Draft Pick Signings

By Tim Dierkes | August 17, 2010 at 12:07am CDT

Today's draft pick signing deadline passed at 11pm central time.  This post contains notable signings outside of the first round, with the latest up top.

  • The Padres signed sixth-rounder John Barbato for $1.4MM, according to ESPN.com's Keith Law (on Twitter).
  • The Blue Jays signed fourth-rounder Sam Dyson for $600K, according to Jim Callis of Baseball America (on Twitter).
  • The Tigers signed second-rounder Drew Smyly for $1.1MM, according to Kendall Rogers of Yahoo (on Twitter).
  • The D'Backs signed 14th-rounder Ty Linton for $1.25MM, according to MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo.
  • The A's signed second-rounder Yordy Cabrera for $1.25MM, according to ESPN.com's Keith Law (via Twitter). The team has since confirmed the deal, but not its value.
  • The Pirates have signed second-rounder Stetson Allie, according to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer (on Twitter). The 19-year-old, who plays third and pitches, had committed to the University of North Carolina. He gets a $2.25MM bonus, according to Hoynes (on Twitter).
  • The D'Backs signed eighth-rounder Tyler Green for $750K, according to Aaron Fitt of Baseball America. The prep righty can hit 95 mph with his fastball.
  • The Reds signed sixth-rounder Drew Cisco for $975K, according to Jim Callis of Baseball America.
  • The Cardinals signed second-round right-hander Jordan Swagerty for $600-650K, according to Kendall Rogers of Yahoo Sports (on Twitter).
  • The Giants signed second-rounder Jarrett Parker for $700K, according to Jim Callis of Baseball America. The 21-year-old outfielder set multiple single-season records at Virginia last year.
  • The Mariners signed second-rounder Marcus Littlewood for $900K, according to ESPN.com's Keith Law (on Twitter). Here's Law's scouting report on the prep shortstop.
  • The D'Backs agreed to sign sixth-round right-hander Blake Perry for $500K, according to Aaron Fitt of Baseball America.
  • The Nationals agreed to sign 12th-round left-hander Robbie Ray for $799K, according to MLB.com's Bill Ladson.
  • The Red Sox will sign Garin Cecchini, according to Kendall Rogers of Yahoo Sports (on Twitter). The fourth-round pick was looking for about $1.35MM and Jim Callis of Baseball America reports (on Twitter) that he'll get $1.31MM.
  • Eighth-rounder Alex Lavisky agreed to terms with the Indians on a $1MM bonus, according to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer (on Twitter). The prep catcher is "a good athlete with arm strength," according to Baseball America.
  • The Red Sox signed second-rounder Brandon Workman for $800K, according to Alex Speier of WEEI.com.
  • The Red Sox agreed to sign third-rounder Sean Coyle, a 5'8" shortstop, for $1.3MM, according to Jim Callis of Baseball America. That's more than $1MM more than MLB recommends for the 110 slot.
  • The Dodgers signed 11th-rounder Joc Pederson, a prep outfielder, for $600K according to Baseball America's Jim Callis.  That quadruples MLB's recommended maximum.  BA ranked Pederson #154 in their draft preview.
  • The Rangers signed fifth-rounder Justin Grimm, a righty out of Georgia, for $825K plus incentives ($677K over slot), reports Baseball America's Aaron Fitt.  BA ranked Grimm at #109 in their draft preiew.
  • The Indians signed fourth-round pick Kyle Blair for $580K ($334K over slot), reports Baseball America's Jim Callis.  Blair is a righty drafted out of the University of San Diego; BA ranked him 84th overall in their draft preview.
  • The Royals signed second-round pick Brett Eibner and fifth-rounder Jason Adam, according to a press release.  Baseball America's Jim Callis tweets that Eibner gets $1.25MM (almost $600K over slot), while Adam gets $800K ($629K over slot).  Eibner is a center fielder and pitcher out of the University of Arkansas, and Adam is a righty drafted out of high school.  Baseball America rated Eibner the 23rd-best player in the draft, calling him the "best two-way prospect" in the class.  The Royals instead plan to use him as a center fielder.

