Free agent outfielder Jayson Werth has agreed to a deal with the Washington Nationals, sources tell Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). Werth signing with the Nats would be a surprise, though the pairing does make sense. Washington now has money to spend after losing Adam Dunn in free agency and needs to replace the bopper's bat in the lineup.
It was said earlier this week that the most serious suitors for Werth were the Phillies, Tigers, and Red Sox. Boston met with Werth on Wednesday though contract terms were not discussed.
MLB.com's Todd Zolecki first reported that the two sides were nearing agreement.
Log this into the “no one seen that coming” deal!!!
lol
makes no sense for Werth, i doubt this
If they give him the most money it makes sense for him. He already has his ring.
Yeah, when Werth switched to Boras, you got the impression he just wanted the biggest payday.
Nationals keep being spurned by FA’s when they offer more money and the FA’s don’t sign. Nationals need someone to take them serious, as they have a serious chance at least in 2012.

Young team on the rise where he can make an impact. Why doesn’t this make any sense? Already won in Philly, doesn’t have to move that far, less pressure. If he signs first Crawford’s price is going to skyrocket between the Halo’s, Sox, Rangers and Yanks bidding on him.
lolwut?
“And now for something completely different!”
This is the best offseason ever.
YES! I love Werth!
I’d rather he leave the NL East. Could be a nice signing for the improving Nats though.
Well, good replacement for Dunn, but they’re still a year from contending.
He could put up similiar offensive numbers and defend really well from RF. thats like 10 wins added to their record!
Not that much of an upgrade, maybe 3 according to WAR
uh no.
There. They’re. Their. I know they sound alike but they’re three completely different words. Learn to pick the right one.
Good boy!
Sorry fixed it. Typed too fast while I was posting.
we all get very excited about werthless
Amazing how many people don’t know the difference, isn’t it? It happens all over the blogosphere. Public education has failed.
Your, you’re and yore. Two, too and to. More people are having trouble with those, too.

Quick Guide to Commas
1. Use commas to separate independent clauses when they are joined by any of these seven coordinating conjunctions: and, but, for, or, nor, so, yet.
2. Use commas after introductory a) clauses, b) phrases, or c) words that come before the main clause.
3. Use a pair of commas in the middle of a sentence to set off clauses, phrases, and words that are not essential to the meaning of the sentence. Use one comma before to indicate the beginning of the pause and one at the end to indicate the end of the pause.
4. Do not use commas to set off essential elements of the sentence, such as clauses beginning with that (relative clauses). That clauses after nouns are always essential. That clauses following a verb expressing mental action are always essential.
5. Use commas to separate three or more words, phrases, or clauses written in a series.
6. Use commas to separate two or more coordinate adjectives that describe the same noun. Be sure never to add an extra comma between the final adjective and the noun itself or to use commas with non-coordinate adjectives.
7. Use a comma near the end of a sentence to separate contrasted coordinate elements or to indicate a distinct pause or shift.
8. Use commas to set off phrases at the end of the sentence that refer back to the beginning or middle of the sentence. Such phrases are free modifiers that can be placed anywhere in the sentence without causing confusion.
9. Use commas to set off all geographical names, items in dates (except the month and day), addresses (except the street number and name), and titles in names.
10. Use a comma to shift between the main discourse and a quotation.
11. Use commas wherever necessary to prevent possible confusion or misreading.
i liked it for allthe effort
Good thing the contract is probably more than 1 year.
That wasn’t my point, but your (obviously) right. I’m just surprised they made a splash like this so soon.

Great we don’t get Agon now we won’t get Werth. Better hope we can get Belt and Crawford. Or were are F’ed.
This A’s fan has very little sympathy for Boston missing out on free agents. No offense intended to RSN, of course.
Oh man, if this was target #2 ala the Sox-Gonzo master plan, it’s not looking good in Beantown…
Now a bidding war is your last chance or either stick with Cameron.
one could say it’s not looking good, but my idea of the best case scenario was always to sign Beltre and trade for Upton.
Those probably won’t happen either, BUT there’s still hope for my own personal “best case scenario”.
If the sox were willing to give up their #1,3 and 6 prospects for one cheap season of AGON (and then signing him for close to what he’d get on the open market) they should be willing to do the same for a 23 year old kid signed for much much longer for much much less…
Ellsbury
Pedroia
Youkilis
Papi
Beltre
Drew
Upton
Salty
Scutaro/Lowrie.
What really scares me though, is the small sample size of Lowrie’s success last year brainwashing Theo into thinking he can take over at 3rd and Scutaro play SS full time. That would not be good for anybody involved.

