Rangers Seeking Second Base Help

By Tim Dierkes | July 29, 2010 at 2:32pm CDT

The Rangers have entered the market for second basemen with Ian Kinsler hitting the disabled list with a groin strain, tweets Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.

MLBTR's Ben Nicholson-Smith profiled the second base market two weeks ago.  Ty Wigginton, Ryan Theriot, Kelly Johnson, Jose Lopez, Adam Kennedy, Jeff Keppinger, Jamey Carroll, Cristian Guzman, Jeff Baker, and Andy LaRoche are the main names out there.  Morosi reminds us that the Rangers have already been connected to Guzman.

well what good does that do…? didn’t you guys just get Smoak.

Neither Smoak or Crash Davis will be anything more than bench bats in the future. Both highly overrated. Texas should have kept A-Gon before dumping him for nothing.

They are 8.5 games up, whats wrong with letting Blanco play 2b for awhile? As long as Kins is back before the post season I don’t see why they need to acquire a 2b

Don’t know if you can trust him coming back healthy. He’s been injury prone his whole career (never played more than 144 games).

How about Ryan Theriot for Cliff Lee… Anyone? Bueller?

Nah, Lee isn’t scrappy is he? Everyone knows scrap wins games. Theriot is off the scrap meter! Wait, why is my keyboard adding s’s in front of c’s?

I like the idea of Jeff Baker going to Texas. Not that he’s incredible or anything but he fits the bill.

Yep, nothing more than a journeyman but he’d work in TX and would come cheap. Descent fill in.

Wiggington was already on the Rangers’ rader for RH 1B bat. Trading for him would kill two birds with one stone.

Kelly Johnson would rake at Arlington. He can slide to DH/OH too when Kinsler comes back.

I’m available. I’d do it for the league minimum. In fact, a couple a Mc’ds milkshakes would do.

WTF? I don’t get this. They have Esteban German playing 2B at OKC and Blanco and Arias in Arlington…Arias and German are righties and Blanco switches…so why???

Fontenot isn’t on the block? Baker and Theriot aren’t really long term solutions, but neither is Fontenot. The Cubs should be looking to move any and all of them. If I had my choice of the three I’d keep Fontenot but if I got a descent offer I wouldn’t hesitate to deal him.

That said, I still think Theriot and Fontenot would be a good 2b in a platoon. You’d be looking at a 2b with a BA of maybe .270-280, 10-15 HR, 20 or so SB, .350ish OBP and maybe SLG of .400. Sounds like Brian Roberts. Wouldn’t be much of a roster space problem either since Fontenot could back up 3b, Theriot could back up SS and has also played a bit of outfield in the majors a few years back (probably not well, but he can do it). Maybe that’s a best case scenario but I think, given their production the last few years, that’s what you would likely get in a strict platoon.

Theriot (2.6MM) and Fonteno (1MM) at 3.6MM combined is not the cheapest solution I think the Cubs will go. They have internal options up the middle (Barney) they will likely try. HJ Lee is projected for 2011 sometime and might even bump Castro to 2B. If they move him now or he plays out the year, Theriot is done as a Cub soon. Don’t worry though, Hendry loves second basemen. He will have a surplus ready.

Shame Pedroia is not off of the DL quite yet, would love to just hand them Billy Hall for free with Lowrie back finally to play utility IF. Maybe Texas fans can stomach his swinging at anything within 1 foot of the plate more so than Boston fans do.

Eh. I wouldn’t want to spend a ton of money on most of those guys, I would get Johnson or Guzman, but eh that’s a pretty bad crop of second basemen.
