Red Sox Notes: Lowrie, Kelly, Lowell

By Mark Polishuk | July 22, 2010 at 10:46pm CDT

On the anniversary of Boston's trade for Adam LaRoche, here are some Red Sox tidbits…

  • Now that the Red Sox have acquired utility infielder Jack Hannahan, ESPN's Buster Olney speculates (via Twitter) that Jed Lowrie might be expendable, and a candidate to be dealt to San Diego.
  • In an appearance on WEEI's Big Show, J.P. Ricciardi doesn't think Boston will do "something crazy" at the trade deadline and deal a top prospect like Casey Kelly.  WEEI.com's Jay Asser has the full transcript of Ricciardi's comments.
  • WEEI.com's Rob Bradford tweets that Mike Lowell's minor league rehabilitation game was attended by scouts from the Blue Jays, Orioles, Royals and Tigers.  Detroit actually had two scouts present, though nothing should necessarily be read into this fact since Pawtucket was playing the Tigers' own Triple-A affiliate.  Given how many rumors the Tigers have been tied to themselves, those scouts also could've been looking at some Mud Hens players.

I like Jed, he’s a good player. What would the Sox get from San Diego?

My assumption is he would be part of a package for one of their like eighteen quality relievers.

Weird that the Blue Jays had a scout attending Lowell’s rehab game, though that could just have easily been to see other players.

I’m positive they were scouting their minor leaguers.

Someone needs to just shut JP Ricciardi up.. oh your from Boston, so now you have a supreme knowledge of the red sox and what they will and wont do?

Garbage I can’t stand him, just go away… NO BODY LIKES YOU!

I would swap Jed for someone like Adam Russell, or an OF prospect. I think a young talent for young talent swap with IF help traded for OF help for the Sox would work. SD fans, what OF can you trade for Lowrie. He is good but not great, and has the possibility to get better. Steady glove, average bat, average speed with plate patience and youngish if you want a scouting report.

Adam Russel is struggling a bit in AAA but yeah you can have him or Cedric Hunter, both are mid tier prospects, or if you are interested in a project with potential Luis Domoromo, he is at least 3 1/2 years away probably closer to 5 and has lots of potential, you could have him and a guy like Brandon Gomes

Yeah, I’m sure the TIGER SCOUTS were at their minor league affiliate’s game to scout Mike Lowell, WEEI dude.

Not that this is entirely implausible. I just roll my eyes at the assumption they’re there for Lowell.

Hannahan is not a guy that would free up Lowrie to be traded. The guy is just going to be depth in Pawtucket, nothing more.

NEWS FLASH: “Sox probably wont deal Kelly at trade deadline!” Wow, going out on a limb today??

I don’t see Lowrie bringing in much in a trade, it seems like his stock has sunk. To be honest, he seems to fit the bill of the fallen prospects that NH loves to trade for. I could see him going to the Pirates for Dotel, I’d pray they won’t trade Hanny or Meek for him.

They can also trade him for a low minors pitcher with upside, I don’t see them getting much else.

I would like to see the Sox keep Lowrie.

He has a decent glove, and can/ could play anywhere in the infield, and switch hits.

Why wouldn’t you want that guy on the bench?

    Durango for Lowrie.

I believe Lowrie can hit better than .220 or whatever Hannahan was hitting in AAA. Keep Lowrie and send Hannahan to Pawtucket.

Lowrie would be a great pick up for the Bucs. The Red Sox need relievers and the Pirates have some to offer. I don’t know if the Sox would deal Lowrie for Dotel, but it’s a great place to start the trade talk!

I hope they hang onto Lowrie. he’s a far sight better than Hall and only reason his Avg. slipped down to low .200 range was his wrist was still injured early last season when he tried to play. decent glove, SH, Plays SS,3B, some 1B and could also probably play 2B if they wanted means they should let him get more AB’s at hall’s expense and he has good gap to gap power when his wrist is fine.

I’m ususally one of the last people to give up on a guy (I stood behind Ortiz all through April), but if I were Theo, I’d take whatever I could get for Lowrie at this point. He’s looking like an IF version of Baldelli at this point except without the overall talent.

I was really high on him to start, but the rampant injuries would be enough without the mono. That scares me. I’ve had mono and it’s a condition that never entirely goes away. Any minute he could be laid up for a month.

Why is anybody asking J.P. Ricciardi his opinion? I guess its like a Steve Phillips situation. A terrible ex-GM to talk to is better than no ex-GM to talk to.

Agreed. JP can’t go more than 5 minutes without saying something ridiculously obvious or dumb.

I could see a SD/BOS trade with Lowrie going for a guy like Webb
