Padres Sign Jerry Hairston Jr.

By Steve Adams | January 18, 2010 at 1:21pm CDT

Let the brotherly tradition continue – the Padres signed Jerry Hairston Jr. to a one-year, $2.125MM deal a few days after re-acquiring Jerry's sibling Scott.

Jerry Hairston began the 2009 campaign with the Reds, and was acquired by the Yankees at the trade deadline in exchange for minor leaguer Chase Weems. For the year, Hairston Jr. posted a line of .251/.315/.394, and earned a World Series ring while playing plus defense in small samples at left field, shortstop, and second base. Hairston Jr. also appeared at third base, center field, and right field.

The near-agreement was first reported by Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports on Sunday, with MLB.com's Corey Brock adding the salary today.

Tim Dierkes contributed to this post.

Chris Singleton was first to tweet about it, http://twitter.com/c_singleton/status/7878102678.

Not sure why he would pass up a chance to play for the Yankees again or a better team, but it must be nice to be able to play with his brother.

Also, he would get significant more playing time with the Padres in contrast to the Yankees. Not to mention playing with his younger “bigger” brother.

From your link. Disqus did the rest.

You’ve made good points about Jerry Hairston Jr. all along. The move makes sense, and hopefully opens up some room to add depth at Catcher and Starting Pitcher.

Oh, I gotcha. I agree, hopefully an “innings eater” and a nice backup catcher are next to come.

I like Weaver to some degree, but still wonder about what pitchers we are indeed interested in. I hate that its so quiet, but I guess that could be a good thing. Garland and Davis seem to be out of the price range.

I love the direction of the team, more VET presence, speed, defense this should be an interesting year and exciting regardless of the final outcome.

Its certainly another bridge year. Can’t wait to watch Blanks in LF and Evvy at SS for the entire season. Could lead to BIG things in 2011 depending on what happens with A Gon.

Too bad we can’t be aggressive on the Catcher market right now. There is value there.

        • Guest

Agree, totally cant wait… but especially to see what Cabrera and Blanks along with some of the other youngsters can do in a full year.

Its definitely make or break for Headley, Hundley and Venable. Hopefully they continue to improve.

I want to be optimistic about Headley, but he makes it hard lol

However I do think he will be a valuable contributer this season comparable to Kouz.

good point…There are still utility players out there such as Alfredo Amezaga and even though Jerry did do great for the Yankees, this can only mean good news for people who want Damon on the Yankees such as myself because they wanted Jerry And Gardner in a platoon.

So the bro combo’s have been:
          Hairston’s
          Gwynn’s
          Alomar’s

    Yankees bench probably looks like:

    -Ramiro Pena, U INF
    -Jamie Hoffman, OF
    -Fransico Cervelli, C
    -Juan Miranda, 1B

Not very good. However, the Yankees started the 2009 season without Hinskie and Hairston Jr; both were acquired in the middle of the season. If the Yankees need to add bench pieces, they’ll probably acquire them in mid-season via trade, just as they did last season

Very nice signing for the Pads, but I wonder now where does any PT come for Tony Gwynn Jr.? O. Salazar was a nice bench player, and can spell the corners in the infield or outfield, and have both Hariston’s. I wonder if maybe this means TG Jr. goes somewhere else ?

Or does he stay on as a 4th (5th?) outfielder, late defensive replacement and pinch runner?

    Will be interesting to see….

This looks like a good signing for the Padres. They will get a lot of versatility out him over the first couple months. Then since he has proven his Mark DeRosa like value, he will probably be traded to a contender near the deadline.

This seems like a good deal for Hairston Jr. and the Padres.

I wonder if they move Gwynn to a team looking for a fourth outfielder (we have two in O. Salazar and J. Hairston) and will have S. Hairston on the bench at times.

Any ideas? Maybe the Mariners who are going to a super speed lineup as a 4th OF, Arizona, I just am not sure of matches. Would think the pads would get nothing more than a flyer type prospect in return.

This Padre club is going to contend in the NL West this year. Gonzalez may even give them a hometown discount if there is a sign that they a commited to winning. With the good young players coming up in the farm system, Gonzalez may see some future in this club.

Oh yeah, I hope that Hairston Jr wins the 2nd base job and Eckstein becomes the backup infielder.

I think we go with baby steps, and just hope they are play .500 ball. It would reason to believe that one of the “sophomores” will have a down year, hopefully not. A full year of Blanks, and Latos (although I see him on a strict innings count), Richards and Venables could be exciting, I think they are a few arms away from being a legit contender for the NL West.

Hopefully Pads fans can look forward to an exciting season of hard-nosed ball, stolen bases, and good defense. Maybe the ghost of Sandy Alderson will finally be excised.

Sandy Alderson takes way too many negative swipes by Padre fans. Sandy oversaw the rebuilding of our farm system, and Sandy’s true contribution to this club will not be fully appreicated for another two years when the deep Padre farm system begins to produce. Alderson too worked under the cheap ways of John Moores, lest we forget. I think this Padre team can contend in a weakened Western Division.

