White Sox To Re-Sign A.J. Pierzynski

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 2, 2010 at 9:26pm CDT

The White Sox have agreed to sign A.J. Pierzynski, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). Rosenthal hears that the sides are moving toward a two-year, $8MM deal, but he notes that the catcher's salary is unconfirmed. Jon Heyman of SI.com confirms that Pierzynski will earn $8MM over two years (Twitter link).

Big day for my Sox. I really wonder, though, what to do with Viciedo and Flowers now? Neither has a position now. I wonder if they could each be dealt for a reliever, or maybe combined in a package for a guy like BJ Upton? Would that be plausible/ enough?

or are willing to spend…i bet they havea few more signings…kenny isnt going to let ozzie tell him how to build a team this year as you can tell by the dunn signins….AJ had a monster second half hopefully he does not get off to as bad of a start…

God, I really hate the AJ signing, I hoped it would be 1 YR/3 MIL with a club option for 2012. I hoped we would take a gamble on Russell Martin, but that won’t happen anymore. Even in a down year, he had a .347 OBP, compared to AJ’s .300 OBP. Hopefully we sign either Manny Delcarmen or Taylor Buchholz, and I would really like the Sox to go after Jack Cust, as their DH because well, despite the fact that he’s a poor man’s Adam Dunn, he hit .270 and posted a OBP near .400, and would probably not cost more than 5 MIL per year. Edwin Encarnacion might be an option for 3rd base if we decide to trade Brent Morel. So let me take a shot at it..

          LF Juan Pierre
          C A.J Piersynski
          CF Alex Rios
          1B Adam Dunn
          DH Jack Cust/Manny/Berkman/Konerko
          RF Carlos Quentin
          SS Alexei Ramirez
          3B Mark Teahen
          2B Gordon Beckham

no no no no no….morell wont get traded there is no point…he is the best option at thrid for the whitesox…also berkman wont sign with the sox ever and i wouldnt want him his ego is too hurt from 05 still and he cant really hit anymore…cust is a good option for DH as a back up back up back up back up plan…it really still looks like konerko is going to be on the sox and split time at 1st and DH with dunn…i would take a flier out on pena before cust and vicedio as well…mark teahan will no be a starter next season he will be a super sub…dyan viciedo will start at 3rd before he does…MAnny wont be back because also he cant really hit for power anymore…

edwin is not a good option at thrid he has never really put together a good full season i would rather see the cheaper option of vicedio there..manny delcarmin and taylor are good ideas for the pen..i would rather see them try to sign putz to close with santos getting one more year as a set up guy….putz-thonrton-santos-linebrink..only really need a long relif guy, andother lefty and one more guy…those type can be brought up from AAA to fill out

i hope they keep viciedo as a backup for 3rd/1st (maybe even start at 3rd and make teahen a utilty guy/4th OF). Viciedo looked good to me last year..lots of contact and power. Flowers..please trade him while he still has value. not a fan.

I think KW was trying to trade Flowers last season while he still had value. There weren’t too many teams jumping for him. He’ll probably ship him off in a Josh Fields type of deal. Everything that Flowers could offer them they already have signed until he’s in his late 20’s anyway…and it’s not like he’s going to show up as AJ’s defensive sub.

they both go back to the minors where they belong. We do not need to unload our young talent; we need to develop it. Viciedo especially is still very young. 2012 will be here before you know it.

see where your coming from on Viciedo, but by the the time AJ will be gone, Flowers will be the young age of… 27. Thats not young by any means for a guy with little success above AA.

Flowers isn’t much of a prospect. The fact that KW would give AJ two years tells you what the internal scouting is saying about him. I’m not even sure what they do with him, because it doesn’t appear he can handle the glove well enough to be a defensive backup.

Best bet would be to include him in a deal to a team that would take a chance on him either as a catcher or DH.

KW is usually great at over-glorifying the Sox prospects..but even he hasn’t been able to keep Flowers from sinking.

    • jwsox

flowers will spend another season in the minors and probably be the starter in 2012 with AJ backing him up…OR depening on ST he could be the bck up or split time wtih AJ….vicedio will either man 1st if they strike out on PK or another 1stbasemen…or split time at 1stand DH with Dunn…the whitesox could offer vicedio-mitchell(or jordan dank)-reliever prospect or two for upton but i doubt it works…

Well obviously what happens with Viciedo will depend on whether Konerko is resigned. If not then Vic will probably be at first and Dunn DH (whether he likes it or not).

Just proves that you should always assume the exact opposite of what Cowley “hears.” I wonder if the Jays were even in the mix for AJ. On Waddle and Silvey this morning, AJ claimed that nothing was going on with his contract. Most likely, nothing was going because KW was busy signing one of the bigger FAs available. As for the poster who said what to do with Flowers and Viciedo….I got an idea….keep them at AAA where they belong. Dayan is very young and needs to learn the strike zone and Flowers regressed so much that he is not even a Top 10 prospect in the organization anymore. Flowers IMO is expendable to trade for a veteran, cheap LH relief pitcher.

Phegley will not be the catcher of the future. He had a rare illness the 2nd half of this year and just had his spleen removed this past week. Regardless of his health issues he really hasn’t hit much since joining the Sox and he is not a very good defensive catcher. Michael Blanke looks like the catcher of the future unless Flowers stays and has a good season in 2011.

Also, rather have Dunn and AJ for 64 Million than V-Mart for the offered 48 Million

I’d rather have V-Mart IF he was catching (since AJ doesn’t exactly have the strongest arm either), but reports are the Tigers are going to use him as a DH. As a catcher, he’s top 5, as a 1b/dh/corner of/traditional power position, he’s slightly above average.

      Reply
      • jwsox

vmart is widely known as one of the worst catchers at blocking and throwing runners out…aj can at least block…vmart is a 1st basemen/ dh who thinks he is a catcher…aj is a catcher at the tail end of his career who should probably be moved to a different position but can still call one heck of a game and hardly allows balls to get past him..

i want to know where you getting that vmart is a top 5 catcher? offensivly yes but in terms of D WHICH IS WHAT IS NEEDED TO BE A CATHER THERE IS NO WAY HE IS A TOP 5

        • Jon Stark

I am pretty sure he meant offensively. He was comparing how Vmart rated offensively as a catcher vs. as a 1B/DH type.
