Rockies Inquire On Justin Upton, Gavin Floyd

By Luke Adams 2 | November 17, 2010 at 7:21pm CDT

The Rockies have contacted the Diamondbacks and White Sox to inquire on Justin Upton and Gavin Floyd, respectively, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post. Both teams are said to be listening to offers for their respective players.

We've rounded up the rest of today's Upton rumors here, with the latest from Jayson Stark indicating that Arizona seems "genuinely open" to moving their young outfielder. According to a team official that spoke to Renck, the D'Backs would be open to dealing Upton within the division, if the return was significant enough.

Meanwhile, we heard today that the White Sox would be willing to discuss trading Floyd, and Renck says the Sox have asked the Rockies about Ian Stewart. Colorado doesn't currently have a third baseman who could replace Stewart, but as Renck reported earlier, the club has interest in a handful of players who could handle the hot corner.

Despite their interest in potential trade candidates, the Rockies may still use free agency to fill their holes, as owner Dick Monfort admits: "We are really (reluctant) about giving up young players (in trades)." According to Renck, the Rockies also have interest in Scott Kazmir and "continue to monitor" the Victor Martinez situation.

Don’t bother asking about Upton, you will have to trade your entire team to acquire him.

Even that, the Rockies system has no where near enough talent to acquire Upton…Therefore I don’t think he’s going to Colorado. Gavin Floyd on the other hand, I could see ending up a Rockie…

Rosario and Rogers might get it done.

If Stewart gets traded Barmes and Nelson could batter for third. Hell even Iannetta has played third, since they never seem to give him a full chance behind the plate. But EY2 should be at second.

I’ll take this as a complement, but I figured Frank Wren gained a third left nut when he neutered Michael Hill (and partially neutered Larry Beinfest) yesterday… Thus, he wouldn’t be losing a nut afterall!

I’d gladly trade Upton in the division if they wanna overpay. He’s not a star i know as a Dback fan. Towers is a good GM and he knows this as well. It would be nice getting a very good starter to put in front of Hudson. Jarrod Parker is lookng great after TJ surgery. He will be ready in Sept possibly.

I’m thinking Matzek,Viciedo, and possibly one more in the scenario. Upton is consistently one of the best outfielders in the league( minus 2010 )and there is a large price for superstars of his caliber and potential.

vicedio and sale un touchable ….well sale is for sure thats why kenny is willing to trade floyd because they have sale…sorry bro but as for untouchables in the sox system sale is probably the only one…flower, heck take him…viciedo doubtfull that kenny moves him he is the back up plan for 1st/dh…now if a 1st base signing happens for pena or dunn and carlos slots to DH then vicedio could be dealt to AZ and floyd to COL and upton to the sox with the prospects that would come for floyd going to AZ

what has Viciedo done (besides almost set the no-walks record) that would make you think he’s ‘untouchable’?

        • Joey Doughnuts

He’s not untouchable. I would only give Chris Sale and MAYBE Jared Mitchell (surely would be if he had not been injured all last year) those titles. I really don’t want to lose Viciedo, but there are about a dozen players I would give him up for.

        • Alan J

I totally disagree that Viciedo is untouchable. Sale maybe..hes proven that he can compete at the big league level. Viciedo has shown that he has no clue what the difference between a ball and strike is. Im not saying he wont improve. He most likely will and will probably be a masher at some point but its just as likely that he may never figure out how to take a pitch

        • shysox

As long as Kenny Williams is GM, no one on the team is considered untouchable. The closest thing we had to an untouchable is Gordon Beckham and they’re considering trading him.

I actually think that’s a really good idea. Sox would probably send over Eduardo Escobar (SS) and a pitching prospect NOT named Chris Sale. The Rockies would send over 2-3 other guys. I would have to think the Dbacks would take a deal for 4-5 prospects.

      Reply

I am thinking Gregory Infante as the sox pitching arm. Dbacks want MLB ready players, and bullpen help. Infante is both. Escobar is still a year or two away from making the team, but might be good timing with Drew leaving soon.

Friedrich was listed as top 35 prospects in the league prior to 2010. I’m sure that will take a hit since he was hurt for the majority of the second half last year. The organization has already said he’s basically untouchable anyways.
