Multiple Teams Interested In Brian Giles

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | February 2, 2010 at 6:50pm CDT

The agent for Brian Giles tells Dan Hayes of the North County Times that eight to ten teams have inquired on his client (Twitter link). Joe Bick, Giles' agent, expects the 39-year-old outfielder to agree to a deal by the end of the week.

Giles was limited to 61 games because of knee issues last year and he hit .191/.277/.271. To his credit, Giles had an .854 OPS as recently as 2008. Giles' last few UZR/150 totals suggest he's a below average defender.

Some of the outfielder's friends tell Hayes that Giles could retire if his knee doesn't feel better this spring.

I don’t think that his bad defense needs to be recognized by UZR. It’s not a secret. The guy can still hit though.

The guy can still hit? He hit .191/.277/.271 – I’m not saying he can’t make a comeback, but saying he can still hit is a bit premmature.

Why did the Indians trade him all those years ago?

At the time (1998) the Indians had young position players coming out of their ears. Kenny Lofton, Albert Belle, Manny Ramirez, Jim Thome…

I’m not sure he can still hit as much as he is an on base machine. He’s no longer and hasn’t been for awhile the power threat he used to be.

I don’t think Wendy’s and Arby’s really qualify as “teams” there, Joe.

Giles hasn’t had it for about 5 years. He was a monster in Pittsburgh though and a nice player his first couple in SD.

It’s amazing to me that these reputation guys stick around for years after their usefulness has faded and production halved – it’s almost like half of MLB is GM’ed by bad fantasy baseballers.

39 year old, below average fielder coming off knee problems and a terrible season at the plate. Why WOULDN’T ten teams be eager to sign him? Maybe the Mets can add him to their DL.

Im guessing 9 of those ten teams are from japan and the other one is a contract from henry for 4 years 72 million with a 20 million dollar player option for a 5th sounds like something he would do 😛 sorry cub fans

Hahaha that’s a good 1 considering we are 1 year removed from having the #2 offense in the NL…..anyway have fun fighting with the pirates and astros for 4th 5th,and 6th place 😉

It’s kinda surprising his brother can’t even sign a minor-league contract.

Giles stole money from the Pads last year. While he hasn’t been the power threat in San Diego that he was in Pittsburgh *cough, steriods cough* he could be useful in a platoon situation, he still has the ability to work the count and grind out at-bats.

The only thing he hits now is his ex girlfriend. I have no respect for him.

Brian Giles has hands down the best tan in all of baseball, that alone should draw interest!
