Odds & Ends: Mets, Blue Jays, Wood, Jenks

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | November 1, 2010 at 8:41pm CDT

Congratulations to the 2010 World Champion San Francisco Giants! Here are your links as the celebration begins…

  • The Mets have not set up interviews for their managerial opening, according to Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com (on Twitter).
  • Brewers owner Mark Attanasio told Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the team is still gathering information about the four finalists for the job. Bobby Valentine appears to be the favorite and Ron Roenicke, Joey Cora and Bob Melvin are also candidates.
  • Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos told Chris Toman of The Sports Network that he isn’t opposed to trading prospects for big leaguers.
  • Angels GM Tony Reagins told Dan Woike of the Orange County Register that he'll be as patient as possible with Brandon Wood, who has struggled to hit in the majors and is now out of options.
  • Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune says it would be "stunning" to see the White Sox offer Bobby Jenks $9MM through arbitration.

Maybe the Jays should try to acquire Brandon Wood?

I dont think it’s right to trade Prospects either…oh my gosh that Renteria homer. WS MVP. WS over.

“Not so fast” said Nelson Cruz.

Not to nitpick, but didn’t Anthopoulos say he wasn’t opposed to trading prospects a few weeks ago? I seem to recall reading that on here.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to say “either”. The post was about how he wasn’t opposed. I misread it.

No worries dude, I was just saying that in general – not 100% directed to you.

You’re not nitpicking at all cuz that’s what AA is saying NOW. Spanny must’ve gotten all flustered when Rentería blasted off! :->

AA has probably been on this site reading all the posts about how easily the jays can become a contender..

Next step go out and sign a veteran big bat.. whats frank thomas doing these days?

I like Jenks, but not at his current weight or a $9MM price tag. The guy has talent, but has become too soft and expensive. Can’t see anyone paying him that much for what he’s done lately.

So what’s the referendum on all the “Sabean doesn’t do enough at deadline/off-season to improve the bats”?

WAR or OPS+ of that lineup that put up more runs than Yankees? Oh yeah… small sample sizes?

Man, I wish Wood could bounce back next year and not be a bust, but what happens if the Angels get a 3B, ie. Beltre, and Wood has a rebound season?

I was all set to call him a bust, but he’s still only 25 years old and has less than 500PA with the Angels. If he plays a full season next year and still doesn’t show much in the way of real progress, I’ll have given up on him. Having zero options hurts his value, and even not hitting at AAA in 2010 hurts it even further.

Because of these, I don’t think the Angels will sell so low on him.

problem is, and has always been that the angels are a win now team. Puting added pressure on him to put it together and for scioscia to take him out if he’s not producing.

A team like the jays or any other non playoff team ( i call them that for now) will be able to send him out there everyday and let him work through it.. Like we did with overbay, but this time it makes sense!

Wood is doing OK at the AFL. I really would like to see him succeed, in the Angels or any other team, and as you said, he’s still somewhat young and still has a shot. Good luck to the guy

He better be doing okay in the AFL, because it’s an extreme hitters league. Pitchers get murdered there.

Wood is definitely a bust right now. Sad topic of debate would be who was the bigger one…Brandon Wood or Andy Marte?

I think Wood just needs a change of scenery. Maybe he should come down St. Louis way, see if he can’t pick it up a little. What would it take to pry him away from the Angels? Maybe Allen Craig + prospect?

How about Wood straight up for a PTBNL? It is difficult to gauge Wood’s value, so deal him to a team and whatever that team gives back depends on how well Wood does.

That is really all you can hope for if you’re the Angels right now. His value couldn’t get lower than it currently is.

Yeah I think that’s all you can get for him. He is out of options so he pretty much has to be on the team or DFA.

I don’t really know what team would even want Woods anymore…

And that’s the problem the Angels have that I was talking about. His value is so low that they’d midaswell let him play at least half a season and see what he can do with regular playing time. It can’t get any lower so midaswell try to at least raise his value, or DFA him. The difference between trading him now and in July with his current value is negligible.

Also, if Texas resigns Lee – which I think they will – the Angels will be destined for 2nd place at best in the AL West in 2011.

I wouldn’t write the Angels off so quickly. Texas looks good and has a bright future, but the Angels still have one of the top rotations in baseball and are only 1 year removed from 97 wins and 2 years removed from 100 wins. I don’t think it would take many holes to be filled this offseason for them to be right back on top of the West.