lolwut? This came way out of right field.
haha like the joke
So Nationals can sign big names!?! Great news.
Well their owner is the richest in baseball, but still, I”m shocked by this. But good for them.
Not really smart for him they have no chance of winning I guess all they do care about is money.
no chance for winning? They have a pretty good team put together for 2012 and still with some money to spend, so long as other FA’s can take them serious.
If Werth is gone and A-Gon’s not looking likely, is Bostons backup plan Beltre+Crawford?
Cause if it is, I’m -almost- okay with that.
So the Red Sox, who were the favorites to get Gonzo and Werth………get nobody. Sweet parody!
sox still look good without either if they can bring beltre back.. remember they played without pedroia and youkilis for a good part of the season, and ellsbury for pretty much the whole season and still remained competitive. if beckett or lackey can rebound they still look good.
Hello, they are getting killed and you are still optomistic. This is typical of the New England area. We only had a foot of snow!
How are they getting killed?? He’s got a point. They won 89 games playing without their leadoff hitter, allstar/MVP/GG/team leader/2nd hitter, and their cleanup hitter/MVP candidate/allstar/GG/team leader…
they also had their all star closer have a down season, add to that Beckett and Lackey having little to no chance of being that bad collectively ever again and you’ve got yourself a team that still looks pretty good.
Providing they can make one move offensively (crawford or beltre) they will be very very competitive.
And a foot of snow isn’t all that much.. i remember having 4 feet of snow still on the ground as i looked for easter eggs as a child..
sweeter than caroline!!
That hurts Span… 🙁
Doesn’t mean that the Gonazalez trade isn’t out… just means that the window for a contract extension is gone.. still a possibilty he’ll be in Boston.. as for Werth eh
This is huge for the Nationals! The owner has the money and is willing to spend it. This team will be good in 2 yrs. This gives hope to all the small market teams. Watch out Sox, you snooze, you loose.
what? i dont know what to say to this. im stunned
At 31, seems like a bit of surprise for the Nats. I bet he is looking at a minimum of 5 years? Seems a bit steep for a team still at least 2 years from any serious chance at winning even 81 games.
Wow…This is suprising actually.. They could be pretty good actually with Werth in there..maybe a way of attracting Lee to sign with them.
What does this mean for the Red Sox? Are they really going to get shafted this badly this offseason?
Gotta be some sick money involved!
Now can we sign Magglio?
and crawford. why is everyone saying the tigers are out of it for him
The next time Dave Dombrowski gets into a bidding war for a high priced free agent will be the first. Boston and the Angels now have one good choice for an outfield bat, and that’s Crawford. He figures to get more than Werth did. I don’t see the Tigers going that high.
Tigers need to lock down Magglio ASAP if reports of this deal are true, and then move on to locking down A COUPLE different back-end starters.
and in something completely related, the pittsburgh pirates are about to sign cliff lee
So…. Bryce Harper is the Nationals RF in 2014?
werth might move to 1st to fill the void there either this season or when harper is ready(probably like 2012) or werth could move to elft when bryce comes up
If Berkman can play LF for the Cards than I would bring Harper right up to the bigs and stick him in Lf.
If Berkman can play LF for the Cards than I would bring Harper right up to the bigs and stick him in Lf.
I dont see him at first. He has played left before. And a little center. But I’ve never seen him at first
Werth can play any OF position extremely well, no way they move him to 1b now. Maybe if Werth has lost some range in 4 years they move him to 1b so harper can play OF, but no time in the near future will he play anything other than OF.
wow this came out of nowhere.
I thought pitching was Washington’s main focus, why would they go all in for Werth??
Defense…that is their main focus, you could throw pitching into that general category as well. Probably the most legitimate reason they refused to sign Dunn past 3 years.
…Must suck to be a Red Sox fan right about now…….and great to be a Yankee fan!
Why, what have they done except for overpaying Jeter?
They don’t have to play a Red Sox team that could have had Werth and Gonzo. Neither do our Jays!
I’m happy about it. Would be happier if Yankees didn’t get Lee or Crawford either. Red Sox get no one.
Automatically makes it Jays best off-season ever.
I wouldn’t mind if the Yanks got Crawford, Jays already play against him in the AL East. Lee would worry me though.
Yeah cause Rajai Davis is a difference maker in the AL East LOL
Clearly you didn’t understand what I was saying.

Not sure what’s so great about being a Yankees fan…
Redsox get to keep future HOF ace Casey kelly though…also Jose Iglesias is a future star even though he couldnt even hit off a tee.And Kalish is a future MVP
And Theo is going to be Mayor. Doesn’t that just make the Sox fans feel all fuzzy inside haha.
Future HOF ace, I’ll keep that in mind. I remember Lars Anderson as the next Albert Pujols comments though.
*sniff* *sniff* is there a homer here?
It must suck being a fan of a 212 million dollar wildcard team, haha.Yankees suck

this could be Boras leaking this to the press, so an American League club would up their offer for him. I hope it is true though, because I can’t wait to see his numbers plummet with no Ryan Howard to bat in front of him.
Ryan Zimmerman and Bryce Harper are pretty good players to hit next to for the next few seasons. Josh Willingham isn’t too shabby either, but he’s probably gone after this signing.
I highly doubt Werth will be hitting next to Harper for the next couple seasons. Did the kid even turn 18 yet?
It tough to say, he’s so highly touted that I have heard as early as 2012 he could be up. Also about the comment of not having Ryan Howard to hit by, I would make the argument that Ryan Zimmerman is a tradeoff from Ryan Howard. Higher average but a little less power. And I know Werth also hit by Utley, but Utley was hurt for much of the season and Werth still proved he could perform without him.
I highly doubt Werth will be hitting next to Harper for the next couple seasons. Did the kid even turn 18 yet?
Good thought… maybe Boras seeing if they can get a knee-jerk premium offer from the Sox in light of the apparent missing out on Agon? Could be plausible…

