Giants Talking To Calero, Could Add A Catcher

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 15, 2010 at 1:41pm CDT

The Giants are definitely interested in reliever Kiko Calero, according to Mychael Urban of CSNBayArea.com. Giants vice president of baseball operations Bobby Evans confirmed that the club has been talking to Calero's agent, Diego Benz. Even still, Evans seems to think Calero will get a better offer from another club.

There has been little reported interest in the 35-year-old this offseason, despite his strong 2009 year. Calero allowed 36 hits and 30 walks in 60 innings, striking out 69 for a 1.95 ERA, but we haven't heard of interested teams other than the Cubs and Giants.

Brian Sabean is prepared to hand the starting catcher's job to Buster Posey, but Urban says the GM sounds open to adding another backstop (we know they inquired on Yorvit Torrealba). Signing a fifth starter is not a priority for the Giants.

Preferably I’d sign Yorvit, he can at least hit a ball over 1-2-3 strikeout Whiteside. Yorvit and Posey can switch off playing time giving Posey respectable playing time. I wouldn’t mind too much if Posey DID start

If they sign Torrealba, you can expect Posey to spend most of the year in AAA, and for Yorvit to get overworked because of a reluctance to start Whiteside. Different band, same tune.

That’d be real nice if they could add Calero to that already good bullpen.. Essentially shortening games to 6 innings with Calero, Affeldt, Wilson..

The addition of Calero and the subtraction of Valdez and Howry looks like it could be the best move Sabean makes all offseason, if the price is right.

Middle Relief: Joaquin (R), Runzler (L), Martinez (R), Medders (R)
    Setup: Affeldt (L), Romo (R)
    Closer: Wilson (R)

And if we sign a fifth starter, we might see Martinez replaced with Bumgarner (L) partway through the season for long relief. I REALLY like this bullpen.

best thing he did was let Howry walk (pretty obvious decision IMO) and if he replaces him with Calero it would sure up an already strong bullpen to go with a dominant starting rotation.. I hope he makes this happen.. Calero, when hes right, is filthy.

Martinez will not make the roster, let alone be the fifth starter.

Starters in order = Lincecum, Zito, Cain, Sanchez, Bum
      Relief:

      Wilson
      Affeldt
      Romo
      Runzler
      Medders
      Joaquin
      and possibly a free agent.

Martinez will be in AAA to see if he can get right.

He was mediocre before the injury and hasn’t been right since.

He was injured in the opening series of the season. He did poorly in the second half because he was a long reliever forced into a starter’s role. He’s got decent stuff, but can’t pitch five innings. Medders and Joaquin, however, can’t pitch more than two in a given start. And if the fifth starter ends up being someone like Pucetas or even Bumgarner, you might need an innings eater. Right now, that’s Martinez. If they sign Calero or maybe Park, everything gets much easier, and Martinez indeed starts the year in AAA.

i must admit i like what sabean is doing this offseason. as is usually the case with sabean, his best moves are the ones he doesn’t make, but i think derosa was a good signing, and being willing to start the year with posey and potentially bumgarner is encouraging

Let me guess Jim Hendry is gonna sit back and watch while another player we’ve Been linked to for months signs elsewhere. I’m not to happy with this offseason so far. Jim get to work and make an effort!

Not like he has a ton of money to work with.. The chubs have a lot of money tied up already for next year from gobs of bad contracts.

Signing Calero would be a great move by Sabean. Signing Yorvit would not be. Whiteside is great at calling games and Buster could learn a lot from him.
