Blue Jays May Keep Downs; Asking Price Still High

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 30, 2010 at 6:51pm CDT

6:51pm: The Blue Jays aren't lowering the asking price for any of their relievers, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney (via Twitter). Toronto's front office has told teams around the league that they'll keep their relievers, offer arbitration and receive draft picks if they don't see offers they like, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale (via Twitter).

3:12pm: Rival teams believe the Blue Jays may end up keeping Scott Downs, according to ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark. Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos continues to drive a hard bargain, so the Blue Jays may keep the lefty and offer him arbitration after the season.

At least one team might meet Toronto’s demands. The Twins, who traded top catching prospect Wilson Ramos for Matt Capps, haven’t stopped pursuing Downs, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (on Twitter). However, the Twins are “not likely” to acquire Downs as it stands now. The Red Sox are not at the forefront of the Downs discussions, according to Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com (Twitter link).

Downs may be pitching in Toronto after the deadline passes, but the Blue Jays are likely to lower their asking price for relievers Kevin Gregg and Jason Frasor.

The Jays should ask the Cardinals for Albert Pujols in exchange for Scott Downs. But seriously, If the Jays really want Casey Kelly or Jesus Montero for Downs, they might as well just keep him and get the draft picks if they even do. The way I look at it, the Jays would ask the Twins for the equivalent of Montero or Kelly. That would be Aaron Hicks or Kyle Gibson. They are going nowhere.

It is possible that instead of the asking price going down, the Jays might be willing to add a prospect to upgrade it.

Jays would have to add a significant prospect… or better yet, add another player like Bautista or Buck. Before the Yankees made the trade for Berkman, I was thinking Bautista + Downs for Montero + decent prospect would be plausible. Montero value has taken a hit since he can’t stay at catcher but he’s still an elite prospect. But with the Yanks acquiring Berkman, I don’t think they will go after Bautista but could still offer Chamberlin + for Downs.

Keeping with the trading for Montero hypothetical, what about Downs + Zach Stewart + some low-A B- prospect for Montero? I find Stewart not really needed anymore with Syndergaard and Wojciechowski in the fold. Besides, Stewart is kind of a bland name and wouldn’t fit in with the rest.

Personally, I would do it but I don’t think Yankees wold want quantity over quality.

Agreed. Besides the need for bullpen help, all that the Yanks really need is an experience upgrade to their bench and the Jays don’t really have that, hence 2 prospects. You could try Downs + Frasor + Stewart I guess, but the chances of that flying is pretty low right now too.

Yeah thats what I was thinking. I mean there is a good chance that if they get a 1st round pick for Downs, it could be a bust. It could be the next Evan Longoria or Ryan Braun, but it could also be the next Dewon Brazelton. So why not just try to get what you can get. Angel Morales is the exact player who AA wants to have in the Jays organization. That’s just an example, but there are some great prospects out there not named Casey Kelly and Jesus Montero.

Yes, but look at any top 100 prospects list from the last decade, and you’ll find plenty of busts there as well. The payout from two high picks is probably pretty close to that of one top 100 prospect, depending on the organization and draft philosophy.

But otherwise, yes, the Twins do have other pieces that they could probably use to make a deal work.

I agree but a player like Chamberlin is plausible. He hasn’t improved at all and is just a flame thrower.

The player that interests me from Boston aside from Kelly is Kalish. He is an OF and we don’t have any OF prospects that are ready and if Bautista ends up getting moved, this is who I would target.

He’s actually one of the best GM’s in baseball, just look at the trades he has made and the talent he has brought in and who they’ve drafted. IMO I’d rate him in the top 5 GM’s in baseball and maybe higher. He has completely turned around that franchise in the little time he has been there, and they may be a playoff team in 2 to 4 years and would be one if they weren’t playing in the AL East. Asking for too much in return doesn’t make you a bad GM, it makes you a good GM if you can make it happen.

not sure we can really evaluate AA as a GM yet … he really needs to turn some (or…all) of these fluky performances into future talent, like he did with Gonzalez

little too early to say he’s top 5, I think, since he hasn’t won anything — but most of his moves have worked out so far, so he’s definitely on the right track

let’s see if he’s as good at roster construction as he is at talent accumulation!

Downs was traded to the Twins for Mike Morgan, then to the Cubs, then traded out with Rick Aguilera. It would be sort of cool to see that thread come back to the Twins.

What would the Twins send the Jays since they got rid of Ramos? They just got Gose as a “CF of the future” so I don’t see Angel Morales or Ben Revere being a good fit. Bromberg and Slama?

They likely never had any interest in Ramos anyway. They already have 3 catching prospects that are likely to be on BA’s top 100 list this offseason (Perez, d’Arnaud, Arencibia) and two more with legitimate chances to be major league catchers (Jeroloman, Jimenez). I think they’d still be interested in Morales though.

    too high on Gose.
now word that the Jays plan to KEEP Bautista/. WTF!?!?! Bautista should be a gots to go guy! he will NEVER have the value he has now. he WILL get a raise in the offseason, and he WILL be way over priced for 2011. I’d bet my left nut that he comes back down to regular type numbers next season. nothing in his career suggest he should ahve the numbers he has this season.

Keeping Bautista was always the most likely thing to happen. You Americans have to understand the the Blue Jays are not “sellers” in the true sense of the word like the Nats, Astros, O’s etc. Jays are going to be competing as early as next year and Bautista seems to fit perfectly into the puzzle. So plz stfu, you’re really annoying.
