Rangers Acquire Jorge Cantu

By Tim Dierkes | July 29, 2010 at 5:50pm CDT

After months of rumors and speculation, the Marlins finally traded Jorge Cantu. They sent him to the Rangers for AA righties Evan Reed and Omar Poveda in a deal that became official this evening. The Marlins will pay $600K of the $2.2MM remaining on Cantu's salary.

Cantu, 28, is hitting .259/.308/.408 this season with ten homers. The 28-year-old becomes a free agent after the season and has said he would like to sign with the Marlins. At this point, the club is considering multi-year deals for some of Cantu's former teammates.

Reed, 24, has a 1.76 ERA as a reliever in the upper minors this year. He has posted 7.9 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 across two levels so far in 2010.

Poveda is now on the disabled list, recovering from Tommy John surgery, but Baseball America ranked him 20th among Rangers prospects entering the season. BA explained then that Poveda "profiles as a back-of-the-rotation starter."

Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports and Joel Sherman of the New York Post contributed to the story as it broke.

Just to let ou know, you might want to be a bit excited about Reed. He could be the next Todd Coffey or something like that.

I think its a good addition to the rangers, he is pretty solid at 1st, and would be a good platoon with davis to take some pressure off of him so he does not crack like he did last year. Plus he would be batting in the lower part of the line up for them unlike the marlins where he is closer to the middle, thus less pressure on him, also he would be going to a very very hitter friendly park

not really. Evan Reed isn’t a top 100 prospect but might be a good reliever like Todd Coffey or Daniel Bard down the road. Poveda is a throw in.

Theres no way Reed turns into Daniel Bard. He was a consensus top prospect by every meaningful scout. And I don’t know how you can compare Todd Coffey and Bard, 10 K/9 for Bard and 6 K/9 for Coffey. Bard has already racked up more WAR in 2 seasons than Coffey in 6.

I wouldn’t compare Reed to Bard in any way. Reed is a nice arm, but I don’t see him as anything more than a nice middle reliever or maybe a set up guy. Poveda is a guy I’ve always liked. He had the best change up in the Rangers system before he got hurt. Once he fully recovers from TJ he should start out at AA next year and move quickly to AAA. I was looking forward to him starting this year in AAA. Had he not gotten hurt I’m confident he would have already made his big league debut.

That deal can’t be close to being done, Cantu is still in the Marlins game in the 5th inning. If they were close to a deal he would have been pulled from the game.

The Marlins are getting a pitcher recovering from Tommy John surgery and a pretty mediocre pitcher from the Rangers in exchange for Cantu and $600K?? Looks like the Rangers came out the winners on this one. If the Marlins had shopped Cantu even a week ago they might have gotten more for him. He has been playing terrible baseball lately. Oh well, I heard he really liked Miami, so maybe he’ll be back for the Marlins next season, and won’t be terrible.

I now wonder if Moreland or Davis will go back down to AAA. Davis has been brutal, but he is a great defensive 1B. Moreland adds positional versatility as a LFRF1B option.

Interested to see what happens…I say keep Moreland up and see what he can do.

Nice pickup by the Rangers. No long term commitment and only give up minor league depth. Reed may become a decent middle man eventually but we have tons of higher ceiling arms on the farm.

Loria must be suffering from sunstroke to pick up salary.. can this be true?? Did selig force the fish to fork over some of that precious community share the wealth/welfare money that the other owners fork over to him every year to help the broke Hicks out to increase the Rangers chances of a post season berth? Even though am a Fish fan.. I hope so.. Loria has been stingy for far too many years and he had better sign Uggs to a LT deal in the off season as well..

Bad move on the Rangers part… he’ll do ore harm then good.. they want to win the AL West not lose. Then again anything to make the Marlins worse but losing Cantu doesn’t hurt them but they won’t win anytime soon… but they probably will win 3-5 WS before the Cubs ever do.. hell the Royals, Pirates and Mariners will all win be before the Cubs do.. the Marlins don’t deserve to win but still

Rangers are obviously making a big push. I just hope for their fans’ sake that they aren’t giving up too much for rentals. It smells a little bit like what the Cubs did when they were for sale, except obviously the Rangers are doing it through trades instead of big-money signings (for obvious reasons).

The Rangers have acquired Molina, Lee, and Cantu and the only major piece they’ve parted with is Smoak. Beavan and Main were former first rounders as well and Ray was a big leaguer, but those players had either been passed in the prospect pecking order or had an immediate replacement.

As crazy as it sounds, the Rangers have pretty much gave up nothing and upgraded three positions. Jon Daniels has turned into an outstanding general manager.

Thats because once again the Rangers have the best farm in baseball.I still am not liking the Lee deal that gave the Mariners Smoak.I still think they gave two much up forLee.

The Rangers gave up some good players. Leuke could be a closer, Beavan could be a quality starter, and Smoak could be a superstar. Of course, the only one of them to ever play in the majors could be Smoak and he may never develop into star status. It’s a calculated risk because the Rangers know what they’re getting from Lee and what they’re giving up could be anything on a continuum from literally very little to three good big league ballplayers. Personally, I think the Rangers made a good trade.

The Rangers kept Holland, Font, Ross, Erlin, and Scheppers. They also kept Beltre, Profar, Alfaro, and Moreland. The keepers, except for Smoak, are all still there. Plus, in addition to these guys there’s Wieland, Kirkman, Mendonca, Boscan, Velazquez, yadda, yadda, yadda. I agree completely that the system is still stacked. In fact, the organization is going to have a nice problem with the 40 man roster coming up. The Rangers really need to trade some prospects this year and next year or they will get plucked in the Rule 5 draft. The club could make another two or three moves and not give up a player they even wanted to protect with a 40 man roster spot. It’s amazing how deep, especially in pitchers, this system is.

          Long winded reply, lol.

He had some health problems that have caused him vertigo. There’s only one 3b ahead of him on the UFA depth chart (Beltre) so he’s in decent shape for another deal.

Wow first off Cantu is a great guy and a great player. he will DH and play 1st for the rangers. Cantu is a natural second baseman and does a much better job on that side of the diamond, Cantu actually plays a great first base. Also, he is usually cold in july and august. you will see, he will be clutch in September and in the post season for the rangers, and he will have a better line up to hit in. i am going to miss Cantu, we were lucky to have him…and im a fan of texas this year, so i wish him the best
