Astros Discussing Berkman Deals

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 29, 2010 at 5:41pm CDT

5:41pm: The White Sox consider Berkman a backup plan since they don't expect to acquire Adam Dunn, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney (via Twitter).

4:14pm: The Astros are discussing possible trades involving Lance Berkman, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported this afternoon (via Twitter) that a high-ranking executive told him the Astros could move Berkman and start rebuilding.

Like former teammate Roy Oswalt, who was traded to Philadelphia earlier today, Berkman has a no-trade clause and can veto any deal. About $5.4MM remains on Berkman's $14.5MM salary this season. The Astros hold a $15MM option for next year, but they can buy it out for $2MM. Berkman is hitting .245/.372/.436 so far in 2010.

A lot of teams fans don’t want to lose top prospects and I don’t blame you, but If the Astros ask Kenny for him and not someone like Danks, Hudson, or Flowers, You have to think he will ship Morel to Round Rock or Corpus Christi. Think about it, they’d be getting draft picks anyway and Morel fits the bill. Plus, (I don’t think this) Many think Viciedo has a better chance to be a solid Major League 3B than Morel. You’d also be getting Lance with a chance to make the post season and go farther than that. Imagine Berkman hitting 3rd or 5th and having Rios, Pauliewood, Berkman, Gordon, 1-Dog, Quentin (not respectively) the first 7 batters in the White Sox order.

I think Viciedo is more likely to be a 1B or DH than a 3B. He is too big and slow to stick it at 3B. Morel is a great gloveman at 3B, and I would much rather lose Danks than Morel. I would even rather we trade Flowers before we trade Morel. Morel and Hudson are our top 2 IMO (of the guys closest to the majors).

I’d trade Flowers right now if someone wanted him. I don’t think he’s turned out to be what the Sox thought he would, and they are not in a position to have a young catcher on this team any time soon.

Really? Morel is the guy you’re going to make untouchable? I would do that deal in a second if the Astros sent some cash our way with Berkman.

Despite how much I like Morel, I feel I’d rather part with him than Flowers, Hudson or Viciedo. However if they like Jordan Danks I’d give the Astros him and keep Morel.

Way too much to give up for an expensive rental having a lackluster year. There are better options than Berkman out there.

He could eventually get a team 2 top draft picks. Colligan isn’t all that special but Berkman could use a change is scenery, U.S. Cellular is better for LHB than Minute Maid, and Berkman brings a possitive presence and a leader, something that the White Sox have, but could obviously use a guy like Berkman who has been playing much better over the past month. You’ll see.

The White Sox definitely won’t bank on getting those two draft picks, either. I can’t see Berkman getting a multi-year deal, so declining arb would likely just mean a paycut for him. Unless he just hates Chicago and wants to play for a new team that badly. Of course, there is a chance that he regains form and earns a multi-year deal before the season ends. As you said, he’s been swinging it well lately.

Overall he is having a bad year, but lately he has been much better and no, there aren’t many options out there that could satisfy the White Sox if Dunn stays.

I can’t see Berkman bringing in that much in terms of prospects.. He isn’t performing like the Lance Berkman of old and he’s getting paid a bunch. Maybe a B prospect and a whole lot of salary relief.

      Reply
      • Rob Ski

He really isn’t getting paid much at all. He will cost maybe 5 mil for the rest of the year and then can be let go with a team option next year for 2 mil I think. With that said, I agree that he won’t bring much prospect wise, but better than you think IMO.

$7 million is lot to pay for two months of a struggling player. Houston will have to kick in some cash if they want to get a guy like Morel, and even then I don’t see it happening.

A .245 hitter with 0 protection. He is still one of the most patient hitters in mlb – look at the OBP. I won’t argue that he hasnt’ lost something from previous years, but the potential of him going on a tear with better protection is good. I think he would be a good pickup for a contending team as long as he doesn’t require his option to be picked up.

Thats why they got Wallace he is going to be here this year. There is no way that Wallace falls under the the stay in the minors for years that is always like an Astro prospect. I have to say if they get at least a solid bat and pitcher in return the might have a solid team in 3 years. Chris Johnson is looking like a good third baseman, and watch out for Rogers son, he is absolutly destroying the ball in CC.

The Dodgers should package Manny, Mcdonald, and Elbert for Berkman and Myers. It would give the Astros some payroll relief with Manny gone after the year. Manny and El Caballo can share LF and Bourn can cover CF and RF, he’s fast. The Dodgers would get their starter and Berkman could play LF. Get Ned on the phone!!

Here you go White Sox. Everyone is selling low so get in on the action. A one time low rate we will give you Brent Morel and Scott Linebrink for Lance Berkman. The contracts could off set each other a little. If you throw in Brett Myers we will give you Daniel Hudson. This is advantageous for the White Sox because you get a switch hitting power hitter that can play good defense at first to spell Paulie and possibly a 4th or 5th starter that can pitch out of the bullpen come the post season when you don’t really need 5 starting pitchers. The Astros would be getting a potential star in Morel and a pitcher that probably won’t cut it in the AL and could use a rebuilding team like Houston to put it all together and figure it out. Really it fits both teams and I don’t think either Houston or Chicago get “fleeced”. Plus Houston just traded for 1B Brett Wallace from Toronto and he looks to be major league ready.

I’m a White Sox and Astros fan and that Morel/Linebrink for Berkman suggestion won’t fly. And if Kenny Williams gave up Hudson for Myers, I’d be shocked.

I could see the Astros getting lesser prospects from the Sox like maybe Gartrell and Harrell for Berkman if Houston pays half his salary and the buyout, and Puma doesn’t want the option exercised for waiving the NTC.

I don’t see Myers going anywhere unless the Astros are offered really good prospects. They want to keep him to take over as staff ace, and the return would have to be over-value for them to change their minds.

I would be down for berk, a nice switch hitter who hits for average and power from both sides and plays very good D at 1st and could actually play the corner spots in the OF considering thats how he came up. He would be a great #5 hitter for the sox or even a #4 …I would say give up brent morell, gartrell and a mid level pitcher or two, torres and marquez….with the stros pay something like half his salary…

I give up morell because with the way vicedio is hitting, and his D at 3rd isnt that bad. Yes he has had his fair share of errors but lets not forget he just got called up to the bigs, no one can expect a guy to play gold glove caliber D in his first stint in the bigs right away. If he learns with Omar being there and can play medicore D at 3rd he will be fine
