Blue Jays Checked In On Johnny Damon

By Tim Dierkes | January 28, 2010 at 6:40pm CDT

6:40pm: The Jays have talked to Boras about Damon, according to Jordan MLB.com's Jordan Bastian.  In a follow up tweet, Bastian quotes GM Alex Anthopoulos telling fans at a  season-ticket holder Q&A session, "I don't want to get your hopes up."  However, Bastian writes that the club has had internal discussions about the veteran slugger, as they have a need at the leadoff spot.

The Jays have also considered bringing Carlos Delgado back, Anthopoulos and manager Cito Gaston revealed in the session.

8:33am: Yesterday we learned from ESPN's Jerry Crasnick that agent Scott Boras is "trying to engage" the Reds and Tigers on Johnny Damon.  Today, two Reds beat writers label the Reds an unlikely match.  MLB.com's Mark Sheldon talked to Reds GM Walt Jocketty, who admitted to discussing Damon but says the outfielder doesn't fit financially.  The Cincinnati Enquirer's John Fay calls their interest "lukewarm."

Fay says the Reds called Boras about Xavier Nady and asked about Damon too.  Via Twitter, Fay notes that Reds owner Bob Castellini might adjust the budget for the right free agent addition.  Fay says the Reds are still talking to Jonny Gomes and Orlando Cabrera, and feels something is brewing in Cincinnati.

Yesterday, we learned from Joel Sherman of the New York Post that the Rays have interest in Damon as a DH candidate.  The Yankees are out, having agreed to a deal with Randy Winn yesterday.  In another article, Sherman chronicles a last-ditch attempt by Damon to engage the Yanks in the middle of last week.  Public sniping between Boras and GM Brian Cashman followed.  Sherman has more on the Cashman-Boras drama here.

I know this won’t happen, but if the Brewers could somehow dump Corey Hart, Damon would look pretty good in their lineup.

Maybe he can return to Kansas City? I don’t know if his ego would allow that though.

Yet again another case of the Nats “being in it ’til the end”. It’s good to see that they are so deeply in the mix, but the number of times free agents are rejecting them is starting to get really frustrating.

The first step to return to relevancy is to make credible offers.

The Nats are going to have to develop a core of quality home grown talent before more free agents seriously consider signing there. They are probably halfway there, though. Strasburg will definitely help once he is up.

Nats aren’t quite ready, but will look good soon. Yankees have almost guaranteed another WS visit and most likely win. A 1-year deal for the Yankees is perfect for players like Winn. He can watch his power numbers increase for the next off-season and have fun playing for an energetic team, at least until he is traded or pushed aside for a mid-season aquisition.

I agree, I think he fits into the OF/DH role where the Sox are currently 1 man short.

No need to have Kotsay or Jones playing everyday.

My pick for a home for Damon is the Cleveland Indians. They have not spent a dime this year I beleive. They could use a veteran in LF as most of the other options (Crowe, Brantley and Brown) are relatively inexperienced. I could see Damon batting leadoff with Sizemore moving down into the 3rd or 4th spot in the lineup. If Damon is in he 1/$5 mil range then I think they might step up to the plate. If they are out of it by July then they can flip him into a prospect.

    Damon (LF)
    Cabrera (SS)
    Choo (RF)
    Sizemore (CF)
    Hafner (DH)
    LaPorta (1B)
    Peralta (3B)
    Marson/Santana (C)
    Valbuena (2B)

Way to overplay your hand Boras.

I like YanksFan’s idea for Damon in Cleveland, however I don’t think that’s going to happen at this rate. I would imagine they would have made some sort of contact by now if they were going to do so. I think they’re just going to let the youngsters play and develop at the big league level.

I think the most likely place is the Rays as their DH. Damon has a knack for the AL East, and that would still give him the chance to face all the familiar pitchers he knows.

Damon doesnt fit with the rays, it screws with their lineup. damon to the indians or tigers sounds right

How about Damon to the A’s? They are about the only team left willing to overpay FA players to come to their park. I guess about $5.250 M for one year (slightly more than Abreu last yr).

I hope Damon does not come to the Jays, if these are rebuilding years where we need to develop the young players I don’t want any veterans when Cito is around so he can take bats away from the young guys.

The issue is the Jays dont have another blue chip outfielder waiting for a shot …Snider and Wells should be locks …I would rather see Damon over Batista …if there was a Micheal Taylor type prospect Damon wouldnt make sense …but right now no one right now appears to be ready to make the jump from the farm

Wouldn’t mind Damon on the Jays he would certainly provide an excellent lead-off bat that they desperately need. 5million wouldn’t be too bad as long as I wouldn’t have to see Bautista lead off instead. A lineup of:

    damon LF
    snider RF
    hill 2b
    lind dh
    wells cf
    ruiz 1b
    encarnacion 3b
    buck C
    gonzalez SS

    and a rotation of:

    marcum
    romero
    morrow
    cecil
    rzepcynski

    isn’t too bad

news regarding the Jays coming out tonight from the Jays State of the Franchise event (for season ticket holders, get to ask questions)
Jays GM Anthopoulos mentions mlbtraderumors at the event. tweets coming from Jays writer @MLBastian
    ___
AA, on telling fans about Damon talks: “You guys will go on mlbtraderumors.com tonight and it’ll be everywhere. I’ll get hammered on it.”
    ___

Anthopoulos if your reading his, PLEASE give a regular spot to Randy Ruiz. this guy has been awesome the last 2 seasons in the minors. he was awesome with the Jays last season. he is currently being awesome in the winter league. Randy Ruiz deserves a shot to play every day!

as for Damon. im undecided. i know Damon could be used well at the leaoff spot and as the price comes down on Damon it seems like the Jays have the money to afford him. but would Damon really help the Jays in 2010? are we talking a 1 year contract? or is Damon looking for something longer? when could the Jays contend? i dont see it in 2010, but maybe 2011? Damon is however 36 years old and maybe not able to stay on the same level going forward?
couldnt the Jays use this season as a time to give other players a chance at leadoff like Joey Gathright or Jeremy Reed? Gathright was impressive in the minors last season and is still only 27 years old. was once a top prospect with Tampa Bay.

I would put in Ruiz over Bautista (moving Lind to the OF), but I would take Damon over both of them as long as it was a one year deal… two at the ABSOLUTE most.

Damon makes perfect sense for the Jays because he will give you a vet bat hitting leadoff and an asset to trade at the deadline to bring in another impact prospect that AA is building the new look Jays with

AA I hope you can make this happen and I look forward to seeing your plan unfold

Totally agree. He can help them in the first half of the season then be trade bait at the deadline. The Jays can add a few more pieces to building their farm system (3 base, outfielders, shortstop, catcher or more pitching). Its the same thing that the A’s are doing with P Ben Sheets.

NOT the Tigers, I know they don’t have a leadoff man, but…his power will really be decreased by the spacious outfield in Comerica. The Jays are a good fit – he knows the AL East pitching and could lead off.

Regardless of where the team finishes we have the coolest GM. He goes on mlbtraderumors! That has to be this website’s dream come true an actual GM mentioning the site. I think it would be a good move to sign Damon. At worst it is a mid-season trade and if he gains type A status they could get draft picks out of it.

    LF Damon
    2B Hill
    DH Lind
    CF Wells
    1B Overbay
    3B Encarnacion
    RF Snider
    C Buck
    SS Gonzalez

They could even sub Lind into left for the occasional day of fielding. Bautista would be a good defensive replacement for any outfield consisting of Damon or Lind. Also, Bautista could occasionally play against left-handed pitchers.