I haven’t seen a number on Eibner, but he’s a guy who seems like he could have signed months ago. I doubt he went way over slot and probably could have gained something from signing early and getting about half a season in.

Where would myles jaye have been drafted if he declared he wasnt going to school (apparently signed with Jays).

Eibner was injured and since he was offered above slot money, there was no reason to announce it sooner

TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays got their draft deadline day started by signing 15th-round pick Zak Adams and 17th-round selection Myles Jaye on Monday afternoon.

Did anyone actually sign for slot recommendation? I get inflation, but some of the money that is being shelled out for slot seems consistently “through the roof”, or MLB recommendation needs a complete and total overhaul?

I agree. Granted — most players will sign around the recommended figure, but the ones who are above slot seem way above. The Royals won’t pay major leaguers, how are they affording unproven bonus babies?

Several Louisiana papers are announcing Lucas Leblanc , Red Sox 11th round pick has been sign. No official word on money but some sources are suggesting 500k. Also several sources are confirming the signing of Matt Price (8th round pick of the Red Sox) for an another undisclosed amount.

Glad to Sox signed Workman. His downside is that he might have to become a reliever but he will have a chance to be a starter and he only fell due to signability issues. Also, GET RANAUDO SIGNED thanks.

Sox are really committing a lot to their picks. Another HS SS with a high bonus. But he was projected to be a 1st round pick before he hurt/tore his ACL and projects more as a 3B

The Sox were considered to have one of the best drafts and they seem to be getting the big names to sign. I doubt we’ll hear anything about Ranaudo until the deadline though. But my bet is they’ll give him everything he wants by the deadline.

Same here. Some rumors a deal may be done but they aren’t going to announce it until midnight but either way I’ll be staying up late tonight. Excited for their draft this year. With Vitek, Brentz, Ranaudo, and even Workman the Sox got great talent in their early picks and later picks were very good too.

To be honest, I’m less excited about Workman as everyone else. I’m convinced his ceiling is set up man. Then again, a cheap reliever who can record K’s is never a bad thing.

For a 800k bonus that is about how much a decent middle reliever is going to cost you anyway.

I was confused when I saw all the big names the Sox drafted. I figured it was a waste since there was no way they could sign them all… guess not.

That’s assuming they can get Ranaudo signed.

There’s been rumor that they’ve had an agreed number for awhile but they’re waiting for the deadline to turn it in. But yeah, he’s the biggest name they signed and the one they really needed to get signed.

Kind of a minor let down if no Duke/Jaffe to go along with Ranaudo. Always like to see them get one HS talent with an over powering FB in each draft, but saw that latest update on Sox Prospects and the medicals on Duke’s possible arm that was posted busted that hope.

Great to hear about Allie. I wouldn’t have expected them to get a deal done so early. I’m pretty sure that the Pirates will be able to sign Taillon and if they are able to sign Heredia it would be an overall great year in terms of acquiring talent.

red sox easily have the best overall draft once the Ranaudo signing becomes official (likely 3 million $) also still possible to sign Chris hernandez . and Gran Cecchini will donate 20 K of his bonus to the Jimmy Fund.

3mil isn’t bad for Ranaudo at all if he signs for that much. He was a guy who was a potential #1 overall until Harper entered the draft.

absolutely ,while I was not impressed by last years draft(save Younginer and Renfroe) but this year is possibly the greatest overall draft in the Epstein era, at least on the surface as it can’t really be judged accurately for another 3-4 years.

Fuentes has good potential, as does Hazelbaker (his bat has exploded in the last couple of months). Volz has closer potential and there’s always hope that Schwindenhammer and Head develop into their potential power… Last years draft class was decent but yes, this years has better projections.

Fuentes is still a mystery to me, Jhaze projects as a fourth outfielder for me ,though i’ve been a huge fan throughout the season. Volz will not be a closer ,perhaps you are confusing him with Alex wilson, Brandon Jacobs who is my favorite pick from last year has great tools and head and swing the hammer both have high power ceilings. but this draft has some players with real elite potential.

Yeah. I’m especially excited over Vitek and Ranaudo. Vitek’s the type of guy whose bat can fly through the minors and Ranaudo was just a steal if he is healthy. And I think Younginer has big potential also.