calling it. 6/100
No way they go that high for Werth. Maybe 5/70
Well I was wrong, they went that high (at least in years). 7!! Thats a lot
They already said 7 years I think, but the amount not said yet.
I’ll go with 5/85.
6 years would be awesome though…That would mean 3 years of Werth/Harper/Zimmerman…And Alberto Gonzalez as well.
But 7 Like he got?? Thats a 38 year old in 2017. Far too lucrative.
This easily has to be the worst day to be a sox fan
EDIT: not anymore 🙁
what about arron boone and bucky “you know what” dent. those must have been the worst.
True so let me rephrase, this easily has to be the worst offseason day to be a red sox fan
Yeah first I read about the Gonzo deal falling through…then Werth signing with the Nats?!?!?
Yes of course there is still Crawford, but now that Werth is gone, Crawford’s price is gonna go through the roof! 3 (maybe 4) team with cash to burn (Red Sox, Angels, Tigers, Yankees) all bidding on one outfield…this is going to be insane!

Amen! Just wait for the craptastic conference when we sign Beltre.
Came out of nowhere you guys are crazy. This deal has long been in the making everyone who knows anything about the nats knew this was going on, its been all over the place. My sources have been telling me this for awhile. Crawford isnt going to sign with LAA/NYY/Boston either, hes going to sign with the padres, or so my sources say. Also pitts is in on lee.
Oh and I forgot, “Generic how this effects boston and how the fans are hitting the panic button and pissing blood and yanks rejoicing comment”
“my sources”.
lol.
LOL So nats can give money away to sign players and A’s cant?
A’s at least were .500 last yr and with a great pitching staff. The bay area is a great place to live and one of the biggest media markets in the usa.
Of course it comes back to the stadium
whoa!! i wonder how much the nats are shelling out to sway Werth their way??
This really reminds me of when Detroit got Magglio. A great veteran presence to add to the lineup with good defense. This makes Josh Willingham tradeable and they could net a good return for him and his .380 OBP, or plug him in the lineup at LF with Zimmerman and Werth and have a great heart of the order, especially with Bryce Harper on the Way.
Boy oh boy are the sox screwed if Crawford signs with LA and the Agon deal doesn’t go down.
7-years is deep. Have fun with that Nationals.
Good to see that the Nats are serious about trying to win.
7 Years according to Heyman.. wow.. My guess:7/119?? 17 per? too much…to little?
He was looking for about 6/90, so which is $15 per year. So, go about 7/105-110.
ahh okay.. i would think they Nats need to blow him out of the water for him to sign there though..especially with the news that Boston’s deal has fallen through.. I would expect them to overpay for him.
7 Years according to Heyman.. wow.. My guess:7/119?? 17 per? too much…to little?
Werth is a good player but to have him as the face of your team making big time money makes no sense at all.Now i can see why the Nats are in last place year year. The Nats have a bad farm system as well so the future doesnt look good at all
7 years! oh my goodness!!!
I LOVE BASEBALL!!!!
Wow! I thought he’d endup in Boston!?! The outfield market is VERY thin next year.
Business is picking up
I wonder if Theo is now scratching his head wondering why he didn’t sign Bay last off season??? 4/66 probably doesn’t look so bad now Theo
Theo scrathing his head about Bay are you kidding me.Bay has to be the biggest flop in the 2009 free agent class
You do realize he played under 100 games right. Yes, he did struggle some
Your missing the point that now if they want the likes of Crawford, Gonzalez or Beltre, the price will be HUGE!

7 years?! Ouch the Nats won’t like that contract in about 3 years, especially once he’s not playing in that Philly bandbox
WOW. My respect for the Nationals has went up two fold. That team is serious about being a contender.
Sky is falling on Fenway.
Or the Monster just tipped over.
Theo just had a mini-stroke
Well, Red Sox Nation, you’ve lost the chance to sign Werth, now it looks like the AGon trade is not going to get done, the Rangers or Angels looks like where Crawford is going to end up, so it looks like Theo is left holding the bag. Not a good day.
They could be forced to have to give Beltre a big contract.
Good for them. Willingham to 1B?
Good for them. Willingham to 1B?
Well at least you have the Patriots! You could be living in Cleveland.
Wow, that came out of left field. We need to get Mags signed asap now
Werth signing with the Nationals is the best news for Red Sox fans. Werth won’t be worth the money. Losing out on A-Gon won’t be the end of the world for Boston either if they’re able to bring back Beltre and sign Crawford.
Already the biggest overpayment of the off-season.
So the Sox may have lost out on A-gon and definitely lost out on Werth in the same day. I was so happy yesterday too. I haven’t felt this insane drop in emotion about the Sox since the 2003 ALCS.
Caruso: I guess you could say the Red Sox are… Werthless.
