (no more Phil Hughes) and Boston Red Sox are diminishing by the week. Best bet now for a trade of the two-time Cy Young Award winner appears to be with the New York Mets in a deal that would not include fast-rising hitter Fernando Martinez.

Yikes – from those solid Yankee/Red Sox offers to a Martinez-less Mets package?  If that happens then I would say Bill Smith overplayed his hand.  Kat O’Brien recently talked to Smith, but wasn’t able to get much out of him.  She believes the Yanks, Red Sox, and Mets "all retain some interest."

Odds and Ends: Howard, Cormier, Gerut

By Tim Dierkes | January 22, 2008 at 8:51am CDT

I am currently evaluating Phil Hughes’ playlist.  Some of it is solid.  Let’s get on to the odds and ends…

  • Bill Conlin thinks it’s a mistake for the Phillies to pay Ryan Howard at a rate commensurate with his service time.  It’s a slippery slope – shouldn’t Cole Hamels be earning $15MM instead of $500K, then?  The system may be broken but it doesn’t make sense for the Phillies to start ignoring service time.
  • John Mozeliak is not done yet.  Meanwhile, Albert Pujols continued to direct his ire at KTVI-TV of St. Louis.
  • The Orioles agreed to a minor league deal with 27 year-old righty Lance Cormier worth around $450K.  Cormier doesn’t have much to show for his 244 big league innings, whether starting or relieving.  He has a decent groundball rate, at least.
  • The Padres signed Jody Gerut to a minor league pact that could be worth as much as $910K.  He’s 30 now; his best season was an .830 OPS for Cleveland at age 25.  Since then he’s had all sorts of knee problems and even had a grievance with the Pirates.

Rumor Royalty: Mike DiGiovanna (Angels)

By Tim Dierkes | January 22, 2008 at 7:42am CDT

Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times has been named Rumor Royalty for the Angels; he is the best source of Halos hot stove buzz.  He was kind enough to answer three questions for MLBTR.

MLBTR: What do you make of the Paul Konerko rumors?  Do you think the Angels and Sox have had post-Meetings discussions about him, despite Kenny Williams’ claim otherwise?

DiGiovanna: I had heard the White Sox and Angels might be up to something four or five days before that report came out. I made several calls looking into the matter, as did my counterpart from the Chicago Tribune, White Sox beat writer Mark Gonzales, and after two or three days, we determined that there had been exploratory conversations between the teams during the winter meetings but nothing substantive since. Neither of us decided to write anything on it. Then a report was published claiming the Angels and White Sox were discussing a deal that would send Howie Kendrick and Ervin Santana to Chicago for Konerko. I was very skeptical about it because the Angels would not trade Kendrick straight up for Konerko, let alone Kendrick AND Ervin Santana. Then that afternoon, Kenny Williams shot down the rumor forcefully, saying on the record that there had been no talks with the Angels since the winter meetings and that he hasn’t discussed Konerko. I know GMs don’t always tell the whole truth, but when a GM knocks down a rumor so forcefully, I tend to believe him.

I know Angels Manager Mike Scioscia likes Konerko a lot, but Konerko will be 32 this season, he’s got three years and some $30 million left on his contract, and I don’t think his power projects as well outside of U.S. Cellular Field, a known hitter’s haven. The Angels might get almost as much production, though without as many homers, from first baseman Casey Kotchman for a lot less money over the next three years.

MLBTR: Will the Angels will make a push to sign Francisco Rodriguez to an extension during the season?  What kind of dollars and years would you expect?