I feel like I may be the only person that thought Sandy was making good choices for this franchise. I completely understand what his plan was. Simply put, dont give players like klesko and nevin rediculous contracts and build the farm system. Farm system is in much better shape after 4 years of Alderson

Beersy – I completely agree with you. Gonzalez has said many times that he’d rather win than get paid. I think if the Padres show they are willing to put a contending team together within the next few years, I think he will take a hometown discount. Maybe something like the contract Peavy signed a few years ago. And I like Eckstein, but I think Jerry Hairston starting with Eckstein coming off the bench would make the team better.

What I would like to see:

    Line Up: 1. Cabrera-SS, 2. Venable-RF, 3. Gonzalez-1B, 4. Blanks-LF, 5. S. Hairston-CF, 6. Headley-3B, 7. J. Hairston ( if signed )-2B, 8. Hundley-C

Rotation: C. Young, K. Correia, C. Richards, M. Latos, LeBlanc – Unless they sign someone else.

Bench: T. Gwynn, D. Eckstein, O. Salazar, A. Cunningham, & whatever back up C they sign

    Bullpen: H. Bell, M. Adams, L. Gregerson, S. Gallagher, E. Mujica, C. Ramos, R. Webb

I’m worried about Cabrera’s ability to get on base – his walk rate was unacceptable last year and looked better than it was because of how frequently he walked as a #8 hitter – in the #1 and #2 spot in the lineup his OBP was terrible. I also don’t think S Hairston can play 2nd anymore. As far as the rotation, they’ll almost certainly sign a veteran instead of Leblanc, and I bet Thatcher makes the bullpen instead of Webb. I also think Gallagher’s a AAA guy at best.

        Seriously?

        http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?n1=cabreev01&year=&t=b#lineu

The kid had a combined OBP over .400 in 167 PA batting 2nd, 8th and 9th with the lowest being 8th at .394

And he was in LOW A in 2008.

        Cut him some slack.

Scott Hairston doesn’t have to play 2B, the Padres signed Jerry Hairston Jr to backup at the middle infield positions.

He barely batted 2nd, 8th or 9th, was terrible batting leadoff (218/307/382) and he batted leadoff way more than any other position in the lineup. Listen, I love the kid as much as anybody, but the Padres are foolish to bat him 1st in 2010.

    • Beersy

As much as I like Cabrera, and I really think he will be a great ball player, I hope the Padres don’t burden him with the leadoff spot. It is a very difficult spot in the lineup for any player, let alone a young player just learning how to play at the big league level. As well as he played last year we all have to remember that he played in AA the year before. The team doesn’t really have a leadoff hitter, I would have to go with whoever wins the second base job between Eckstein and Hairston JR. That’s why I would have preferred Rajai Davis for Kouz or just signed Reed Johnson. Platooning either one with Gwynn Jr in center and batting them in the leadoff hole would have solved our problem. Still I like where this team is going, not just this year, but down the road as well.

Oh by the way, I think that Thatcher will and should make the team.

I would like to see one of Bedard, Mulder (doesn’t this team like reclamation projects), Lowry (ditto) or Davis in that order. You could get anything from a #2 starter (Bedard or Mulder) to a back of the rotation innings eater (Davis more so than Lowry). If we don’t get a lefty, I hope Hoyer talks to Wang’s agent. When healthy he pitched great in the AL East and we all know the NL West is a far cry from that division. Wang could really be a great pick up. I really have to commend Hoyer on this weeks moves. We have solved the “right handed bat in the outfield” dilemma, strengthened our farm system, signed a strong utility player and possible opening day 2nd baseman, all for 2 mill and change.

If the Padres number of 8 million is accurate, I think we could get a back up catcher (Redmond) for 1 or 1.25 mill, and have 5 left over for an arm. I would think you could lure Bedard, or maybe Smoltz to SD for 5 million, couldn’t you ? I like the idea of Wang or Lowry also…we are not going to win the World Series, or even the NL West, but I do like the shape of this team for what we have to spend…

The Padres now have quite a bit more outfield depth than they even needed. With salazar and jerry hairston jr providing infield depth why would the Padres want another middle infielder unless they plan to move someone? I didnt want to buy into the whole “Adrian trade precurser” thing, but now I am starting to wonder… easy to move blanks to first base now that they have 5 other outfielders, 6 if you count salazar.

No way you package Young and Gonzalez together…Young has no trade value right now, not until he proves he can stay healthy and pitch away from PETCO.

CY would get destroyed in the AL east…smaller parks, amazing hitters, a flyball pitcher like CY would just be eaten alive.

Adrian will get traded as the trade deadline nears…I hate to see it, but the haul could and should be Texeria like.

If the O’s would do that deal, I don’t think the Padres could turn it down. Three good young pitchers with high upside and a young catcher would be pretty good return. I would like this deal even more if the O’s had a really athletic prospect to change in. I guess Givens would fit the bill and replacing Arrietta with him would really please me. I’m getting a little picky, either deal would be good for the Padres especially with the O’s taking Young’s contract.
