Diamondbacks Notes: Reynolds, Blanco, Nady

By Zachary Links | December 4, 2010 at 2:55pm CDT

Some D-Backs news from Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic..

  • The Diamondbacks were discussing a Mark Reynolds swap with the Blue Jays as recently as prior to Thursday night's arbitration deadline.  However, the Orioles have been the most aggressive of any suitor and Piecoro says they seem to be the most likely landing spot for the third baseman.
  • Arizona is in the market for a backup catcher and free agent Henry Blanco is at or near the top of their list.  The 39-year-old hit  just .215/.271/.300 in 144 plate appearances for the Mets last season.
  • Piecoro writes that Xavier Nady would fit the mold for the D-Backs as they look for a right-handed hitter off of the bench that can play left field and first base.  Nady suffered a down year with the Cubs in 2010 and should come cheap.  The veteran earned $3.3MM off of his one-year deal with Chicago.

I want to see Reynolds get traded to the Orioles, but I would have a real problem dealing David Hernandez or Chris Tillman…

Here’s my thinking of why a trade has not happened yet…

The Orioles, unwisely left several good young arms unprotected such as Pat Egan, Wynn Pelzer, and some nice bats, one of them is Ryan Adams. My guess is the Diamondbacks want to wait and see who gets picked up and who doesn’t, because say the Diamondbacks traded Reynolds for those 3 right now, all of them could get picked in the first round of the Rule 5 Draft and the Diamondbacks would have nothing…So once the Rule 5 Draft is over, it will be the day after the Winter Meetings end, so the players could be agreed upon just depending on who stays in the Orioles organization and who doesn’t…So when the Rule 5 Draft is over, a trade could happen and the Diamondbacks wouldn’t have to worry about the players getting claimed.

Because I think even giving up David Hernandez alone is too much.

So if you were the Orioles and they Dbacks said they wanted David Hernandez alone for Reynolds, you wouldn’t take that?

I seriously wouldn’t do it. Hernandez, spending a full season in the pen throwing 96 for the ORIOLES 80-90+ innings per season in the later innings is more valuable to me than a very expensive 3B who strikes out 220+ times and bats under .230 even with the home runs Reynolds hits.

A pitcher that can do somewhat decent in the AL East or a strikeout or home run player. I will take the pitcher. Reynolds is good, but he isn’t worth someone that isn’t even arbitration eligible yet.

I live in Baltimore and I watch just about all the O’s games and there are plenty of arms here better than Hernandez. I feel like from an outsiders view they fall in love with the fact that he throws hard. But whatever, if the Dbacks want him they can have him

I see the Orioles getting Reynolds probably for Tillman and a player to be named later, if any. What the O’s should do is save those arms and put together a package for Fielder to Milwaukee while they have the chance, instead of looking to Pena or LaRoche as their first baseman. They’ve also thrown out offers only to get no response back, or signings with other teams… why not try for Beltre? Couldn’t hurt, even if it’s a turndown.

They’d be better off with Reynolds than Pena. Reynolds at least hits nonhomers and he isn’t an under 200 hitter he was playing through injuries towards the end of the season. Pena hits into the shift every time.

The Last thing The Blue Jays need is Reynolds. They need more contact, not 200-plus K’s. If Reynolds could cut them down, maybe.

The Jays still have a hole at third. If there’s no other viable long-term option available via FA or trades, then Reynolds would fill the gap with excellent pop for a reasonably cheap price.

If there’s one thing that should have become obvious last year with Nady, it’s that he didn’t deal well with limited playing time. Looking at him as a bench bat is probably not the best of ideas.

All I was saying was that Reynolds is not that great an acquisition especially for the AL East.

all he says is the team will tell us when they are ready .. it can be 5 yrs from now 2 yrs from now

and waiting for the yanks and sox to get old .. wells that not gona happen cuz they keep on adding the stars … so please AA make atleast something happen that will keep the gap at minimum bet ween Jays and the big spenders

Dude the playoffs ended like 4 weeks ago. The Off-season just started. The Blue Jays are on the brink of competing. They have a great core of players and another wave of great young players on the way. Rogers has said they are fully committed financially. AA isn’t going to make a stupid move that will cost us the chance of having a perennial playoff team. And 100% it’s not going to be 5 years from now, that’s just a stupid thought.

If Alex Gonzalez and Jose Bautista can have career numbers at Rogers Centre, imagine what Mark Reynolds could do there… He may K 200+ times, but he could possibly break the single season HR record in Toronto lol… (kind of off-topic, but geez Mark Reynolds hit .198 last season and K’d 211 times and still had a higer OBP than Alex Gonzalez!) I agree that Reynolds was going through some injuries and it effected his numbers, in 2009 he was more like an Adam Dunn type player. High BB/K rates, but also a ton of homers.

seriously.. you baltimore fans crack me up! stop the bs saying “David Hernandez is too much”, thats ridiculous. Reynolds when healthy is a lock for 40hrs and 100+rbi’s and 10-15sb’s. His average was at .220 towards the end of the year ( i know its still pretty bad but) this is before he got hit in the head with a 95mph fastball, and had a concussion, not to mention his constant lingering wrist injury.. sure you know he will strikeout 200+ times a year but he also finished 5th in the NL in walks without even playing the full year. He put up 44hr,102rbi,25sb, .260 avg 2 years ago. Stop underrating this guy it would take Hernandez, Bell, and a mid level prospect at least to get Reynolds, or maybe a Tillman and Hernandez combo.
But if Towers is dumb enough to give you Reynolds for Hernandez straight up then you should be thrilled, he will get you a .230/40hr/100rbi/10sb type of line.