DiGiovanna: New GM Tony Reagins does not seem at all motivated to secure Rodriguez to a long-term deal, and since the two sides were unable to come to terms on a 2008 contract before exchanging arbitration figures last week—Rodriguez wants $12.5 million; the Angels offered $10 million—that’s an indication that they are still far apart on a multiyear deal. Rodriguez believes he is one of the top closers in the game and thinks he should be paid like one, so I would not be surprised if he is seeking a deal similar to the three-year, $45-million contract Mariano Rivera signed this winter. The Angels like Rodriguez and would love to lock him up for a few years, but I don’t think they want to pay him $15 million a year. I think Rodriguez will become a free agent after the season, the Angels will move Scot Shields into the closer role and, if there is still no spot for him in the rotation, convert Ervin Santana to a set-up man.

MLBTR: Is Ervin Santana the odd man out as far as the Angels’ six starters?  Do you expect him to be with the organization on Opening Day?

DiGiovanna: Barring injury to any of the other starters, yes, I think Santana will be the odd man out unless he has a phenomenal spring training and Joe Saunders struggles. John Lackey, Kelvim Escobar, Jon Garland and Jered Weaver are rotation locks, so Saunders and Santana will battle for the fifth spot. But in talking to Angels scouts and front-office executives, I get the sense they think Saunders—now that Bartolo Colon is out of the picture—has earned a big league spot, that he has done all he can in the minor leagues, and that another demotion to triple-A Salt Lake would be detrimental to the left-hander. They also like having at least one left-hander in their rotation.

However, I think Santana will not only be with the organization on opening day but on the big league roster. He has shown during his brief stints as a reliever that he can be very effective coming out of the bullpen, and he would be valuable as a swing man, a guy who could pitch long relief or spot start in case of injury. The Angels also may use this season to start grooming Santana into a short reliever.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Boras, Murton, Marquis, Clark

By Tim Dierkes | January 21, 2008 at 8:03pm CDT

Ken Rosenthal is here to hopefully rescue what’s been a slow day for rumors.

  • Rosenthal points out that it seems Scott Boras has been more flexible with his clients’ contracts this year, perhaps even as the result of his "failures" with Alex Rodriguez and Kenny Rogers.  A new, gentler Boras?  Wait til Mark Teixeira, Matt Holliday, and Prince Fielder reach free agency.
  • The Padres are targeting Matt Murton for left field, a notion that gels with Kevin Towers’ stated quest to acquire a corner outfielder via trade.  Plus, Towers gets along well with Cubs GM Jim Hendry.  Not sure how the teams would match up, unless things expand to include Khalil Greene.  The Cubs would have to be sure they don’t need Murton for other deals or because of other deals.
  • Rosenthal agrees with the recent rumor that the Orioles will decide whether to trade Erik Bedard and Brian Roberts by month’s end.  He notes that Cubs starter Jason Marquis actually does have trade value, and could be part of a package for Roberts.  Other teams are interested in him too – go figure.  Innings are innings I guess.  Marquis, 29, is owed $16.25MM over the 2008-09 seasons.
  • An MLBTR commenter questioned the other day why Troy Tulowitzki’s deal was said to top Grady Sizemore’s as the record holder for a player with less than two years service time.  The commenter wondered why Brian McCann wasn’t part of the discussion – he signed for more than Sizemore ($26.8MM) in March of ’07 with about a season and a half under his belt.  Anyone know why McCann’s name doesn’t come up in this discussion?
  • One of Rosenthal’s sources believes progress has been made on a long-term pact with Holliday, and the recent two-year deal is a positive sign.
  • Teams inquiring on Tony Clark: Mariners, Giants, and Red Sox.  Clark has been mentioned as a Giants target before.

Cubs Bedard/Roberts Talks Revived?

By Tim Dierkes | January 21, 2008 at 6:41pm CDT

UPDATE, 1-21-08 at 6:39pm: According to Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald, "informed insiders say no renewed talks are underway" for a Cubs/Orioles blockbuster.  Miles does believe Hendry is shopping Murton and interested in Byrd.

UPDATE, 1-21-08 at 4:37pm: John Hickey of the Seattle PI notes that the Mariners seem to "very much want Bedard" still.  He sees the Mets as their main competition.

