Jose Veras Designated For Assignment

By Tim Dierkes | April 14, 2010 at 2:36pm CDT

The Marlins designated reliever Jose Veras for assignment, reports Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald.  The Marlins decided they'd seen enough of Veras after four appearances.  He allowed eight runs in 4.6 innings.  Veras, 30, posted a 5.19 ERA, 7.2 K/9, and 5.0 BB/9 in 50.3 innings last year for the Yankees and Indians.  He was designated for assignment twice during the season, and non-tendered by the Tribe in December.

The Marlins have already discarded all of their scrap heap relief pickups: Veras, Mike MacDougal, Seth McClung, and Derrick Turnbow.

I just read Jose Veras as Joey Votto. That scared the crap out of me.

I wouldn’t mind the Yanks picking him back up on a minor league deal. He was pretty solid for us, excluding last year.

Huh? The Yankees’ pen is fine as it is, and the first minor league call up will be Melancon.

Does it hurt to add more depth into the system in the event of an injury?

But, but, they’re so smart, these minor league deals were amazing. Thought so.

All of those guys would have been given minor league deals at one point… if they were sure things then they would have been given major league deals. And they were good deals. Why not give mostly proven veterans a chance to come in and be a key contributor to your bullpen for next to nothing? It just didn’t work out, but it doesn’t mean they were bad.

Thank goodness Veras is gone. All the opposition needs to do is see him come into a game and they instantly take heart, knowing meatball fastballs over the heart of the plate will be served up pronto. That last game vs Cincy on 4/12 was brutal. he single handedly allowed them back into the game.. Once again..

Wait a minute! I thought Veras was going to pitch 70 quality innings!
