D’Backs Sign Blum To Two-Year Deal

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | November 15, 2010 at 12:01pm CDT

The Diamondbacks officially signed Geoff Blum to a two-year deal, according to the team.  The AP reports that the contract is worth $2.7MM.  D'Backs GM Kevin Towers says signing Blum is the first step to improving his team's bench.

“Geoff is a veteran that can play nearly every position on the field while also having the experience of contributing to key situations late in the game as a pinch-hitter off of the bench,” Towers said.

Blum hit .267/.321/.356 in 218 plate appearances in 2010 and missed time with elbow and neck injuries. The 37-year-old played all four infield positions and went 14 for 42 as a pinch hitter, before Houston declined his $1.65MM option for 2011.

Are they serious? A 37 year old utility guy for 2 years and two million????? What Willie Harris, Willie Bloomquist, Jerry Hairston Jr. decided to go for A-Rod money?????? Blum hit .267/.321/.356 in 218 plate appearances in 2010 and missed time with elbow and neck injuries. The 37-year-old played all four infield positions and went 14 for 42 as a pinch hitter, before Houston declined his $1.65MM option for 2011. INJURED, OLD, OVERPAID, CAN NOT HIT, He should have gotten at most 1yr 1 mil

Sure, it’s not a good deal, but is it really worth getting that worked up over? Jeez.

Why sign him now to a 2 year deal when their will be plenty of cheaper non tendered and FA players available after Dec 2nd. Very Curious desicion.

Is there any way we can rename this post “Now Serving: Kevin Towers Early-Bird Special”?

This is just a typical Towers towers signing. Get use to it D-Backs, Towers likes to resign his old players late in their careers, once they have played their best years elsewhere. He probably signed Blum because of his versatility and good character, but besides that there isn’t much left in the tank.

Two years? I don’t see the point of this. He’s a decent guy to have on a one year deal, but why two?

Not a good signing. D-backs GM has the trigger finger syndrome.

KT has already set about adding his collection of cement-footed, gray-haired, veteran re-treads to the DBack’s roster. Before long he’ll have Lou Merloni, Ryan Klesko, and Archi Cianfrocco out of retirement. He’s going to run that roster into the ground to the benefit of the other NL West teams.

Consider Drew, Reynolds, and a few others gone. He’ll have Upton in the middle of the order and a bunch of slugs ‘protecting’ him by the end of the season.

2 years? Why two? There’s not too much left in Blum, but since he’s going to be on the bench a lot there couldn’t be much harm done.