FROM 1-21-08 at 3:09pm:

Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune insists that Orioles owner Peter Angelos did shoot down some kind of Erik Bedard/Brian Roberts to the Cubs blockbuster last week.  Furthermore, Rogers’ source says the talks are now back on.

Rogers speculates that "frustration and gamesmanship" might be why Lou Piniella and Jim Hendry recently denied the blockbuster rumor.  Hendry was quoted as saying "that certainly hasn’t been a path we’ve been on."

Rogers also has sources saying the Cubs may have to give up Matt Murton and one or two other players to get Marlon Byrd from Texas (perhaps Sean Gallagher).  He speculates that a three-team deal with the Rangers and Orioles to net the Cubs Bedard, Roberts, and Byrd is a possibility.  Felix Pie would have to be in that mix, and note that Roch Kubatko said yesterday that the Cubs "would be willing to part with Rich Hill" to get Bedard and Roberts.

Through all of this Rogers says it’s a "very highly placed source" and that he trusts the source.  It’s hard for me to really evaluate this stuff until we get more clarity.  But feel free to discuss.

Octavio Dotel Signs With White Sox

By Tim Dierkes | January 21, 2008 at 2:30pm CDT

UPDATE, 1-21-08 at 2:29pm: According to Ken Rosenthal, this deal is done, though the AP won’t quite confirm it.  Sox Machine debates the pros and cons of the signing and ultimately doesn’t mind it.

UPDATE, 1-18-08 at 2:27pm: Scott Merkin at MLB.com talked to Dotel’s agent, who will only say that Dotel is in the mix.  No deal has been reached.  Apparently six teams are in "active discussions" about Dotel.

FROM 1-18-08 at 7:15am:

According to Impacto Deportivo, the White Sox have signed Octavio Dotel to a two-year, $11MM deal.  The 32 year-old reliever had a 4.11 ERA and 12.0 K/9 in 30.2 innings last year.

The White Sox have decided to buy a bullpen this year, always a risky move.  Dotel can still bring it; it’s just a question of health.  He dealt with shoulder and oblique strains last year, and had Tommy John in June of ’05.  The White Sox seem to have a good medical staff, and they’ll be crucial in making this signing pay off.

Yadier Molina Signs Extension With Cards

By Tim Dierkes | January 21, 2008 at 12:06pm CDT

The Cardinals signed catcher Yadier Molina to a four-year deal today.  The 25 year-old defensive whiz hit .275/.340/.368 in ’07.

The specifics: the package is worth $15.5MM.  The salaries are $1.75MM in ’08, $3.25MM in ’09, $4.25MM in ’10, and $5.25MM in ’11.  The 2012 option is for $7MM.  It’s hard (at least for me) to place a dollar value on catcher defense.  But we know Molina is very good, and there are signs he could even become a plus with the bat.  This seems a decent signing by John Mozeliak.

Khalil Greene’s Future

By Tim Dierkes | January 21, 2008 at 11:28am CDT

Padres beat writer Corey Brock sums up the Khalil Greene situation on his blog.  Greene is due for free agency after the 2009 season, and it does not look like he wants to stay in San Diego longer than that.  Despite his Spicoli-like appearance he might prefer to play on the East Coast and/or in a more hitter friendly park.  He’s 28, plays strong defense, and has a lot of power.  He has been a bit OBP-challenged, whether due to low batting averages, lack of walks, or both.  He’s set to earn $4-5MM in ’08.

Plenty of teams could use a shortstop like Greene: the Orioles, Royals, Angels, Nationals, Cubs, and Cardinals come to mind.  However the Padres have no replacement for him.  Erick Aybar, Felipe Lopez, and Ronny Cedeno are three possibilities where Towers could get a young shortstop in return (Lopez, less so).  Are any of those three a sufficient bounty for two years of Greene?  Pitching might have to be added to make it viable for San Diego.  Towers will be a lot less limited if he can acquire a good young shortstop in a separate deal.
