Phillies Want Quick Answer From Werth

By Mark Polishuk | November 12, 2010 at 8:48pm CDT

8:48pm: The Phillies are "making [a] big push to keep Werth," tweets Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman.

7:13pm: Ruben Amaro is hoping to know soon if Jayson Werth is willing to return to the Phillies, reports Bob Brookover of the Philadelphia Inquirer.  "I don't think it's something we're going to let go on for a while," Amaro said. "Hopefully we'll find out if he's a viable option to bring back in a short period of time. Regardless of what happens with Jayson, there are things we need to do."

ESPN's Jayson Stark heard from an unnamed Phillies source that there was "no chance" of Werth remaining a Phillie in 2011.  Amaro denied being the source himself and said that the statement wasn't true, though he didn't confirm or deny if the club had already made Werth an offer.  An early offer probably wouldn't make much difference since any high-profile Scott Boras client will thoroughly test the market before considering re-signing with his previous club.

The general consensus is that Werth will be playing elsewhere next season.  To wit, in MLBTR's own free agency predictions list, none of our five writers believe Werth will re-sign with Philadelphia.

I really like the idea of the Phillies having a Francoeur/Brown platoon or Brown playing everyday…Just let Werth sign elsewhere.

I don’t understand where the myth that Francoeur destroys lefties comes from. He’s decent against them but not really that amazing. I think it’s just that he’s unbelievably terrible against righties and it makes his performance against lefties seem fantastic in comparison.

For example… Francoeur career wOBA vs. lefties: .346. Ben Francisco career wOBA vs. lefties: .352.

No reason to sign Frenchy. Last thing I want is him hanging around striking out and popping up constantly and pissing and moaning about not having a starting job.

Heh, you should take your own advice…Frenchy’s numbers against lefties only look good because his numbers against righties are so horrific. He’s slightly above avg vs lefties at best.

Definitely the latter option in my mind. In addition to the fact that Francoeur isn’t even good, just platoon Ibanez and allow the number 1 prospect in baseball to develop properly. Being shielded from left-handed pitching isn’t the way he’s going to learn to hit it.

Not to mention his splits in the minors were actually perfectly fine. May not have looked good at the major league level, but that was in a really small sample.

Ruben Amaro is hoping to know soon if Jayson Werth is willing to return to the Phillies…

Answer from Werth: “Yes, so long as Scotty says your offer is the best one on the table”.

What does Amaro hope for him to say? It’s not like there was a public feud or beef between Werth and the Phillies.

I can translate what Amaro said. “We aren’t going to bring Werth back because we know he’s not going to be worth what his agent gets for him so we’re just setting up our reasoning for when we break off negotiations and move on.”.

are you serious, do you really want Jeff Francouer in the outfield???? As a Braves fan, I would love to see French play for the Phillies. As long as the pitch isn’t down the middle, he will swing and miss.

Losing Werth would be fine with this Giants fan. Brown/Francoeur would be an inferior substitute. Brown is no Heyward and never will be.

Not sure I can agree with this. He’s going to be in the discussion for #1 prospect next year, and while he may not ever develop the patience Heyward has, he right now might have the power (or slightly less) that Mike Stanton has with a better approach at the plate. In fact I’ll go out on a limb and say that it’s hard to see him not going into next year as the favorite to win the ROY if he gets significant playing time (and that’s coming from a Braves fan.)
I’m still convinced the Phillies will miss Werth’ right handed bat however.

I’m a Phillies fan. I can tell you first hand that Brown is not going to be Jay-Hey. Brown is still very raw. He has a quick bat, and good hands, but he has a long swing which MLB LH pitchers have already learned to exploit. His defense leaves much to be desired as well, he takes questionable routes and makes some mistakes. I think the tools are there but he needs refinement. Expecting Brown to come in and replace Werth in any capacity is foolish at best.

The Phillies should have kept Cliff Lee. That would have given them Hamels and Lee from the left side, with Halladay and Blanton from the right. It might have been a different story against the Giants, then. Of course, they would have had to hit a bit more than the Mendoza line. LOL

In game 1, for sure. But, he got no support in game 5, he made one bad pitch the entire game. It’s all about the matchups, and the Giants matched up with the Phils’ rotation. Trading Lee negated the acquisition of Halladay. And, Drabek is overrated.

Not having Lee was not the reason we lost the series. Oswalt was fine. The starting rotations were basically a push. The Giants got the timely hits and the Phils didn’t. Its that simple.

The same could be same about you Phillie fans. The Philles were basically not in the conversation of being in the playoffs until the last few years. How bout Phillies fans coming out of nowhere?

Ryan Howard’s extension is going to hurt you guys like his 3rd strike looking. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Philles don’t make the playoffs next season. The Marlins with their core pitching and young players plus the Braves and their young pitching will make the Phillies wish they were getting younger not older. Ryan Howard and the rest of the lineup are vulnerable against quality left handers and when they come to pitcher’s parks like AT&T their power is pretty much negated. And good job trading away arms, in two seasons your rotation is going to be far behind anything the rest NL will have to offer. So enjoy moment in the sun cause we won’t be seeing the Phillies in the playoffs in the next couple of seasons.

Not bitter at all! You guys winning is easier to swallow than the Yankees winning again. It’s not bitterness, it’s the arrogance of a quiet franchise.

The Phillies are a top-loaded team on offense and defense in a weak division. The Giants have pitching. The Giants got in by winning ONE game had they lost, would have played a triple threat game with the Braves and Pads. You play in a division with a better Padres team, the Rockies and Dodgers.

I’m not bitter at all when I say you’re the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of team championships. You won’t get in, the Rockies will.

Werth ain’t going back to Philly. Boras is going to do what he does best and try to squeeze all the money he can out of a team that has more funds then the Phillies and some GM is going to be stupid enough of do it. Just hope it isn’t Theo. Werth is good, but he isn’t worth the money he’s going to get.

I don’t think the actual market for Werth is as big as we’ve been led to believe by the national media. Everyone keeps saying Boston will get him, but everything I’ve read from people that follow the team closely suggest he’s a 4th or 5th option, going as far as to say the team views him as another Jason Bay.

    That leaves who else?

The Angels want Crawford and I haven’t seen a single thing suggesting they’d want Werth. Detroit may bite but I hear they have a hot shot RF prospect coming up in a year or two and they would rather have Maggs back on a 1-2 year deal. The Yankees need pitching not another OF. The Rangers I suppose could go after him if they miss out on Lee, Martinez, or Beltre, otherwise they won’t even try.

If the Phillies offer him a 5 year deal I think he would be stupid not to take it, because I get the feeling he’ll have to settle for less if he tries to wait it out. Who knows though, he may get lucky and do better, but I doubt it.

The one thing about Amaro that I cannot stand is that he tries to move extremely fast in free agency. He signs players early on in the offseason when, if he had some patience, he could have found better deals available. Ibanez and Polanco (though I think there is nothing wrong with this signing) are quick examples of how he signs someone to a multi-year deal when, if he could have waited, he could have either signed Raul or Polanco to a more team-friendly deal or found a player (like Adrian Beltre) who wasn’t getting as much interest as initially believed and ended up signing for a smaller contract.
